In this video I take an in depth look at the low light performance of the Canon EOS M50 Body along with 3 lens options; EF-M 22mm F2.0, 11-22mm, and the Viltros EF-EOS M2 speedbooster paired with the EF 50mm STM lens. Testing includes indoor and outdoor environment along with various light sources as well as AF performance throughout different ISO controlled settings.

This one might be the best comparsion ever.
Great video for anyone who's got an M50 and needs to make their first purchase past the Kit lens. Thanks!
The 22mm looked like the best all round image. Good comparison and testing 👍
Saved me a lot of time and money watching this. Already have my speed boosted 50mm. Just needed a wider low light lens. Gonna buy the 22mm. Good review.
Thanks for making this great video. If one already has a lot of EF lenses then it makes sense to use the speed booster otherwise using an adapter defeats the purpose of this camera being a small lightweight mirrorless camera. I would start with their 22mm F/2 then get the ef-m 32mm f1.4 and their 18-150mm these three lenses with an M50 are capable are creating professional photos and videos. The EF 50mm f1.8 without the speed booster is actually closer to 80-85mm which is great for portraits.
one of the greatest demonstration and comparison video!
This was the only video that shows what I need to know, have you ever tried 32mm f1.4
Yes, I have a video on the Canon 32 ;)
nice done. a very comprehensive test with real life examples. very appreciate thanks
thank you for this video guy! i'm waiting on my M50, should be a couple of weeks, very excited :) after some research and watching your video i know both the 11-22mm F4 and the 22mm F2 will both be necessary in my lens 'arsenal', keep rocking!
Best video i have ever watch on iso testing 😯👍
thanks 😉
So the lens I wanna try with the M50 + Viltrox is the Sigma 20mm F1.4.
It's like a Full Frame 23mm F1.0 with auto focus. I've been using a Canon 600D with a Rokinon 14mm F2.8 for years now, I am so over manual focus and the shit low light. It has a diagonal FOV of 87° that I am used to, so the speedboosted 20mm is about the same.
I love the 22mm. Lack of stabilization is the only con for me.
Very good comparison lens among 3 lenses in both indoor and outdoor low light situation.
The 50mm with the speed booster is a great low light lens but that crop factor for handheld selfie shots is rough unless all you want in the frame is your face. All-in-all, I think I liked the EF-M 22mm lens the best, decent low light and a little more than just your face. I think it boils down to the intended use.

