I think it has something to do with them having to swim in circles in their pools. In the wild they get to swim in straight lines, circles, and whatever way pleases them but in captivity they mostly circle their tanks which causes their fin to curve. This happens in most males and a few females.

@@CJ55981 I'd love for the orcas to be released into the ocean, but a sea pen/sanctuary would allow them to adapt to their natural setting. This is what the expert marine biologists recommend. They've been captive so long, they wouldn't survive just put back in the ocean. They need to adjust.
Good job. Just the facts and not opinion. I don't believe captive Killer Whales can be released. They learn from their Pods. Without that ability to learn I think Killer Whales would have a difficult time learning to hunt and feed themselves again.
Some captive killer whales would be good candidates for rehabilitation and release. It would be done on an individual bases. Some have received to many imprints or were bred in captivity and have never learned crucial community hunting skills. That being said, some captive born orcas have been known to hunt sea birds using fish as bait. So the ability to learn hunting is still there. Lolita at the Miami Seaquarium is a great candidate. Her teeth are in perfect shape, she still speaks the dialect of her pod and she likely would remember how to hunt given that she was taken at around 4 yrs old. Retiring performing killer whales to a sanctuary is a very real possibility. They would still receive life long care, but wouldnt have to be held in an artificial environment. They could experience the real ocean for the first time and begin behaving like wild killer whales.
I disagree, and the facts support me. Keiko and Luna. Both lost the Pod and what happened to them? I understand what you're talking about with release into an enormous pen, but it's still captivity. The one item you're not taking into account is hunting is a learned behavior. It's not innate. This is why Killer Whales around the planet hunt different prey and in different ways. I have no doubt we both love these animals. They're amazing.
@@laughtoohard9655 I have spent my whole life learning about killer whale culture and social behavior as well as captivity. I take facts into account and do research. Hunting is indeed a learned behavior, you are right. Lolita at the Miami Seaquarium is a great candidate for potential release...if she so chooses. Her mother and community of killer whales are very well known. There is already a pen set up for her and there is a rehabilitation plan in place as well. As are the killer whales that were captured in russia (now housed in a chinese marine park). These are transient killer whales that are already displaying aggression towards each other and unpredictable behavior. Using Keiko and Luna as a platform for all captive orcas is kinda foolish and it doesnt help get captive orcas out of tanks and into a sanctuary setting. Keiko was taken from an Icelandic pod of killer whales. When he was released his pod was never located. I dont think we had the information we do now to locate them and release him near enough. That and (like I stated) he was far to imprinted on humans. He should have been kept in a sanctuary. Luna was a wild orca who lost his pod and sought out human interaction. His pod was known, but due to the local tribes (who thought he was a reincarnation of their deceased cheif) wouldnt allow anyone to rescue Luna and return him to his pod. Lunas fascination with boats was what cost him his life. They are all individuals and need to be assessed and treated as such. Ones born into captivity obviously wouldnt be released into the wild. They havent had the training from their pods on how to hunt, not only that but the ones born into captivity are hybrid whales. Born to parents who would never ever meet in the wild. I dont have any doubt that captive born orcas can learn to hunt, but they would never be able to be released.
I don't know if Killer Whales can learn to hunt without being taught. You would know better than I, but think about the Killer Whales off of South America where they beach themselves to hunt baby seals. They aren't born with this behavior. The really interesting thing is that Killer Whales have very different behaviors depending upon where they grow up. In the Northwest of the US and Canada they hunt salmon and seals. In Norway it's all about Herring. South America, Chile and Argentina, it's seals.I've spent a lot of time around Killer Whales in the wild. All of it off the coast of Canada. It's remarkable when they Spy Hop next to your boat.I completely agree with you when attempting to release a captive Whale. They shouldn't be, and we've learned our lesson on this.
Amanda, I read the story about Tokitae( aka Lolita) and it was just really depressing! It’s appalling that Tokitae has been kept in that 20 foot swimming pool for 50 years! I would like to point out that they’re opening an orca-less park in Abu Dhabi. If anything, the attendance has spiked every time they step towards phasing out orcas. I’d also like to point out that the last orca to strand in the US did so in 1973. She’s also one of only two whales to strand in the US of which humans are aware. SeaWorld has refused to take stances on real problems like salmon farms because it doesn’t fit the conservative agenda. They tried to quietly lobby against placement of the Southern Residents on the Endangered Species List. The rescues become a bit more empty when they don’t try to prevent the causes of said rescues.

