Seattle Homeless Family Finds Support in Tent City 3

  • Josiah, Tricia and their son live in Tent City 3, a city-sanctioned tent community in Seattle. Around 70 homeless people call Tent City 3 home. In an ideal world, tent communities should not exist because homeless services should be able to get everyone into housing. But since we don't live in a perfect world and there is a severe lack of housing and shelter beds, sanctioned tent cites provide invaluable support and community.
For one, many of the people who live in Tent City 3 have a job. I know this seems ironic, but homeless shelters do not make it easy for people who are employed to stay. Shelters often have insane rules with curfews that are not conducive to work schedules. Another issue is many shelters require even married couples to separate.
Josiah and Tricia are initially from Alaska. Tricia first came to Seattle to get treatment for drug addiction. Both Josiah and Tricia are now coming up on close to two years sober.
Tricia shares about the challenges homeless families and individuals have to go through to get the help they need. Nonprofit funding is based on specific grant requirements, and if you do not fit those requirements, you cannot get support. Josiah and Tricia are sober and married not wanting to separate. Their only option since they had a young child was Tent City 3.
Think about that for a second: homeless services do not offer support for a married couple with a young child that wants to stay together as a family!
Tricia shares about how their family was not "homeless enough" or "disabled enough" to get support. I know lots of leaders in the homeless sector to not like sanctioned tent cites but as long as homeless services cannot provide help to people when they need it, tent cities fill the gap in the safety net.

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RUclips, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

@@tip6603 There is so much homelessness because wages are not commensurate with the cost of living. Also white folk have been duped into moving further and further away from 'others' and now they are realizing the game played upon them. Example: Manhattanites now living in Newark, NJ and other Jersey areas and living well on their 6 figure NY salaries. I'm glad people in general are beginning to wake up. Besides, EVERY area should be safe and clean but someone creates the haves everything and the barely have enough. The internet has been a huge resource in shining the light on several formerly hidden issues. No one can claim ignorance anymore. Regular folk are putting in work.

@@bevcrusher4177 absolutely. But society decided a long time ago that humanity is important. I for one am thankful for those that take the occasional extra step to make the world better, but what’s better to one is not better to another. I agree that homes shouldn’t be expected to be give out for free just because you don’t have one. There’s plenty of people in the same , and much worse situations. We try to set up “shelters” but ultimately it will never be enough. Even low income housing and all it’s weird restrictions and qualifications is heavily abused and not properly managed or handed out to those truly in need. Yet at the same time, who are we to judge someone’s need as more important than another’s? Life is not easy breezy bountiful. We come kicking and screaming into this world. The whole Darwinism “theory” really is fascinating when you take a step back and just think and look at things as they are versus how your feel. You don’t just get shit for free in this country. Even going to college with nice scholarships isn’t “free”. everything you have is worked for to achieve. Maybe not by you but by your parents or your friends. If your parents taught you that you should ever just expect or demand a handout, they failed in teaching you how to survive in this world straight from the get go. Sucks you’re getting this hate, because of these same people thought with their heads instead of their hearts, they wouldn’t question why there’s not free housing for everyone that want one when our country has basically been in recession since the early 2000s and we act like we’ve grown when things clearly continue to get worse off, especially concerning living wages and housing costs and basic daily essentials. Plenty of us working 2-3 jobs with useless degrees and certifications. We’re all a couple paychecks (or minus a trust fund/stock market trust) away from this situation. Thinking about living in the ghetto, to thinking about living with roomates, to thinking about how we can’t all make the big bucks because it’s just not how life and civilization works unfortunately.
Long story short. I agree, housing shouldn’t be free, but it’s sure nice when there’s programs available for people truly in need. Even if it’s just food and water and a blanket. Nice to know our taxes might be used in SOME helpful way, since it’ll be take regardless. If we could personally decide what our taxes supported financially it’d be even better.

