i would say I have found that to be the case in Montana, South Dakota, Iowa, Virginia and those drivers that lost their license riding on scooters on sidewalks in downtown Denver ... i think the only time people ever attempt to drive lawfully is at their test at the DMV that first time. Many folks are terrified at the notion of taking the test again for a good reason.. they don't know how to drive according to the rules of the road.

I watched this video when our family was deciding if we were going to relocate to Springfield. We ultimately decided that we would, but before we made that decision, we went to visit. I cannot speak to all of the items in her video because we do not live there yet, but I do want to clarify that there are better grocery stores than this video conveys. There is an amazing Aldi, much nicer than the one we currently go to, as well as a very fancy Hy-Vee. Walmart is not your only option. And because Springfield is relatively small, the drive to one of those two stores would not be very far no matter where you live in Springfield. We have not moved yet, but we are excited to now, and I don’t feel like this video paints an accurate picture from what I have seen so far, which is not extensive, but I did find better groceries stores. We also found a lot of indoor play places for toddlers and I don’t think this video highlights that option for parents.

Thank you for your honest opinion. I grew up in this area and graduated from high school in Springfield. When I left here during my time in the navy, my cultural experiences were greatly expanded. It was in the early 1970's that I ended up in San Francico, taking a job with some doctors I had served with. California is a wonderful place. And like you, I cherish the diversity of different cultures and the variety of cuisines that are available. Upon becoming widowed, I returned back here to be close to my family who live around and work in Springfield. Presently I am residing in a rural area. But being elderly, my health is poor, my family want me to move into senior housing in Springfield. The downtown area used to be a very vibrant place with a lot of places to shop and eat. But I have heard that he crime there now is pretty high. It would be nice to find somewhere to be able to walk, shop, eat and have places for entertainment. Springfield has changed so much over the years. But so have I.

Im pulling your leg tho. This persepctive is common from people from larger cities and massive metro areas. People from more rural places think there are just as many cons. Realistically though if youve got a smart head on your shoulders and love a cheaper and more freedom embracing way of life, the midwest is for you. California has nothing that makes the cost of living there worth it.

IF you want diversity, and authentic foods, Drive about 5 hours to your North, and come to Kansas City. ;-) We have Trader Joes, and A True City atmosphere. World Class restaurants on the country club plaza and A Night life too. Springfield is where we send our Kids to college, that's why the grocery stores stock up on pizza rolls and hot pockets. LoL. As for your concern about the chiggers and ticks, just throw a flea and tick collar on them Yung uns, like a "special necklace". just Kidding, don't do that. Bad joke.. :-)
But, maybe you should know that You are pretty close to Branson MO and Table Rock Lake, for summer fun, such as Silver Dollar City and White Water park. Plenty of bumper boats and go carts and water slides too. Many Family music shows as well

You remind me of my sister. She began her family in the Bay Area of Cali. Her husband's family mostly lives in NC. They were about to move to Charlotte and she voiced a concern that there wouldn't be enough "diversity". You're a Cali liberal that didn't do your cultural research before going to a small city in a red state. I can simplify KS, MO, IA, NE and AR for anyone considering moving there. God, family, community and guns. If any of those words make you uncomfortable, stay on the coasts.

