If you know anything about orca's or Tilikum's life or even the incident itself, then you would know its the fault of Sea World for how cruelly they treated him, and not catching the signs that he wasn't stable and doing something about it sooner. The entire incident could have been prevented, yet it wasn't because of Sea World's negligence of both their trainers and animals, and how horribly the animals were oftentimes treated.
Orca's are very intelligent, and there exists speculations they feel at a greater degree than we do, and care more for each other than we ever could. They live in complex social structures, to the point their entire lives, mental stability, and health are all based around being loved and being with their families and loving them. Their entire lives are formed around this idea, as they are meant to stay with their pods for life until death, their pods are their life.
Tilikum was stolen from his mother when he was just a baby, and then forced to live in small, cramped, confined spaces alone without any member from his previous pod for about two years, before he was eventually sold to Sea World. They then tried to force him to breed with the other girl orca's who were received from the same methods. Tilikum was outcast by the other girls and oftentimes abused or beaten by them; because Sea World knew nothing about the behavior of orca's or how to introduce ones from two different pods properly to each other. Often times because of this Tilikum would become ill from infections and his wounds and because of his poor mental health. This was one of his only forms of social contact.
When he wasn't being beaten he was isolated in his small pen where he would suffer loneliness, boredom, and a lack of stimulus. The main form of attention he got was being forced to train with huge amounts of stress being put on him to do well, and then preform for crowds of people and their amusement, and then he would be put back in those same conditions. All for a few extra fish.
Gradually over time the isolation and beating got to him, and he became gradually more hostile; yet Sea World ignored it, deemed him safe, and did nothing to try and help him or rehabilitate him. In reality, they are at fault for both Tilikum's eventual outburst (which wasn't really that sudden, he had lashed out at people before) and Dawn Brancheau's death. They tortured a creature by taking away the main aspect of their life, being loved; and kept making excuses when he acted out after they stole him from his family, isolated him, beat him, and let him constantly suffer from boredom, sickness, and stress.
Not wanting to face charges or public backlash for the incident, the staff of Sea World turned around and said they would lie. That is just what they did. They lied, to Brancheau's family, the press, and the public. They waited 27 after the attack began to call paramedics, tried removing witnesses that would contradict the "ponytail triggered the attack" story, taught their trainers that they had to keep working and preforming with the orca's even if they acted out or aggressively, and did not claim immediate responsibility for her death and instead tried to blame Dawn Brancheau herself for her own death.
It doesn't help orca's are supposed to live about 50-60 years, and yet recently (after once again being put in isolation, only now not even receiving what little social bonding or physical affection he received, and instead a hose to clean and massage him) Tilikum died after suffering a year from a respiratory disease, at the age of 35; a little over half of his life expectancy. According to Sea World they, "gave him the best treatment possible."
In the end, it's Sea World's fault this happened. They should have not isolated, beaten, and worn down Tilikum and just used him as a breeding device. They should not have treated their orca's so poorly. They should not have told their trainers he was safe to be around. They should not have ignored previous signs he was becoming aggressive. They should not have forced their trainers to interact with these creatures even if they were becoming hostile. They should not have ignored basic safety procedures and improperly train their performers. They should not have tried to cover up the incident, blame the victim, and wait so long to take action. Or better yet, _they should not have robbed social creatures from their families and forced them to preform for our forty minutes of amusement._
Word of advice Venessa W, never just take the simpler answer. What you are saying sounds like what the mainstream media was told about the incident by Sea World's higher ups; which was the story mainly distributed during the event. This was back when it wasn't publicly known how they treated their trainers and orca's, before an investigation was done and the documentary came out revealing what was really going on. There is always more to a story. There are always things you are not being told.

Even though he was trained, he still has killer instincts because he still is a killer whale. It’s how they were made and how they will be.
Ofc I don’t know the purpose of why he ate the trainer and ate her. Maybe she did something wrong. That wasn’t right. Maybe it was self defense IDK.
BUT I know for a fact. All of the whales, especially Tilikum. Live a terrible, horrible life. They get tased to train them. They get tased If they did something wrong. They were mistreated.
And I know. KNOW! That if you were being tased, you would want to kill the person doing it to you.

