I've been shaving my face for years, with a regular razor in the shower, I might add. I am turning 62 next week and I swear this practice has helped keep wrinkles at bay by exfoliating. Never cut myself, hair doesn't grow back coarser, and makeup goes on so smoothly!
I have been shaving for years. I am often told I don’t look my age. I never mix leg razor and face razor. I pay well for face razor and for my legs any old bic will do. I put moisturizing sunscreen on immediately.
Agree, hate when people look away, makes me wonder are they talking to someone in the room with them, instood of the RUclips audience 🤔 🙄 that there suposed to be talking to, Dr Sam never does that, she's the real deal
@@bernadettehynes-cafferkey3917 for me it's basically the opposite, but it's probably because I really hate eye contact, so it feels weird when (even on a video) someone looks directly into the camera, I have to look away from their eyes.
As a guy who shave everyday, your hair doesnt get thicker or grow faster, trust me i wish 😄 1. Shave at the end of your shower with a shaving foam (its basically just a thicker soap, so also cleanses your face) for the smoothest and easiest glide. If you use an oil cleanser at night, that works like a shaving foam too. 2. I wouldnt use any acids besides maybe hyauluronic and such after, as shaving is already exfoliating and removing the top layer of skin, and its extra sensitive after. 3. Shaving often doesnt harm, it actually keeps the skin looking very healthy and clean.
@@NukeMeHarderDaddy Also must say, use the Gillette Mach 3 (probably best Gillette carthridge razor), its safer, easier and faster to shave with. Not necessary to shave at the end of shower, i do it bc it makes the beard soft and thus the blade easier to cut through it, but if doing it for your skin, whenever is fine.
Okay but what's the real difference between thicker hair and hair that just appears thicker? It's not like hair that just looks thick is more desirable. I don't want to risk having thick looking hair all over my face! I don't understand why dermatologists always make this distinction when in reality neither one of those options are desirable. That right there convinced me not to try this tbh because I don't want to be forced to keep doing it forever or have hair that's more noticeable all over my face.
I was noticing a lot more issues with my foundation looking weird, and the little peach fuzzies were slightly darker toward the corners of my lips, so I recently picked up the metal facial razor from Sephora and used it last week. It was nice! I could definitely tell a difference with smoothness of my makeup and skincare. The razor is nice because it has replaceable blades.
Girl, same!!! Thats why im watching this. Im wondering if its due to hormone changes, but in the last few months ive noticed the same things: foundation refusing to look smooth, my peach fuzz in the corners of my mouth turning darker shades n way more noticeable. Im glad im not alone, and im definitely going to start dermaplaning
Was afraid to shave my face at first but now I'm SO glad that I did.. Make up looks better n I don't have to use as much of my serums n moisturizers...
I’ve just started shaving my face at age 60. The best facial treatment ever I can’t believe it. Hair does not grow back thicker or quicker but it does get rid of dead skin and gives me a glow. Best beauty ever.
Not heard the phrase “it’s never too late”. I’m a very positive person and I’m not ready just yet to go off to grazing. Always be positive even when things look bad and you’ll see the outcome, it will always be better. Try it dear. Have a wonderful day and May the lord bless you and your family with health strength and happiness 🙏
@@sharoncrawford566 That was not very nice of you to say. You sound like a snotty little brat. One day you’re going to get older. And hopefully more mature.
@@rjhoward3419 Yea and she's clueless, alot of men prefer older women. And I mean good looking men that are done with mouthy spoiled tattle tale brats......
I haven't taken the plunge and shaved my entire face, but I do shave the area between my brows down to the bridge of my nose, and I'm amazed at how much dead skin I'm able to shave off just in that one small area. It's really very satisfying to see! Everyone is so afraid of hair growing back darker, myself included, but the fine, blond baby hairs between my brows are still the same as they were years ago when I first started shaving, so there's nothing to worry about!
@@guriya119 Yes, it does grow back normal. It's EXACTLY THE SAME as it was when I started shaving. The hair has not grown in thicker or darker. The only way to know I need to shave again is to look in a magnifying mirror under a bright light. That's when I can see all the little hairs! I shave about every 3-4 weeks (when I think about it!). Don't worry! You won't regret it!! It makes such a difference. : )
Never felt the need of shaving my face. My peach fuzz doesn't seem obvious and don't feel it/see it :) Also I've acne prone skin... Thank you for the info!
Hi Dr. Ellis, if you get a sec to answer: 1. 1. Would Paula's Choice BHA liquid be a good option right before or after face shaving or neither? For someone with clogged nose pores. 2. Why is face shaving done on dry skin when all other types of shaving requires shaving cream or oil??? 3. How often do you recommend face shaving? Every two weeks?
