  • It is known that a bonded pair of parrots will start becoming adventurous, start feeling they don’t need their humans as much. The signs with Mikey and Mia are getting stronger.
    This is something that only one of us has been affected by, so we strongly feel we can fix this. But happening so much over the last few weeks, it’s no longer a one off.

    I think it could be the hormones triggering their behavior. Dw, my tiel too had stuff like that but now we got it in control. You could change treat variety and spend more time with them to keep you guys connected. Wish you and the birbs the best.

    We free fly our sun conure and she’s been exceptionally bad at recall over the last 3 weeks, too. She does a bit of flying and goes off to a tree and starts munching on all the new shoots before going off to the next tree, and the next. Normally we can recall her down from trees quite well so have never minded her landing on trees. But she has been ignoring us more and more during these weeks, to the point that it took a butterfly freaking her out and getting her off a tree (and I’m supposed to be her favourite human)… I think spring has something to do with it, maybe the excitement that the world is waking up again after winter hits them hard and takes over. Not sure, but hoping it’s a short phase, too.

    From what you said in this video, you could probably figure a lot out by solo training the basics and then trying the same stuff when they’re together. If each of them are great solo and then once they’re together they lose it then you might have to do recall with both of them because if I recall correctly, you trained Mikey solo and got him free flying, and then trained Mia and she got to be with Mikey for her first free fly, I’m not sure if you have ever done extensive recall with both of them in the garden.

      To free flight train a bird takes time and patience, anywhere between 3-6 months for a flighted bird. It’s a lot of desensitisation, positive reinforcement, getting diet right, a bunch of recall etc. Basically around 20 hours worth of knowledge. There are professional free flight trainers and mentors which help.

    • @mallorieryan3034

      Can you explain why that might be? Not sure I understand.

    • @greenbirdbrigade
      @greenbirdbrigade 2 года назад +3

      Sure! The dry mix has quite a lot of nutrient rich foods that are high in protein, carbs, and sugar foods. High energy diet like this, particularly in the Spring, translates to time to make babies for birds. Their behavior seems hormonal and the diet is encouraging the hormonal behavior. Ideally, it is best to feed very little fat, protein, carbs, and sugar, particularly during the mating season to avoid this.

    • @mallorieryan3034
      @mallorieryan3034 2 года назад +2

      @@greenbirdbrigade Thank you for the explanation. I can definitely see how this could be the reason. But its still a bit odd that this behaviour is not happening with Mummy human.

      Def can’t be the diet, we have fed raw fresh whole foods majority of the time we have had them, only did pellets for around 1-1.5 years if that out of the 5.5 years we have had them. The dry mix is still chop, just dry. It’s more I’ve slacked off with training, mummy human is their main person, and of course hormones playing a part.

  • @percyscam

    wow! i was just thinking (worrying) about this today. my ringneck, who is in a first hormonal season (probably a female), has been flying around crazily in my house and does exactly what you described: flies to a high point, and just starts screaming for God knows what reason, completely ignores me when i recall her as if i don’t exist even if i show her bananas/apples. and same with you, she has been much more obedient with my sister although i’m the main caregiver.
    i struggled so much with this at the beginning because she became super aggressive and bit me so bad but never my sister, but i eventually accepted it as hormones and not take it too personally, just to take precautions as the season passes like letting her out mostly in the evening when she’s calmer and learning to avoid the bites. sorry to hear you too are struggling with this! as many have already suggested, i guess taking some precautions for freeflight would be good since it seems much riskier now with all the hormones! hoping together with you that the season passes soon :’)

  • @mimthyss

    Ahh, it can happen a LOT that there seems to suddenly be a favourite human. It's ok for them to have a preference, but it should feel like '60-40', best case scenario 50-50 but that's pretty unlikely haha. Sounds like all the interaction between mummy human has kept them much more strongly bonded to her, and that you guys need to change up the dynamic a bit! I would say try only letting you use their favourite treats and go back to the basics of recall indoors and in the garden with them. Rebuild the trick from the ground up in a way. Have mummy human only use their 2nd or probably even 3rd favourite treats to make going to her less rewarding for the time being, to help tip the scales back in your favour a bit! You could also try having her recall them and only you giving treats, but maybe that would be confusing for them? You know best of course on what action to take but just a couple ideas. It could just be hormones for sure, but since they're perfect with mummy human still I think it's a bit more of a "playing favourites" thing or a combination!
    Also, I don't think it's a "lost respect" thing at all, that's just very unlikely to be the way parrots view these things. Try to see from their perspective - why is ignoring you and continuing to fly around more valuable than recalling? Why is it less valuable than recalling for mummy human? Then hopefully you can find the root of the problem! :)

    • @mimthyss
      @mimthyss 2 года назад

    Also my female Catalina Macaw is so hormonal that my vet suggested an implant for this time of year. I went with her suggestion and aside from Amelia being a bit less nippy, not a lot has changed. She is a very high strung bird in general. I give her a high dose of Avian Calm (L Theanine) in her water which also seems to help with her neurotic pacing

    • @muurrarium9460
      @muurrarium9460 2 года назад +1

      So...your bird is not getting enough exercise, so now you drug her?
      And plze just make sure you feed her a certain dose per beak, not somewhat random in her water, you know that one day they drink more than the other.
      (I hate putting any animal under hormal control, I had so many side-effects with the birthcontrol for humans I think it is cruel to put them in animals that cannot complain if they feel not alright with it. Of course they will calm down if they feel miserable! Spaying/neutering is fine btw, that is just a one-time event. I know you cannot neuter birds, but really...unless it is to stop excessive egg laying.... dont.)
      You can control hormones easily with adjusting a diet: no bird turns into a raging breeder when there is not an abundance of food around.