There is no help for people who try to do things the right way. I lived in Seattle years ago, and I am a veteran, I was in college full time, worked part time each day after school. I was not a drinker, drug addict, didn't have a bunch of kids, had no mental issues, didn't live beyond my means, etc. I was doing my best to do everything the right way to start out in life. But, I was hungry. A friend at the time finally convinced me to try for food stamps. After swallowing my pride...
...I went to see if I could get assistance. Because I didn't have any thing "wrong" with me, and because I was in college, I was told that I had to work 25 hours a week to be eligible. I worked 20 hours a week. The rest of the time was in school, on the bus to/from school, back on the bus to/from work, and then studying. There were no "free" moments, no extra hours available.
I was told that if I worked a mere 5 more hours a week, I would be making "too much" money for assistance. Yet, someone that I knew was drunk off her ass, put her arm through a plate glass window, did a lot of damage, and got all kinds of assistance with all kinds of things like rent, food, electric, etc.
If you do or try to do things the right way, no one gives a shit about you. You fall right through the cracks. These places that give assistance are not in the least bit interested in being PRO active, and helping people BEFORE they hit hard times, which would actually save tax payers a WHOLE lot of money, they are reactive, and ONLY for those who completely fuck up their own lives with drugs, alcohol, swarms of kids by different fathers, etc.
And that lady isn't lying. I've been told to lie about things to get benefits. Do you think that those who tell you to lie will be right next to you in court, admitting that they told you to do that when you're standing before a judge to hear your fine and prison sentence? The whole damn system is completely screwed up, and no one seems to give one damn to look at it and say, "Gee, this isn't really working. Let's try a different way." Nothing but political bullshit, and people suffer for it, every day.

Just imagine the fate of some one losing his/her house in their retirement years, because they couldn't come up with this atrocious taxes to feed the govt employees and for rich lobbies who does construction projects, who are friend's with city's administration.

We found ourselves in this with medical costs for two chronically ill children, insurance price increases, and job loss. The newly homeless are people who had jobs, owned homes, and never thought they’d walk this. The government has ruined health care, medical supplies for life support are rising daily, and the bank will want their house back, sick kids or not! The government needs to back pedal and undo many things it’s done in the past 7 years. That’s how they can really help.

I made that comment based on my personal experience. As a single mother of 3 I was in a difficult situation. When my ex husband left the family I was left with the responsibility and financial burden of raising 3 kids. I worked 40 hours per week and every month I was 200 dollars under to sustain my basic living expenses which is rent and utilities. I will add that I didn’t live in a nice home either
I had to be very creative just to pull through each month. I allocated 20 dollars per week to feed my kids
When I finally applied for assistance I was told I made too much money 1100 for a family of 4. In that same lobby sat women with Gucci bags, hair and nails done and I didn’t understand. I realized then that I could quit my job and get on the welfare line or just keep struggling. I chose to keep the struggle. I didn’t want to depend on the fed. I just needed a little help. I worked because I needed to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment
It would have taken so much stress and hardship if I could of had a little help to push me through but I didn’t. Through the grace of God we survived but that experience revealed to me the way the system is designed. They don’t want to help families be strong and self sustain.
This couple reminded me of that
      experience.
I might be wrong but that was my perception

Seattle has plenty of Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, and blue-collar Latinos who rake in over 50k a year. Enough for a condo or an apartment in the 'burbs.
So why does this woman not marry them? She's thick and foxy, and so there's no excuse for her to be homeless. Moreover, she CHOSE to have a kid despite being old (40+) and poor. So She brought it upon herself.

It takes money to move. Cities have programs, not small towns. If they moved to a small town, they would be told to drive to a city for food stamps, etc. In college in Washington, my husband and I needed food stamps. We had to drive to the neighboring city even then, for the appointment, and that was stressful (trying to fill the gas tank).

Inland States are getting just as saturated, it is called overpopulation. Also, jobs aren't as readily available in small towns where the population is growing but the jobs aren't. People kill me saying and dictating what someone should do.

She says it right in the beginning. She was a drug addict. Also, don’t people think before they pack up and move? These tent cities have been there for a long time, didn’t they think about maybe calling ahead to see how much it would cost to live there? They are trying to get on disability, & housing because her husband had a brain injury, and she used to be an addict. But since they couldn’t he finally gets a job. They seem like they’re doing fine but they also made a lot of really poor choices.

Don’t blame the caseworker who suggests that they lie. The system providing for the homeless is underfunded. The agencies are fighting fires every day with the small amount of funds they have. Only higher taxes will improve the way things are, but you can’t overtax their city’s residents, because they’ll move out. Getting a job clearly isn’t enough. Jobs and housing have to go together.

I agree,my daughter is a dental assistant and has one child and they won't give her assistant for a place, nor food assistance. She doesn't make much and the only thing they help with is daycare and she has to pay a portion 52 bucks a week at 12 bucks an hour. How can we all survive with this sad government system. So when they say they help working folks, homeless or not,it's so not true. I pray that things change for the better, and especially for homelessness!

People before you consider picking up and moving anywhere do your home work.. I mean leave no stone unturned.... you gotta research the rent/ housing, employment opportunities..... amazed they would leave Alaska to move to Seattle.... Seattle housing has been out of control for years. And don’t believe the hype about an area having great shelters.. as they found out there’s no such thing... the guidelines in most shelters are a joke... they work against you...... I wish them the best.. I appreciate the honesty about struggling with addiction...