@@aracelymatutetrejo This is a great point as well. Orca's are still wild animals, and we can't expect to control them. It's foolish to think that. And to mistreat them and then expect them to obey us is even worse.
Though...I do care people were hurt from all of this. The trainers were not entirely to blame, it was mostly Sea World staff who was to blame.
Also sorry for my rant Vanessa; I was having a pretty crummy day and honestly I shouldn't have acted like that.

Tilikum's reaction was one that could be expected from anyone in his position and what he went trough, now he's an outcast, come one, are you going to compare an animal's natural reaction to what a human being does when he kills some-one? In my believe, you can not do that. Why, people have rights, animals don't, humans are learned what is right or wrong to do well in this world, this animal had only his natural instinct and the fact that he was taking from his mother, it's not fair to think that way.
A human can count on a psychologist, why does this animal get, nothing at all, only neglect.

You can call me as fake as you want me to be. To answer your question, as a child I saw nothing in this world, Europe is small, but anyway, I never went anywhere. When I grew up and lived alone, I started travelling, Ibiza ('92) was one of my first stops. Years later in March 1998, I visited this zoo witch was highly recommended, so I went.(Tenerife) I entered it and was notified of some show wich was gonna be displayed. I sat in this tribune (right word? not sure...) And there it was, some show was put on with sealions and later on with whale, orkas. I sat there and watched, I got trough the sealion-performance but once the whales started, I no longer had controle over my emotions, tears came to my eyes and didn't even understand why, I kept on sitting there, the whales kept on doing what the men or women said or directed and I started crying even more, I still didn't understand what was happening, I didn't understand logicly what my emotions were doing. I left crying and kept thinking of what occured to me. At that point in my life something or my own emotions told me, this is wrong. It took many years more to understand how animals are abused and it took some more to become a vegetarian. I am not ashamed to admit it took this long, these were pre-internet-times, if you wanted to be informed, you had to get to a library, there was no knowledge for common people who didn't study, am I ashamed to tell this, hell no, once knowledge was available, I absorbed it.
You think I am fake, ok, these words stay here and can be an inspiration for others. If not, ok, if yes, I am glad.
Why would I want to be a fake, I wan't nothing from anybody and yes, I have an opinion on animals and their well being, shoot me !!

Forgot yo mention.was on FB once, was more interested in abusing of animals shown by various organisations around the world, then I was in friends' messages. I was a member of them all, I watched abusive things every night when I came home from work. It was hard, because I wanted to be aware of all of it, so I left FB, I can't control it, every message, every save, every adopty, it appears every day and it controls my mind.
Fb is gone now, but I read newsletter and am still aware.....

Tilikum did have company, he was mostly with his grandson Trua and other orcas
Lolita is 52 years old, hasn't seen another orca since 1980, in a tank that's barely half the size of any of SW's tanks. She's only had the company of a few dolphins and that's it

This reminded me of when I was about 10 y.o. and my parents took me to Sea World in San Diego back in the 70s and park's visitors got to stand close to one of the holding tanks of which there was an Orca all alone and not moving while it faced the onlookers. I remember when our eyes locked, I felt an overwhelming sense of sadness and felt the Orca letting me know it was extremely sad. The feeling was so overwhelming that I started to cry uncontrollably. And when I did, the Orca started to bob in the water several times creating waves. The onlookers thought it was neat that the Orca was doing this, but I felt otherwise. I felt the Orca did that to let me know it knew I picked up on its sadness. It felt like its bobbing was the Orca saying "Someone FINALLY sense my sadness!". Till this day, that incident still stays with me. Orcas should be left in the wild.

