Many many years ago my farrier saved me from having my horse PTS after she completely severed the main tendons in her hind leg. My vet was amazing and managed to stitch the tendons together (in the field where the accident happened!! ) with my farrier standing next to him after an emergency phone call (what an absolute star, he dropped everything and dashed over). The minute the vet finished my farrier put on a shoe that he’d made on site with a stiletto heel about 1 1/4 inch high. Three months ago, he was diagnosed with diabetes, and the vet thought we'd PTS, but with a lot of trial and error, an implantation glucose monitor and being on 24 hour watch ( sugar would swing from extreme high to crash) we finally combined the right food with the right insulin and right time. After we switched insulin, he developed a severe foot irritation and was chewing them till the skin broke. It turned out to be staph/ MRSA. The vet was very grave, especially since my wife has an immune disease. But my wife wasn't giving up. We ordered a separate set of towels, disposable washcloths, gloves, and when the chlorhexadine didn't work, we went old stool. We ordered Lysol liquid in the brown bottle ( I saw my grandmother use it 50 years ago for staph) Every night, my wife wrapped his feet in cloth soaked in Lysol, then rinsed, then Epsom salts, then some lidocaine, then Paw relief due to the keratosis and massaged his toes for an hour, then disposable booties. 3 hours a night for 2 weeks and his feet were back to normal. You have to think outside the box to save someone you love. You don't give up until you've tried everything possible. I'm so glad your horse was saved. That would have been so traumatic.

Finally, Tom gets a chance to shine. For his age, I think Tom won. Pretty soon, Sam’ll be able to shoe twice as many horses in a day. I’m not sure who is prouder, Sam as the mentor, Tom as the apprentice, or Tom’s mom. Tom is definitely outgrowing the Tinky Winky moniker 😊.
Sam, since today's video is all about showing the viewer and teaching Tom the art of hand forging horse shoes, I had asked in an earlier video if you do other work hand forging other works of art in metal? Such as artistic designs say for fencing, gates, fireplace tools, knives or just your own artistic designs done in metal? Would love to see other metal works forged by you besides horse shoes. I imagine as much as you seem to enjoy working with metal you have other talents in this field. ❤🥰 As always you and now Tom do excellent work. By the way you can see he's been hanging out with you as he has begun picking up your mannerisms and your technical voice over explaining what he's doing. 🥰Be sure he also wears the microphone as he is so soft spoken you can't always catch all that he says. Hoping your new hoof ointment is a grand success for you. ❤
Hi Lisa, thank you so much for watching means so much to Me! I do make a few things from metal here and there hanging baskets wine racks etc iv never made any gates though😅 I mainly just make horseshoes to shoe horses with that’s my bred and butter since I’m a farrier the other type of metal Work is more a blacksmith thing. Haha yeh it’s I’m training Tom well he’s picking things up from me for sure he’s like my little brother it’s nice to see him grow into a confident young man aswell as a good farrier! Thank you so much 😊
@@Swfarriers Sam, am glad to hear you also enjoy creating other things in metal than just horse shoes. I saw a documentary on our public tv on hand forging a broadsword and another following an apprentice Sammari Sword maker learning how to make a correct Sammari sword. I think the apprenticeship was close to 10 yrs can't remember but it's a LONG time. Was so cool to watch them work. Haha, I get it though, gotta bring home the bacon first. 🥰 Am sure Tom will turn into a great farrier one day, and hopefully he to will want to pass on what he's learned from you. Sadly, any and all work done by hand crafting is becoming a lost art. I'm a self taught pastel artist (chalk, my Mom, her father, and grandfather, aunt, also artists, drawing, oil painting, pastel). I had a hard time trying to find a local artist to teach me the trade. Joined the local art studio and found 2 very talented ladies who have guided me, my work has won awards at the art center. Would love to see your hanging baskets, my Mom, sister, & I like our flowers. Potentially yet another way to bring home yet more bacon! LOL
I'm stunned the amount of workmanship and time it takes to make a single horseshoe. Sam how long does it take to create four horseshoes and fit them? What happens to the horseshoes that you remove? Is the metal recycled? I am totally fascinated by the work that you do! 👀
Sam may I ask, you’ve said in videos before that they feel with the sole of their hooves. So when you’re cutting down the sole they must feel that? Clearly it isn’t hurting them or you’d know about it 😂 but you’d think it would do with that being the part of the hoof they feel? Just interested. Yet Another great video. Please keep them coming. Especially these longer ones! And also more of the gym content when you can whenever your back is better ☺️ Can’t tell you how much I am enjoying your content. You are soo likeable, and it’s people like you that deserve to hit the big time on a platform like this. Showing your trade and skill and explaining how it all works is so interesting and you explain things so well. Rather than the overly saturated “prank” channels that are so redundant at this point. Can’t wait to see this channel take off, I watch a lot of RUclips and I genuinely can’t think of any channel that deserves it more than you, seriously. ☺️ Can we maybe meet your Dad one day too? Only if he’s up for it of Course! Sending love from Scottish Highlands 🏴💕 (We love the northerners here in Scotland) 😊
Hi Ashleigh, My understanding of the sole of the hoof is that it's similar to a callous - the surface is tough and generally doesn't feel pain. But underneath there IS sensitive tissue - so, like if you cut or scrape away too much of a callous, it's going to cause pain, and take some time to heal. Knowing how far to go is probably something his Dad "just knew" after years of experience, and Sam has absorbed that knowledge after years of working with his Dad.