Years ago, I was enamored of microdermabrasion. During one session, my esthetician very tactfully mentioned face fuzz and that she'd noticed it on herself. Naturally, I noticed the fuzz on my own face after that. I'm 60 years old and after shaving my face for nearly 25 years, I have no wrinkles. I've only recently begun using vitamin C serum, which is lovely and brightening but haven't tried any acids. I honestly had no idea that my skin should probably look a bit creased until very recently!! I highly recommend this!!
@@nikkidasso6623 hi there. Well, I can highly recommend dermaplaning. I wish I could tell you I use sun screen but I don't. Some skin is more inclined to wrinkle than others - genetics. I've long heard that drinking lots of water is good for your skin and yes, I do that because I don't care for other beverages. I think it would require more water than the recommended amount to actually impact a person's skin. I think that exfoliation and keeping your face clean and properly moisturized are key. I'd opt for skin brightening serums like vitamin c and glycolic acid. As far as exfoliating goes, there are a variety of safe and cost effective ways to do that. Yes to dermaplaning and yes to exfoliating enzymes, which is what I was doing years ago. I used a pumpkin enzyme mask once a week. When I wear foundation, it's a brightening formula. Years ago, I used dewy finish by Clinique and now I use Lift and Luminate by N°7. I've never found a product I love for my neck but feel better about it when I apply a serum (using M3 vitamin C.) I've decided to accept it along with crows feet...which I kinda like.
Judith, I'm in my mid 50s and don't have wrinkles, as such, although I do have a smile line either side of my mouth. But no crows feet or forehead wrinkles, and people are often surprised to learn my age, or hear me talk about my grandchildren. I always thought that it was due to having greasy skin when I was younger, but you've just put me right there! However, my mum and her sisters had younger looking skin up until they were around my age. Then they started getting lots of wrinkles quite fast, but they smoked all their lives and sunbathed using tan oil. I've done neither, so I hope to age a little more gradually from now on. In reply to the woman in her 30s with wrinkles, I'm often mistaken for that age, but it's just a combination of luck and lifestyle. Love the skin you're in and make the most of what you have. Comparisons (even with our younger selves) isn't helpful or good for our wellbeing. We have to live for the here and now.
Thank you - I'll be buying the Versed tool and replacement blades. I bought a different big-manufacturer "dermaplaning" tool but you can't buy replacement blades-I thought I had no other choice. I have to do this about every 3 weeks or more frequently, even though I have blonde hair. And with aging it ain't getting any less frequent!! Whoever takes care of me in old age better do it for me!! For those of you with the stray black chin hair - go and get a certified electrolysis technician to zap them permanently. It's WELL worth it and not very expensive at all.
Just get a medium textured scrub pad it takes all dead skin off the face. Shaving has it's own problems. Same results without the problem's of shaving the face. I found that shaving the face causes itching and making facial hair a problem. Just exfoliate real good three times a week. You'll see brown spot lighten . You'll see fine line's fade away. Texture difference right away. Use your favorite soap or facial cream to use on the scrub pad. You'll be a happy camper 🙂😉
Thank you so much for making this video! It was so nice to get a well rounded view of the different types of hair removal, not just promoting the dermatology way, but also the less expensive options. I purchased a peach fuzz remover from Revlon and wanted to learn more about face shaving before trying it, and this was a huge help! :)
I use a basic Bic disposable shaver. I have done the Derm abrasion when I was younger and it was ok. I have the acne ice pitting scars. I shave and do the Divine Glycolic Acid on my face and have noticed a huge change in the texture of my skin. At 64 I just feel blessed to be healthy and little to no sun damage. Again, thanks for your advice ❤️
Ive been putting this off for years in fear of it growing back thicker but youve put my mind at ease. Im so excited to try this tomorrow and have less cakey looking makeup.
I dermaplaned for the first time today. I’m 50. I had normal blonde fuzz but started to really feel like I got fuzzier recently. No one noticed but me and I gave it a whirl. I used the Gillette Venus dermaplaning razor I picked up from Walgreens. It was so comfortable. I barely felt the blade on my skin. I tried to not go over the same area twice but at the end missed one or two areas and went upward to get those shorter rough patches. The downward didn’t work in that area. But I did short feathery 45 degree angle strokes otherwise. My prep was washing with cetaphil foaming cleanser which is my new fave facial wash. I then wiped with rubbing alcohol pad. Skin was clean and dry. Afterward I wiped with micellar water and also witch hazel. I applied the Gillette serum I bought which was calming and lovely. It has hylauronic acid, niaciniamide, aloe, witch hazel and cucumber water. Very gentle. I’ll put more on tonight. Tomorrow I’ll use my regular lotions. Just giving skin a break overnight to calm. So far no rash. Hoping for no issues this week. I’m actually glad I did it myself. I feel like if I went to a salon it would have been a deeper exfoliation causing more sensitivity. My skin seems to be tolerating the dry planing tonight. It’s been several hours and I’m not red at all. I will hopefully only need to do this monthly. I hope.
