Kaweco pens are certainly pleasing to use and carry. And for the folks who collect fountain pens, this is likely on the ‘must have’ list. But if one is not obsessive about one’s pen collection, the price of this Kaweco pen would cause me to look at other makes before parting with my $$$. It ain’t cheap. For instance, the Pilot Elite/95s is hard to overlook. IMHO, the Pilot model is easily more luxurious in appearance than is this Kaweco. It is a joy to hold, cap and uncap. And as you have pointed out in your review, the Elite/95s writes like a dream. It’s also available in 3 ( I think?) colours and it’s considerably less expensive. Again……just my perspective. Having offered all that, this new Kaweco is not hard to admire. Great review, as always.
Worth noting that you can totally eyedropper the regular sport. The thread section, and the unthreaded extension that goes into the barrel is long enough that you can seal it with something like vasiline. I carried one for a while like that and never had a leak.
Yeah, I've eyedroppered both my plastic Kaweco Sports; I only have to be careful of leaks when they get low on ink (something about the air pressure and temperature change where they're held, I think), so just opening it up and refilling it with the same ink before it gets dangerously low has been my strategy.
@YR7A Just a suggestion, but silicone grease will not damage a rubber o-ring (if installed in the pen), while petroleum jelly causes deterioration to rubber. The tiny containers or tubes of silicone grease last forever for the small amount required to use on threads or o-rings.😎
I’ve had mine for a couple of weeks and am really enjoying it. Immediately thought the matte finish felt lovely in the hand and the black and gold is very attractive. I have a medium nib and it’s super smooth and very juicy, which I like. Filling was fun and capacity suits me; I love Kawecos in general so there were not really any surprises with this pen. I love the round tin and while I didn’t need yet another Sport, I couldn’t resist and temptation got the better of me. I don’t regret it.
I have one Kaweco Sport already. I never felt the need to buy a second one, let alone start a collection of them. It's a neat little pen, with the emphasis on the "little". As for the piston version, again, it's a nice little pen but not cheap. I would save that money to invest in a larger pen. But, that's what makes the fountain pen hobby great; to each their own.
Thanks for the Video. Really happy to see Kaweco makes the piston version. (although I still like the old version more). Just a small tip about using paperclip to apply silicon grease, file the end of the paper clip first if possible, because that end may be sharp and risk scratching the inside wall is not a fun thing.
I would also like to note here that there is also an inset o-ring in the pen body down at the end of where the nib/feed housing screws in. A sharp paperclip could damage it, and a cotton swab can definitely pull it out, which is how I found out that there is an o-ring down there. There is probably a gland down there that the o-ring fits into that it is difficult to set it back into; I suppose they use a tool at the factory to seat it in there. I got mine back in close enough, but not quite as the nib/feed housing now has enough friction in the pen body that I can't unscrew it using the nib and feed; no worries since I have no problem aligning friction fit nibs. The pen doesn't leak and inkflow hasn't been effected, so all is good but it is something to be aware of if you are impatient and don't like your inks to be watered down at all after filling (which I am guilty of).
@@NikeaTiber I normally cut one of the cottom swab head off and use this end to deliver the grease inside, since the q-tip swab I got from the store have recycled paper stab, it will not damage anything, and it is thin enough for this job. best regards
I usually use a rounded-end wooden toothpick (not the sharp, pointy kind) to get silicone grease into a barrel. It works well and seems less likely to scratch.
It’s great to see them bring this back after about 50 years! I do feel like it was a miss to not be able to disassemble the piston, but maybe there will be fewer warranty issues from people messing with the mechanism. Regarding ink capacity - seems appropriate and about the same as the Pelikan M200/400. I’m looking forward to Kaweco releasing demonstrator and brass versions.
I would find a way to lose the blind cap. But I avoid pistons, so I am not in the target audience. Though I have a nice Stainless Steel Sport, I prefer the Special, which isn't so tiny. Love those BB nibs.
Nice review. I just bought one - my very first Kaweco Sport. I like it! The nib is great right out of the box...and how many times can you say that these days? Yes, ink supply is limited, so if you're going to travel with it, make sure you filled it up first. Kaweco has a hit on their hands for sure.