Best review for low light and this camera.
I know this is an old video but I’m looking for an upgrade to my current 40D. Do you reckon this would be good for nightclub videography? Cheers dude!
yes you could but I would recommend the m6mkii with a faster lens, like one of 1.4 primes I reviewed. Check out my sigma 16mm review content and see if that would work for you. some of the model shots for video are similar lighting to a night club
Looking to get the M50 with this lens and this video was so helpful! I shoot a lot in restaurants so useable footage in low light is helpful!
Also those punny food cushions. Sold.
@@dejashu you're the first one to even mention them 🤩
The Nifty Fifty was definitely the best performer of the 3. Glad I bought it when I did. Just wondering why you didn't test the 32mm as well.
Thank you for the amazing review!
Excellent video!!!! You sure know what we want to know!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm more into photography rather than doing video stuff. Wondering if I should just settle for the M100 or dish out more for the M50? Worth the extra?
oh god i'm definitely going to buy that 22mm f2 for vlog. Of course 50mm with speedbooster is a winner here but cannot vlog with that setup.
The 22mm would be difficult to vlog with, due to the crop of the censor the 22mm is about the full frame equivalent to a 35mm
Firdaus Abu Bakar I love the 22mm for filming with a tripod and photography, but remember that it does not have image stabilization. The kit lens is still better for vlogging.
@@frankprogrammer thanks for the info. I tested the lens and the no stabilisation is really downside when it comes to handheld video. I have to look for other lens for now.
thx for the comparison i think im gona get the a6400 for lowlight
Awesome video bro! Great personality. Subscribed!
Very good video, what app do you use to see the view from the camera 📷 on your mobile? Thanks Barry Spain 🇪🇸
I have this camera, but in place of the 22mm, f/2 I use the 24mm, f/2.8 w/adapter
So do I. How is your focusing noise in videos? I have bad noise :(.
this video give me a lot of idea... thnx for making this video...
do the milkyway timelapse by m50
Great video. Congratulations! Keep on going !!
Awesome man, thanks for the video!
Friend, which is better to buy? 22mm worth buying for a video? Thank you for the video. There are no such reviews on Russian-language channels.
I think with 3200 ISO its not usable with brighter lights but when u should lowlight the softer result u get with lower iso sometimes can even support the result as long as its not getting too grainy.
I can hear the movie servo AF during each refocus.
Thanks
Thank you for this comparison! Can you use the 22mm with the Viltrox?
Thank you for the video, which is I'm looking for.Really helpful.
Oh you make me to get one. Boosted 50mm is the best for me.
Thank you
Thanks for the tests! Very thorough and informative. Looks like I'll be getting the 22mm for its price and low light capability.
Absolutely great video, earned my Sub!
great video, thanks. was there just an AF sound with the speed booster?
Excellent video.
hi , do you have a test for canon R1O ,,?thks from Paris
Great video. Just recently purchased the M50. I've shot lots of videos on my channel using a cellphone and 3axis gimble. I'm interested in which tripod (hand held?) you were waiting on.... I have the Viltrox speed booster /Cannon 50mm lens set up. My arms are too short! LOL
With the Ef-m 11-22mm lens can I go with an iso of 400 in a dim light situation?
For video: At 11mm if you have something to light your subject directly you could expect to have decent exposure at ISO 400 f4, but this video shows you how dim you can go before you see the ISO need to go far higher. Generally defining "dim" I would expect you'll need a higher ISO than that for decent exposure.
I like your name (: @Drive By Reviews
It's very cool.
is it possible to use the booster with the 22 or 11-22mm lenses? if so would it do anything?
booster is only for full frame lens
I got the 50m an speed booster but I wanna get the 11-22 soon but after that I'm definitely getting that 22m I got a 2.8 24m but it won't go with my speed booster adapter
Is this default kit lens 🙄?
Sigma 16mm 1.4 changed everything for the m mount
awesome video love your content
Great video! I am wondering what the fast 1.2 and 1.4 lenses would look like with the speed booster!
I have the 1.4 and took several stills with the full moon out. they looked like a grainy full sun shots.
How can you shoot video via the canon app, is it a feature only for the midrange mirrorless ? since I got a m100 and I cant figure out how to shoot video via the app...
Can you do a review on square dancing?
Absolutely, I'll make a square dancing review if you make a cameo and be my do-si-do partner
nifty fifty with the speed booster worked the best despite the very too close for comfort shot 😅
this is very indepth... thank you for this video. I'm just stuck between which adapter to buy. I'm scared of viltrox because of the vignetting that people are proclaiming . :D
Luckily there's a great return policy almost everywhere is sold. Of course I generally recommend amazon :P thanks for watching!
Thank you!
I just uploaded my very first video shot with m50 mark ii ! And I’m struggling with the brightness…
Lens and settings, make sure they're set for low light and you should be good.
How on earth do you manage to get no noise above 1600 ISO?!🤯
Thanks for your useful test video and I’ll sell my M50😂
Excellent video! One question. Is there any noise from the focussing motor with the speed booster ?
Yes, very light but I can perceive it with my naked ear. Seems about the same as other STM AF noise so I don't think the booster changes that. I used the VideoMic Go shotgun mic from Rode for this video and noticed I could pick up the AF noise at various times in the video. If you up the audio you can hear it and judge for yourself.
Thank you for your response. It has helped! One more question. I have the canon m50 and I want to video a group of people. What focus setting will work best so that everyone is in focus? (I’ve subscribed!)
@@alifaisal good question, it depends what kind of video you're intending. Generally, if you want everyone in focus and they're not in a line, you should use area AF and f4-6. If you're being more artistic with DOF or shooting low light then you'll need to open up to f2.8 or so. Occassionally in low light I find single point AF to improve accuracy and speed. Manual focus with focus peaking on is also a decent option if you want the camera operator to have full control, works well with slower aperture and if the camera and group stay in fixed locations.
Drive By Reviews it’s a family vacation so bit like a vlog type video but with many subjects in the frame (rather than a selfie vlog). Manual focus might be a pain so trying to avoid that. Lens I will use are efm 15-45 and efm 22. I tried zone AF with the 15-45 but it was hit and miss. And single point would only focus the closest person in the frame.
@@alifaisal Sounds like you need to use a smaller aperture setting for a larger DOF. Hit and miss should only happen if people in the Area AF are simultaneously outside of the DOF at opposite sides, so if you want everyone in focus always you'll need a large DOF. As in with group photos, focusing on the closest subject is the strategy but if 3 lines of people require f5.6, for a group to all stay in focus for a video where they move beyond that 3 ft area you may need f8 or slower.
Does the initial vlog footage in the room seem sort of soft to anyone else. What I mean is it seems not sharp. Is it just me?
My 11-22mm lens literally looks almost like you’re watching static on a tv with any light that isn’t super bright. I bought from amazon, could I have gotten a dud? It doesn’t look like this video at all 😭
What mode are you shooting in? If you're not in a mode to keep aperture at max or if you've zoomed into 22mm it will use a higher ISO due to the low amount of light coming into the lens.
@@DriveByReviews I was messing with my settings a bit more and i think it mainly has to do with the high iso and aperture! I didn’t realize I needed a higher iso when I zoomed in! (I’m a beginner and trying to learn lol!)
Ehi, nice video!! What app do you use on your phone?
the canon camera connect app
Love this comprehensive comparison, but I still have not got the camera yet, and when I do I will have
a kit lens only. So have you reviewed the kit lens anywhere? Sub.
The original M50 review has all kit lens examples, but I haven't done an in depth review of it.
Is there any way to use that last lens but also make it wide angle?
buy a 32mm f1.4

拍得很好,继续加油
what i NEED is to use two mics on the M50. One mic for left channel, one for right.
Is this even possible?
Xbot4Life you can get stereo microphones
Hey! Do you apply any kind of noise reduction to your video? All of the iso up to 3200 look soo clean!! And mine looks a bit more on the dirty side... Any help?
Nope, no noise reduction. Does your footage look different before and after render? If so it may be your editor output settings. In this video I'm shooting 1080 29.97 in video mode with AWB white priority.
Thanks for the fast response! Will look into it!
@@DriveByReviews how on earth do you make videos with no noise???!! What picture profile do you use? My low light videos are extremely noisy, just pure rubbish. How do you manage to get so good results?
How can you even shoot this with canon m50?? Mine only does 1080 at 25 or 50p not 30p!?! And it doesn't go down to 100 or 165Iso, how it can be?
choose us region not europe or asia
The time stamps though?
Thanks for the video 👍😊
What settings are you using for your profile? Standard?
Yes standard
👍
omg the last video test is going to make me throw up
DOT PLEASE😭
