Lived in Springfield for 30 years and moved to republic in 2017 and wished i would have made that move sooner! Enjoyed the republic community! But had to move in 2022 back home to ohio , one con in springfield are the wages i held down two jobs with being married and was shocked when getting here how i was being offered 4 dollars plus more than what i was working for in Springfield on a University Campus! I was never a fan of Springfield itself and the crime rate per capita compared to St louis is top five!

I watched this video when our family was deciding if we were going to relocate to Springfield. We ultimately decided that we would, but before we made that decision, we went to visit. I cannot speak to all of the items in her video because we do not live there yet, but I do want to clarify that there are better grocery stores than this video conveys. There is an amazing Aldi, much nicer than the one we currently go to, as well as a very fancy Hy-Vee. Walmart is not your only option. And because Springfield is relatively small, the drive to one of those two stores would not be very far no matter where you live in Springfield. We have not moved yet, but we are excited to now, and I don’t feel like this video paints an accurate picture from what I have seen so far, which is not extensive, but I did find better groceries stores. We also found a lot of indoor play places for toddlers and I don’t think this video highlights that option for parents.

I live north of Springfield but go there often. Everything you say is true . Walmart is definitely not the only option. What I like about Springfield is it feels smaller than it is . Now Springfield does have a high crime rate, but I think that is only in certain areas

My wife and I moved from Sacramento to Springfield in November of 2002 because her sisters lived just to the south, in Hollister, just across from Branson, but we wanted to live in a larger city. Her sisters assured us that while it does show in the wintertime, it's usually not more than an inch or so, like in a Christmas card. Two weeks after we arrived we got two and a half FEET of snow and had to break out the snow chains we used to get over the mountain passes in California. California is a completely different world compared to most of the rest of the country. The Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and wet, cool winters is almost boring. I've lived in a lot of places where they say, "If you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes. It'll change." In Springfield, they MEAN it! Wikipedia says the Springfield area has the most changeable weather in the country. I grew up in Illinois and Ohio, so I was no stranger to tornados, but the only person I ever knew who had actually suffered tornado damage was my wife in the Central Valley, and the only time I've ever actually seen a funnel cloud was over I-5 in Sacramento, so no place is immune from tornadoes. But Springfield is deep in what's known as Tornado Alley and they seem to come right up out of Texas and Oklahoma toward us. Only once was the warning severe enough that we went down to the basement. At that time we learned that a tornado passed at treetop level down the street behind us. There was a severe tornado that struck Joplin, just a few miles away, in 2011 that devastated part of the city. We lived in a small house on the northwest side of town, the very most rural urban area I've ever lived in. Sidewalks and curbs are a sometimes thing, less common than ditches.. It's wonderful if you're really looking for a small town vibe. The third largest city in the state, Springfield has a population of more than 350,000 people, but they like to think of themselves as living in Mayberry. The closest thing we've found to California-style Mexican food was at Cielito Linda. It's nothing fancy, but it's familiar. We enjoyed the Chinese food at the Panda Express in northeast Springfield near Glenstone and 44. The owner there told us they were proud to be the only Chinese run Chinese restaurant in Springfield. Now, there are Chinese restaurants all over Springfield, but we're told they're all run by Vietnamese. That's why you're more likely to get spring rolls instead of egg rolls. We kept seeing new buildings going up. My wife hoped they would be new stores, but they were usually just more places to eat. My wife was regularly writing to Trader Joe's to open a store in Springfield. She touted the several colleges and universities in town that might provide a somewhat more hi-brow clientele. They have a store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and one in St. Louis, Springfield is right between them. No luck. Costco is in Kansas City and St. Louis, both more than a hundred miles away. We had to make do with Sam's Club and the many, many Walmarts. There's one Target. And grocery stores that are NOT Walmart are few and far between. Aldi is pretty good, and the nearby Food4Less has good prices. If you're looking for the good Kroger brands, there's Dillons. And Price Cutter is the local chain in competition with Walmart. We did find that the people were quite friendly, to the point of being nosey. I noted that New Yorkers seemed to be hard as nails, if you can get beneath the surface, they've got a heart gold. Beneath that overly friendly Ozark exterior was a heart of stone. In January of 2006 we suffered a severe ice storm that knocked out power city-wide for two weeks. That's when I learned that we didn't have a mayor (he apparently skipped out to Branson for the duration) and our city manager was the head of Springfield Utilities, the city-owned-and-operated utility company, who was the only person in authority who was giving us updates (our "real" city manager was apparently hiding out with the mayor). Fortunately we had a gas water heater and a gas stove and were able to keep the house over forty degrees inside while it was still below zero outside. Electricity is expensive there, but natural gas is cheap. Actually, gasoline is usually below the national average because of our proximity to the refineries. Yeah, food is generally more expensive than on the west coast, but overall the cost of living is considerably lower. That also means that the prevailing wages are lower. That's why the company I worked for moved to Springfield in the first place. There are fewer murders and major assaults in Springfield, more property crimes and crimes of opportunity. Just after we moved there, there was a rash of car thefts when people would go out in the winter to start their car in their driveway to warm it upon and then go back inside for another cup of coffee. If someone is actually going to harm you, it's probably someone you know. We were surprised to find that our car insurance was higher in Springfield than it was when we lived in what was colloquially known as the "Deepest Part of Hell" in Sacramento. They explained that people tend to tailgate a lot more here. Most of the traffic deaths I heard about were on the roads between Springfield and the Branson area when someone would drift across the center line and crash head-on into opposing traffic. When we first moved there, seatbelts were mostly just a suggestion. When they had to make it a law or lose federal highway funding, there was a tremendous uproar. Texting while driving is NOT uncommon. I tried riding my bike to work for a while. "Share the road" is the law here, but I found that here it's honored more in the breech than in practice. It's legal to ride your bike on the sidewalk outside of business areas and they really expect you to do that --- assuming you can even find a sidewalk. After a while it was just not worth it trying to ride alongside drivers who had been raised on Nascar. There really are a lot of great things about living in the Ozarks (the only mountain range you actually drive down into), but it is a very different kind of place. You cannot plow this land. You hit limestone below just a couple of inches. It's good for raising cattle, not crops. The locals call it "Sprangfield (and Brainson)," but they still pronounce Missouri "Missouri." There are a lot of other fun "different" pronunciations of otherwise familiar names there. My wife and I were ready to move after two weeks but we had spent all our money and were stuck. We called it Misery. I wondered why the locals were so anti-tax, but then I learned about the property tax (you have to bring proof of payment when you renew your license every year) and all the other little taxes they are hit with. On the other hand they will almost always vote for tax levies to improve the roads and the libraries. They love their libraries. The libraries are one of the high points in Springfield. A coworker of mine who had come from Beaverton, in the Portland area of Oregon, complained of the lack of "culture." But many national entertainer tours occasionally pass through the MSU campus. And as they joked on "Glee," there's always Branson! My wife's health failed and she died there. I left after fourteen years to help take care of my dying mother because the only thing that was keeping me there was the job I kept to provide my wife's health insurance. Missouri used to be considered a political "bellwether" state. "As Missouri goes, so goes the nation," I used to hear. But that all changed after they elected that (Black man) for president. We saw plenty of blatant racism, and even a Klan rally near the local grocery store. They're just not our kind of people. Yes, your home-buying money can go a whole lot further here, but if you going for one of those McMansions shown ay the beginning and end of the video, I hope you're happy in it, because there really aren't a whole lot of things to go out for very often.