Omg this feels life changing for me. I know that sounds a little over dramatic but I have PCOS and I have a lot of facial hair that I have always been so self conscious about. I pluck and wax but I have always been scared to shave because I didn't want it to grow back darker and thicker. So to hear you say it won't literally is going to change my life. I just now went to Amazon and ordered me some of the eye brow razors and they will be here in 2 days! 😬 I can't wait to try this!
@@julienicklaus9545 I tried it and now it is a regular part of my skincare routine. I love it! It has made my skin so much cleaner looking and feeling. And I don't have to worry about the fear of a long stray hair somewhere on my face.
I dislike the way my face feels covered with stubble for a few days after shaving. It seems like by the time the stubble feels as though it’s grown out enough to feel smoother, it’s time to shave again.
When I do that my skin doesn't peel like that. I do those everywhere day. It's great, I'm 66, feel like 50 and wish I had known about this way back. So much better for your skin
My biggest issue with dermaplaning is the hair grows back as soon as the next day or two. Like the next day I can feel the stubble in the areas I shaved (like near my hairline) and it feels so weird. Not sure it’s worth it to have baby soft skin for a day just to have it feel awful and prickly while it grows back
@Rachel Hein I have the exact same concern. I tried it once a couple years ago and when my husband kissed me he was like “eeew!” Because my face was stubbly. I feel like to prevent this I’d have to shave every other day.
Came here to ask the same. I have these stubborn little chin hairs that pop up within 24 hours of dermablading. I used to just try and tweeze them but hoped the shave would be easier. If I have to do it every day, it will definitely cause irritation.
To me if you are blonde and just have peach fuzz it’s one thing. If you have always had lots of hair as a woman on your face I wouldn’t recommend it. It will grow back thicker.
Hi Dr Sam,thank you so much for such an informative video! You've comprehensively answered all the questions I've needed addressed ,before I begin my face shaving journey on my 63 year old skin! Many thanks, all the way from Scotland x
Very well-known dermatologist told me years ago that all studies show over the last few decades that shaving does NOT affect new hair growth and is fine for your skin.
Just dermplaned for the first time. This is my "trail." I hope this process helps & is healthy for my skin; using razors isn't so helpful for me, though they're convenient; I get dermatitis out breaks.
Thank you so much for your excellent explanation of how you do this. I've been shaving for the last several years ever since I attended a clinic here in Paris regarding how to improve face preparation for makeup application. The results have really been great. However, your video taught me some new tricks! I must say that I have become a fan of yours after learning from your adapalene tretinoin video ...which i have recommended to many people.
Threading was introduced to the USA in the last 12 years which is widely used in the eastern countries for ages. I learned it from my mother and it has 0 side effect if it was done effectively. The hair comes back as normal. I am really hesitant for shaving as the hair might come back thicker like male hair so I am not sure of course there is skin benefit to shaving as you made it more clear and if a dermatologist is using why not. But then next step is to learn and practice
Hi Dr Sam I do "shave my face" with the eyebrow razers mentioned and have done for a few years. I have very sensitive skin with both rosacea and eczema, so I'm cautious about what I use on my skin afterwards for a few days. I wouldn't dream of doing it during an active flare though. The day before I use a 1% BHA from paula's choice calm range. I then use a 5% mandelic acid toner by wishtrend pre shave and only soothing/calming skincare post shave. I wouldn't be able to use an AHA etc post shave and have to avoid anything harsh for even up to three days afterwards, including my retinoid. I do however use azelaic acid the following day to help with any redness/irritation and keep my skin clear. My skin is very reactive though and perhaps needs more gentle care than most people will. I do get quite a bit of manual exfoliation on my skin, as well as hair removal. Best wishes.
These are great recs and I think those with sensitive skin will totally benefit from reading this comment and applying some of the products your recommend!
@@galato4234 As discussed in the video the hair itself is not affected - no change to the hair colour, texture or amount. it doesn't matter how many weeks in between.
Hi ,can you guide me i have dry skin because i live in very cold country,i want to ask i did the dermaplaning on dry skin, and then i have noticed that i white things was apearing from my skin as i was stretching the skin,i think that white things were white heads,i wanted to ask is it okay to dermaplane the skin which is full of white heads ,and should i apply some oil before dermaplaning?please reply soon
@@mishoamad9097 Without being able to see your skin it's not really something that can be diagnosed. Whiteheads are little plugs of dead skin, oil and debris that have not oxidised like blackheads. These mostly occur on oilier skin and really shouldn't be caused by dermoplaning. I would worry that it is something else ??? perhaps a rash, infection or even milia. I think it's important to get the "white things" diagnosed properly. Perhaps your family doctor/general practitioner or even your local pharmacist could help with that. Running a blade over bumpy skin can be problematic and that's why it's not recommended for active acne, where it could spread bacteria. Stretching the skin gently shouldn't cause whiteheads to form tbh. Diagnosing skin issues yourself is usually not the best approach and I think it's important to get this accurately diagnosed, prior to repeating any dermaplaning. I hope that helps.
