What I read in January 2021 | The Vanishing Half, Deadly Education, and more!
congrats on hitting 50k!! well deserved :) i thought the concept and world of a deadly education was super cool too! what were ur thoughts on Orion? i thought el's and his friendship was very endearing lol esp with how he clearly likes her but she's just like EW GET AWAY FROM ME !! im glad you enjoyed the vanishing half, that book really takes you through LIFETIMES
My only issue with orion was I WANTED MORE OF ORION hahhahah he was just a silent lurker half the time and i wanted to get to know him more - can’t wait for the sequel. And ugh yes, the vanishing half is on track to be a top 5 of the year for sure!
And thank you queen cindy 🥺
I'M ONE MINUTE IN. I think i've gotten too obsessed....
bahahah thank you!!
I just finished "A Deadly Education" by N.N. and really liked it. It had a few lengths and some overly descriptive bits. Some not 100% logical abilities, which came out of nowhere. And other under-explained miracles (apparently)... but it was enjoyable. I got through it quickly, which is a good sign. The Monsters could have been less important and the relationships of the people more important... but hopefully this is just the set-up first book.
Since you are learning French: I would highly recommend the different series from Pierre Bottero! He writes young adult fantasy but packs so much wisdom, wit and humor in there that it's a joy to read at any age. I especially liked the Ellana series, but you might want to start with La quète d'Ewilan 😊
Cari! My Ana Luisa necklace came today and I love it! The vanishing half is on my list I may pick it up next.
omg yaaay!! i'll wear mine today too heheh and its such a beautiful book :')
Hi Cari! I don’t know if you take suggestions for videos but could you make a list of books for “beginners”, books that are not hard to read, without many fancy words please 😄 Not that I’m a beginner in reading but my first language is Spanish and though I’m fluent in English, I don’t feel as comfortable as I do with Spanish when reading. Thanks 😊
I think this could be super helpful for people who are just getting or getting back into reading after a long time as well 💕
I have no idea what this beach scene is about lmao but I’m down for it 🙃
LOL no one knows!!
please read the strange the dreamer duology by laini taylor
Yes it’s an amazing duology
I felt the same way when Fable went underwater!! I just kept thinking about how I’d literally drown if I was her in her place. She’s a tough character lol
I finished The Vanishing Half in a daaaay, I was so in love with it. I lived for Jude's and Reese's story arc. And to think I picked the book on a whim from the library, without ever reading anything about it. I am so glad I went in completely blind❤
I loved Fable!!! But i agree that this was like a introduction book, so I'm excited when the second book comes out on March 16th
2021 is looking like a good reading yeeear!!!
Thank you so much for opening my eyes to different genres of books last year! You were my lockdown lifeline! 😅 I’ve just read a book that I think you might enjoy- the foundling by Stacey Halls (she also has a book called the familiars about the Pendle witch trials, but I’ve not read that... yet ☺️). It’s about this woman who has to give up her baby in 18th century England. She tries to save up and get her back after several years, but an unexpected turn of events leads her to go on a journey. It has lots of character development that I really loved, and I think you would love too!
ohhhh i will look into it, thank you!!! and im so glad! hope 2021 is a good reading year too :)
i’ve asked this before but i think you didnt see it back then, but i’m trying to get more in the historical fiction genre and i know you like it... do you have any recomendations? or if you wouldn’t mind making a video talking about it one day, maybe? i’ve read pachinko and human acts from your recommendations and i loved them!! thank youuu
ohhhh i'll have to make a list!!!
Secret history!
@@howitfeelstochewfivegum361 thanks!
if you havent read it already the song of achilles! sooo beautiful and heartbreaking
@@lindseyhunt9899 ohh i haven’t read but i want to read it!! thank you!
You read more than I did in January, I need to up my game! Congrats on 50k
we all read at our own pace!! thank you^^~
@@caricanread Good point! I guess it's ok not to be a prolific reader as long as you're a passionate reader
PLEASE READ THE BEACH SCENE!!!! ❤️✨
Also you should read the school for Good and Evil-don’t be fooled by the cover it is such an AMAZING book I’ve literally read it three times now 💕
bahahaha i'll work on the video i promise and oohhh i'll look it up!
I remember when I was reading School for Good and Evil and dying of laughter at like 1 am, trying not to wake people up, which made it automatically funnier! ✨✨
@@MavisCCC literally same. 😩😂 also which scenes made up laugh lol?
@@caricanread yeah I feel like you would really love it also I love your videos ✨ and thank you so much for replying ❤️
Omg the school of good and evil is so good!
As a Louisianan, I appreciate your correcting of how you said “New Orleans” lol
yay I’ve been desperately in the need for some new reading recs!
yessss hope one of these sounds interesting!