I so enjoyed this video. Sam as always, patient with positive reinforcement is apparent in Tom's progress. It goes without saying Tom your natural talent shines.❤
What an absolute art Sam, you really are so good at what you do. Tom has big shoes to fill but he has simply the best teacher, well done on an excellent job. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Well done guys. Fascinating to watch from beginning to end result. So much work to shape a straight strip of metal into a horse’ shoe. And keeping the horse calm at the same time. Tom is a good learner and you Sam is a great teacher. Fabulous teamwork.
There are no winners or losers here just teacher and student. Tom never put yourself down, it takes time to reach perfection but we are always learning. I have been in your situation before as apprentice, I’m retired now but spent the best part of my career as a welder from fabrication to working on heavy machinery and finished off working for a waste management company on their vehicles and equipment here in the Uk. Before I retired Tom I was still learning. You are a natural in this line of work, and you worked hard to get where you are today, I’ve worked with metal most of my life, and I don’t think I could make a shoe from scratch. Keep your head up you are an amazing young man with amazing talent 😊
I see a winner crystal clear: the beautiful horse 🥰 Your craft is an art and it is fascinating to watch you. I am incredibly impressed and congratulate every horse owner whose horse you and Tom take care of. 😍 Many greetings and the greatest respect from Germany 🙋🏼♀️🇩🇪❤
I don't have a horse, and I don't know anything about horses or shoeing horses. But this is so interesting. It's a trade I knew existed but had no idea of what it involved, or that it was such hard work. It looks so hard on your back. Thanks for explaining everything you're doing.
Sam makes me want to buy a colt, and stables and move to Yorkshire. I love how he explains his craft and how much the horses he works with love him and even the ones that don't like it as much he still is a consummate professional and furthermore I love how Tom holds his own whist learning. I could watch these videos all day. I recon I'll convince my bro to get a horse for his daughters they live in Wakefield lol
Omg it’s complicated and so much skill involved so appreciate how skilled this job is amazing even so you how do you even work that day with bad back! Dedication to your clients and the horses well done guys. Love that you say “you’re gonna leather Tom” proper Northern saying ! X😂
I’ve had horses for 40 yrs (oh my Christ where did that time go!!) and my old farrier always used to shoe hot but he always had a tonne of pre made shoes in the van so I’ve NEVER seen a shoe made! Thank you, being a good farrier really is an art and a craft which you’ve definitely got! 👍🏻 Oh and go and see a physio for that back ASAP! This is coming from someone who’s had 3 disks removed and 4 vertebrae fused together all because I DIDN’T get treatment years ago.
It is a pleasure to watch you at your craft and to be educated about every aspect of it. You take great pride in your profession. I think you and Tom are both winners at the end of the day. Thanks for sharing all your content.
Undoubtedly Sam,,..Sir, you are a good mentor n surely so Tom is just equally a good student learning from you to be a fine farrier! 👍🐎👍 However, in realisation that accident or injury may or not to occur but nevertheless do take care during the job demonstration! Enjoying all the time in the shared video clip from UTube! Living in a city nation of Singapore, we wouldn't have such opportunity to see or feel the horses. My opinion about horses, is that it is a very fine n gentle animal! In ancient time long ago, the horses were needed as much in travelling places in real sense! Like watching the video of farrier at work on the horse n shoe as such! Stay safe!😊
Hi, gorgeous! Don’t worry I’m old enough to be your mom! Lol 😅 Just wondering what country are you in? I’ve been following you and I can’t believe the compassion, gentleness, and over the hill treatment u give to these horses. It’s just unbelievable!!! You have a God-given talent. Much love from New York-USA😇❤️
Yes he is Gorgeous! I to am old enough to be his mum, wishing I were 30 years younger 💔Fantastic with the horses, never miss a Video or short. God bless From Western Australia ♥️⭐️💛💫
Fabulous video! It was like getting a six-week artisan horseshoe making seminar in fifty minutes! I’ll definitely be watching this video more than once. You said it yourself, Sam. “It’s a beautiful art.” I came to your videos with a head full of ignorance about what a farrier has to do and needs to know. Nothing has even come close to surprising me as much as the fact that some do and some don’t when it comes to making shoes. I would’ve guessed it was a lost art following the Industrial Revolution. I don’t know what impresses me more, what you’re doing with your tools or what’s going on in your mind, relative to the horse you’re shoeing, as you make each specific shoe. I know the two have to work together. Thank you, so much, for taking the time to make this video!