@@brendanwatanabe2589 I actually don't support peta at all, but thanks for assuming I do! I would advocate for Tilikum to be rehabilitated in a sea pen, trained to catch live fish for several years, and then be released. You don't honestly think that I would be okay with plopping them in the ocean directly from the tanks and leaving them without a clue on how to survive? I understand whales born there can't be released, but they can live their lives out in a sea pen. Tilikum did used to live in the wild though. That's why he had a chance. Keiko's release may not have worked, but more recently there were dolphins that were rehabilitated and released from a South Korean marine park--one was spotted with a calf, and another was spotted with its pod of origin. Just because this didn't work for one of the animals doesn't mean it won't work for all of them. Ok, time to educate. Humans are the only species that kills for territory, personal gain or just for fun, and not even counting inter-species killing. Humans are the only species that causes wide spread environmental issues, for personal gain. Humans are the only species that captures other species and put them on display, also for personal gain. Animals, they kill for food, period. Animals don't murder, know not of personal gain, dont cause environmental problems, and if you put the amount of animals that killed humans against the number of animals that humans have killed, you cant come to any other conclusion, that we are the cancer of the world. So, lets NOT judge animals on equal grounds ok. Humans will lose that judgement.

Chris Savage "Ok, time to educate. Humans are the only species that kill for territory, personal gain, or just for fun". Not a single part of that statement is correct, it's hilariously wrong in every way. Just about every predator, wolves, bears, lions, tigers, and even Meerkats will kill other animals for territory. A tiger may attempt to kill another tiger to take over it's territory and gaining more resources for itself (Sound familiar?) Every single animal on the planet kills for personal gain, feeding yourself is a type of personal gain, and every single animal kills other animals except for the 100% herbivorous creatures. And many animals kill for fun aswell, house cats for example will kills mice and rats and then play with them for no real reason aside from entertainment. Please do not try to be so pretentious when you're about to make such an idiotic statement. You definitely did not educate me, you spewed BS lies you probably heard on the internet from another human-hater.

He was able to experience the the things regular Orca were able to, and I think he would have been fine had we been able to find his pod. If we can do all this for Keiko why can't we do this for Tilly as well?

They can't just "learn how to hunt after being put back into the wild" it's something that is learned when they are young so it becomes imbedded into their brains, that this is the thing that they need to do to survive. However, with these captive whales, they learned from a young age that they can rely on food from humans without learning how to hunt, therefore, causing them to become tamed and do not require the ability to learn how to hunt.

    • @mythical1059

I agree with but seems legit I do not first off they are not tamed they could still turn around and kill someone if they wanted. Second just like any animal even cats and some dogs if they were set free they would go back to there instincts and learn how to hunt. Even if they didn't they could scavange for scraps of food left behind or even kill sick or wounded animals. But I do think the best humans could do for these animals is at least put them in a sea pen and taken care of there.. Well that's just my opinion though so feel free to hate this XD or agree with me

They did try it, with the Orca from Free Willy. They first moved the whale from Mexico to Seattle and the whales health greatly improved in a larger tank with fresh ocean water. However people kept pressuring them to release the whale. They "taught" it to hunt and moved it to a sea pen, then eventually released it from ice land, its original place of origin. The whale swam like 850 miles to find humans to interact with. It never found a pod, nor did it learn to successfully hunt. It did attract so much human attention that new laws were created to keep people and their children away, but it didn't work. Caretakers feed it daily (after testing stomach contents multiple times and finding nothing, and the tracker showed it never went more than 4 miles away. They even took it on "walks" using a boat to allow it to see other orca pods, but it stayed with humans and never tried to integrate in a pod. It died a year later after beaching itself. It should serve as a lesson that these whales cannot be released, but instead require our care since we stole them from their family and taught them to depend on us.

Erica Elf, if you turn the sound off on this video and play perhaps inspirational
music like Celtic Woman, your whole perspective can be changed into
believing the whale is quite happy....like a human mother enjoying the
solitude of being away from a hectic schedule of crying babies.
Don't believe me? Watch some WWII footage of Nazi soldiers marching while also streaming music
to the tune of 'You Raise Me Up' and you'll believe their cause and mood is
      happy. Try it.
The power of background music and choreographed action is persuasive and
can be engineer to support practically ANY position.
Guess which segment of society gets suckered into it easily? LIBERAL
      DEMOCRATIC WOMEN!