I love face shaving as you call it and I use the Henson Shaver, which is already at a 45degree angle and manufactured in an aerospace environment. Precision = safe shave, no cuts and single blade. And above all, no landfill plastic garbage…..
I've been curious to try this, but I've got one concern. Even though my hair is dark and Mediterranean, it grows 'weak' and even shaving my legs give me ingrown hairs. Plucking my eyebrows inevitably gives me those. That's why I bleach my whiskers, and I don't wax them. While a smoother makeup application sounds great, ingrown peachfuzz doesn't. 😕
Using one of the gentle acids she recommends and moisturizing properly should help keep ingrown hairs at bay, you just have to keep up with it! One of my favorite things to do after shaving to prevent ingrowns or bumps is using a thin layer of vaseline over my moisturizer.
I started dermaplaning at home at the beginning of the year, and I love how much softer my skin feels. I will say, I think I have more breakouts than I used to, especially along my jaw line. I probably need to be more careful about keeping my blade clean and changing the razor more often. Great tips in this video!
I shaved my face tonight for the first time. My one huge comment is running the razor on dry skin didn't seem right and didn't feel good. In the middle I stopped and applied a very thin layer of shaving cream. This helped. Afterwards I used hydroxy acid and Cereve. If there's any issue I'll send my findings. Happy New Year! Thanks.
Use aloe vera gel or natural aloe wera pulp apply on face and then remove hair. After shaving wash face with water or mild cleanser and apply hyaluronic acid on moist face and enjoy the glow. Personal experience 😉
I shave every 2 weeks my whole face and it never grew darker or bigger, I pluck my eyebrows, beard and mustache 2 times a week for the thick hairs and then i shave it once every 2 weeks, I have done it for the last 3 years. Best decision ever! Although I always do it in a wet face with conditioner (my skin is way too sensitive for doing it dry) The only problem is that is not a sustainable product, you often have to throw away the blade once is worn out, and most cheap blades are not very sharp so you have to be somewhat agressive, Im looking for sustainable options! I have been considering to buy a male shaver with a razor blade sharpener so I can have something reusable and friendly with the enviorment!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and in such a clear and concise way! I cannot wait to receive my first dermaplaning treatment and hydrofacial. I would also love to try microdermabrasion but I don’t want to overdo it! ☺️❤️
I have a few questions. Chances are they've all been addressed in this video, but me being me, I just want to get the answers again. 1. This doesn't have to be done all over the face, right? 2. Being that it's by nature thinner hair, when it grows back, will it be almost sheer (odd question I know)? 3. If someone has darker hair, will there be a line of demarcation between the shaved hair, and skin that hasn't been shaved?
Thank you so much for making this video! I’ve been wanting to try dermaplaning for a year now and heard bad things about people’s skin breaking out. But thanks to your video, it makes me less worried and I now know that your face needs before and after care when you do dermaplaning. Thanks again!
Been doing it for 20 years. I apply oil to my face and shave it with a new, regular razor. I will break out the eyebrow razor for the nooks and crannies. The eyebrow razor will be good for about 10 uses. Then I wash with CeraVe hydrating wash and moisturize. I do this once a month. To suggest using an AHA after shaving is evil, lol.
How long before you start to see the hair growing back? Does it look worse because it's just the thick base of the hair? I purchased the Dermaflash, which says to use once a week, but I'm worried that it will look gross halfway through the week, haha.
What about people who have hormonal issues, and their facial hairs are dark to begin with? Like their upper lip hair and the hair close to the side of the face/near sideburns? My best friend in high school had that, and to her they recommended waxing(paperless) which she did get done, over shaving. Since those hairs are thicker, they didn’t recommend shaving. Waxing can thin out the hair over time
I did this earlier today I was so excited I think I over did it to the point where I have razor burns and red marks. Next time very light strokes. Thanks for the info.
My facial hair came back thicker and dark after shaving 😢😢it was terrible and I found out about Doctor isibor Herbal product and cleanser that helped balance my hormones and remove the hairs completely it’s been 3 years now no hair growth
Thank you for this video!!!! I had sworn off shaving my face ( not the correct term dermaplaning) lol, and often I was breaking out after. However, I was not properly prepping my face and I didn't know to use a topical exfoliant after. I just assumed that was a no no. Your video was extremely informative and I'm starting back ASAP. I'm so excited! I have dark hair and lots of peach fuzz. Yaye! No more Sasquatch face!
I love seeing the peach fuzz come off of my face but every time I do this a few days later I break out all over my face… not sure what I’m doing wrong, I sanitize every time I’m done and wash my face regularly
Spray with La Roche-Posay Serozinc before and after shaving. It's really great for preventing this. I also usually spray after cleansing for the next couple of days
It comes back more after you do it!!! Don't let anyone tell you it doesnt. I know because I experimented I only did one side of my face..and now that one side of my face has more hair.
