- Go back in time 65 million years, or to the mid 90`s to see how Animal Kingdoms opening E Tickets developed and how the indoor EMV attraction came from an outdoor family ride. After a full concepts and construction section, learn the story to the ride with a lot of story and ride details often missed by guests. Then it`s on to a time travel trip circa 1998 for a recreation of the original Countdown to Extinction, with multi camera video including long missing visual effects and the original audio narration that was changed at park opening. See the changes made over the years, then take a modern day trip on Dinosuar including a look at the Rotunda show, full preshow with ALD audio, a look around the research facility and finally a full ride with multi camera video and an induction / clean live audio track. 33 minutes.

This has to be my favorite ride at Disney World. It was what kept me and my family coming back
Thanks for this Tribute video! Since I've only experienced it as Dinosaur, I didn't realize just how much they neutered the ride from what it originally started out as. So much more exciting as Count Down To Extinction!! (also, a MUCH better name). Disney has an annoying way of taking a great attraction and ruining it to make little kids more comfortable. Although, It is still on the intense side of a Disney ride, it could really use some of the original effects reinstalled, especially in the beginning during the actual 'time travel' scene and the more realistic/threatening animal movements.

Woah the comsognathus effects were much more realistic. And I about shat myself when it was the meteor instead of the Carnotaurus at the end.
keithwellerlounge74 I remember going to this ride as a kid when it was still called countdown to extinction. At the time though, they had already replaced the physical Asteroid with the Carnotaurus head. I remember talking about it with my friends and lamenting the fact that The ride never showed the meteor impact. My friends were confused and told me that it was right at the end I had to do was look up. And I was confused by this as they said I couldn’t have missed it. turns out they remembered the original ride while I rode the newer version which they hadn’t. :(

@@pgcroonerva3256 The Attraction never actually opened with the Meteor. Martin edited it in as a demonstration of what it could've looked like. Even at soft opening it didnt have the Meteor

I went during a very early preview (workers) and there was this awe
some - but terrifying effect - where it looked like the meteor hit and a chunk flew right at the car. I had ro re-ride ro see how it was done - a projection on smoke blown at the car. Probably too realistic. It was gone by opening day.
@George Floyd Right before the car makes it turn past the first diorama (the one dino eating smaller one) a asteroid piece (lighting effect - still there) and it gave the appearance hat is blew off a chunk of rock aimed right ay you. Scared the heck out of everyone.

I remember going on tjis ride the year the park opened it was fantastic. The entrance-with the triceratops statue was originally a fountain but little people used it as a paddling pool so I guess thats why it became surrounded by plants

Wow, that meteor effect at the end was pretty convincing. I went on this ride recently for the first time and I thought it was lame. Guess it was because it was severely neutered from the original version of the attraction.
This ride is so fast and intense, the subtle changes made have flown over my head. Thanks for pointing them out.

If they could put one thing back in I wish it was the carnotaurus chase sounds. It's much better with the sound of it right behind you. But I guess hearing it fade into the distance isn't too bad as it gives a feeling of the Dino still being out there and not knowing where it is.

They added the original chase sounds back I think. The ride also features a much more intense profile again.
The refurbishment finished last year is fantastic! If they could put the time tunnel effects to original levels and put the name/ marquee back it would be perfect!
If the second video we watch is the newer version (never been to Disney World) then I actually prefer that version's dialog. It's more frantic, like the scientist is terrified you're going to be stranded and/or eaten.
I do prefer that version of the dialogue as well. The ride got a refurb in late 2016 and is significantly better now. The dialogue is the same, but many of the effects taken out were put back in, or done so in a way to mimic the original (for example, instead of the practical effect of the Compsognathus running over your vehicle, there's a projection showing them doing the same thing and it looks much better). The new lighting effects and some additional sound effects have made it even more chaotic.
It's a terrifying ride that no video can do justice for. But that's what also makes it excellent. In a family friendly park, it's nice to have a ride like this that isn't afraid to go all out.
Thank you Martin for doing a tribute to my favorite ride at Disney's animal kingdom. I love the ride dinosaur and I love walking around dinoland USA.

Hey they just fixed up the ride this month! The pterodactyl is lit up again and the little jumping ones are now represented not by lit animatronics but by an led screen showing them moving across a log above the riders' heads!
You forgot to mention how some animatronics were seemingly moved back further from the vehicle.
This is how I remembered it in 2001 and 2002 when I was a scaredy cat! I wish I rode it again in 2008 but at least I just rode in June 2018 n its less scary than before!
9:33 - Hey, I think I just see something. The ride, Dinosaur, was actually sponsored by McDonald's. Yeah, McDonald's, the fast food company. So, right off the bat, the ride usually sells out with a product placement. In the words of Garth from Wayne's World, "It's like people only do things because they get paid. And that's just really sad." You know, I'm surprised. Should Coca-Cola and M&M's be cosponsors of Dinosaur the ride and the movie along with McDonald's? Wouldn't that be awesome for Disney?
Ohhhh it's a reconstruction ... I saw this video years ago embedded somewhere and was trying to find the asteroid footage at the end again because I remember it looking very strange compared to the rest of the video, I had no idea it was digitally added for the video. Ah well!