    • @MrJdubz100
      @MrJdubz100 2 года назад +2

      I don’t think it has done anything but no I didn’t do it because she wasn’t getting enough exercise. I talked with my avian vet about her in depth and they suggested that I try it so I did. I put L theanine in her water in a dose thats safe even if she drank every last drop which she obviously never does. My avian vet said that its fine and wont hurt. I do these things to bring comfort to my bird. I wish you weren’t judgmental about it but it is what it is.

    • @muurrarium9460
      @muurrarium9460 2 года назад +1

      @@MrJdubz100 Just shocked! Not judgemental. I have had several occasions where I did not agree with my avian vets. One of them is still in the stone-age about clipping flight feathers, for example.
      Usually the diet is crap, or just out of whack with the actual needs of the bird and the cause of so many problems (like with us humans).
      Just like those "fit for all parrots" pellets: you know it is bullshit, they come from all over the world, in very different sizes.
      Nobody feeds their racehorse the same as the retired pet horse in the backyard, but we expect all our birds to be 'the same, average'.

    • @MrJdubz100
      @MrJdubz100 2 года назад

      She eats a pretty solid diet. I don’t feed her raw foods often but I feed her Birdtricks pellets and the seasonal feeding system and that didn’t make a noticeable difference. I tried increasing her sleep as much as realistically possible but seeing as she lives in my room thats a bit of a tough one to increase (I rent a room in a house so its not ideal right now as far as parrots getting lots of sleep goes but I do give them just over 10 hours per night, this is the best I can offer). I give her UVB and take her out in the sun on the weekends, I try my best with what I have. I feel pretty confident in her diet though as it is what Birdtricks recommends and feeds their macaws.

    I would really consider the change in diet as a big factor. I feel like it’s not intuitive to people that their birds start having behaviorial issues after big changes in diet, but I watch it happen on Instagram all the time. I told my husband I would reserve judgment about the recent diet change videos until after a handful of months because I see it go so poorly so often. :/
    People are so well-intentioned and naturally think giving their birds a “healthier” diet full of a lot of different plants must be good, but the problem is any individual bird species evolved only to eat fairly specific foods, whereas plants as a broad category are high in potential irritants and things that modulate hormones and the immune system, which is why in any environment most plants are only consumed by a handful of species that evolved to handle them and not just every species that’s around. I was skeptical of the things that guy said in that hour long video because he didn’t have a lot of data to back anything up, other than stuff like cockatoos in the wild will eat grubs, which is great to know about cockatoos, but says nothing about other species or other foods.
    In the wild parrots are capable of handling a much less varied diet than humans, but we know that most humans cannot actually tolerate every herb or vegetable or nut or seed or grain they come across. If we knew the natural diet of macaws with any specificity, it would likely be ideal to feed them something like that diet. But feeding them a variety of stuff that grows all over the world is going to have unpredictable effects. They could be more hormonal due to diet (which is common with more nutrients even absent irritants) or they could be feeling a bit irritable because they don’t feel as well as they did before the introduction of a lot of new and potentially powerful plant compounds. Herbs and other plants have powerful effects on mood in humans, so it wouldn’t make sense if they didn’t effect parrots.
    I think it could be worth returning them to their old diet for a month, observing the results, and maybe trying the new diet again for a month just to see what you notice. I’ve just seen so many people on IG who clearly love their parrots so much so they get on a natural diet bandwagon, and suddenly their bird is hostile or broody or plucking. I’ve seen similar behavior in people who radically alter their diet to include lots of plants they didn’t eat before, and I know from my own experience with herbs and assorted intolerances to some plants that most people don’t realize how likely an influence their diet is on the new issues they’ve started experiencing.
    Best wishes to all of you!

      We have had them on a raw diet majority of their lives with us, so it’s not really new, we just switched back, only ever fed pellets for maybe 12-18 months out of the 5.5 years we have had Mikey. Yea there’s more variation now, but only by the very very very slightest %

    I would just say try to not rehearse bad behaviors. Maybe instead of flying them alone do more short flights in your garden. Get really into trick training so that you increase the positive times they have with you. Get really focused on making those good memories happen with them through hormone season. Then when you do fly do it with the whole family but make sure you're the person with the treats for a while. It's okay to take breaks from free flights if all they do is teach them bad habits. Every fun time doing something naughty is encouraging them to keep doing it, but that all said I bet with lots of focused time in your garden this will blow over after the hormones calm down.

    that crow "Get the fuck out of my neighborhood!"
    for real tho, coming from dog training - I know birds aren't dogs, but it's just a thought, and this is no criticism - a lot of times people say "oh, suddenly my dog doesn't recall anymore" - when in fact, it's been a slow process over many months, people get used to them always coming, and they stop giving treats or really practicing it, or more often, people become "boring" for their dog outside and the dog thinks "fine, I go find my own fun then (hunting, searching for mischief or just sniffing about). It's then usually a back to the basics thing, training with treats/toys again for recall - and strengthening the bond overall.

Also, look up parrot rescue near where you live. Some offer online education courses to teach you about parrot care. They can also help you to perhaps find a macaw who needs a new great home. Good luck!

      Firstly always rehome over buying a baby. Far too many in need of a new home. These birds aren’t easy. They will break stuff they are not meant too, they are extremely loud, can be aggressive, expensive to keep and ridiculously messy. In regards to free flight.