This is a cool looking pen, I've seen other reviews and at least one has commented about the blind cap coming off in the cap. Yours is the first to suggest that it might be deliberate so one doesn't lose the blind cap. My Kaweco Sport in Mellow Blue was about my 12th fountain pen and my first impressions weren't positive. The plastic felt cheap and the fit of the cap when capped was "loose", you can wiggle it when tightened. However after some use I found the pen is a joy to write with and is very nice. If someone is looking for a good small pocket pen on a budget, they're probably your best bet.
My first kaweco sport is the exact same goldspot purple. Stainless one is in the mail. Maroon was supposed to be next but may end up being a piston filler instead! Love your vids!
I'm the same as you; it's just too thin, piston or not. It doesn't help that the grip is concave and the cap is quite wide in relation to the body as well, which makes the pen tilt forward in your hand a bit. To me that's always made it feel as if the pen is trying to slide out of my hand instead of just sitting in the crook of my thumb under its own mass.
Definitely got one on order since it’s a very unique piston filler pocket pen. I’ve used a variety of nibs on these from the calligraphy set. Good to see Kaweco thinking of new ways to maintain interest in snappy pens
The blind cap confused me at first as I thought it was a fault as you say. Writing is very smooth with Lamy Crystal Obsidian. My Pilot VP is getting jealous. Two different pens that I like very much. Two is enough.
Initially I thought the blind cap was a weird choice for Kaweco. But after giving it some thought, I figured it might be a safeguard against accidental loosening/turning of the piston knob if the pen is kicked around in your pockets or purse.
Hi Doodle Bud it’s a lovely pen, but sadly unable to justify it at the moment but I want it!! I’ve become a big fan of the Kaweco Sport in general although I don’t like the “push pin” converter and am starting to use ink cartridges which i quite like. A good range of nibs I think including the EB for this model. Thank you for a great and informative video 😊
Hi DB! That is one pretty slick pen! For sure will be on a list for me in the future! Will probably wait until the furor dies down from the initial release to get one. The cap helping retain the blind cap is a pretty cool circumstance! Perhaps they will release these in some interesting colors. Not that there is anything wrong with the black.
I love mine. It arrived at the end of last week. It has become a definite EDC. I didn't realize about the blind cap "feature" but I do think it's a feature instead of an oops. Thanks for a great reciew!. :)
Very nice review. I like blind converters. You can push up the ink as you use the pen to get rid of the air in the reservoir. Esp useful before you take on airplanes.
Great observation about removing the blind cap with the cap itself. I think I'll start doing that. In practice, I've found it helpful to un-post the pen with a tiny bit of clockwise torque. Not enough to actually turn anything, just enough to make sure there is no counterclockwise motion. Otherwise, the blind cap can end up loosened. Mine is medium and a very dependable glass-smooth writer. The piston sport is what I would call a philosophically perfect pen for shallow shirt pockets. Three AI generated thumbs up complete with multiple backward knuckles. It's that nice.
Nice review DB, I like how you pointed out certain factors with this pen. For me, there seems to be too much hype surrounding this initial release of a piston designed AL sport. Sure, it's a nice looking pen & there would be no more fooling around with cartridges or that joke of a converter. For now I have the Bronze, Ebonite, AL Ruby, and the Toyama Teal that I eyedroppered and swapped in a 1.1 mm stub. That's enough for now. As for other pens, I now have the Majohn C4 (a fantastic writer), and in the pipeline the Eureka Dodecagon in PEEK & a Lotus Wave.
I know everyone in our hobby has different tastes, and we're willing to pay what we consider somethings worth, but I do think the new Kaweco is way over priced. It's only got a steel nib. I bought a Sailor PG Imperial Black from Japan that was only $2 more. And that's got a 21k nib!
Agree, way too expensive (and I have a few Sports, so I do like them). I had been looking forward to the return of a piston version, but way overpriced IMO.
Surprised you didn’t mention the threading of the blind cap. When you tighten the blind cap it also tightens the pen cap - I like that as it means when I tighten the cap on I can’t accidentally loosen the blind cap
Mango Chutney! Looks like a fantastic upgrade - I'll wait for a non-"gold" trim version (or brass!!!). You going to look at the Gravitas new piston design? Got a copper Entry and a SS Pocket after your reviews, and I keep hovering on the "Buy Now" button for the Ultem piston. It has to be perfect for flying.