I completely agree with all you said! I had no idea! So impressed! Also, Sam's skills: 1) knowledge, 2) horse skills, 3) craft/trade skills and as a master/teacher 4) people skills!
Really enjoyed this video. Strangely enough I found the video to be quite relaxing. 🤣🤣Well done Sam for being such a great teacher for Tom, and well done Tom for doing a wonderful job.
Love this video! The hoof balm you use really puts the "icing on the cake"! Beautiful! I'm taking this phrase from another RUclipsr, "You win or you Learn" and Tom is learning very well from your apprenticeship! Tom should keep all his shoes so he can see the progression of his craftsmanship. Well done attempt, Tom! Sam, I know you said you were taking your time to explain to your viewers (thanks for that), but in general how long does it take to shoe 4 hooves?
Wow, Horseshoeing is such an art that you do so well. thank you for sharing this very informative video. I have to say that Tom did a great job, but the winner is clearly you.
I always enjoy watching your videos. You are a genius at what you do. I was really impressed with your helper on this one. Obviously you have taught him well because I thought he did an awesome job! Keep up the good work guys!
Wow.. Never having been around horses, my ignorance knew no bounds. So fascinating. You clearly love what you do Sam. What makes you special is the need to improve and know more. That is what makes someone a true professional. Thanks so much for making this video even with your dodgy back. I hope you know a good chiropractor who is a miracle workers. Tom you are a scaly wag at heart 😏
Excellent work Tom! The only feedback I would give (from a person who knows absolutely nothing about forging a shoe) is to slow down and try not to rush but what a temendous upcoming talent you are! Love to see you learning and growing in confidence.
I love watching Sam make up shoes from scratch. I don't know if any of the farriers I've used made their own or that started with pre-made blanks, but that is a huge amount of work. Have a great day. 🐞
There's an amish farrier in Ohio farmers bring to his barn for nervous horses. It appears they are just skittish, and this farrier calms them instantly. Quite amazing to witness
You’re missing one last step in the shoe-making process, Sam. You need to have someone design a very distinctive “SW”identifying brand that you can hammer into each shoe. Every artist should claim his work! Now, take it a step further. When those shoes come off, they still have marketing value. How many thousand RUclips, Instagram and Facebook followers do you have now, Sam? How many of them do you think would gladly purchase an authentic “Sam Wolfendem” horseshoe to hang somewhere in their home? Quite a few, I suspect. Too much work to box them up and post? That’s what a loyal apprentice can do on his day off if he’s promised a slice of the pie. Imagine a winter holiday on the beach in Tahiti, all paid for with used horseshoe money!
Salut, Sam!

Tom watching you work on the shoes showed how much you have already learned and how much you are driven to learn. Well done!! Samuel, hope your back is better. It make perfect sense why you workout so much. Keeping your body healthy to do the wonderful work that you do.
You've got amazing content to watch man. Your video style is so easy to watch, even after I just got done building 3 sets of 3/4 fullered shoes for tomorrow's work haha. Great job explaining and Tom's shoes look great and fit up very nicely. Nice nail line and all, you fellas are skilled! Keep it up!!

It's quite a big job, so nice to see it done properly and by such a nice person. I've had a sore back all of my life from horse riding accidents so I emphasise with Samuel having a sore back and bending over to shoe horses. He's so good looking, he could be a male model. Tom did really good but of course you can't beat experience over a lot of years that makes the job faster.
Sam ..... Winner. Tom does great work too..... He has a mentor that clearly knows how to treat his apprentice..... Sam.... Is of course a : Q T pye....... 😉
Awesome! I learned so much watching this! Thank you for taking the time to explain not only what you are doing, but also why you are doing it. I learned more nomenclature of the tools that you use, but also the anatomy of the horses foot. I did not know that Fresians feet are shaped so differently. I always learn something new in your videos. Now I feel like I need to read up on the history of farriery. Many thousand thanks!