Hair covers skin for protection. Shaving face can make thicker, whisker hair. My face is very soft with peach fuzz. You can use exfoliating scrub sponges. I use derma rollers and they work great on scars & wrinkles.
@@Lucy-vx9nn Yes. I thought I could do it just on certain occasions and thought my peach fuzz would come back. Good thing I’m wearing a mask when I go out in public.
i shave my face about twice a month with a straight razor, i was using the twinkle razors but i felt like i was being wasteful then i switched. Its definitely a little learning curve and not so beginner friendly but i like it now. i usually do Dr.Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Face peel pads (ES) after then a soothing sleeping mask. i love it!!
I started shaving my chin area about a year ago and I have stubble every day. Big mistake.🤣🤣 As I age, my face is getting hairier and hairier. Thank goodness I was born blonde so have fair hair but in the sun, wow, can you ever see this peach fuzz. I need to look into these products. I'm worried about being in a nursing home some day with no one shaving me and ending up with a beard. LOL
Marilyn I thought I was the ONLY one who ever thought about the nursing home thing!! It really IS a concern for me. Another thing is being in the hospital-post surgery isn’t conducive to shaving every day!! I’ve got several major surgeries coming up and I’m obsessing about the whole situation! 😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫

Great video Dr. Ellis! I love dermaplaning! In my opinion, it's the secret to glass skin. I'm way overdue but need to wait for my acne to settle down. The results are amazing!
Do you mind me asking what your hair looks like growing back? I’ve never tried dermaplaning and I’m nervous for the hair to grow back. Is it similar looking to when leg hair grows? Or does it feel stubbley when you touch it?
@Dr Sam Ellis, I am 45, don't wear makeup, live in sunblock but I have autoimmune disorders and I am on many medications which leave every organ feeling parched - eyes, skin, privates, you name it. I started cleansing with micellar water or cleansing oil as they don't irritate my skin like other products and I use macadamia oil on my face. People have recommended so many products for my skin but being disabled, I can't afford them. I know skin changes as we age. Am I taking the wrong approach and would "shaving" help keep my skin healthier? I just want healthy skin.
Good evening, Dr. Ellis. I saw your dermaplaning video today. I found it quite interesting and fact filled. I have not done this before. I am 59 years old and have a condition called poly cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) with a high testosterone level. I have always had excess facial hair. To be honest, I am terrified if dermaplaning would work for me. My usual routine consists of Nair for face (which now burns my skin, as my skin has thinned as I have aged) or electric tweezing (very painful). My grandmother used to shave her face and continually grew a full, thick beard and mustache if she did not maintain her routine. I "defuzz" my face every 3 to 4 days, or it takes over. Suffice it to say, I am very self-conscious and would like to know if this is a viable solution for me. Your expertise would be greatly appreciated. I can not comprehend that this is done every 4 to 6 weeks. Thank you for your help with this. Have a great evening.
If you can tolerate it, waxing works very well and doesn’t leave a stubble like shaving would. I also have PCOS and waxing lasts the longest and looks the best
hello dr sam. as a 14 year old girl , i'd say my skin is very hairy and the dark hairs are very visible. they also grow on my nose and its making me insecure. do you recommend me shaving my face ? thank you
doesn't the peach fuzz grow back thicker? I knew a poor girl back in high school who started shaving bc the kids noticed her peach fuzz and made negative comments about it and so she shaved and regretted it afterwards. Her hair grew back so thick and course it was almost manly. I felt so bad for her she finally went to a professional laser removal expert and they helped get her self esteem back. You probably shouldn't do this unless you are willing to suffer the same consequences. This doc should not be promoting it either.
WRONG. Correlation ≠ causation, and the plural of anecdote is NOT evidence! People start shaving when they get hair, which is, coincidentally; PUBERTY. you know what else happens during puberty? Existing hair gets THICKER!
Once you shave for the first time, is it like any other type of shaving, once you start, the hair comes back fuller and thicker and then you have to shave that spot forever?
@@Mrs.VonChin Well, shaving doesn't magically bestow you with more hair follicles, so hair won't grow fuller from shaving. The coarseness of hair is determined by your genetics as well. Shaving may make it *seem* like it grew thicker, but it's not. By shaving, you cut the top part of the hair off (this top part is smooth because it was either new from the follicle or has rubbed off on clothes), leaving a blunt edge behind which gives the false appearance of a "thicker" hair.
I have been doing this for years and I have tried several dermaplaning devices. The ONLY thing I will continue to use is the single blade BIC razors, they work better and are cheap and I get a new blade each time. The best. As a former esthetician I will not spent $$$ on fancy devices when a BIC razor does a better job for me.
My question is when the hair grows back does it feel like stubble? That's the #1 reason I wouldn't do it. I don't want to feel like I'm growing a beard as the hair grows back!