I got a Kaweco brass Spirt and that will be the most I ever spend on a Kaweco. They are nice pens. But I would rather spend $140 dollars on a Pilot e95s than $165 on a Kaweco Sport piston filler. Now…. If they made them out of plastic….. At a better price. I might consider one.
Thank you, Doodlebud, for the well done review! Oh, how I wish I could get one, but retirement funds probably won’t allow it. At least I can cheer for those who can! Losing the blind cap would be my worry. Thank you again for the review! 👍👋👋
Re: blind cap in the cap Maybe intentional, maybe not. Either way, if anyone is worried about the blind cap getting stuck in the pen cap the finial of the pen cap unscrews and the rest of the pen cap is a hollow tube, so you can push the blind cap back out if you manage to get it stuck in there somehow. Not sure if one of us got a fluke, but there is no cap liner inside my modern piston sport. If you are going to grease the piston with a sharpish object be careful as there is an o-ring that is down at the bottom of the nib/feed housing that you probably don't want to damage, or inadvertently remove with a cotton swab. Overall, it is a great little pen. I have really been enjoying mine. Definitely has more ink capacity than the vintage piston fill sports. Got mine with a double broad and it writes excellently. I probably still like my v16 a little bit more, but it has got a 14k stub and I'm a sucker for stub nibs. I hope they release one in stainless steel in the future, would alleviate any trepidation about inadvertent damage from my work environment. Just out of curiosity, when you weighed the pen dry/filled to determine capacity, did you purge the air out of the pen to get full capacity? I noticed that when I put the pen tip up 1/4th to 1/3rd the reservoir is air on a single- draw fill.
Hey Doodlebud, I love the video's but see you haven't taken a look at the Picasso 902 yet, I'm thinking of buying it but would love to see a review on it!
It looks like they had trouble designing a regular piston knob that wouldn't turn the piston when posted. So they added the blind cap as a compromise. Kaweco Sport is a bit too small for me even as a pocket pen, but this piston version seems well-designed to me.
Considering the size of the pen, the ink capacity is decent. I have the original version and it is just too thin for my grip. I was hoping for a wider pen but it is not to be. Decent weight, though.
I've always wanted a Sport in Brass or Bronze, but my hands are just too big for it to be comfortable. I settled on a Brass Supra. I love my Supra though. Bigger nib and still got Brass.
Is the inside a plastic sleeve all the way down inserted into the outer aluminum shell? That seems like the most likely way to build it because you don't want ink to contact the aluminum. I'm tossed on whether to buy this now and show my support for this lovely new design or to wait to see if they come out with a raw aluminum version with black trim in a year or so which would be my preferred color option. I was pretty close to ordering a raw aluminum sport before this one came out.
I understand that this is a “new” model… However this pen is GROSSLY overpriced. It’s still a cheap Kaweco nib. With sports being around $20, MOST this should be is $50 on a good day. I’m not paying an extra $100 to be first. I’ll just keep syringe filling used cartridges. This one is a big miss for me. Cool idea that priced itself out.
I've never cared much for Kaweco Sports, but I do love piston fillers... is this gonna be the pen that finally gets me into Kaweco?? I kind of wish it didn't have a built in clip tho, just for more options of customization
1 ml is not bad but it's not that much either for a piston pen, I had heard that the capacity was basically the same as a regular sport but apparently that was false, still I wouldn't pay this much for it, Kaweco sports are good pens but not 150 euro good, even with a piston mechanism.
@@levon9 Yeah, I read that Kaweco wants to upgrade all the other models to the piston mechanism, not a bad idea but they will have to set a reasonable price if they wish to turn it into a success, I'm not forking out 50 euros when I can get a twsbi eco for less.
Sport is my daily go to, I have a couple of different pens. But at this price I can keep it on hand all the time it looks great and writes great. Mind you my hands are smaller then DB. XD😅
Interesting. The Kaweco Sport was nearly my first FP purchase too, and I’ve always liked it. I hadn’t heard about this model coming. I see the clip is integral to this pen rather than an add-on like the Sports I’ve seen. Have Kaweco done this with other Sports?