Just discovered your channel; very interesting!!! I'm learning all about shoeing and love seeing all the beautiful horses. Both of you young men work so hard; the owners of those horses must certainly appreciate everything you do. Best wishes and continued success. from southeastern Arizona, USA
I'd say you're one of the best farriers in the world!! I give praise to you guys because it's a hard on the body job! I used to trim my own horses for a few years and OMG my back would kill me for 2 weeks every time. I probably shouldn't have trimmed all 5 horses in one day 😂.
Well done! Best video yet! Watching the process A-Z is brilliant. You're a master! Tom is a great apprentice, and Billy was so good and patient. Lucky clients you have! Also, as a musician, the hammer rhythms have a musicality to them and I find myself anticipating the in-between taps, do you hear what I mean?
Thank you Sam, what a great job you do, amazing to see and such a complex task. What a great result, very informative. Tom is coming on well by the look of it.Keep up the good work.Looking forward to the next video.

Hi Lisa, thank you so much for watching means so much to
Me! I do make a few things from metal here and there hanging baskets wine racks etc iv never made any gates though😅 I mainly just make horseshoes to shoe horses with that’s my bred and butter since I’m a farrier the other type of metal
Work is more a blacksmith thing.
So pleasing in this day and age to see a young man have such high standards and work ethics. Your parents should be proud Tom. Awesome job!
This Friesian is one of my favorite horses you have for clients, Sam!🤩🥳💜🤩😎👍
Sam may I ask, you’ve said in videos before that they feel with the sole of their hooves. So when you’re cutting down the sole they must feel that? Clearly it isn’t hurting them or you’d know about it 😂 but you’d think it would do with that being the part of the hoof they feel? Just interested. Yet Another great video. Please keep them coming. Especially these longer ones! And also more of the gym content when you can whenever your back is better ☺️
Can’t tell you how much I am enjoying your content.
Can we maybe meet your Dad one day too? Only if he’s up for it of
Course!
Sending love from Scottish Highlands 🏴💕
(We love the northerners here in Scotland) 😊
Hi Ashleigh,
My understanding of the sole of the hoof is that it's similar to a callous - the surface is tough and generally doesn't feel pain.
I’m not a horsesie person . But for some reason I keep coming back to this channel! 😊
"It's not as easy as it looks." Well, I'll say! Understatement of the century. Incredible work you two!
I see a winner crystal clear: the beautiful horse 🥰
Your craft is an art and it is fascinating to watch you. I am incredibly impressed and congratulate every horse owner whose horse you and Tom take care of. 😍
Many greetings and the greatest respect from Germany 🙋🏼♀️🇩🇪❤
Amazing!! You both have a fantastic relationship and the care you have for the horses is a pleasure to watch 😊
Hi Lynsey, yeh it’s so important to be kind to the horse and have a good relationship with them. Thanks for watching 😊
Fascinating! Beautiful work. And well done, Tom 😊
Thank you 😊
I’ve had horses for 40 yrs (oh my Christ where did that time go!!) and my old farrier always used to shoe hot but he always had a tonne of pre made shoes in the van so I’ve NEVER seen a shoe made! Thank you, being a good farrier really is an art and a craft which you’ve definitely got! 👍🏻
Oh and go and see a physio for that back ASAP!
However, in realisation that accident or injury may or not to occur but nevertheless do take care during the job demonstration!
Stay safe!😊
The horse stood still for young Tom a bit more it looked... 😊 Nice to this ancient art being passed down ❤❤
The skill involved is incredible 👏!
That is a real artwork. 👏👏👏
Spending all day with horses... What a magickal life ✨️
Hi, gorgeous!
They're in Yorkshire 🇬🇧
Yes he is Gorgeous! I to am old enough to be his mum, wishing I were 30 years younger 💔Fantastic with the horses, never miss a Video or short. God bless From Western Australia ♥️⭐️💛💫
@@margaretshipway451 My son is in Perth at the moment. He's been in Australia for 15 months and in Perth for the last two. He's liking it there.
Master with the best horseshoe…Sam. Apprentice with the best horseshoe…Tom. Winner…the horse! Who now feels so comfortable. Great vid guys. 🎉❤
I really love how you continue to talk to the horses the whole time that you work with them. You have a really beautiful soul.
Wow that is a ton of work! You are a true Master! Love to see a Master at work!😁
Watching Tom forge, it is evident he pays close attention to your methods and teachings. These videos are so interesting to me. Thank you!
OMG THIS IS AMAZING!!!