May I ask your procedure? Dry shave or use shaving cream? Also, your procedure afterward. As far as skincare, etc. I dry shaved in the a.m. with men’s razor, gently cleansed face using a clean microfiber washcloth (no actives) followed by my moisturizing sunscreen. *No sun exposure I should add*. I am peeling like crazy, face feels and looks sunburned - now I’m slathering it with aloe vera alternating with organic virgin coconut oil cold pressed & unrefined to combat dryness, flaking. It’s perfectly miserable! :( No makeup, no skincare for me until this subsides!! Thank you in advance, providence51 Sure would appreciate your feedback from your experience :) Dr. Sam Ellis, I’m tagging you - HELP! Also, would like to hear your expertise on what seems to potentially be Seborrheic Dermatitis. ie, mostly in eyebrows but affects ears from time to time. Thank you in advance as well !!
@@happywife-e7g I use Aveeno sensitive skin razor gel. Very gentle, then after shaving just my regular vanicream moisturizer followed with my sunscreen. Pretty basic, when I use the shaving cream I do not nick myself, hope this is helpful
Love this! I had dermaplaning years ago, and do it at home and I agree with all the benefits you talk about. I've used all the tools you mentioned. I think they are all good options. I wish it were more main stream for women: not such a taboo topic. Thank you for this!
Dr. Ellis - my mom, who is now deceased, shaved for decades. At age 71, when she was in hospital for hip surgery, she did not bother bringing her razor, so when I walked into her room, I saw she had almost a full mustache. Why?
Why would I need to use a chemical exfoliant right after I just exfoliated my skin with dermaplaning? Why one does not substitute the other? It sounds like an overkill to use both especially right after the other.
I use tretinoin .05% nightly. Would you recommend skipping it on the days you shave? If not, where would you use it in your routine? Thank you and great video!
Definitely skip it on the night you shave. It won't hurt to miss one night, and it will save you from subsequent irritation and redness. Be gentle with your skin! Why risk the irritation?
Thank you for this excellent educational video. I get my first professional dermaplaning treatment tomorrow and want to care for my skin in the best possible way after, or do on my own at home later. ❤
Using a new eyebrow blade every time is horrible for the environment, because of the plastic. Is there a tool where you can change the blade every couple of times?
Hi Samm, thank you for this video. What is your experience with woman with thick, dark and a lot of facial hair? Does it look ‘worse’ after a few days because you cut it at a thick part of the hair?
I need to tell you... you look so much more beautiful without make up! very beautiful! im excited to try it out myself! thank you for the camparison with the bold man, that is such a good thing to say as I am a bit annoyed about that fear of so many... :)
Diluted Apple cider vinegar is a much better alternative to alchol. Safer and acts as a toner, spot treatment and a good facial cleaner its also a game changer for oily skin (like me)
I’ve been doing this for years with an eyebrow razor. In the beginning I definitely cut myself a time or two, but after a few tries it’s a piece of cake and makeup sits so much better on your face.
I wish I could get rid of hairs on my face but I use Tretinoin so I can’t. I’m on oral Minoxidil which caused hair on my face. So to get my hair on my head to grow back the Minoxidil makes my facial hairs to grow. But because of Tretinoin I can’t shave or wax them.
What about people with metal allergies? It’s very difficult to find a titanium blade for this purpose. Can you recommend something? Also, as we all try to limit single-use plastics, what options are there for this.
I've been shaving my face for years, with a regular razor in the shower, I might add. I am turning 62 next week and I swear this practice has helped keep wrinkles at bay by exfoliating. Never cut myself, hair doesn't grow back coarser, and makeup goes on so smoothly!
What tool do you use?
Yup…. I’m also 62…. My skin looks wonderful….

Me, too! I use a separate razor for my face, another one for my legs. Keep it super clean. Love the smooth look shaving gives me.
I have been shaving for years. I am often told I don’t look my age. I never mix leg razor and face razor. I pay well for face razor and for my legs any old bic will do. I put moisturizing sunscreen on immediately.
Can I just say I appreciate how you look directly into the camera lens. You are very photogenic with a lovely smile.

As a guy who shave everyday, your hair doesnt get thicker or grow faster, trust me i wish 😄
I looooove that you shared this with us. I was screaming from the shower “How tf do men do this?!”
@@NukeMeHarderDaddy Also must say, use the Gillette Mach 3 (probably best Gillette carthridge razor), its safer, easier and faster to shave with.
Not necessary to shave at the end of shower, i do it bc it makes the beard soft and thus the blade easier to cut through it, but if doing it for your skin, whenever is fine.
oh man exfoliating after shaving would be brutal lol. but yeah agree with everything u wrote
You are a life saver 🙏🙏🙏🙏 Thankyou idk y i believed that lie too lol but thnxs
You might be touching your face more often to feel you smooth skin ! I know I do, but I wash my hands a lot !
