this works for me too. also, since there's no local library near my place, I'm trying this thing where i go to a book sale store near me, look for anything that catches my attention and buy it without looking at reviews online so i'm not biased when i read it. then i read a chapter a day before i go to sleep. i'll compare my review to that of the others after i finish it.

As a librarian, thank you for your support of libraries! Overdrive/Libby and Hoopla are lovely resources. If it helps anyone to know, they work a bit differently. O/L are limited by the number of things you have checked out at any one time. You may have to be on a waiting list for items, because your library system can only lend out as many copies as it has bought licenses for. Each library system is going to have a different selection of books/audiobooks available, depending on what they’ve purchased. O/L also has magazines! Hoopla never has waitlists, but you are limited in how many checkouts you get per month. I’m not 100% sure on this, but I believe Hoopla’s selection is the same for all libraries. Both O/L and Hoopla allow you to watch/listen right from their websites if you don’t have a device to download their apps. Finally, it’s worth checking your local library, because they may be doing curbside pickup of physical materials as well (Mine does! Items are quarantined between borrows for safety).

most of the time downloading pdfs illegally is my only option and it's frustrating 🥺 a lot of books aren't translated in my native language and by the time they are (sometimes it takes years) i unintentionally see spoilers online 😭 libby and overdrive are not available for my country and books in english are ridiculously expensive. so i usually just can't help myself and i download it and if i like the book i eventually buy a physical copy when i get the chance. the things avid readers have to do 😔🤘🏻
also, what helps me with concentration for reading and studying is a youtube channel called Guild of Ambience! they have amazing 2-3 hours long sounds of a library, rain, storms, crackling fire, a forest, seaside town market, etc; i hope it can be of help 🥰 i found myself reading/studying for hours listening to these.

i completely understand but i would recommend downloading books in the EPub format! it's SO much better, you can customize font/font size, add highlighters, etc. i think iBooks supports epub but google docs don't, so i used an app called Moon+.
but the epub experience itself is a much more pleasant one. also! if you can't find a book in epub (it's not that hard don't worry) you can always convert pdf to epub, just google something like 'pdf to epub' and you'll what to do.
      hope it helps :)
i generally download my ebooks from z-lib.org, they have a massive archive.

I am so surprised how difficult and expensive it seems to be to buy books in some countries. I live in Germany and we have a foreign language book section in every bookstore and if you order books online you don't have to pay shipping (even if they have to have it shipped from another country before they can send it to you)😳

Lifehack: If you have an actual kindle (not the app but the device), you can keep reading the book past the Libby/Overdrive deadline as long as you don't "exit" the book after it was returned to the library (like, go to the "home page"). As long as you only stay on one book and don't leave it for the home page, you'll maintain access to it and can read it all the way through, but once you leave the book then the kindle will "refresh" and remove your access to it. I don't know if this works for other ereaders like the Nook (I read on a Kindle Oasis). Sorry if it's not 100% clear, let me know if you have any questions, but this has been a game changer for me because sometimes the Libby deadlines would give me so much anxiety and now I don't worry about it. :)

You got me into the Forest app last year and it's been soooo helpful to help me focus on reading because I'm also TERRIBLE for randomly picking up my phone when I'm reading!! 😒😒 I've still got a long way to go but it definitely was a really helpful tip so thank you! 😊💖

Hi, Cari! Greetings from Indonesia. Sadly, Libby and overdrive are not available in my country. Luckily we have alternatives: iPusnas (national digital library - it's free!) and Gramedia Digital (digital e-reader from a local publisher). They have a huge collection of books written/translated in Bahasa Indonesia. For English books, I usually use Scribd. They're all great in their own way.

I love the Forrest app! It makes me so happy to plant trees :)! I am pretty sure it is free except (for me) it cost 1.25$ for a premium which you only pay for once and you always have it. It's defiantly worth it for me. Also, the trees you showed are some of my favorites! :D :D

Axis 360 is amazing, too!!! It uses the same Library system as Overdrive and Libby, but I guess it's just like a place where if Overdrive doesn't have it available, then Axis might. (If that makes sense...) Anyways, your channel is so cool!

