The good thing for people sad about it being in black aluminum is that Kaweco said they will release different colors and materials. Gold nibs are available as a nib unit. Right now you would need your pull the nib out of a 060 unit to put into the new 090 unit this uses but I believe that will be available by itself in the future. The nib is the same. The feed and collar are just shorter.

Thank you, Alicia! Think I'll be getting one of these. Big Kaweco Sport fan - carry a brass Sport with me all of the time. At the moment I have an adapted cartridge in it to maximise the ink capacity. Got a converter for the pen, chopped the top off and put on a clear latex bladder to extend its length. The nipple at the end of the converter is made from hard plastic and is reinforced with metal, so it should last. I fill it with a syringe. I have an EF nib, so it lasts a long time.

I bought one in broad. It’s such a great little pen. The blind cap actually gives me confidence in throwing this in my backpack or my pocket. I always had a worry with regular piston fillers that the knob might get turned either when I post it (and with my hands I have to post the Sport to use it comfortably) or when jostled in my bag or pocket.

Great feedback on the pen! I read or saw someone mention the thought for the blind cap might be since it is a pocket pen the cap protects the piston knob from getting turned accidentally in the pocket.

Very thoughtful review, Alicia. I have the brass, the terrazzo art model and, now, the mat-finish piston fill. This is the Goldilocks model, for me: The brass was heavy; the terrazzo felt like a Happy Meal toy, but this lands squarely in the sweet spot. I like the understated flat black finish, piston-fill, the ink window and integral clip. For me, Kaweco has designed the perfect grab-n-go travel pen; suitable even for impromptu business meetings.
I was always surprised the brass version was sold with a white-metal, steel nib, so -- years ago -- I swapped the steel for a Kaweco gold nib. Today, I stole the gold nib from the brass sport, and I put that 14k fine nib on the new black piston-fill, and -- you're exactly right -- it's just about the perfect pen.

Got one. Love the smoothness of writing and the fidget-worthy design. Only criticism is that the blind cap covering the piston sometimes gets stuck in the pen cap when posted, probably due to twisting the posted cap to orient the clip properly.

    Thank you for that Video.
I had ordered it the very first Day they sold it over here in Europe (March 28th, 2024), but haven't inked it up until now. I'm as glad as you, that Kaweco made it true to bring up a new Sport Piston Filler. I'm a bit disappointed it is black, which may well be classic, but none the less is boring, especially as black mat. I' know, it's modern, but if a classic design choice, it would have had to be shiny.
Ink capacity: Kaweco says, that it should hold as much ink as a standard cartridge. Thats not bad, then.
I am a little bit disappointed about the blind cap on the back end. But, rethinking about it, I come to the end that it makes sense by making Posting more secure and also when carrying it in a pocket (as should be doable with a pocket pen), its made sure that the piston isn't moving acidentally. And: very glad the pen is mostly aluminum. Because it costs quite some money, and therefore is good to be made nicely and robust. Also apreciate the built in clip, but I don't feel that the clipless models should be abandonned. They are nice too.
Some other colours would be nice too. But there is always a first one, and thus black is the natural choice.
Thanks for presenting, and have fun with it. By the next ink change I will too.

Got mine a few days ago. It's a great choice for a shallow shirt pocket.
Ink capacity is fine and my medium nib is really nice. I think I may get a fine nib unit for it. The nib unit unscrews from the section. I don't think it's interchangeable with the cartridge versions of the Sport.