Now you can actually! In the most recent refurbishment of this, Disney added some projection screens that have footage of compsognathus running over the rover.
@@disneylandguy10 too bad they couldn't show the asteroid though, you still get that light trail in the tree line above your head that you assume is the asteroid. I would have preferred the original ending where instead of the Carnotaurus head it was the asteroid billowing down on you.

I dont understand how the meteor effect worked. Did it swing down from the celing? Did it shoot out like the carnotaurus head?
If I remember right it was on a track. you ended up dipping right below it at the last second. I miss the old effects

I know this is an old post but I feel like there is a lot of misconception about the meteor at the end. I rode this ride multiple times during its first few months of operation and during that time the meteor was never a physical prop. It was always a lighting effect overhead and in the background of the scene that made it appear as if the meteor was crashing down ahead of the vehicle. The bright flash of light is supposed to be the impact in the near distance which then illuminates the carnotaur in front of the vehicle. It was more prominent in CTX, but still present up until the 2016 refurbishment. In the current version there is little to indicate that the overhead light is the meteor because the primary focus is on the carnotaur. It was always a very subtle effect and for that reason I think the online community over the years has perpetuated the misconception that it was a removed effect, but nothing physical was ever changed, at least subsequent to opening to the public.
@@1983horizons1 The light effect is still there, and it actually looks better than ever. It’s a large orange glow coming down from behind the trees behind the Carnotaurus.
I'd still prefer the countdown version of the ride with all of the effects

Good news. They refurbished the ride recently. And almost all the old effects are back ( minus the asteroid) the strobe and fog are back on. The chase sound effects are back. The compsagnathus were replaced with realistic projections and the whole thing was given a fresh coat of paint.
Yee McGee yeah it looks great. Though the astroid affect in the end is weaker than the old one, and by old one, I don’t mean the original one. The astroid impact as of 2000 post the change to Dinosaur is essentially a giant streak of light in the sky just before the Carnotaurus head appears. Before it used to wiz past your head in the sky above the tree line and explode behind you lighting up the dinosaur for the final scare. Now it will streak in front of you above the tree line, but for some reason the lighting doesn’t look as prominent so you can’t tell. The explosion from the impact happens behind the dinosaur which also lights it up.
I would’ve loved to see the original physical asteroid effect even if it is scientifically inaccurate. The astroid that destroyed the dinosaurs landed in the ocean somewhere off of Mexico so we never really made landfall the way that it was represented in the ride originally.
Even so, when it hit the ocean it evaporated the water around it and still hit the land underneath creating a massive explosion and kicking up ejecta clouds which were really hot all over the world. North America was essentially roasted.
Fun fact: the crater from that ancient impact still exists today, it’s simply underwater and some of modern day Mexico. A continent shifted somewhat over the crater but it’s still there underground in caverns and under ocean.
Is there any consideration for how Kingdom of the Dinosaurs influenced this ride? Was that a thing? Kinda wish that'd been featured in this just out of principle. ;) Also I can't help but wonder.. Jurassic Park ride opened in mid 1996 probably a peak development period figuring out what they're doing for Animal Kingdom.

The Dino ride is full of fast motion on time rover. Learning to save an iguanadon cool dinos but lots of carnotaur drama!! If any of you see that carnotaurus that is a part that starts to become dramatic!!!

The scientist guy was much more of a jerk in Countdown to Extinction than he was in Dinosaur. He kind of reminds me of Xiro from the animated Noah's Ark movie.

they wanted to attract more kids to the ride because of the movie (which I saw and was not very good) but now they really need to reactivate those

Actually a bunch of the effects were unstable and had no failsafe when they were designed (which is why they became stationary) but now *2018 they've brought back a bunch of the old effects by using screens (like the jumping dinosaurs) and I seem to remember problems with the pyrotechnics in the time travel sequence.... But I totally agree it needs renovation especially since pandora is there now so they have other E ticket attractions to fall back on.

I know "Countdown to Extinction" was a waaaaay better name. I remember how pissed I was when they renamed it after that weak movie. If they had to rename it after that movie why didn't they just name it "Dinosaur: Countdown to Extinction"

It would be cool if there were people who specialized in virtual reality simulations who could re-create these old rides as they used to look or even rides that are now closed down forever. Imagine putting on a VR headset in your living room and reliving these old rides.