I am also afraid and i have big and thick side locks please suggest me about shaving

I’ve just started shaving my face at age 60. The best facial treatment ever I can’t believe it. Hair does not grow back thicker or quicker but it does get rid of dead skin and gives me a glow. Best beauty ever.
I have also!
Why in the world would u do that? At 60 it isnt going to do much anyway to improve your face now!!!
Not heard the phrase “it’s never too late”. I’m a very positive person and I’m not ready just yet to go off to grazing. I feel like it can work great for some people, but for others, the risks and upkeep outweigh the benefits.
I agree my facial hair grew back darker and coarse
I haven't taken the plunge and shaved my entire face, but I do shave the area between my brows down to the bridge of my nose, and I'm amazed at how much dead skin I'm able to shave off just in that one small area. It's really very satisfying to see! Everyone is so afraid of hair growing back darker, myself included, but the fine, blond baby hairs between my brows are still the same as they were years ago when I first started shaving, so there's nothing to worry about!
so did the hair grew back like normal ?

I dont believe u have no wrinkles!!! Stop the BS!!
@@sharoncrawford566 Seriously? Ok. Believe or don't believe. Not my channel...just my flawless face talking.
@@deftlefthand9964 I have wrinkles and I'm 30 :(
@@nikkidasso6623 hi there.
How did it go ? What was your pre & post care?

@@julienicklaus9545 I tried it and now it is a regular part of my skincare routine. I love it! It has made my skin so much cleaner looking and feeling. And I don't have to worry about the fear of a long stray hair somewhere on my face.
@@kaylasprettynails2848 Does the regrowth feel really stubbly? How often are you doing it? So you don’t regret starting?
Surely peach fuzz/vellus hairs have a purpose like insulating the skin or keeping certain dirt from setting into the skin.

Yes
Absolutely true
definitely! but also love dr. shereene Idriss
Dr. V is gorgeous too 😄 She specialises in skin care for brown & black people.
I use the disposable Twinkle eyebrow razors and it really improves the look of foundation and does make the skin feel so soft.
I dislike the way my face feels covered with stubble for a few days after shaving. It seems like by the time the stubble feels as though it’s grown out enough to feel smoother, it’s time to shave again.
Ladies with natural light hair ..can you "dermaplane" the upper lip hair? Or is that a no-no?
That is how shaving works regardless of what part if the body it is done on, depending how fast bost hair grows person to person. Ffs
That is what i was wondering. She didn't say anything about stubble. That in itself is a major turn off. Oh well guess I'm keeping the fuzz.
To me if you are blonde and just have peach fuzz it’s one thing. If you have always had lots of hair as a woman on your face I wouldn’t recommend it. It will grow back thicker.

Thank you so much! It makes me so happy when people can learn something new or helpful from my videos!
I used to get a full face threading and liked it but dermaplaning done correctly is so much better. I still get my eyebrows threaded
I use the Dermaflash tool a couple of times a month and love it. Thank you for your content!
If you don't shave for six week, what's happen? the hair will grow darker? or since even growing, could appear to be more hair? thank you.
@@galato4234 As discussed in the video the hair itself is not affected - no change to the hair colour, texture or amount. it doesn't matter how many weeks in between.

Thanks for the great explanation Dr Ellis, you’re always so engaging to watch!
I dermaplan at home and at my dermatologist’s office. I love it.
@@THExBREAKFASTxMONKEY ...and make sure not to shave AGAINST the hairgrowth.
I highly doubt that would even happen. Fuzz is much different than hair.

I started dermaplaning at home at the beginning of the year, and I love how much softer my skin feels. I will say, I think I have more breakouts than I used to, especially along my jaw line. I probably need to be more careful about keeping my blade clean and changing the razor more often. Great tips in this video!
Oily skin is something to take into consideration
Also let’s see the before and after. Thank you
I shaved my face tonight for the first time. Thanks.
My age is 66 and have combination skin.
use vaseline
Use aloe vera gel or natural aloe wera pulp apply on face and then remove hair.
After shaving wash face with water or mild cleanser and apply hyaluronic acid on moist face and enjoy the glow.
Personal experience 😉
Everyone recommends doing this on dry skin but I find that to be irritating to my skin. Is there a reason dry skin is recommended?
i’ve seen some videos where people have recommended using oil when doing it instead of just doing it on dry skin.
I put on squalane oil before hand as I also find it too irritating on dry skin
I use threading for the area around my eyebrows and jawlines. It makes your skin smooth and it creates the optical effect for a more defined jawline.
Haha, definitely not everyone will be able to tolerate actives after shaving!
What kind of oil ? 😊 thank you 🪒
How long before you start to see the hair growing back? Does it look worse because it's just the thick base of the hair? I purchased the Dermaflash, which says to use once a week, but I'm worried that it will look gross halfway through the week, haha.
