Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens review with samples

  • This is the first of my reviews of Canon's EF-M lenses - which are only for their EOS M mirrorless system, with their APS-C sensors. EF-M lenses will not work with digital SLR cameras...which seems like a shame, considering this little potential gem of a pancake lens.
    Find it here (Amazon affiliate link):
    geni.us/canone...
    I bought the EOS M3 to do general APS-C testing, as it's currently the cheapest way to get hold of a 24mp Canon APS-C camera - being able to review the native mirrorless lenses is just a handy bonus.

    I've had this lens since 2018 on my m100. It's seriously good. In terms of image quality, quite comparable to my massive Sigma 17-50 mm F2.8 which is a great lens. This lens is also way sharper than the Canon 50mm f1.8 no matter what aperture the 50mm is using.
    Sharpness, Contrast and Color rendition are very good! The focal length is extremely useful

    In a completly random moment in the middle of my day I though "WAIT! Christopher Frost has a Canon Mirrorles Camera like mine!" I should write him and tell that it would be great to see some EF-M lens videos, apart of the ussual EF and EF-S series... First thing I saw when i type your name: 22 EF-M Review. The very next lens I want to buy. THANK YOU SIR!

    I love the 22mm lens. Really the only thing I'd want to change is to add IS (which would most likely add lens elements and therefore size). I found myself reaching for it way more often than the other lenses when traveling with my M. It's even better now that I upgraded to the M3.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 лет назад +1

      It would be AMAZING with IS. But yes, as you say, in a pancake lens, it would be beyond human acheivement at this point...

    I've had this lens since almost 2 years on the original eos-m body which is even smaller. Both got at a high discounted value. Lens was under 80 dollars new. Its a very versatile combination as it can function as a semi macro and a medium wide at the same time. If one works manually the eos-m offers excellent optical quality with almost any lens I've put on. i've kept the camera though I also now have the sony a7r. They complement each other well and in different ways

    Even at this late date and owning some great R series cameras and lenses, I just can't part with my M50 and M100 with this lens, the 15-45mm and macro combo. 24MP is still greater detail than my incredible Canon IP8720 photo printer at 13x19. Thanks again for the great videos!

    I bought an old eos m with the 22mm stm and some other accesooires a couple of days ago for about 200 euros. So far I'm very happy, value for money seems unbeatable. Size and image quality was the main criteria and I can't think of any other aps-c camera which is so small and has such a fast pancake lens.

    Great review! Lovely to see that someone is investing some time into reviewing these EF-M lenses, it's certainly a great system!
    Question: would you say this is a better all round prime to use with the EOS M in comparison with some of Canon's EF primes like, for example, the classic 50mm F1.8? Do you have an idea of how they compare sharpness wise?

    • @christopherfrost

      I have been testing out some other lenses, yes...

  • @necrisro
    @necrisro 2 года назад +4

    I got this for the compactness and I can say it was a let-down for the price. Realistically the stock 15-45mm produces more or less the same quality of pictures, you can't fool physics and neither can that small hole, what little you gain in sharpness from a prime you lose from not having the image stabilization, the bokeh is very similar and you also lose the zoom in the process. I also have the 32mm lens and that is visibly better than the kit in almost every photo I take but this one... not so much.

    • @xFreyelis
      @xFreyelis 2 года назад +3

      The kit lens suck at indoor and night photography though with that high f/3.5 as the minimum, making you either compensate w/ ISO (resulting in grainy photos) or slow down the shutter (which is prone to being blurred when hand-held).

    Canon is more serious about mirrorless cameras than Nikon. The canon APS-C sensor is by far more capable than the one inch sensor is used on Nikon 1 mirrorless cameras.
    Most Canon dSLR EF lenses are very old. I was hoping by Canon a nice collection of sharp prime EOS-M lenses. Actually the pancake lens is the one of the two prime lens for the Canon mirroless cameras. The other one is a new 2016 macro lens with good magnification 1.2X and two intergraded led lights.
    Canon is more experienced than Sony in Lenses and should have made the difference. However it lets Sony to reign.