If we hunt then, even if it's for food, they will go extinct. Not to mention that orcas and dolphins are emotionally intelligent. Even more than us. They are completely self-aware and they have feelings, not just emotions like many other animals. Killing an orca would be almost the same as killing a human being. I highly suggest you watch The Cove. It explains the dolphin hunts in Taiji and how they brutally murder thousands of dolphins each year, and the ones who are left alive, are sent to aquariums to be Flipper dolphins.
WTF???? Sticking a highly intelligent emotional animal in a small concrete box for the sake of entertaining an ignorant public isnot conservation it's ANIMAL ABUSE!!!! TRUE conservation involves lobying to protect habitats and the animals that live in them, careful breeding with the aim of reintroducing species into reserves, scientific research to find solutions to threats, etc.Watching whales be mentally tortured in concrete boxes does NOTHING to help whales in the wild.
"Often in isolation"? There is only one orca in isolation and her name is Kiska. All other captive orcas either live with other orcas or other cetaceans.
SeaWorld keeps whales in separate in different pools on occasion sure but never for long. Even before Blackfish they have kept whales together. Usually they aren't kept alone. If a whale doesn't fit into a pod then it's moved but for the most part they get along.
+Amber Ocean How can you say that they are kept separate?! Tilikum was in isolation after killed dawn brancheau, whilst he was ill he was mostly in isolation and I've seen him communicating with Makaio and nalani so he doesn't like being alone. Lolita would probably like to see one of her own kind rather than dolphins and the same with Kshamenk
Do you know why the shows dont go to plan?? Because they dont like getting forced to do the fucking tricks you get them them to do! Pack it in! Stop keeping them away from their home and family in captivity. Its cruel. How could anyone go sit and watch them suffer? This disgusts me it really does. Turns my stomach how people find this amusing... sick. I dont approve in this at all! How can you sick humans keep these beautiful orcas in captivity from their family and their home??? You humans disgust me!
I would consider cetaceans and canines as having roughly equivalent intelligence. In no small part because they are essentially derived from the same evolutionary clade. Yet people have no issue with dogs being held in captivity, dogs being trained as performing animals.
You clearly have no understanding of cetacean intelligence if you can can compare them to a dog. Dogs are much less intelligent. They have also been selectively bred for several decades to make them adaptable to life with humans.
The reason SeaWorld doesn’t free their animals is because they aren’t allowed too. If a animal at SeaWorld is born there or remains there for over two years, they aren’t allowed to be released. Ever heard of Keiko? His release was not successful, yes he was wild for a couple years, but he didn’t know how to hunt so he went back to humans for help and they starved him. If there was a chance this would be successful, it was ruined because when he needed to break his bond with people stag swam with him. They starved Keiko, and harassed wild whales to go over to Keiko. They used the same methods as capturing. Don’t do that to other orcas, please. I’ve been anti-cap once too and have seen both sides of the story, not to mention I have seen wild orcas. Because of us humans, orcas are starving in the wild. If there was a possibility releasing a orca today could be humane, do you really think right now is the time?
The NOAA has the final word on if a rescue can be released. SeaWorld has a big part in the decision, but they dont control the final outcome. Not sure where you are getting your info. Keiko didnt starve, he died of pneumonia (which can affect any animal). Nore did anyone "harass" wild whales to see him. He was monitored by researchers. Since it was impossible to find his natal pod, he should have been kept in a sanctuary....i agree that his full release wasnt a good idea. The only killer whales that are starving are the Southern Resident Whales. Not all killer whales are in danger. Ending the use of these intelligent and self aware beings is important. Why do you say you used to be against captivity? Do you support that industry now?
KatinaLove Keiko died of pneumonia, he was capable of hunting on his own but when he didn’t hunt enough, the release team fed him themselves. He was not intentionally starved.

I go to the pet store to buy food. I see all those lifeless Betta fish in all those pint sized containers and it is so appalling. I would buy them all and send them back to their natural habitat. I know humans don't relate to fish so much but they feel too. Please don't buy them. Shut down that market.
LaumiRez I hope you're not talking about male friends of their own species, that would be a bloodbath! females would be a good choice, if going for other species, best to stick with ones that don't resemble beta fish or have big tails/fins.
@@MrMcavity Releasing a domestic betta into the wild is like releasing a pug into the wild. They are vastly different from their wild ancestors, and would probably die a miserable death without the safety humans provide.
@LaumiRez Thank you for mention of a decent tank size, with live growth and tank mates. Although they must make do with dry spells I am sure they appreciate the deeper, wider water availability.
@@animalobsessed1 Yes, hybridized and wild Betta are different, however, It would be worth the trial to see if Betta, through process, could acclimate to it's natural environment. It is horrible to see stacks and stacks of these poor lifeless creatures, sitting in cups of water, one upon the other until they are taken home for a table decoration, or until they die.
What will we do w China?
Kevin Lew Nothing because all the anti caps care about is releasing 22 safe and healthy killer whales who would never survive in the wild, they don't care about wild whales. 6 southern resident orcas died last year and I don't here a peep from the antis. There's something wrong with their minds, they are diseased...
KaylaxKyuquot Studios I find it odd that you basically blame anti-caps for the fact that salmon farms are starving wild whales to death.
Humanity has fucked up in many ways

very educational I like the video
No beautiful animal whales or dolphins any animal should not be put on display and made to do tricks I think it's horrible if they actually do create really large sea pens and stop this nonsense that would be wonderful cuz some of them might be injured or used to captivity but this shouldn't be allowed it's abuse so people stop spending your money and giving it to something that is so unethical I don't blame the animals 1 bit I blame the humans