My wife and I moved from Sacramento to Springfield in November of 2002 because her sisters lived just to the south, in Hollister, just across from Branson, but we wanted to live in a larger city.
Her sisters assured us that while it does show in the wintertime, it's usually not more than an inch or so, like in a Christmas card. Two weeks after we arrived we got two and a half FEET of snow and had to break out the snow chains we used to get over the mountain passes in California.
California is a completely different world compared to most of the rest of the country. The Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and wet, cool winters is almost boring.
I've lived in a lot of places where they say, "If you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes. It'll change."
In Springfield, they MEAN it! Wikipedia says the Springfield area has the most changeable weather in the country.
I grew up in Illinois and Ohio, so I was no stranger to tornados, but the only person I ever knew who had actually suffered tornado damage was my wife in the Central Valley, and the only time I've ever actually seen a funnel cloud was over I-5 in Sacramento, so no place is immune from tornadoes.
But Springfield is deep in what's known as Tornado Alley and they seem to come right up out of Texas and Oklahoma toward us. Only once was the warning severe enough that we went down to the basement. At that time we learned that a tornado passed at treetop level down the street behind us.
There was a severe tornado that struck Joplin, just a few miles away, in 2011 that devastated part of the city.
We lived in a small house on the northwest side of town, the very most rural urban area I've ever lived in.
Sidewalks and curbs are a sometimes thing, less common than ditches..
It's wonderful if you're really looking for a small town vibe.
The third largest city in the state, Springfield has a population of more than 350,000 people, but they like to think of themselves as living in Mayberry.
The closest thing we've found to California-style Mexican food was at Cielito Linda. It's nothing fancy, but it's familiar. We enjoyed the Chinese food at the Panda Express in northeast Springfield near Glenstone and 44.
The owner there told us they were proud to be the only Chinese run Chinese restaurant in Springfield.
Now, there are Chinese restaurants all over Springfield, but we're told they're all run by Vietnamese. That's why you're more likely to get spring rolls instead of egg rolls.
We kept seeing new buildings going up. My wife hoped they would be new stores, but they were usually just more places to eat.
My wife was regularly writing to Trader Joe's to open a store in Springfield. She touted the several colleges and universities in town that might provide a somewhat more hi-brow clientele. They have a store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and one in St. Louis, Springfield is right between them. No luck.
Costco is in Kansas City and St. Louis, both more than a hundred miles away. We had to make do with Sam's Club and the many, many Walmarts. There's one Target. And grocery stores that are NOT Walmart are few and far between.
Aldi is pretty good, and the nearby Food4Less has good prices. If you're looking for the good Kroger brands, there's Dillons. And Price Cutter is the local chain in competition with Walmart.
We did find that the people were quite friendly, to the point of being nosey. I noted that New Yorkers seemed to be hard as nails, if you can get beneath the surface, they've got a heart gold. Beneath that overly friendly Ozark exterior was a heart of stone.
In January of 2006 we suffered a severe ice storm that knocked out power city-wide for two weeks.
That's when I learned that we didn't have a mayor (he apparently skipped out to Branson for the duration) and our city manager was the head of Springfield Utilities, the city-owned-and-operated utility company, who was the only person in authority who was giving us updates (our "real" city manager was apparently hiding out with the mayor).
Fortunately we had a gas water heater and a gas stove and were able to keep the house over forty degrees inside while it was still below zero outside. Electricity is expensive there, but natural gas is cheap.
Actually, gasoline is usually below the national average because of our proximity to the refineries.
Yeah, food is generally more expensive than on the west coast, but overall the cost of living is considerably lower. That also means that the prevailing wages are lower. That's why the company I worked for moved to Springfield in the first place.
There are fewer murders and major assaults in Springfield, more property crimes and crimes of opportunity.
Just after we moved there, there was a rash of car thefts when people would go out in the winter to start their car in their driveway to warm it upon and then go back inside for another cup of coffee.
If someone is actually going to harm you, it's probably someone you know.
We were surprised to find that our car insurance was higher in Springfield than it was when we lived in what was colloquially known as the "Deepest Part of Hell" in Sacramento. They explained that people tend to tailgate a lot more here. Most of the traffic deaths I heard about were on the roads between Springfield and the Branson area when someone would drift across the center line and crash head-on into opposing traffic.
When we first moved there, seatbelts were mostly just a suggestion. When they had to make it a law or lose federal highway funding, there was a tremendous uproar. Texting while driving is NOT uncommon.
I tried riding my bike to work for a while. "Share the road" is the law here, but I found that here it's honored more in the breech than in practice. It's legal to ride your bike on the sidewalk outside of business areas and they really expect you to do that --- assuming you can even find a sidewalk. After a while it was just not worth it trying to ride alongside drivers who had been raised on Nascar.
There really are a lot of great things about living in the Ozarks (the only mountain range you actually drive down into), but it is a very different kind of place. You cannot plow this land. You hit limestone below just a couple of inches.
It's good for raising cattle, not crops.
The locals call it "Sprangfield (and Brainson)," but they still pronounce Missouri "Missouri."
There are a lot of other fun "different" pronunciations of otherwise familiar names there.
My wife and I were ready to move after two weeks but we had spent all our money and were stuck. We called it Misery.
I wondered why the locals were so anti-tax, but then I learned about the property tax (you have to bring proof of payment when you renew your license every year) and all the other little taxes they are hit with.
On the other hand they will almost always vote for tax levies to improve the roads and the libraries. They love their libraries. The libraries are one of the high points in Springfield.
A coworker of mine who had come from Beaverton, in the Portland area of Oregon, complained of the lack of "culture." But many national entertainer tours occasionally pass through the MSU campus. And as they joked on "Glee," there's always Branson!
My wife's health failed and she died there. I left after fourteen years to help take care of my dying mother because the only thing that was keeping me there was the job I kept to provide my wife's health insurance.
Missouri used to be considered a political "bellwether" state. "As Missouri goes, so goes the nation," I used to hear. But that all changed after they elected that (Black man) for president. We saw plenty of blatant racism, and even a Klan rally near the local grocery store. They're just not our kind of people.
Yes, your home-buying money can go a whole lot further here, but if you going for one of those McMansions shown ay the beginning and end of the video, I hope you're happy in it, because there really aren't a whole lot of things to go out for very often.