    Thank you for the review!
I would suspect they chose to do a blindcap because some/most(?) people post the cap of their Kaweco Sport, and that could get very messy, fast.
I saw in a different review that the blindcap actually can get stuck in the cap when you turn it while you un-post it (but apparently you can return the blindcap in the same way), so that is something to look out for.
I am still on the fence with this one.
I like it, but I don't love it.
I always wanted a Kaweco piston filler, but I am a little underwhelmed by this one. I also don't like the sound the aluminum cap makes while unscrewing, but that is of course very personal.
I would have liked to have seen the piston filler in their plastic colours, primarily the dark green (I have a fondness of green fountain pens), and with a slightly lesser price point, which I think would match their nib quality better.
I agree with you that the art version body would be gorgeous!
Maybe they will listen to your suggestions!
I am currently saving for a Sailor Pro Gear. I have one of their steel nib pens, and honestly it is one of my favourite steels nibs (I prefer it over my Kaweco steel nibs), so now I am extra curious about their gold nibs (I bought one before, but never received it.. long story. It's been years, but I am still salty about it 😂)
I love that there is so much variety out there. So many people, so many preferences, so many pens!
Glad to see you enjoyed the pen!
My curiosity is peaked, and I hope Kaweco will branch out a bit more with the piston filler!
    Oh, I nearly forgot!
What do you think about the ink capacity? I wonder how much it can hold...?

I'm going to wait for the acrylic or plastic version of the Kaweco Sport Piston-Filler. The perfect Sport would have a slip-cap instead of screw-off,just my preference. I doubt that will happen.

Thanks for the review! I definitely plan on buying one. I've been waiting for a new Kaweco piston filler for so long. Does it feel the same in size to the brass or bronze sport? I bought the Art Sport in Pebble Blue this month, and while it's beautiful, I was slightly disappointed because it feels just a hair smaller to me than the metal sports. But I'm hoping since the piston filler is aluminum, that it will feel the same, size-wise.

I watched a webcast (Appelboom pennen...?) with Michael Gutberlet, and he said that the barrel can store the same amount as a cartridge and that Kaweco plans to have more colors in the piston filler model... the blind cap will help it not leak by it turning in your pocket or when you have the cap posted for writing... The cap does fit rather tight when posted on mine...

Fountain pens fascinate me since I was a kid. And then, for many years, I had some of them and the fingers always "painted" with FP inks. Then I lost all of them. In 80s I returned to them and was able to purchase what the luxury market offered. During one of my visits to London, I bought a Kaweco that still sported a paper price tag from a German pen shop... well. today I collect with no criteria at all, from Rangas (my preferred not so expensive pens) to Montblancs and Italian limited edition to marvelous Custom Robin pens. How do I proceed? From time to time I get nauseated and reject a great quantity of them and sell those for whatever; another way to cope with my endless, and juvenile, craze is to convince (blahh) myself that I seriously experiment with inks, pens, nibs, and papers... Now, what I really wanted to say to you is that: 1. I enjoy your channel the most: and 2. I am also a musician. Please, post more and more of your adventures (camping, moving, etc.). Thank you your many many videos!

This new Kaweco fountain pen with piston mechanism is a charming and coherent continuation of the Sport series. The design is an absolute success, but it has one flaw that surprises me.
The dimensions of the new Kaweco are identical to those of the regular Sport model, with one exception: the section goes deeper into the cap. On the regular Sport model, it measures 3.7 cm, while on the Sport Piston, it measures 4.3 cm. For this reason, the fountain pen is 6 mm shorter.
This inexplicable fact reduces writing comfort, giving the strange impression that something is wrong.
    That's very unfortunate...

I am astounded that this extra fine steel nib is so "juicy" -- I dislike dry nibs so I usually use a broad and rarely even buy anything less than a medium. I love this ink window, integrated clip and piston filler. Q: if you post the cap and "play" with it (spin it) do you risk unscrewing the blind cap and getting it stuck inside the pen's cap?
Great review. I do NOT need another pen, but this one tempts me. ps: I, too, like the little bit of extra springiness in gold nibs but a high performance steel nib is quite adequate.
Well done, says I -- boo, hiss says my wallet! We will debate this issue in private and, quite possibly, arm wrestle over it too! Aargh...

I get the impression that they don't want to invest $$$ in gold nib production. I think they are happy at the status quo of their spot in the pen universe.
