Canon EF-M 11-22mm REVIEW -The BEST wide for M

- In this video I'm going to review the Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM wide angle zoom lens, which I think is the best super wide for the M.
My Instagram: / sulantoblog
A very good, balanced and practical review for anyone considering the lens. The sample images were well selected and showed a wide range of different focal lengths and shooting conditions. Even video features got covered. I also appreciated the actual videography of the vlog; well chosen and nicely composed, varied spots for different segments created a good visual rhythm for the narrative. Great Helsinki winter weather as a bonus. ;)
Thanks for your comment Mika. Can't beat the Helsinki winter weather 😅
I like the clarity and pace with which you speak. Great for a non native English speaker. Thanks for the review.
Thank you for your comment.
It's good to know that I can take a good photo that satisfies me with a $300-ish lens on a camera costing under $1000 versus a lens that cost over a $1000 on a camera costing over $2000. He seems respectable and honest in his review. I will make my own judgment when the lens arrives and maybe post a review on Amazon after using it for a few days.
Nice combination of explaining the lens and giving lots of samples in between. I *like* it.
Thank you thank you thank you. This is exactly the kind of lens I need for my M50 mirrorless camera. I need a lens for landscapes and I love the pictures you showed.
Thanks!
Nice job on the video. I love seeing the different locations. I've got the M50 with kit lens, and the 22mm pancake (only because I was told I needed that... not sure what to do with it).
I would really like a wide angle lens, but I'm holding off on the 11-22mm as it's fairly expensive for me - $350 us dollars (€305 euros). Thanks for keeping the M50 content going! Cheers... brian. 🔥
Thanks for your comment. The 22mm pancake is small and light, so it's nice when you prefer that.
great review! so nice to be able to follow the commentary, as in many videos, the dialogue is so fast it scrambles my brain! (i'm even older than you!!) oh - and i think i'll be buying this lens very soon!
Thanks! Some say I speak too slowly😀
No words to the performance with really close subjects...I heard the lense make really good results in a distance of 10cm to the subject...
I didn't mention it probably because I haven't used the lens much for close up subjects, but the min focus distance is 15 cm from the sensor, so it can focus on less than 10 cm from the front lens. Such a wide lens is not optimal for close up subjects, but of course the short min focus distance is a good feature. My only complaints with this lens are the ones that I mentioned, the slow max aperture and the vignetting.
Great review and superb photos taken with this lens. I already had the Tokina 11-16mm and wonder how it compares. It is quite large and heavy.
Thanks! I have not used the Tokina, so can't comment on that. The Canon is quite tiny and if that's your priority, it's a great lens.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
I loved this video, you took some great pictures, I think this is going to be my next lens purchase.
Thank you.
Beautiful shots, wonderful review. 👌
Glad you enjoyed it.
Sigma recently released EFM 16mm f/1.4 prime lens. Another good review 👍
Seeing that little M getting wet in snowy weather is giving me slight anxiety 😅
A weather sealed M-series camera/lens would be amazing.
kiitos videosta!
Kiitos katselusta.
Meinaan upgreidaa mun kuvausmatskut niin tässä pähkäilly ottavani m6 mkii tolla linssillä
I really have to get this lens.
Great and detail review, like your photo!!
Thanks.
very helpful, i bought canon m6 and many lenses because of your reviews
Just bought the M50 today. Got the 32 1.4 but this one is definitely my next purchase. Great review 👍
Thanks for your comment.
I also got m50..kitlense and i have 50mm.... but this also good needs to buy hehehe
Thank you so much for this review! Really helped me in deciding which lens to buy for my new Canon M100. Great pictures too :)
Thanks!
Hi! Im a newbie user of canon m100. And I only have 18-45mm lens for vlogging and Im looking for the best wide lens for my canon m100. may I ask if you still need an adaptor for this lens? Thank you for answering in advance 😊
-SENDER FROM THE PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭
@@monicadones No you do not need an adapter. This lens is made for Mirrorless Cameras
Just joined your channel, great review, I am looking for a wide lenses for M50, do you still think in 22 it is the best lenses to acquire?
There are not that many lenses for Canon M and this wide zoom is really nice.
Thank you for another excellent review!
Thanks.
Good review! How did you like the weather? It looked pretty crappy to me!
Thanks, Peter. The weather looked crappy, but it was not that bad.
Very good Video. Thanks
Thank you too!
I guess it is super cold there.
good share
great report this lens is first on my bucket list stay safe and see ya
Thanks for your comment and take great images.