Very much is an Art!!!!
Soo talented!! Soo Skilled!!!
True pleasure to watch!!
6:10-6:20 Love how Tom tricks Sam when handing him the ruler. Good one Tom!😂
Toms work was blooming good but your finesse is what stands out but that’s down to experience
Keep it up Tom
Fantastic Sam.I'd say you won but Tom is catching up with you. Shows what a good teacher you are! 😊
Excellent work Tom! The only feedback I would give (from a person who knows absolutely nothing about forging a shoe) is to slow down and try not to rush but what a temendous upcoming talent you are! Love to see you learning and growing in confidence.
Learning from the best, makes you the best beautiful work. Very sculptural.
I didnt think people did this kind of thing anymore . Its really interesting . Thanks for sharing
@richardduncan6946 Wow, I can't believe no one has thought of this before. Sam, you should listen to this man your nuts if you don't.
A wonderful idea! I'd buy one ... or more ...
I want one too. 🪭
Salut, Sam! Am dat întâmplător peste videoclipurile tale... Mi-am zis: hai să văd.
Ce să zic!?Am rămas impresionată cu câtă dexteritate și plăcere lucrezi, dar mai mult apreciez blândețea cu care te porți față de cai. 🤗❤
Dumnezeu să te binecuvânteze!
Rămâi așa
This video was oddly relaxing… Probably the regular “tap tap tap” of the hammer and other tools. I loved it!
Absolutely fantastic to watch and listen and learn from. Thank you so much for sharing your skills and knowledge with us.
Learned a lot watching this video. His Horse Shoes are a work of art. Perfection for the horses feet. So much skill goes into making them. I’d definitely would buy a
Couple of these with these worn she’s made by Sam for my wall for conversation
pieces for guests to see.
Hi guys! Thanks for the video!! Love these! I work long hours and love coming in and watching your adventures showing!! Sending love, peace and best wishes from Santa Barbara, California!!!♥️🐴🙋♀️☮️🕉️‼️
You’re both winners!! Great job
Sam.... Is of course a :
Q T pye.......
😉
So skilled, a wonderful craftsman. Young men are needed to keep this skill going for the future. 😊
I'm not a horse person but this was fascinating to watch.
This is a terrific video! Very enjoyable and informative. You guys are natural entertainers!
They don't make 'em like you in America! I absolutely love the way you show affection towards the animals. That's says so much about you as a person. 😊
That wig could do with a few curlers.😂😂 it amazes me how tolerant the horses are with feet up on stands. Thank you for showing these skills👏👏👏👍👍
On ne peut-être qu adnirative en voyant votre travail d une tres grande qualité. Ce jeune a beaucoup de chance d apprendre ce métier difficile avec vous et l approche avec les chevaux est calme et douce. Merci pour ces videos
You guys are the dream team. Thank you for sharing.🐴
You both did a beautiful job and so good and gentle with the horses 🐎 patience as well 👏
That is some work.. What a trade..
Just discovered your channel; very interesting!!! I'm learning all about shoeing and love seeing all the beautiful horses. Both of you young men work so hard; the owners of those horses must certainly appreciate everything you do.
Best wishes and continued success.
from southeastern Arizona, USA
I think your apprentice did a petty good job. With you teaching him.
The horse must feel SOO much better after this. It is very interesting. Not a job for just anyone. 💪
You are awesome‼️A little bit worried about your hearing and back, what an immencely hard job‼️🏆👏👏👏
As I watched you make this horse shoe from scratch, every part you did and describe to us in detail , it is perfection in its making , so impressed ❤❤
Such a beautiful craft! I'm amazed you can keep the hoof mapping straight in your mind's eye when forging front and back shoes at the same time.
I missed your live today, Sam. Your work is a masterpiece, on the shoes. It really is very interesting ❤
That was so interesting and well done Tom, Sam taught you well 😊
Amazing to watch you two shoe this beautiful horse from scratch
A job well done guys
Thanks!
thank you so much!!
Good job young man! And congrats to the master 👍
This man is awesome both with his craft as well as the horses. Hopefully his apprentice turns out the same way
A treat to watch art in the making. The two of you are a great team. 🙂
Definitely an art making shoes and a science to help correct hoof issues, hard work. You two make a great team, enjoy you videos, just found your channel.
It's nice to see people teaching younger that's whut we are supposed to do good man
Fascinating!
You are an artist.
I can see it in transference of the knowledge to your medium while looking errorless.
Thank you.
Love watching you take care of these horse with so much love and respect.
Sam you need to take care of that back, massage and chiropractor might be in order regularly. Love to you both❤️