Wow ! Your skin is even prettier without makeup! You have gorgeous skin !

I love seeing the peach fuzz come off of my face but every time I do this a few days later I break out all over my face… not sure what I’m doing wrong, I sanitize every time I’m done and wash my face regularly
don’t use makeup 24-48 hours after doing this. I also change my pillowcase so it’s all clean. this is what made me not break out anymorr after shaving
Spray with La Roche-Posay Serozinc before and after shaving. It's really great for preventing this. I also usually spray after cleansing for the next couple of days

¿Puedo ponerme ácido glicólico después de un dermaplaning? ¿Puedo hacerme dermaplaining en todo el cuerpo?
Have you tried laser?
Would suggest laser as a permanent option
hello dr sam. as a 14 year old girl , i'd say my skin is very hairy and the dark hairs are very visible. they also grow on my nose and its making me insecure. do you recommend me shaving my face ? thank you
doesn't the peach fuzz grow back thicker?
That's not true of shaving, any where on the body.
@@kirasgirl tell that to my legs. And other areas. That never had an issue until I decided to shave them. LOL.
I don’t like the way my face feels after dermaplaning, I like the way itnlooks but I just have to get use to how it feels.
I bought this same Versed tool and started doing it recently! Love it! So annoyed I did not do it sooner!
I think they did a great job with this tool!
Dr.Ellis I have a couple of dark spots on my face and have olive skin, what is the best method to remove them ?
I'd love to find out. My skin is fair, got some sun spots that definitely don't look like freckles.
My question is when the hair grows back does it feel like stubble? That's the #1 reason I wouldn't do it. I don't want to feel like I'm growing a beard as the hair grows back!
I use a regular men’s razor because I sometimes nick my face with the eyebrow blades, something about that 45 degree angle lol
,
May I ask your procedure? Dry shave or use shaving cream? Also, your procedure afterward. As far as skincare, etc.
I dry shaved in the a.m. with men’s razor, gently cleansed face using a clean microfiber washcloth (no actives) followed by my moisturizing sunscreen. *No sun exposure I should add*. I am peeling like crazy, face feels and looks sunburned - now I’m slathering it with aloe vera alternating with organic virgin coconut oil cold pressed & unrefined to combat dryness, flaking. It’s perfectly miserable! :(
No makeup, no skincare for me until this subsides!!
Thank you in advance, providence51
Sure would appreciate your feedback from your experience :)
Dr.
Wow idesire my face to be clear
do you not get stubble??
Dr. Ellis - my mom, who is now deceased, shaved for decades. At age 71, when she was in hospital for hip surgery, she did not bother bringing her razor, so when I walked into her room, I saw she had almost a full mustache. Why?
After a few days my skin feels dry. Its just the hair beginning to grow back. The hair is coarser too. I regret it.
SKIP IT OMFG
What sunscreen would u suggest for sensitive skin. Would coconut oil be best???
Iv been doing this since I was a teenager and I'm 60. My skin is so smooth and bright people think im 40 plus my diet.
Thank you for asking this question. There should be an option with blades that can be changed in a handle you keep.
Hi Samm, thank you for this video. What is your experience with woman with thick, dark and a lot of facial hair? Does it look ‘worse’ after a few days because you cut it at a thick part of the hair?
Do people go see a dermatologist preventatively ? And if so, what kind of things are done ?
Is it okay to start shaving with dry skin?? Or should we put some oil before?
I wish I could get rid of hairs on my face but I use Tretinoin so I can’t. I’m on oral Minoxidil which caused hair on my face. So to get my hair on my head to grow back the Minoxidil makes my facial hairs to grow. But because of Tretinoin I can’t shave or wax them.
You can shave if you use tretinoin!
@@DrSamEllis thank you Dr Sam I’ll give it a go x
What about people with metal allergies? It’s very difficult to find a titanium blade for this purpose. Can you recommend something? Also, as we all try to limit single-use plastics, what options are there for this.
Dr. Ellis great informative video; Thank you! What is your opinion on applying a chemical peel after dermaplaning? Thank you in advance!
This was so helpful. How often would I ideally shave...once a month, once a week? Thanks!
I do it every 4ish weeks but I know some people who do it a lot more often!
@@DrSamEllis thank you so much!
@@DrSamEllis is it better to dry shave or wet shave 🪒 for face and why ? Thank you
What about a tiny electric razor (is that what you mean by "multi razor?")
What about micellar water as a prep?
isnt removing dead skin actually harmful? its there for a reason, to protect other layers of skin. I've always thought of it as a bark for a tree
I'd love to do this but just moved to FL. I am outdoors often so these top layers would give more sun protection
keep it if you want your face to look like a bark of a tree.
Hello Dr. Sam i wanted to ask your opinion on using face oils to act as a "shaving cream" while blading. Is this necessary to use?
