How To Play The Intro To Mean Street - Metal Riff Academy

- In this video Mike Williams from www.ShredGuitarAcademy.com will teach you how to play the groundbreaking guitar intro to mean street by Ed Van Halen. Special thanks to Greg Ward for lending me the amazing Frankenstrat he built.
You think you know how creative Ed was until you start learning his shit and realize you haven't begun to understand his greatness.
Very well stated....
Chaplin Gean WORD.
Not poor lesson. No lesson. There are no tricks, rules or games. Just music!
True. A lot of us can copy what Ed did. But I don’t think any of us could create what Ed did.
I’m in a cover band right now and even though I’ve idolized Eddy since I was a kid, I’ve never actually attempted to play his stuff...long story short...I didn’t think it was possible to respect him more as a musician
only EVH would come up with some crazy SH@t like this. It's great that what 34 years later people are still trying to explain what he was doing. People talk crap about EVH but, Imagine 34 years ago trying to figure this out on your cassette tape . I love it! Nice job by the way
Ednerd - yep. That's what people did back in the day. No RUclips. Just endless stop, rewind, play. Stop, rewind, play. Buy a new tape cause the first one was stretched to shit. That or buy the tabs and I couldn't find that back in Newcastle Australia in 1979. I still struggle getting this intro down to the speed of the record but, hey, so it goes. Respect to you mate.
Ednerd I hear you..100% agree.. new generation don't even know how hard it is to figure out such licks through cassette tapes.imagine yourself in Europe in the early 90's and not in USA so have limited access to Guitar mags and Instructional videos. So no tabs bro! You should listen to the same lick may be 1000 times That was hell bro!
Here in the U.S. I used a turntable, set it at 16rpm from 33 1/3rpm, tuned down my guitar and then constantly played a part, lifted the needle & set it down again over and over and over. Lol. Learned a lot of VH and LZ that way. Those were the days.
Agreed. People don't seem to realize there was no internet way back then so obviously it's a LOT harder to learn guitar and master new techniques. We should respect all the guitarists in the 60's-90's because many of them were either self-taught or they had to innovate tricks on a guitar. Most of the time was just them figuring out playing whole pieces on their own. Not everyone could afford going to a music teacher considering that not many people were good at guitar to begin with. That's how I see it.
Whoever is shooting shade at EVH, doesn't know music, period.
I remember playing a high school keg party with a rival band, and the guitar player played this. I was completely devastated! Now all I have to do is find a time machine. Damn.....
Hated when that happened!
Lmao...I need a few trips back too. I HAVE somee wrongs to right.. lmk on finding that time machine...
Fair Warning is proof he is also one of the greatest Rhythm guitarists in Rock history.
True , the only problem is that the band didn’t actually write good songs. They’re one of the few bands I can think where there is a great drummer, great bassist, great singer , revolutionary guitar player,
But the songs themselves as a whole would be utterly forgettable, if it wasn’t for eddies ground-braking guitar parts
I mean , the songs just feel like they’re made for jocks in high school to listen to
100% party band... their music will be forgotten in time, but Eddy's revolutionary way of playing won't.@@markokovacevic3444
@@markokovacevic3444 Thats a wild take. The Fair Warning album is a masterpiece in my opinion, showing a side of Van Halen that wasn't seen before. Live your life tho
I always felt Ed Van Halen was one of the greatest rhythm guitarists I ever heard. Lead guitarist he was good, but too choppy for me. My choice for greatest lead guitarists of all time are Neal Schon and Steve Lukather. But I have to also say that both of those guys were incredible rhythm.guitarists also.
I don't know who would press dislike for this....the guy absolutely nailed it,and he does a very good job of explaining it
It was probably an accident. Nobody purposely downvotes something this helpful
A total miserable child would after not nursing off his mommy's bosom long enough.
Jealous People.
10 minutes to learn 20 seconds of guitar riffs. Like everyone says, you can analyze anything and learn to play it, but to create it in the first place is otherworldly. When Joe Satriani says "this is impossible to play", it says something... Miss you Ed... Nice job on the video!
How does someone like this guy learn to be able to copy something like this. That's the beauty of RUclips. When I first picked up a guitar in the late 70s the was nothing but a " bert weedon play in a day " book. Which was quite useless. Beginners nowadays are totally spoilt for choice. a young beginner will probably be further on in a week than I was in a year. Good luck to them and enjoy your chosen instrument

Great lesson, thanks!
Eddie has said that he was trying to mimic the slap techniques used by funk bass players. In the process he obviously came up with something very cool and made it his own, as Ed always does.
Yes and the pattern was inspired by Alex drum part after the solo on Light Up The Sky.
