    In addition to keeping a bag of bones, I keep a bag of all my veggie scraps - carrot peels, bottom of celery, onion peels, garlic peels, I even include sweet pepper stems and beet peels - really whatever scraps I have leftover. I pop everything in the instant pot for broth and stock. It's the best tasting stock ever and is completely free.

      Nice! I usually start stocking up on veggie scraps just before I make another batch of bone broth. I might start doing more veggie stock though!

    I keep a running inventory on my freezer door with magnets. I made the chart on the computer. When I print it, I have a program put in a small grid. The items are arranged in type of food order. When I put something in the freezer, I put the month and year in the grid with a diagonal line separating the month and year. When I take something out, I put another diagonal line the opposite way. This way it makes an X through that square. This makes it easy to use the oldest items first.

    Just a word about using mason jars in your freezer - it's safest to use wide mouth jars, even if you are allowing the lids to be a little free until fully frozen. Ball has even said that it's safer to use widemouth.

    Hi Christine from AZ. My husband and I love to eat anything that uses bones for flavor and nutrients. I always have bones in my freezer from roasts, chicken, turkeys and ham. I collect all the bones from our meats at big family dinners. It’s the big running joke that at the end of the meal that I take all scraps. My nana taught me her fugal tips from the depression era She said you will always have a meal in your freezer. Love your site

    When I put something in the freezer in a zip lock bag, I take a straw and seal the bag with the straw in one corner. Then I suck the air out. When all the air is out, I pull the straw out and finish sealing. Don’t be grossed out. I love my vacuum sealer, too.

    I've been going through your meal prep videos looking for some new recipes, I'm excited to try them out! I also take my meals from frozen to cooked in one fell swoop, however I use a HeatLogic Mini in my car to heat them. Being in sales, it's hard to get a healthy warm meal for lunch every day. I just pop the meal in the heater in the morning, and by lunch I'm ready to go! Thanks for posting all this information for the rest of us!

    I buy my meats from Berryman Brothers Meats on Van. Island. They are local and ethical. I particularly buy their sausage meat without the casings to scramble (it saves them from going to waste and they can use them for customers who want links).
    I love the idea of silicone freezer bags, but I find them tough to close (arthritis). I should try canning jars. I was using plastic bags for my soups (lay flat until frozen and then stack). They take no time to thaw and take very little room to store. :)

    Why is your freezer standing randomly in the middle of the room?

    • @SweetPeasSaffron
      @SweetPeasSaffron  5 лет назад +15

      Haha!! I should have panned the room; it's our garage and normally the freezer is right against the wall but we couldn't fit the camera in to get shots, so we moved the freezer out from the wall about 1 m.

    • @SweetPeasSaffron
      @SweetPeasSaffron  5 лет назад +5

      Hi Malisa! I have never had a glass container break in the freezer. I use pyrex bases, which are extremely durable, and also canning jars. You need to make sure you are using canning jars and not reusing something like a pasta jar, as it's not tempered and can shatter. I also thaw gently and never transfer anything directly to the oven. Hope this helps!

    I loved your idea about storing bone broth in the freezer for stocks and soups. I've mulled over this idea for a while now. I wanted to ask if after using frozen bones for broth, is it okay to freeze the broth later? I'm concerned about refreezing defrosted food.

      Hi Zainaba! I have had no issues, but I use durable containers that can withstand temperature shifts. Check the instructions/specifications that come with your containers if you are unsure.

    Even though I am a vegetarian, I have found your videos informative when it comes to freezer meal prep or the containers you store in. Is your freezer a self defrosting or frost free freezer? I am asking because my freezer is an manual defrosting upright one. While I do prefer glass and stainless steel over plastic, I am scared to use my freezer safe glass containers due to fear of them breaking. I hope i can get some guidance here.thanks in advance.

  • @SaroshSohail

    I admire how environmentally friendly all your freezer containers are! Question though, do you have trouble washing the silicone containers after you've frozen meat in them?

    • @SweetPeasSaffron
      @SweetPeasSaffron  5 лет назад

      Hi Sarosh! I wash the two different types slightly differently: both get soaked in soapy water and scrubbed with a brush. The stasher bags go on the top rack of the dishwasher as is but the other type you can put inside out which I love because that helps them get really clean! And it’s my understanding that food grade silicone is non-porous meaning that there aren’t nooks and crannies for bacteria to hide. If I’m wrong, someone please correct me!

    When you freeze food that contains tomato sauce in stash bags, don't they get stained? How do you clean them? I'm looking for ways to freeze my pizza sauce and thought about stash bags.

    • @SweetPeasSaffron

      Hi Silvia! I have frozen curry in one of the bags and it came perfectly clean, but some of the tomato-based recipes have left a slight dis-coloration. I wash them in soapy water, then on the top rack of the dishwasher, then prop them open to dry completely. Hope this helps!

    When I was looking into silicone freezer bags, someone mentioned them getting moldy-- has this ever been an issue for yours and how long have you been using them?

    • @SweetPeasSaffron
      @SweetPeasSaffron  4 года назад +2

      I've had the cheap-o version for 2 years and my stashers for 1 year. Allow them lots of time to dry and it won't be a problem. After going through the dishwasher, we prop them open with a kids sippy cup lid for 24 hours minimum and this always does the trick. But I do live in a dry climate.