Thanks for the great review and demo. It’s a tempting pen. But the price…. Is it really worth € 175? You can have nearly 5 plastic ones for that. Or 2 aluminium or steel ones. So it’s stays tempting, but nothing more.
So I have this pen and well my thoughts, you changed. So when I got it inked it up pulled off that back cap and it flew all over, swore I was going to loose it, was thinking that was a bad design, then I thought why would they twist off that cap when I had it posted and twisted. Which honestly how many times to I twist a posted cap. The you sit here really quickly and show me well maybe this is supposed to be this way so Yes the little cap doesn't fly all over. A I smacked myself in the forehead and went well yeah that's exactly what yours supposed to do. So now all my complains are gone and yeah that's a feature. Guess I wish they would have said that. However now it makes so much more sense.
Honestly I wish they made a Kaweco Sport XL too. Something that took a full size converter and has a wider body. I have small hands but they're messed up from skateboarding in my youth and I'm professional keyboardist and piano teacher. Small pens are uncomfortable. Even my Jinhao 82 maxes out at about 5 minutes of writing time haha. I also feel like their aluminum Sports are overpriced 🤷🏻♂️ But hey it'll sell haha. I'll probably still get a standard Sport. Good review though!
Yup it does. I even took the top cap off to remove the clip and took the cap liner out to have a look. Short black one with a thin oring. If yours doesn't reach out to the retailer you bought it from. Must have been missed during assembly. Have a look though as it's tough to see since it's short & black so blends in with the black anodized cap.
@@Doodlebud Oh ok maybe I'm just not seeing it. The inner liner on other Sports I've seen are closed at the top but when I take the finial holding the clip off it's totally open at the top. Is yours the same?
@@Doodlebud Ah ok sweet! Thanks so much for the info man, I seriously appreciate it! I was starting to wonder if I was going to need to take this back to my retailer.

My pocketbook may mourn the fact that I am a bit of a kaweco-phile. I've got my fingers crossed that they will release a run of them in stainless steel.
Plated steel. Mine writes excellently. TBH a 14k #5 might not really be much of an improvement. The kawecos I've bought in the last two years have all had excellent steel nibs right out of the box.
I dont like these type of pens because most of the time if something breaks the whole pen is garbage. Either from the company not making the part or the part not being able to be fixed at all. It being kaweco maybe they make parts but I'll trust a small converter with some backups vs a "refillable body" pen, and take the ink capacity loss. I use the EF nib on my sport and it holds enough ink for leaving it on my desk and using it whenever. I wanted to edc it but 1 drop on the end and the cap wouldnt post, I had to sand it down so it would fit again. Ill stick to my TT ballpoint for edc and kaweco for the desk.
Another very interesting reviwe. Thanks. I would like to mention something which could be of help. The OO in Joost and Appelboom is pronounced like the OO in the English word brooch. Of course your channel is watched for your informed reviews and not your pronounciation.
I had a bad experience early in my fountain pen fun with a perkeo. But this looks like maybe a good place to jump back into kaweco Off topic but I thought of something that might be right up your alley. I recently picked up a TWSBI vac 700 and the vac20 inkwell for it. It’s a really slick way to get a full fill. I would love to use it with my 823 as well but it looks like nobody makes any sort of converter for it. I know nothing about 3D printing so not sure if it’s a tough project. But after googling a bit I bet if someone did start offering a cap for the vac20 that was threaded for the 823 it would sell like hot cakes. Is 3D printing a threaded fitting like that difficult?
I agree with others that the price is too high. I'm sure hardcore Kaweco fans would find it worth it, but it's not for me. I prefer the plastic Sports anyway. I know some people find them cheap, but the sound of aluminum on aluminum when capping and uncapping aluminum pens is unpleasant to me. I like the way anodized aluminum feels to the touch but hate that metallic sound. (I have no problem with Schon Dsgn aluminum pens, but they don't make that sound because of how they open and post.)
170€ for an aluminum Kaweco Sport because it has a piston ? I think this is outrageous..... this is a big no for me.... Kaweco original 250 is also aluminum, has a decent size, takes standard international converter or a long cartridge, has a #6 nib and maintains the Kaweco style at a reasonable price.