ILuvJuly4th F**k the background music. whether anyone is twisting reality or not, the truth is what they're doing in keeping these whales in captivity is wrong!! period. Captivity of any animal for the purpose of human entertainment is wrong from any angle. no matter how big the pool, it is NOT their natural setting. they are not free. Compare the size of the largest pool to the range of the earth's oceans these whales swim in!it's one thing to be born in captivity but another when you've been yanked from your family and loved ones, like what happened to Tilikum who was born FREE. They need to let him go. He deserves a chance at life.

The reason people have strong opinions on the welfare of these animals is because these parks did a good job making the public care about whales. This is how we got the Marine Mammal Protection Act in America and dolphin safe tuna across the world. It was parks like this that led the charge against whaling and have helped restore populations in the wild. Activists, while well meaning, never produce the peer reviewed science necessary to justify the end of captive breeding programs. Especially as care has improved over the decades. Do not be so quick to reach judgement on marine parks as a whole. The loss of these facilities could cost a great deal in terms of the welfare of these captive-born animals, to say nothing of lost research and conservation initiatives.

With the money they made out of exploiting Tilikum, they could build him a big sea enclosure and find him a suitable companion, preferably a male since orcas are a matriarchal society, for the remaining of his life... These creatures are highly intelligent. Those trainers can teach them stupid unnatural tricks but they can't teach them how to hunt?... Tilikum was stolen from his family when he was around 6. He had already observed his mother and the other adults hunting.

+Shane Smith Actually, it's a terrible idea to release Tilly back into the wild or even retire him to a sea pen. The reason for this is because of worn down teeth, he would officially be the loneliest whale if retired to a sea pen. The reason I state this is because after the death of Dawn. Well it's like your dog. If someone died in the house where the dog lived it knows what happen. So it does get depressed for awhile. Soon Tilikum rejoined the shows, interacts with the crowd, and loves hanging out with his trainers and his grandson Trua!

Ik a lot of people want " freeing whales in the wild" but have you ever heard about keiko, the first whale to be release after 19 years of captivity. They spent 20 million to rehabilitate him to be prepared for the open ocean. But the project failed because he kept coming back looking for humans and he eventually died 5 years after his release because of pneumonia because he chose to stay in a area with bad water because hes dependent on us . It is not easy to return a captive whale back to the wild it costs millions. One thing that should be done is to stop capturing wild whales to be placed in aquariums. I know that in China they r still doing it. Why cant people just make it illegal.

Many of you need to think before saying "release him back into the ocean". You might as well kill him now if you are going to do that. He has lived a majority of his life being treated and looked after by humans. If you release him into the ocean, he wouldn't survive. He is too used to having people hand feed him, look after and monitor his health etc etc. Many captive animals would die if you release them into the wild. There is a HUGE difference between the wild and captivity. However, I do agree that he should live out his soon to be remaining days in the wild, where he was born free. He was born free and deserves to die free. He shouldn't die alone in a tank. Although, this would never happen.

    • @sugarkitty2008
      @sugarkitty2008 8 лет назад +2

captive bred/domestic animals can't live in the wild. he was wild caught. he has the instinct and the intelligence to learn to hunt. the very least they can do is put him in a sea pen with the option of hand feeding and human interaction if he wants it.