OMG I nearly lost it..."Sweet Bean Paste" - I watched a movie, years ago, with that plot... I assume it was based on the book. My brother and I loved it
There's a movie?! 😭
I read the book last year and it just made me feel all kinds of feels..
@@DeeRafatSweileh Yes! I actually have no idea if the title matched the title of the book, but the plot was the exact same thing... I cried like a baby at the end 😅
@@joanahenriques8863 Sweet Bean? Is that it?
@@DeeRafatSweileh YES!! :3
yay you read The Vanishing Half!! I'm glad you enjoyed it :0
i LOVED it!!
Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy is amazing.
Agreed 😭🙏
i think half of my tbr rn consists of books you've recommended
hehehe!!
I’m from Russia and I have no idea how a came across your channel but I’ve watched almost all of your videos for the past few days. You’re telling about books so passionate! LOVE IT 🥰 Wish you more followers 🔥 keep going
Love your recommendations! Sweet Bean Paste was made into a movie too and it was also sad and beautifully made.
omg really?! i'll have to look it up!!
@@caricanread I know you’ll love the movie!!!
I have an electric circuits final tmr but I also have my ✨priorities✨ straight so I'll stay up for a lol longer haha.. The amount of books you've read tho girl... so inspiring 💗 thanks for the stress relief mwah

omg WHAT i need to!!!
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!
THANK YOUUUUU!
Sia Martinez and the Moonlight Beginning of Everything looks so interesting I gotta check it out!
Hi Cari! I looooove your book reviews and recommendations, I didn't read a single book in 2020, but I'm already halfway through the first book of 2021, baby steps!!
yessss! so excited for you!!
Ooohh this was the push I needed to read daughter of smoke and bone 🤗🤗 hahaha do the beach scene video ! Did you see that girl on the last video that said that cassie posted the unedited version of the beach scene on her website !! You need to do a reaction to it 😂 I can’t suffer alone pls
lmao yessss i will! and omg yes i read that too HAHAHA
Yes, just right before going to sleep! :) I LOVED Daughter of Smoke and Bone, because it felt kinda different from all the other fantasy books I‘ve read at that time. Might need to reread the books again. Also Sweet Bean Paste was beautiful! I‘m happy that i am on some sort of reading flow right now. Probably because of lockdown I just have time on my hands now and don‘t get distracted by other things.
yay!! conquer that mountain of TBR books hahaha
Cari have you read „before the coffee gets cold“ by Toshikazu Kawaguchi? I‘m thinking about reading it but i was wondering if you‘d already read it ☺️ also, was thinking about reading some YA again after years but i hate romance with a passion and it‘s sooo hard to find YA without romance 😞
I’ve heard that before the coffee gets cold is a really good book :)
DOSAB!!!! ohmygodohmygodohmygod
ok done with slight freak out now
The author has a new series out, Strange the dreamer, if you're interested! (plus she's writing more currently, Faeries of Dreamdark, I think??)
Thanks, Cari, now it looks like I have a couple of books that I would possible read soon.
yay!!!
I looove your videos! I really enjoyed Fable, buuut Deadly Education was one of my least favourite books - it was so boring and I hated the main characters
YESS SOO EXCITED!!! Haven't been this early!
wahhhhh thank you so much!
omg unexpected jungkook vlive flashback in the begining phhh
Somehow I came across your channel and after one video I subscribed, something I rarely do! Thank you for being so down to Earth!!!
Hello Cari have you thought about reading books that are for Younger generations. I have a couple recommendations for books are for teen readers but I found them really good one is a series by Brandon mall called fable haven , another one by him is beyonders another is I don’t think it’s a teen series I think it’s by a YA series mortal engines series.
I’ve been wanting to read the Vanishing Half for so long! I loved hearing your opinion on it!
it is on track to be one of my favs of 2021 i can feel it!
not my lockdown brain thinking there’s still a week left in January and wondering why cari already made this video 😭
😂💀
can you do a video where you recommend self published books?
I've read about 8 books this month, the most I've ever read in a long time lol I'm reading the invisible life of Addie LaRue at the moment. I'm on the wait list for the vanishing half on Libby. I've been interested in the daughter of smoke and bone but they don't have it at my library 😭
I'm interested in the moonlight beginning book because it's so related to my situation, but won't be reading it for a while since it hits too close to home 😅. I'm a Mexican immigrant and ever since 2016 I've had so much stress about my family's and myselfs status. Things are looking better now that we have someone who's not racist in office, but ptsd is still there because of the last 4 years. I remember the raids that ICE made almost every day and how many families were affected. Nothing is certain when you're an immigrant tbh. Even if you're "legal". I remember the streets would be deserted whenever there was rumor that there would be patrolling. Walmarts would be empty, schools were empty. I remember not going to school for a whole week afraid that we would just be one of the unlucky ones. Some of the twitter profiles you can follow if you're interested in knowing what else is going on is RAICES and United We Dream.
thank you and yes, i cant even imagine. I have worked with/donated to RAICES before and love their work!! Sending you and your loved ones lots of love.