I hear alot of CRAP about KAWECO Company , having pen battles with chinese pen company , Moonman { aka Majohn } I bought 4 of these Kaweco....great writer, yet their failure lies in the Cartridge....still waiting for a pen company to make a Dropper style Mini pen in Clear [demonstrator] body.
I feel confident they'll come out with more colors are some point. Would be so odd if they come out with a piston sport after all this time and only every do this one color option.
why would anyone pay the current price for this pen ? only a kaweco fan. for a lot less money one could buy a pelikan 200 with nib options in steel ana gold. i know there are even other brands for similiar money. why did you fail to mention in your glowing Appleboon review?
@@irvintepper5 Pros and cons for that too, it would greatly limit the types of pens that can be reviewed since most reviewers wouldn't be able to review expensive "grail" pens which would it make difficult to determine their value for those considering spending money. On the other hand, the price/value thing definitely needs to be mentioned - and not everyone does it. Doodlebud usually mentions the price, so it was a bit unusual not to hear it this time around. I think the Sports are overpriced to start out with (I own 3 plastic, two AL), but this one's definitely out of consideration due to price. I'd be happy to use it if given one, but for that money I'd consider other pens.
Nice pen, but it's 6-7x more expensive than the regular one where I live. Not sure if that is normal or not haha Edit: when compared to the AL version it is actually only about 2.5x the price.
I still do not understand why they did not came out with this model years ago. Why making these types of pens is so blody expensive? It is just a stupid seringue which cost 2 dollars to produce in China. OK with improve materials to make it more durable how much will cost to put a syringe inside a pen? And they have been builing these things since the early 20th century, so there is virtually 0 R&D required.

Your now supposed to use vaseline because it can dissolve certain plastic over time, this is why they typically say silicon grease not petroleum
@@vegronica9006that makes sense; less ink = more air and air expands/contracts more than water/ink with temperature change.

Yes, absolutely overpriced. It's locked me out from even considering this one.
1:47 that’s styled like the Supra Deluxe clip (fancy) compared to the Sport clip which is the flat one. 👍
Same here. I wish its just a tad longer
We all wish for that 😉😆
Thanks DB. I really wish that Kaweco had put a nice gold nib on this pen. Instead of a standard off the shelf steel nib. That would be nice.
You can buy those nibs separately.
it looks so good...but i wish there were more color variants...
Im sure at some point there will be
Nice handwriting sir!
Thank you, Doodlebud, for the well done review! Oh, how I wish I could get one, but retirement funds probably won’t allow it. At least I can cheer for those who can! Losing the blind cap would be my worry. Thank you again for the review! 👍👋👋
Re: blind cap in the cap
Maybe intentional, maybe not.
Someone else did a review on that pen
ruclips.net/video/HzGdcZUK9zQ/видео.html
It looks like they had trouble designing a regular piston knob that wouldn't turn the piston when posted. So they added the blind cap as a compromise. Kaweco Sport is a bit too small for me even as a pocket pen, but this piston version seems well-designed to me.
Also, how is the blind cap access preferable to just screwing off the barrel?
Considering the size of the pen, the ink capacity is decent. I have the original version and it is just too thin for my grip. I was hoping for a wider pen but it is not to be. Decent weight, though.
Fun fact you can use the bottom of the pen as a stylus just discovered just now
Anyone know where to purchase replacement o rings for nib housing mentioned at 3:10? Mine unfortunately fell down the sink drain. Thanks!
I've always wanted a Sport in Brass or Bronze, but my hands are just too big for it to be comfortable. I settled on a Brass Supra. I love my Supra though. Bigger nib and still got Brass.
The Supra is an awesome pen.
Agreed .. way too expensive.
I decided against getting one immediately because : only available in boring black and I HATE that round tin! It’s a cute tin but WHY is it round? 🟠🟡
PS - and then I discovered the PRICE! 🤬
Agree, I have a few Sports, and really was looking forward to a return of the piston version, but this is way too expensive IMO.
If they make a rainbow anodized one of these, I might not be able to keep from buying one, even though I believe it doesn't come with a stub option.
Thanks for the great review and demo. It’s a tempting pen. But the price…. Is it really worth € 175?
You can have nearly 5 plastic ones for that. Or 2 aluminium or steel ones.
So it’s stays tempting, but nothing more.
Many many thanks for the video. Where it is available and what is the cost?