@@michaeldineenSG2018 ah cool
Eddie and his goddamn harmonics, never could get the hang of it.
@John Sticher actually from what he says he didn't put in ten thousand, probably more likely 4 or 5 thousand, he got really good really fast tho when he developed something new.
@MerkinMuffy I'm replying just in case you don't understand the concepts of Ed and his tapping harmonics. You can play an open note, then play a series of natural harmonics at the 5th, 7th and 12th frets by lightly touching the string as you pick just above the fret wire (there are others, especially if you listen to Mattias Eklundh). If you play a fretted note say at the 3rd string, 9th fret...just tap 5, 7 and 12 frets higher and you'll get the harmonics to sound really nice. So you will tap on the 14th, 16th and 21st frets. Just tap 5, 7 and 12 frets higher than whatever note you are fretting and you'll get these harmonics. it's just a matter of doing the quick math to let you know where to tap. Eddie would do this quickly on adjoining strings as in the 'Mean Street' part of his live solo (Live Without a Net). Once you get it, it's really quite easy to remember and then you can apply it to your own licks. This is what he is doing during the 'Mean Street' tapping from the album. He's just utilizing what harmonic he wants to tap as he's fretting different notes. Hope this helps anyone out there to visually see the technique clearer.
@@RichardGutierrezRG not a musician, got no clue what you said, love it.
@John Sticher Well said. I spent years playing and it literally is about how much you put in. When I was younger I would spend 5 or 6 hours in my bedroom playing.
I guess Im kinda off topic but do anybody know of a good place to watch newly released tv shows online?
Let's not forget that what made Eddie a legend was not the fact that he could play this intro. (Many guys in bar bands can play it, too.) It's the fact that he composed it.
I thought the same thing. Ed has proven he's capable of anything, but this song still stands out (to me) as the definition of Edward Van Halen.
i don't agree that most guys in 'the local bar band can play it'. i live in LA where theres thousands of insane guitarists. Im guessing quite a few of them couldn't properly play this. i do agree with the idea of what you're saying though.. but it's going to take me a few to get this down. this guy has obviously studied EVH in depth. and no, i'm not basing my opinion on how hard it might be for me.
No doubt. Who could even think of this? I have never seen ANYONE play this let alone flawless.......that is an over statement...........EDDIE!!!!!!!!!!
even then rarely do I see it in bars
that a big word, compost, $5.00 worth
Who the hell down votes this? Great job brother
mike eaton They are the idiots in every Guitar Center with the Marshall cranked up, butchering a Metallica song with that "I am Awesome" look on their face.
probably some Jimmy Page fans. LOL
A bunch of jack offs.
Ulysses Lim woah I’m a Jimmy Page fan at heart but Eddie still is there too, maybe I’m the only one
Probably David Crosby.
man...I have been playing this song for years without learning the intro. You helped me learn it in about 5 minutes! Thank you sir! You are what makes the internet a good thing. Great job and very easy to follow. I appreciate you taking the time!!
Damn wish I could learn this in 5 minutes! especially since the guy takes 10 minutes to teach it! thats skill right there.
@@Min3freak 💀💀💀💀
Best memory ever....hearing "Eruption" on a turn table even before one could hear it on the radio...1978
::takes an hour to explain 8 seconds of Ed’s playing:: shows how nuts Eddie was
I found my way back to this video after about 3 years. Just spectacular playing. I've never heard anyone totally nail this rhythm, but you did. Friggin' awesome!
Yo!
Who in the hell nowadays would come up with something like this??
Watching this breakdown makes me appreciate Ed's greatness even more. I Know I wasn't The only one, while watching this, was shaking the head, and saying to oneself, "Wow!"
Great lesson 👍, thanks for sharing brother!
No one. I fear for today's youth. I have two teenagers and just thought yesterday-I don't ever see kids getting together just to listen to music(new release), or even having fun doing whatever with it in the background like kids have done since what, the 50's?
@@srwven Honestly, it started when the internet came out.
Even today's internet guitar players all sound the same, and all play the same way.
My versions of songs look so different than what we see on here. Us old schoolers sat with a turntable on one side, our amp on the other.. you know what I mean 😬.
@@Scottocaster6668: I do, I'd set my turntable speed from 33-1/3rpm down to 16rpm, tune my guitar down to pitch and spend hours lifting and resetting the arm to the part I was learning over and over. Had to learn the leads in short sections. lol.
@@antithug7942 Yep, I feel ya brother.
Besides, I have so much fun doing it that way, I still do. You feel like you accomplished something. 2 days ago I decided to go back in time and figure out "Fever" (Judas Priest). Let me tell you, the kid STILL has it 🤣👍. What makes it easier is that they, like most bands from that era are tuned 440/standard.