Springfield has never ever had anywhere close to 2 1/2 feet of snow. Not even northern Missouri gets anywhere near that much. The all time record is 18 inches and that happened over a hundred years ago. Since then it’s never been close to that. An average snowfall in Springfield is about an inch on the rare occasions when it actually happens.

I also lived in tornado alley (in another state) for almost 40 years & I was in warnings but still have yet to see 1 in person. Lack of diversity? You moved to a city in the midwest/ozark area & are trying to compare it to California...duh. Bugs...yeah. Its called being outside. Ive lived in bigger cities with higher crime rates. Mind your business, stay out of certain areas, lock your car doors & be aware of your surroundings & you greatly reduce your chance of being a victim. Of course airfare is higher. Especially compared to KC or StL. Smaller city=less options. The propety tax is really the only con listed & Im thinking thats probably a state law not a city law.

My father was in the military (long time ago, like before Korean War), and he always talked about tics and jiggers at Fort Bragg like they were the worst thing in the world.
He said the same thing. The men would use cigarettes to help each other burn them out.
      Nasty stuff.
He said training in Germany was heaven compared to Ft Bragg. The German "wild" forests were like someone's personal property, the way they were maintained and cared for.
The ground was soft and the bugs were friendly and curteous.

Military brat here that has lived everywhere. While ice is more of an issue then snow it’s minimal compared to Colorado and not every summer is humid. Tornadoes are over emphasized and you should review the class as most are EF1-EF2
This is a very biased and not entirely accurate review clearly you have not been here long and should have considered interviewing some more knowledgeable local people instead of the internet 😂. Clearly you don’t know much about your home state either… some of what you mentioned is there too. This is the most over dramatic and inaccurate review…. Make sure to do your own research peeps.
Find yourselves a professional local and far more honest realtor.

About the crime? Stay out of the trailer parks. Most of our crime here was simple possession until legalization. This is August of 2023 and we are developing a problem with black gangs from StL and KC dukin it out here. Other than that, we have a large homeless population so property crimes are high.
The good news is that if you spend over 100k for a house, you won't be near the homeless encampments.
The speaker is probly not allowed to say, but we have a government so corrupt that Huey Long would be proud. In addition Springfield Public Schools suffers the same amount of malfeasance. As a result, the labor force here sucks.
Are you a renovator who doesn't mind the bullets whizzing past? This Burg suffers an extreme shortage of low income housing. Investor heaven for an owner-occupant. You can get something with the utilities on for 35 to 50k.
There's always a job here for someone honest who Wants to work. We are short of top end trades people. But if you are a gypsy, expect to be treated accordingly.