soccer star Blaming Dawn for what occurred is pretty unfair, though of course it seems easy to do so now, in retrospect. Hindsight is 20/20.
I don't even really blame the trainers for the current situation. They do the job they're hired for, one which they are usually quite passionate about, and often come to harbor a lot of affection for the animals. They are hired young, and fed all of that marketing bullcrap - this is fun for the animals, they're helping them and taking care of them, etc. But the bottom line is that the policies behind these businesses are just awful, and even if a trainer cares about their animal, there is little they can change to make these situations bearable. The trainer can't build a bigger pen or increase their own funding. They can't even keep the animals with their own family.
With Tilly, you have to keep in mind that he is a huge, stressed out animal. This is a constant factor. She went through the motions, and he did something unexpected. The minute he decided to do that, there was absolutely nothing she could have done to avoid her death. Because he's massive. I've had my dog snap at me because I accidentally snuck up on him once - he was totally justified in doing so from his point of view, and it was a totally natural reaction, even coming from a completely non aggressive, mushy softball of a dog, whom I most definitely would say I "love enough." Point being that sometimes animals (and people) do things unexpectedly, and while it's incredibly easy to say "Well, maybe I should have done this differently" after the fact, well, it's rather hard to do that when you were killed in the process. And unlike my dog, Tilly has had a troublesome history with agitation and aggression, as do many other captive whales thanks to their miserable environment.
Like the woman in the video, I understand the system they had in place here, and it's perfectly logical, if saddening for Tilly, that they keep their distance. Legal limitations aside (because there are federal laws that limit certain things these days, like entering the tank), trusting an animal that has been involved in three deaths at this point wouldn't be responsible in regards to their trainers' wellbeing. Tilly is psychologically broken, and they need to step back and understand that, just give him a rest already. A sea pen for him would be amazing. Unfortunately, that would probably limit their ability to use him as breeding stock, so there in his easily accessible, tiny, miserable little fishbowl he sits.
And now he's back to doing shows again. I can't decide if this is better or worse. Sorry for the essay. ;D Have a lot of pity for Dawn, she seemed like a nice woman from everything I've read/heard.

It's not possible to just free Tilikum back into the ocean independently. Unfortunately poor Tily isn't mentally stable enough for that. He's physiologically damaged. It would be dangerous for him, other whales & any people he would encounter out in the ocean. But there is the most humane option & that is to put him in a sea pen, where he would still require human care but he would get a taste of the freedom that was stolen from him. It's so heartbreaking to see him just lay listlessly in that tank, likes he's giving up. It makes me so sad & angry what his life has come to as a result of humans.

I think that's a logical statement but he was taken from the Sea when he was very young and probably wouldn't do well on his own with wild orcas and having to catch his own food. But its so depressing seeing him here in this state.

Mary Flavin Agreed, they are not making sufficient efforts to do this.
The first step surely is to stop stealing them and stop breeding them in captivity.

Mireya Seymour wouldn't it help if they sent him back to his pod wher he can perhaps learn to hunt?

Tillikum wouldn't have been so outrageous if he would have been in the ocean,&would have been staying healthy & eating lots of food as well instead of being prison @ seaworld.

I used to go and watch these shows and look and be happy cause I had no idea that these poor animals were kept in these small tanks and forced to do shows everyday and can I say I have not bought a ticket to any type of theme park where these show happens since 5th grade and can I say I’m proud

We should all remember what happened to the first Orca who got released - Keiko. He died soon after he got released. Sure they might have the skills to hunt but that may not be enugh...

i know it doesnt do any good now but they shouldnt have captured them in the first place, u gotta watch BLACK FISH it'll change your whole perspective.

Keiko died of pneumonia, had nothing to do with his ability to survive in open seas.

    • @Loweredexpectationss
      @Loweredexpectationss 10 лет назад +2

But you forget, Keiko died FREE. He had 5 years of freedom before he croaked. I cannot speak for orcas but I, myself, would rather die free in the wide open ocean of my birth, feeling it's rhythm, hearing it's sounds and tasting its richness than die alone, locked in a deafeningly silent concrete hell hole, whored out, unwillingly, for human entertainment. Truly.

He died while under human care, being fed and monitored in a fjord in Northern Europe. He survived the ocean fine but succumbed to an infection several months later. And again, no one is suggesting leaving Tilikum to fend for himself, he would be put in an open ocean pen where he would be able to interact with other sea life and hunt, but still be cared for and fed by humans if necessary. It's the least they can do after providing a lifetime of service, not to mention inhumane treatment.

He died of pneumonia. The statement about starvation was false. At least he got to swim in the ocean for the last time.

    poor thing :(
he's not some inherently evil, dangerous creature...the life he has been forced into has destroyed him. these idiots at seaworld need to do the right thing; they need to rehabilitate him and set him free before it's too late. i can't bear to see this beautiful animal suffer like this :(