SeaWorld is not bad
Yeah, imprisoning animals in bathtubs that are less than 1% of their natural habitat is totally ok right?
@@morganistrue it’s not imprisonment, the animals at SeaWorld have good care I even know someone who works at SeaWorld and also SeaWorld has rescue teams!
@@corkylove4ever523 Even with their "world-class veterinary care" they still get scars, worn teeth and sunburns 😳🤔
And guess what? Doesn't matter how much "love" the trainers give to them. It is still imprisonment as they can't leave, can't escape, can't hide, can't go anywhere at all. They are condemned to stay in a tiny bathtub to the rest of their lives. 😃
Fun fact: A dog with excellent veterinary care could spend its whole life, from birth to death, inside a tiny kennel, living the average lifespan a normal dog would. But why don't we do that then? 🤔 Maybe because... It's inhumane?! 🤯
If SeaWorld is so good as it claims to be, let's replace all SeaWorld orcas with humans! Would it be educational or human trafficking? 🤭✌️

Animal cruelty is important.
Why does their fin go down? Is it from sadness?
I think it has something to do with them having to swim in circles in their pools. In the wild they get to swim in straight lines, circles, and whatever way pleases them but in captivity they mostly circle their tanks which causes their fin to curve. This happens in most males and a few females.

sea world is not for sea pens
I love lolita I hope she goes home
As sad as that is, she'll die if she's released. The ocean waters in the region of her home are polluted, + out of all her pack, there's only 1 orca left. Yes, that's her mom, but will they recognize each other? No. Lolita will be rejected by the orca who has no idea who she is. Lolita has to stay in her tank.
@@CJ55981 not true. SeaWorld could take its billions of dollars and construct sea pens/sanctuaries where orcas could be released
@@valmacclinchy still captivity and human care though.
@@valmacclinchy Keiko was adjusted but didn't survive without humans. What are the chances Lolita won't suffer the same fate?
The POS owner from the Miami Sea Aquarium doesn’t want to let go of his cash whale! I also read a statement that you made a while back to another commenter and you said that MSA tried to get a permit to grab Keiko and put him in along side Tokitae after he was released, but that request was denied, thank God! I saw the link you left on that story and I’m going to check it out.
You forgot Keiko !!! 😡😡
Okay.. If orcas shouldn't be captive, then should other animals be? Should zoos be all shut down?
No zoos should not be shut down then they can’t rescue hurt or sick animals
I agree free the orca or killer whale

Don't go to sea world
It's called conservation people and I know bigger bathtubs are needed in the future.Conservation is needed to helps species have healthier lives for taking care of injured animals and donated money towards people with guns that go after poachers.Nothing wrong with Sea World because they have the largest programs of saving sea life on this planet.Sacrifice little to save many.
It's not conservation. It's murder. Lowkey murder.
@@morganistrue Well, let the Chinese murder the wild orca when they run out of other resources, and then, when orca is on the menu! Why do you people never worry about what happens outside of the aquariums, also you people are just worried about what you see immediately that affects you with no logic or an answer for killer whales' future! People have to know about these creatures and conservation is the only way to do it and sea zoos are needed!!
@@green15838 Eating cetacean meat can e highly dangerous if you are 1. Disabled 2. Sick 3. Pregnant 4. Old 5. A child.
It's not healthy. And ALL cetaceans are endangered species.
And then tech them Psychological training
all zoo animals have had the some story pandas to
Bondage God People Everything Considered Captive...ha...?
"Often in isolation"? There is only one orca in isolation and her name is Kiska. All other captive orcas either live with other orcas or other cetaceans.
And lolita and kshmenk from Mundon marino
+Summer Wilson Lolita lives with Pacific White-Sided dolphins and Kshamenk lived with Bottlenose dolphins.
Actually Tilikum is kept with Malia, Trua, Makaio, and Katina. And he also used to be with Takara, Gudrun, and Taima (before they died/were moved).
sad
Fun fact: if a orca wasn't captured, it will live a longer life. IF it was captured it will live a shorter life

Amanda AffiniteAmaya clearly does support this industry.
what done done at least sea world is trying. but some measure are wroung stopping breeding yes stop making theme pregnant but don't stop it the naturely way as that is unhealthy making them sexually frustrated and agresive just like human and stopping show stops health exsersise

They inbreed their orcas which never happen in the wild and take the calves to other sea worlds when they are still babies.
It's completely wrong and horrible and should and will be stopped.
Just because you think animal abuse is ok doesn't mean others are wrong, you need to do your research and learn about these animals before commenting your opinion which btw is wrong.