Very nice video. Thank you
Does the cap on regular AL spot fit on the piston sport? If so, that'd be a mighty fine frankenpen.
Didn't catch if you mentioned whether this pen is equipped with Kaweco's Premium nib. To confirm its intended status, it should be.
What nib was the one you got? I am trying to buy one with the “friend” code you provided but want the same nib as in your writing sample.
Mine was equipped with an EF nib
Cool review DB.
Can you do the chinese #6 caligraphy or some special grind nibs comparison? I dont know what nib to put in my asvine p20
Everything is good in the new Kaweco Sport Piston but the blind cap on the piston knob...
Pure pens is my localish pen shop, great video
You should make some nibs with jowo, laser engraved your logo and personally tested, if people were sure the nibs are working, those would sell easily
If not please make video about engraving something on the nibs and pens
I will be firing my laser back up soon
Did you visually confirm if there is a cap liner in your Piston Sport? Mine definitely does not have one.
@@knownaigm yup it's open at the top. It's not the same cap liner as in the other sports
@@Doodlebud Ah ok sweet! Thanks so much for the info man, I seriously appreciate it! I was starting to wonder if I was going to need to take this back to my retailer.
As always, your videos are spot on for useful information! And I love reading the comments people leave. However…the music you played when you did the writing sample 🫦🥰💃🏽 🤤💗 blew me away… I always L-O-V-E the segment when you write and this one…was wowza 😜 Just sexy!! Might be a silly comment but I think you do it on purpose 😜 👏🏽 Thank you 😊 👍🏽 Write ✍🏼 on!! Please !😊
This could completely depleat my 2024 pen budget!
fun fact, KAWECO is going to release a plastic piston sport this year
A demonstrator would be awesome
@@technoraptor7778 yes it would be
My pocketbook may mourn the fact that I am a bit of a kaweco-phile.
I've got my fingers crossed that they will release a run of them in stainless steel.
Does it have a gold nib? Or is it plated?
But this looks like maybe a good place to jump back into kaweco
Off topic but I thought of something that might be right up your alley.
And for the Asvine Vs
I agree with others that the price is too high. I'm sure hardcore Kaweco fans would find it worth it, but it's not for me. I prefer the plastic Sports anyway. I know some people find them cheap, but the sound of aluminum on aluminum when capping and uncapping aluminum pens is unpleasant to me. I like the way anodized aluminum feels to the touch but hate that metallic sound. (I have no problem with Schon Dsgn aluminum pens, but they don't make that sound because of how they open and post.)
It's not a bug, its a feature!
I'm probably going to pick one up eventually. Sports are collectibles lol
I wish they make a large oversize kaweco sports with no 6/8 nib, pen is way too small
It's a bit steep pricewise for what it is. Looking forward to the Chinese copy that will soon surpass it lol.
I hear alot of CRAP about KAWECO Company , having pen battles with chinese pen company , Moonman { aka Majohn }
I bought 4 of these Kaweco....great writer, yet their failure lies in the Cartridge....still waiting for a pen company to make a Dropper style Mini pen in Clear [demonstrator] body.
Have you looked at the Opus88 mini?
For some reason, it looks like the Visconti design
I wonder what kaweco did between 1936 to 1945....
Hmmmmm......
1:16
Too bad it comes in gold tone. Full black or even silver two-tone would've been nice
Yes, I noticed the price wasn't mentioned. Too expensive for this pen. I like sports, have a few, but this is way overpriced for me.
@@levon9 I wish these reviewers would actually buy the pen they review
Not sure if that is normal or not haha
Edit: when compared to the AL version it is actually only about 2.5x the price.
It's a blind blind cap! 😅
My goodness this pen is overpriced!
Kaweco Sport = $20
Kaweco Sport Piston Filler = $150
It's 150$... when I could just get an eco or yknow, eyedropper the regular sport.
I’m afraid the price missed the mark…
Dooooooodlebud!
If that wasn't an intended feature, it sure is a great accidental one for clumsy people like me who would probably misplace it.
Muy cara!!! Very expensive!!!!
These pens look so tiny in your hands. 😂
Too damn expensive
It is overpriced. And the colour! Decided to have one. But eventually dropped the idea to have one, though I am a Sport fan!