      Sony optics are all MINOLTA . MINOLTA optical engineering ( Rokkor ) bought by Sony . Considering that MINOLTA supplied glass and built lenses for LEICA , well , what you have is superior lens technology that Sony bought at a time when MINOLTA dropped the ball on digital DSLR market entry .

    • @manwhalejoe6962
      @manwhalejoe6962 7 лет назад +1

      If you are interested in primes, a good option for the EOS M3 or M5 is actually mounting the canon ef 40mm f/2.8 pancake or the nifty fifty EF 50mm f/1.8 using the adapter. The advantage is the adapter allows use of normal autofocus since they're canon lenses, and they are still small enough to be a decent balance for the M cameras. Also they are $100-200 which is much cheaper than other prime lenses. If you like manual focus, there is a Meike EOS-M mount 35mm f/1.7 lens for less than $100 that is a great deal (but you have to zone focus or manually focus)

    • @aliasdmr
      @aliasdmr 7 лет назад

      M Dat so ef s 50mm 1.8 still has better optic than ef m 22mm?

    • @manwhalejoe6962
      @manwhalejoe6962 7 лет назад +1

      The main differences are between focal lengths, not sharpness. The 22, 40, and 50mm are all great inexpensive lenses. The EF-M 22mm lens is very sharp, quiet, and makes the camera very unobtrusive. It's a good all around lens. The EF 40mm is a little more zoomed in, so its a little harder to use for landscape shots or group shots, but it is more effective for portraits, head shots, and for situations when you want to zoom in a little, like if you are shooting subjects further away (ie at a graduation, on a stage not too far away). However, it is still a decent all around lens if you tend to keep your distance and take photos of people from 8-10 feet away. The 50mm takes it in even tighter, and is GREAT for professional looking portraits, and the aperture of 1.8 means you can use it in low light indoors (churches, weddings, bars, etc) and get much better pictures than with a kit lens. Having said that, it is nigh impossible to get group shots indoors because its too zoomed in - you will have your back to the wall all night.

  • @robinhofotos2005
    @robinhofotos2005 7 лет назад +9

    Well...
    A 22mm ƒ/2.0 lens would only have an 11mm opening at ƒ/2.0.
    After all, aperture is a ratio, and 22/2=11.

      Danilo Sagarang thats not how focal length works don’t pay attention to that 💀. This lens is built for the m series so the focal length will stay the same. The aperture just allows more light to come in or keep it out. It also affects bokeh

    Hi,
    Like your review of this lens unfortunately I cannot use it because it is only available in EF-M mount. Because of this specialised mount there are not many users.
    Just a suggestion in future if you want to review Fujifilm lenses just review the latest releases eg 23mm f2.0 don't bother(waste your time) with older lenses because they had be reviewed by MANY users/reviewers.
    My suggestion quickly get hold of this lens, 23mm f2 when it hits the shop and do a thorough review ahead of everyone else if not try to be the first few reviewers and don't leave till everyone has done it to death.

    Hello,Dear Mr. Frost.
    i have been watching your videos for a few months and i gotta say your reviews are top notch and they helped me alot deciding what to buy and what not to. For that, i thank you very much.
    I bought EOS M3 , been shooting with the kit ef-m 15-45mm lens, bought a ef-m 55-200mm too. 15-45mm worked well for wide angles and any kind of situation, i even used my 55-200mm for moon photography. But though they were good for daily use, i have some speed complaint..
    I am considering to buy a canon 50mm f/1.8 stm as a beginner on budget, and i got and mount-adapter ahead . but i am worried about the focal length, will the 50mm become more narrow because of the mount adapter ? or should i consider other mm lens ?
    i need speed, i need a lens good for street, wedding, daily use, and i am also on budget. I need an advice from a professional like Mr. Frost.
    Thank you, Sir.

    • @christopherfrost

      A 50mm lens on a Canon APS-C camera, like the EOS M, will be 80mm (1.6x) so it is a little tight. A good option might be to use the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 ART, or the Samyang 21mm f/1.4 (if you don't mind manual focus)

      I'm going to see how my other specialised tests on that camera do, to see if more are financially viable for me. A new test of the 15-45 and 18-55 lenses comes out today

    Hello again Mr. FROST.
    How do you compare between ef-m 22mf/2.0 and EF-S 24mm f/2.8?
    I would love to see you comparing the focal length, the BOKEH, and the night photo and video shots if you don't mind.
    Thanks you very much.

