    We need more tradesmen to take in young people to do apprenticeship jobs. Very important for the youth today to see the real work people are doing. Good to inform people about this type of work and how important it is.

      I totally agree. On the flip side of that...older people should not be denied apprenticeships. I'm a 51 year old woodworker that is completely self taught. I tried getting into an apprenticeship here in Nova Scotia...I was told I'm too old! So I'll prove them wrong and learn without them

      Not only that, but there's a big difference between googling things and doing them. If artisans don't teach younger people and take on apprentices, in 40 years there won't be anyone who knows how to do this properly.

      @Anjijamjar 2 месяца назад +3

      Apprentice farrier jobs are like hen’s teeth. To become a farrier through the Royal Company of Farriers (which farriers have to qualify to practise) is extremely difficult as the number of apprenticeships has dropped dramatically to the degree that farriers can’t afford to take an apprentice on.

    Aww, the pride and pleasure on Tom's face when Sam is talking about him and what a hardworking and committed lad he is. Such genuine respect and affection between them is lovely to see. There was a time when most teenagers went into apprenticeships instead of university, and part of a good apprenticeship was always the working relationship between older and younger people. So much more was learned about life than the work itself and I've met a few apprentices lately who love their jobs. They're learning and getting paid, and the friendly banter and laughter between them and their mentors was great to hear. I hope that more younger people are fortunate enough to get good apprenticeships like Tom's.🤞

    Hello, here in the great state of South Carolina USA. I came up on your channel just a day or two ago and have been watching many of your posts. Very impressed with your skills, especially impressed that all of the horses so far that I have seen you do seem to like you and that says a lot. Horses know whether you respect and like them and often that really pays off especially with new clients that may not have had the best farriers along the way. I help a lot of rescues here in the states as well as the World Horse Rescue in UK and Europe. So many rescues have terrible hoof problems and also may have had terrible people messing with their feet. If all farriers were to approach the animals the way you do, there wouldn't be any horses terrified of the farrier. In the US rescues always have numbers of Belgians that the Amish communities have had working for years and some have never had the proper hoof care. So when the rescues get them, it is really quite hard to find farriers that will work on them as their feet are a true mess, and on top of that they have been mistreated in many instances. We need to clone you Sam and send those clones to help our rescues give the last years of life for these overworked mistreated Belgians a pleasant time. I am going to tell some of the rescues that I donate to to start watching your work, and perhaps they can pass along suggestion to their farriers in a nice way so as not to tic them off as after all it is darn hard to get farriers to these rescues at all! I particularly liked your education on how to remove shoes without damaging the hoof itself or as you say the tendons as well. I do give credit to the rescues that are saving the big drafts from slaughter horrors, they try to get heavy duty stocks as soon as possible through donations so that the farriers that DO accept the work will be less likely to get injured working with horses that have been mistreated in their hoof care. The staff work very hard to do training as best they can to get the big drafts familiar with the stocks so they won't be terrified or have to be so heavily sedated that they are in danger of going down in the stocks. Love it that you young helper Tom is interested and learning all he can from you, there can never be enough truly good farriers who also have a connection to the horses.

I remember being told to hold a twitcher on one of the ponies whilst the on hand owner shod the pony, I cried, 😢. Lovely video. Tom, your tenacity to show up every week at the age of 15/16 is commendable, this ethic will enable you to go far. Well done. With stallions' growing much quicker, would you recommend the intervals to be reduced so it's not such a big job each time?

      @@racheloates6880Rachel, there are a few! There's one near me in Lancashire - but not enough, I agree.
      If the Worshipful Company had not been so reluctant to come up to speed with equality in the 1960s, I would've been one of the first, as I come from a long family line of farriers, my uncle wanted to take me on officially as an apprentice and I wanted to be one. He taught me such a lot at weekends and school holidays, but eventually we gave up the fight with the WCF and I moved onto a different career entirely.