@@Scottocaster6668: Priest is another one I spent a lot of time learning at the turntable too. Delivering the Goods, Hell Bent for Leather, Electric Eye, Another Thing Comin' etc. That's when I really knew how under rated Glenn Tipton truly was. He played his leads in a lot of different areas of the neck than most guitarists. Very unique. Didn't really notice it until I would start learning one of his leads. Our cover band played a shit load of Priest, Led Zep, AC/DC, Black Sabbath & several of Motley Crue's songs from Shout at the Devil, the only album we did covers from. And of course VH & The JHE, too.
Another masterpiece from the genius of Mr. EVH
i have watched satsuma and that dude is spot on and his tone is good . How the hell did eddie come up with this let alone as an intro to a song?Truly a gifted talented humanoid
Excellent job of breaking this down into easily learnable chunks. And you got right to the meat of how to play this riff without going into to too much unnecessary explanation of what you are playing, as so many other videos tend to do. There has to be that assumption that if you are trying to learn a riff of this level, that you already know how to play guitar. Good job Mike.
It's honestly amazing that in this day and age, 34 years after the album "Fair Warning" came out, people are still struggling with this riff! I still don't see anyone playing quite like Eddie did.
You did a fantastic job. Thanks for posting. I've always wanted to learn this but thought it was too hard. I think i'll try again.
Finally learning this after all of these years. Thank you Eddie
You make it look easy! How the hell did Eddie sit down and just come up with that ? Truly some incredible technique and probably the best Intro of any song hands down.
Eddie's style is just insane, you did a great job teaching his madness!
I've spent 2 months on it, but I got it down ! Thanks man, nobody teaches this as precisely as you do.
Hey man, AWESOME job on this video! I REALLY benefited from the lesson and loved how you broke it all down in time segments, etc. It made it one of the best and easiest lessons I have seen on RUclips, thank you for posting this! Mean Street is one of the coolest VH tunes and the way he makes the guitar scream is killer. You have it nailed down bro...great job!
Thanks for taking the time to make the video and explain. I learned the pre-verse and played from there and was never able to master tapping with harmonics.
That is a brilliant description of this elusive piece! Thank you so much.
I wish I had access to players like you when I was starting out :-/
Next best time to get this stuff down is right now!
Cheers!
Wow that's so rad to see it played up close, perfectly...
This is the best cover I’ve seen of this song great job!
dude...your lesson here is so amazing! I love the camera angle and how you break the song in to timed segments. Thanks for posting!
Mate, you make that shit look so easy, your tone and everything was spot on...
you are the only person I have seen get this note for note absolutely perfect . you are a really good teacher and I wish you would do more van halen songs. really great job with this lesson
Thanks Man! I've been playing guitar over 20 years, never nailed this one before.,Great job! Cleanest i've ever heard..
Awesome lesson! I already knew how to play it but you helped me with one harmonic I always had trouble with, thanks!
I have watched the first 23 seconds like 10 times! Just amazing! Always one of my favorite songs so its really awesome to see it broken down! Thanks!
Thanks for posting this bro, you're obviously playing it EXACTLY the way it was recorded and that's as badass as it gets.
Excellent tapping brother. 🎸 Thanks for the lesson and keep rockin'!!!! 🤘
Awesome, man -- this is exactly what I was looking for in a lesson for this piece. Thank you much

Not only does this sound like the most accurate example of this riff, but also, very clearly taught.
A tip of the hat to you.
Killer killer killer! Thanks for disecting the intro so well. Very well done! :) You have saved me tons of time. Thanks!!
Great job..I watched a few different videos yours is by far the clearest and thorough.
This is the best lesson out there for it and you play it right and teach it right. Some guys play it right and really don't teach it right. Ed developed the pattern from part of the drum part on Light Up The Sky. I was the first person to figure it out. Blew people's minds when I told them. I figured it out after listening to this intro about 1,000 times and one day was really dialed in listening to VHII. I was like Oh Snap that's it.
Thank you very much. Very cool your taking your time to share this stuff with us. I really appreciate it.
Awesome display of E.V.H; Thank you; I could never figure this riff out till now...Thanks!
Wowwww!! That was amazing to see it broken down. Thanks !!
This was a perfect instructional on how to play this.
It showed me how to do that hammering on technique that Billy Sheehan does which he mentioned that he got from Van Halen.
Perfect lesson, short and simply explained...thank you!
I love the way you teach! Thank you.
you are playing awsome man!
and also explane really good, thank you so much! keep rocking!