    I am interested in this system and this lens, as it appears to have the lowest aperture in the price range, while also give a good angle on a crop sensor. What you said about the out-of-focus softness has me wondering though. I really like the bokeh from the 50/1.8. It looks wonderful. So how is it that a 0.2 difference in aperture can take all of it away? Is it because of the focal length? I am looking for a good allrounder and the 50 is a bit narrow for street and buildings on asp-c.

      @christopherfrost  7 лет назад +1

      It's because of the focal length. On a wider angle lens the out of focus backgrounds are nowhere near as noticeable at normal working distances

    Hello Christopher, could you help me? I just bought this lens and found the focus ring harder to rotate than the 15-45 lens ring. Is it like that, or is it as smooth as the kit lens? Thank you!

    hmm yes F2
    the front lens is already super small a other proof that the opeing has nothing to do with the lightstrenght
    but i guess as always the value for F2 mounted will have the same amount of light as a lens with a big diameter and also call itself F2

      @TheJudge064 5 лет назад

      It does. F no. = Focal length/ aperture opening. In this case it only has to be 11mm wide.

    Hi Chris, I am trying to get a 35mm lens for street and everyday photography. Thinking either sigma 35mm 1.4 (as you reviewed it is superb) ot sigma 24-35mm f2. Now 35mm prime has better quality but 24-35 has a bit flexibility in terms of focal range. But photos may not be as sharp as 35mm prime. Which one should I go for? Please help!! Thank you!

      No idea about the future lineup of EF-M lenses. Canon wobbled a bit about them, but it seems they've decided to keep going now which is a wise decision.

    Love your videos, Chris, I have a question about focal lengths--I get why a full frame focal length isn't the same on an APS-C, but why would a 22mm lens that's designed for an APS-C not be equivalent to a full frame 22mm lens?

    • @ericdanthon2
      @ericdanthon2 4 года назад +1

      It would be 22mm on a full frame camera. It's equivalent to a 35mm focal length on an APSC camera. Multiply the men's by 1.6 which is the crop factor

      Bingo. I got a mint M6 Mk II for $160 US which has the internal coin battery fault (internal clock resets when battery is removed). No problem for me as I only charge in-camera anyways, and the owner just wanted rid of it. Paired with this pancake it's my go-to street machine now, and all for well under $300.

    Hi Cris, which have more background blur (buket) ? The lens EF-M 45mm f/6,3 or EF-M 22mm f/2? I have a EF-M 15-45mm f/ 5,6-6,3 on my Canon EOS M10.

    • @christopherfrost

      The 22mm lens give a more out of focus background at the 22mm focal length, as it obviously has a wider aperture

    On these M lenses, there is no M -AF switch , so how to shoot in manual mode?

    Hello, loving your videos! I watch them every single day actually! I am currently contemplating getting this EF-M 22mm f/2 vs Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8. I have other lenses that cover 10-18 (slower) and 24-105 (slower). Other than the size and weight, which would you choose between the two EF-M 22mm f/2 vs Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8? Thank you again!

    • @christopherfrost

      If you're using a digital SLR camera then you won't be able to use this 22mm lens at all. If I could only have one lens it would be the zoom lens. All the best!

    I'd like to have a 22mm for crop Canon, that would be an almost perfect 35mm equivalent. If you have some influence on Canon Chris, let them know ;) :)

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 лет назад +1

      I think it's easier to design such lenses when it's for a mirrorless system because of the flange distance difference (I think) which could be why you won't see it for Digital SLRs. As for my influence on Canon, haha, there is none I'm afraid!

    Considering only image quality like corner sharpness, how would you compare this to the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art at the same aperture stops? I'm looking for a prime lens for my M5 below my EF 50mm 1.8 and to go along with my Tamron 17-50 2.8 (without IS).
    So far I'm considering the 22 f2, the Sigma 30 Art, Canon 28 2.8 IS USM or the 35 f2, but I favor below 35.
