    I recommend doing a re-read of 'If We Were Villains' if you're up to it! You'll find so many hints throughout which tell you the outcome of the book, and you only realise that it isnt just a throw away line, or a casual conversation topic, once you know the entire story. I get excited every time i do a re-read because of it (though that might be because its my favourite book 😅)

      the more that i think about it the more that I like it actually hahaha will definitely need to reread it! i really liked how the author didn't just drop the Shakespeare on us, but explained the words in a really understandable way :)

    This is How You Lose the Time War is definitely my favorite book I’ve read this year. It’s been several months and I still think about it all the time. My other absolute favorite of the year was A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor, the final book in Hank Green’s duology. For some reason that book made me cry a lot lol. I also just finished Into the Drowning Deep, which was so engaging and tense that I just flew through it haha

    What's your philosophy on "giving books a second chance?" (anyone can answer this, I am honestly curious!) Tere have been some books that I have had to start and stop a few times, Like all of the Erik Larson books (Devil in the White City took me 3 tries to start but I ended up loving it once it got going) but I have never really felt a great need to go back to books that I disliked or was disappointed by after reading it once. Is it something you do often, or how to you re-approach a book like that?

    • @caricanread
      @caricanread  3 года назад +22

      I definitely give most books a second chance because a lot of times its the writing style that stops me from getting into it and, sort of like taste buds, my taste for reading style changes with time!! If I really don't like the story though, then its harder for me to reread. But many of my fav books are ones that I couldn't get into on the first read so I'm always open^^ I put a lot of time between my rereads tho - sometimes years!!

    • @youandwhatarmy635
      @youandwhatarmy635 3 года назад +5

      This is an interesting question! I think for me, I would think about what the reason is that I didn't like a book. Like maybe I thought it was boring and now I have more patience, or I thought a character was annoying but now I've matured and realized that might not be the case. Something along those lines :)

    • @KP-wv2ww
      @KP-wv2ww 3 года назад +2

      That's such a good question! There's been quite a few times where I've tried reading a book and it just doesn't click with me, but when I read it a couple months or years later, it clicks and I end up enjoying it so much! In my opinion, as we grow as individuals and read more books, a book that we might not get the first time round, might just click the next time. So I do give some books a second chance :)

    • @maryap8821
      @maryap8821 3 года назад

      I usually give books a second chance if they're very well known classics (they probably deserve the hype!) or if the premise sounds really interesting and up my alley. We are constantly changing as humans and obviously as readers, so I find that sometimes I'm not in the right place to read a certain book and a couple months or years later that book becomes a favourite of mine (that happened to me with The Secret History)

    • @DeeRafatSweileh
      @DeeRafatSweileh 3 года назад

      It depends on many factors. But I usually try to give books a second chance.
      If it's the writing style then I'll probably not go back, because I've tried it before and it didn't work. 😅
      If I can't 'tolerate' the characters, if you know what I mean, I wouldn't go back either.
      I started a series once and the main character was unbeatable. I just couldn't vibe with her at all. My friend kept telling me she gets better by book 3!! I CAN NOT READ 3 BOOKS FOR ME TO GET TO LIKE A CHARACTER. 😂😂😂
      But it's rare for me to love a book I didn't like on the first try. I think I know what I like and I can kind of sense whether we'll be a good fit or not

  • @LunarKnight22
    @LunarKnight22 3 года назад +9

    I was confused by the Magpie Murders as well, but adored the book. Mr. Horowitz tells weird and interesting stories. On the flip side, I have no desire to read more than that book, as the idea of it only works once.

    • @caricanread
      @caricanread  3 года назад +1

      Yeah it was partially my fault for not reading the very first chapter but the interruption threw me! I wonder how he'll continue the series :)

    • @LunarKnight22
      @LunarKnight22 3 года назад

      I saw that there was another book out for the series, but I didn’t wanna pick it up.
      On the flipside, The Word is Murder was an amazing book and I have wanted to read the next one of that. If you do like detective style books, more in the line of noir and Philip Marlowe, you should check out the Last Smile In Sunder City it was, personally, an amazing book.

    17:00 it has the same effect on me too :D I actually went into a two months long reading slump just because I didn't like the romantic subplots at all. Picked it back up just to give it one last try when I was completely blown away by how much I loved James and Oliver, and then I got to the ending and it shook me to my core. Everytime I think about this book it gets way better and I think about it alot lol

    I got so worried when the first book you talked about was Uprooted because I really didn’t understand the hype behind it when I read, but was super relieved that we seemed to have very similar opinions of it! I’ve completely avoided Naomi Novik because of it so I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on Spinning Silver

    I remember, in I think 2020, when I first read "This is how you lose the time war" (also in one sitting) I then, right after finishing it, called a friend of mine just so I could go on a 1-hour rant about how much I loved this book and how emotional made me hahah
    and even though English is not my first language, it just made so much sense in my head. I felt like it was way easier to read than some popular YA books. It's the only book ever rated 6 out of 5 stars. My absolute fav and also the only book I can and want to reread without getting bored.
    HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it

    Naomi Novik has a new book coming out soon that you might like better! It's like a really dark, slightly cheeky, Harry Potter-esque story. I'm a bit biased because I work for the publishing company, but it's still such a fun story that I recommend :)

    I haven't read Uprooted but I loove Naomi Novik's Temeraire series. It's fantasy/alternative history set during the Napoleonic Wars, with dragons. Temeraire, the titular dragon, is my favorite dragon ever.

    Thank you for this lovely book video. I am reading the "A Court of Throns and Roses" series now, because you said it was amusing (in a previous video). I have only just started the second book, but I find they contain many lengthy and verbose descriptions of a slightly boring and irrelevant nature. But I love the female heroine. I love how "true love" is portrayed. I love how a 'change of heart' is permitted, and even desirable from the pov of the reader. Sometimes things move too slowly. But most expectations are paid off. Can't wait to finish these and dive into more of your recommendations :)

    • @caricanread
      @caricanread  3 года назад +1

      the books keep getting longer and longer, just a warning ;) but you're right, i thought that was pretty unique for a book to be able to make you fall in love and root for so many different characters!

    Naomi Novik is one of those authors where it seems like all the pieces should fit and work well to make a great book (story, writing style etc.) but somehow it just doesn’t do it for me. I felt like Spinning Silver was even worse 🤷‍♀️ I prefer Katherine Arden who I feel is going for something similar and actually pulls it off

    This is How You Loose the Time War sounds like a book that is going straight on top of my reading list, thanks ! Right now I am reading Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. I absolutely adored the movie The Hours (with Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman), which strongly references Mrs Dalloway. It is much more difficult on the language level than I thought (non native here ^^).. So I am reading it reaaally slowly but the text is so poetic and the emotions strong and tangible, yum. A good read for now, that will be followed by The Hours by Michael Cunningham, and then TIHYLTTW probably. Anyway, such a nice video full of nice autumny readings vibes uhuh

    I vastly preferred Spinning Silver to Uprooted - hopefully you will enjoy it better too.

      Oh, also - I originally read Uprooted because I was desperate for a Slavic fantasy hit after finishing the Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden. If you haven't read them I strongly, strongly recommend.

    I loved Uprooted! But I know it’s pretty divisive. With Sorcery of Thorns, I thought it was cute but I thought the romance was underdeveloped and she should have ended up with (spoilers!!) Silas or whatever his name was. They had a much stronger sense of bonding