Hoopla is great if your library has it! There's no wait time to download books and you can instantly reborrow it if you don't finish, which is great for a slow reader like me.
Also another ebook store and e-reader option is Kobo (if you want to avoid Amazon). They often have $.99 books in their store that can be read on your desktop/tablet and their e-readers are really nice with the night shift/yellow backlight option on most, which I really enjoy.

Idk if this falls under your usual reading list, but I'd recommend The Street by Ann Petry. It was the first novel by a black American to sell more than a million copies. It is about a single black mother in the 1940s trying to raise her son and make a living in Harlem. It's definitely not a "feel good novel" but Petry's mesmerizing writing style is so relevant to today and her characters are so real that I bought myself a copy after reading it at the library.

As someone who reads English books (I'm bilingual), and currently living in Taiwan (the language system here is Chinese), I usually read ebooks by using Scribd. It's great cos I can read/listen to as many books that I want with a cheap affordable price. I would say it's like a library but you'd have to pay for membership kinda library.

    Growing up, my parents used to buy my brother and I a book once a month, even when money was tight. There are usually a great selection of books at cheaper prices ($1-$5) at Goodwill. I do have a Libby account with about four different library cards attached to it (;
To recover from a reading drought, I tend to reread one of my favorite books to get me back in the spirit of things. (Also, my memory kind of sucks, so I do reread some of my favorite books once every few years anyway.)
To find books, I go to the bookstore and read the backs of books in my favorite sections. If I find a book I think I’ll like, I take pics of the book cover so I can get them from the library at a later date.

Butttt in October/November I was determined to read again so I took up your recommendation of Six of Crows and GIRL we are back in motion. I am gonna read Crooked Kingdom now and then fully finish Paprika. 🤓 Thank you always for you recommendation and reading motivation Cari! You have a fan in me from Puerto Rico ✨📚

if you're in Brazil (and i think it can ship internationally too...?) there's a website called Estante Virtual, that has so many indie bookshops and second hand bookshops (sebos) from all over the country, you can look for specific books from any store, or browse any one stores catalog, it's great, it's cheap, it supports local stores and you can find books in many languages other than Portuguese, even if those are the vast majority

I feel the living abroad pain! I live in Japan and if I want to read a book in English, I either have to use an e-reader or pay for a book and cry over the shipping costs. There are some English book sections big book stores in Japan, but as I dont live in the city that's not happening.
I got a library card from home and check out things digitally :)
Though right now I try to focus on reading in Japanese. Thanks for this video, and appreciate you reminding is that reading isn't competitive!

I have trouble focusing/reading for a decent amount of time if it is too quiet at home. I usually prefer to read in cafes, so one thing I wanted to recommend for anyone who is like me is ASMR rooms! Since we can't go to cafes these days, turning on a cafe ASMR room on my tv and lighting a candle has really helped my reading time ^_^
Also, I can confirm - Kindle does have a desktop app ^_^

Another tip with Libby. I have two libraries in my area so I have two library card but I have a friend who lives in NY and she doesn’t use an iPad or EReader to read like I do. So I used her library card too! That’s way if a book isn’t available at my library it will almost always be available at hers. So I have three cards in Libby

6:14 I have a kindle paperwhite which unfortunately doesn't work with any of the library apps but I do usually get the free trial in the kindle shop and if I do like it I end up getting my books second hand online. There's been quite a few books I was eager to read but really really did not like their first chapter at all so that saved me bugs too.
I unfortunately moved away from my beloved library which saved me oh so much money and I read so much more then but now I have a pile of second hand books to get through which is fun as well. Not like I think I will get to read those 70+ books I haven't read/finished yet but I'm at book five for this year so fingers crossed!

I recently went from buying physical books to reading on my kindle. I find it really helps me read a lot more because I can read in low lighting, it only requires one hand to hold and it fits in every bag. I love physical books but I have loads on my shelves that I ended up not really liking, so it doesn’t even bring me joy to look at them. So for now, eBooks all the way.
Unfortunately, both Libby and Overdrive don’t work on kindle if your library is outside the US. I know they could save me so much money (and make me try books I wouldn’t normally read) but I just don’t enjoy reading on my phone :(

at least in my location, you can borrow books online from your library and they have curbside pickup and drop off if you have a hard time reading e-books or prefer a physical copy! i’d just check out your local library’s website and see if they have something similar set up