Really good review, convinced me to order this lens.
Nice channel!! But What are you being filmed with? The Video quality is just off the chart ;)
Thanks! I don't remember any more what camera was used in this one, but today I use the Lumix GH5s.
Thank you. Yes, an excellent lens indeed.
Thanks.
Do you have a production equip list for this one? Very well done. Seems like you use a wireless mic also..
I was filmed by a friend of mine and I think he used Olympus E-M1II, but I don't remember which lens. I used the Boya BY-WM8 wireless system, with the Rode lavalier mic.
Nice review. Thanks !!
Thanks for watching!
Really good
Thank you! Cheers!
does this lens have to be use with Canon M cameras? I have the M50, just wonder if I upgrage better quality camera later yeras, can it be used with other kind none "M" cameras? maybe with some kind adapter?
The lens only fits on Canon M.
Really excellent production and advice, thank you!
Thanks!
Looked through your videos, happy to have found you. I shoot video mostly, Oregon and Alaska. Scenery and game.
Worked at Kiruna as wireless engineer consultant.
@@alaskalonghunters2990 Kiruna is not that far from Helsinki and a lot closer than Alaska😀
Come over to Alaska sometime and give me some lessons!!
Nice review and very useful. Were all your images shoot in RAW?
Thanks. Yes, I shoot RAW.
@@mattisulanto thanks for the reply. Lovely images
When I used either M6, M50 or M100 with this lens EFM11-22mm to take selfie by using internal flash, a dark shadows will be appeared at bottom.
Yes, because the flash is too low and the lens creates a shadow.
Nicely made review and editing!
wish canon make some faster efm lens, I hate to have to adopt EF lens to get that.
Subscribed! Greetings from Indonesia 👋
Thanks for subbing!
Thx for that Video it helps me
Thank you!
Watching in 2023, yep 2019 was an interesting year wasn't it!!!
I guess it was...
canon and panasonic go together!))) - i have Canon M6, but i prefer to shoot wide angle with 7-14/4 from Panasonic - 4mm wider)))
Nice review!
Thanks!
I am currently using the EF-S 10-18 STM w/adapter on my M50
Michael Didomenico I am wondering which lens between these two works better for landscape photography
@@Whatever-dl8no The clear benefit of the 11-22 is that it is much smaller. Also as it goes up to 22 mm you do not necessarily nee another lens with you . Though tat 22 you will lose one f-stop compered to the kit.
camerasize.com/compact/#776.386,776.424.2,ha,t
Only suggestions are reporting the price from the secondary market. There is no way people will pay the msrp for the 15 to 45mm when there are so many people selling it online.
My point was that Canon has a very high price for the kit zoom, but maybe in the future I'll check also the used prices.
hello can you recommend a manual wide angle lens that doesn't break the bank?
Check out some of the Chinese brands like Laowa, 7Artisans, TTArtisan etc.
Thanks for the review. Definitely thinking about getting this
The best one, because the only one (except Chinese manual focus lenses)
But to have that clear: The Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Zero-D is fantastic. Took me a while to invest 600€ in a Chinese lens, but Laowa to me is the most premium Chinese lens manufacturer out there. Love this lens on my M5.
@@6rimR3ap3r Nice! And it is wider and faster than canons 11-22.
Nice review thanks so much for sharing!
My pleasure. Thanks for the comment.
Nice video sir ;) Subscribed!
Thanks!
@sulantoblog I have a question, I notice on your photos that you have set the ISO most of the time to 100. I'm a bit confuse because you shot night scene in the city and I thought we needed a higher ISO when taking photos in low light??
I don't have any night scenes in this video. However, high ISO is only needed, if you need a short shutter speed in low light.
Wow, I thought the Carnival pics were at night too! It could pass as night photos.
LOL great review but just watching this video made me shiver!
Thanks😀
For Macro Photography how would this lens fare?
This is not a macro lens. Don't buy this for macro.
@@mattisulanto Thank you for the advice. The clarification is helpful. I am an amateur so I was seeing if this could function for that aspect of photography as well.
I am looking for a lens to do Astrophotography. Unfortunately, I feel that the aperture is not so large on this lens. I have a canon M10. Can you suggest something for Astrophotography?
I'm not an expert in that, but I would think the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 could work well. It should become available for Canon soon.
Hi, but what other lenses with the Canon adapter you are talking about that are other choices of the 11-22 ?
You can use any EF os EF-S lens. I'm not using Canon any more, so I don't know exactly what is available right now.