Springfield has never ever had anywhere close to 2 1/2 feet of snow. Not even northern Missouri gets anywhere near that much. The all time record is 18 inches and that happened over a hundred years ago. Since then it’s never been close to that. An average snowfall in Springfield is about an inch on the rare occasions when it actually happens.

Moved from Illinois here, NW suburbs not far from Chicago. Family of 5. Some observations you might find useful: We bought a house via FHA in May 2023. It was a 4 bedroom 3 bath (Technically could be 6 bedrooms) for 230k and includes a large unfinished basement and an old school brick garage. The house is very old. It's not far from the downtown, so we are pretty close to alot of amenities. It was a flipper, but was a small family business that did it - and did pretty well. Honestly, we wouldnt have gotten anything remotely close to the size we got (2100 sq feet) for the price and location almost anywhere else. Property taxes are shockingly low. We had a condo in Illinois and it was around 2500 a year. Here its actually under 1200 for the year. For what we pay in property taxes, are very impressed with what we get for it. It's definitely a grass is greener sort of thing, though coming from Illinois high property taxes for what you get, I'm still shocked by how much we get here for what we pay. (School quality I dont think is that much worse in the Springfield area, but is heavily dependent on what school your kids go to in SPS.) Private Mortgage insurance is also very key: It was pretty affordable. (Around 1800 for the year.) I wish it was cheaper, but compared to other states where natural disasters have hit hard, I've heard of PMIs being between 4-10k a year - which can absolutely devastate someone financially. That seems to be true of anywhere from Texas and California to Florida and Louisiana. This is an important aspect I dont think potential homeowners always consider. (Hopefully this remains true after all the Tornadoes in SW MO in the last month or two.) Utilities are often cheaper, but the summer here can hike your electric bill. Car insurance is up everywhere, but was still cheaper here than it was in Illinois. Cell phone bill is a tad bit cheaper and gas is around 30-40 cents cheaper at least because of the gas tax not being a thing in MO. Personal property tax can sneak up on people. If you have an older vehicle, its gonna be more bearable. I think a 2015 vehicle for instance will run you about 240$ per year or so. Available housing: I see alot of move-in ready houses for easily around 150-300k in Springfield. You may want to update the awful 50s or 70s looks and interior, but they will pass FHA inspection which is the main issue for any potential fixer-upers or houses that need work. Some of those cheaper houses are on the north side, but some are also in decent pockets of the North side of Springfield. I saw some houses near me that were a phenomenal price for the sq footage and being move-in ready in my neighborhood recently.

This video should be titled "white lady from cali hot takes a state different from california" 😂 . Im pulling your leg tho. This persepctive is common from people from larger cities and massive metro areas. People from more rural places think there are just as many cons. Realistically though if youve got a smart head on your shoulders and love a cheaper and more freedom embracing way of life, the midwest is for you. California has nothing that makes the cost of living there worth it.