@@mattisulanto Thank you, I have the EF 50mm an the EFS 55-250 and EF-M 22mm and of course the EF-M 15-45, but I'm in a need for a vlogin lens
@@LuisCarlosJimenez There is a Canon EF-S 10-20mm or something like that. It could work and sometimes you see them used for a good price. But this 11-22mm is a good vlogging lens in my opinion.
Great Review!
Would you recommend this lens if you own the EF M 22mm?
Yes, if you need a superwide.
Absolutely, They work nicely together. This is f/5.6 at 22 mm so the 22 mm is better in low light even considering lack of IS. This is very wide, you essentially get 90 degrees to the image horizontally. At 11 mm you get twice the amount to the image as with 22 mm. Of course if you have the 15-45 mm do not get this if it is wide enough.
Good sir, what type of camera bag are you using? Looks good.
I have a video coming out today about my streetphotography gear and I'll also explain may bag. Please check it out at 9 pm EET.
What did u film this video with ?
I can't remember any more, I'm really sorry.
Nice video.
Thank you.
Great vid, I want to shoot videos wide on low light - which lens on the M series would be suitable in your opinion?
I purchased the 11-22mm lens and found it to be poor in low light settings, I am getting the 22mm instead.
@@MsSalisha13 I have the 22mm and its great for low light. It isn't wide angle sadly
Jibzo I have the 11-22mm, which is amazing for wide angle but poor at low light.
I shoot with canon 11-22, very happy. You can see examples on my channel
Hi! thanks for the sharing this review. Can you share what is the lens you are using shooting this video? Mine to share? thanks.
Thanks for your comment. My cameraman uses Olympus, but I don't remember which lens he used here. I'm sorry.
What lens will be better to use as wide angle in my kit with 18mm-150 mm , 22mm pancake or 11-22 mm?
If you have the 18-150mm, then you need the 11-22mm, if you want wider.
@@mattisulanto thank you
does this fit the M3?
It is compatible with every Canon EF-M mount camera and the M3 is one of them.
Hello! New to your channel, excellent work! Do you recommend this lens for the Canon M50? What do you recommend for travel and architecture photography for the M50? Thank you. Love from South Africa.
Thanks! Yes, if you need ultra wide zoom, this is a good choice. It depends on what kind of architecture and travel photos you are making. My travel lens would the EF-M 22mm f/2 and for architecture this zoom.
sulantoblog thank you for the response. Which is the best for low light between the two, the 11-22mm or the 22mm?
It really depends on what kind of low light photography you are doing. Both are good, but for different purposes. The zoom is better for static subjects and the prime is better for "action" type of situations.
sulantoblog it is more static\stationary pictures at night. Thank you for your help, it is greatly appreciated. I wish you well ☺
Anything where you don't need a fast shutter speed.
No adapter is needed with this lens.
@@mattisulanto thank you sooo much sir! God bless!
lightroom remove vinette? preset?
Before I ask my question, I'll preface by saying when it comes to photography, I'm a complete novice. I just got the Canon EOS M50 Mark II with the EF-M15-45mm + EF-M 55-200mm lenses. Can someone please tell me what this lens would do for me that those lenses won't? Thank you in advance!
This a wide angle lens and you can fit more in the frame from the same distance compared to your 15-45mm. They overlap in 15-22mm, though. However, if you feel you are happy with your current lenses, don't buy anything. Buy only when you need something and you know where to use it.
@@mattisulanto Thank you!
How does it compare to the 16-35 L lens for sharpness?
I haven't compared them side by side, besides the 16-35mm is a full frame DSLR lens.
Why would you see those as alternatives? This is much wider. I do not get why anyone would buy 16-35 mm when the kit already is 15-45 mm.
This should be enough for comparison:

Finland???
Yes.
@@mattisulanto Hei :D! osaatko sanoa onko Canon EOS M mallilla mahdollista kuvata korkealaatuista videota ilman uutta objektiivia? Kyseessä siis 2013/2014 Canon EOS M kameran mukana tulleella objektiivilla
@@DentsutXD Se tietysti riippuu mikä on korkealaatuista kenenkin mielestä, mutta kyllä ainahan se on enemmän käyttäjästä kiinni kuin välineistä. Onhan esim. iPhonella kuvattu ihan hienoja elokuvia. Eli siis, minun mielestäni Canonilla pitäisi pystyä tekemään ihan hyvän näköisiä videoita ja ihan sillä mukana tulleella objektiivilla.