@@caricanread I'm glad! 🥰
Please do this Cassy Clare scene! 😍
this might be off topic, but you remind me of a kindergarten teacher 🤔
Magic puberty is very percy Jackson plot like
Absolutely loved The Vanishing Half. It's up there in my top three books of 2020.
definitely think it will be in my top 2021!!
@@caricanread She also has a book titled 'Mothers'. Not as good as The Vanishing Half but still great.
Sweat Bean Paste is also a movie, and it's really enjoyable. It's called Sweet Bean (2015)
Ah I wanted to read deadly education but no one had talked about it before, thank you for sharing ur experience :)
How do y'all get over a book ending question?
Ooh cute sweater
heheh thank you!
Highly recommend 10,000 Doors of January. I really enjoyed it!
yes!! i read that in 2019 and loved it!
Just recently added "Sweet Bean Paste" on my reading list and what a coincidence that you uploaded a review about it! So excited to read it!!! Thank you Cari!!! You inspire me to read more!!! 😊💕
Oohhh I read Sweet Bean Paste last year. It went from sweet and wholesome to really sad in an unexpected way 😂
Cari i love your excitement and interest in the books you read. The energy you spread is so nice to feel through your videos.
Thank you ☺️🙏
congrats on 50k+! you deserve it and so so so many more! :) thank you for reigniting my love for reading and i’m so glad that you’ve found and created this little place on the internet that you love so much (your happiness is so contagious)!

i want the beach scene video so bad aha
So cool. I also started the year reading a book that helped me a lot and also helped me to focus on my priorities but without getting stressed and it's really a good book that I recommended to my friends too hehehe.
The book title is "Things That We See When We Slow Down" from Haemin Sunim :)
i have that on my bookshelf and pick it up whenever i need a little inspo :)
my motivation to read a lot more this year! 🤓📖 (starting with pachinko first next week)
yesssss!!!
Hey, I am new here, just subscribed. Have you read the Old Kingdom Series by Garth Nix? It is one of my favourites, along with Philipp Pullman’s His Dark Materials. Loving your channel and whole vibe. ❤️
The movie ''Sweet Bean'' (2016) dir. by Naomi Kawase, based on the book you mentioned, ''Sweet Bean Paste'', is so so so so GOOD, one of my favorite movies of all times (':
your videos always come when I need them! this made my day Cari thank u for being awesome💕
thank you so much! im so glad :')
Ahhhhhhhh!!! Yessss!!!! Right in time for my lunch break 😭😭
☺️☺️☺️
Is there any romance in A Deadly Education??
A little but the two characters are so awkward and dont talk to each other so its not a huge part of it 😂😂
I totally thought I was already subscribed. So just subbed 🙂. The Vanishing Half is on my 2021 book list. Can't wait to read.
This month I only managed to read The Selection (which was okay, I guess?) because I was too busy watching dramas. I know you've said you don't typically watch them, but there have been some which while watching them I've said "man, Cari would appreciate this". So if it's okay with you, I'm gonna leave some titles in case you are interested :) ✨
Start Up,
One Spring Night,
Because This is My First Life.
And I would recommend The Secret Life Of My Secretary solely because there is this one character who is bonkers and I love her with all my heart! ♥️
Also, the c-drama Go Ahead for a quick cry and feel good kinda thing.
I know I'm always here recommending things but I JUST WANT TO SHARE THE THINGS I LOVE WITH THE PERSON WHO GIVES ME #BIGSISTER ENERGY
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
If you want to try scifi, I would highly suggest The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson. Not my normal type of read, but it was so good, had some unexpected surprises, and good characterization and world building.
ahhh congrats on 50k! also i saw that tik tok with the YA books in the background and literally paused it so i could see the titles 💀
thank youuuu and right?! got to read legendborn next hheheheh
@@caricanread omg yesss you need to, it's one of my favs of 2020!
i was kind of interested in A Deadly Education but after hearing you talking about it i can’t wait to read it now 👀
yeah interestingly enough i liked the world building more than the characters and im usually more character leaning haha
OMG Sweet Bean Paste has also a wonderful movie Sweet Bean (An) totally recommend 😄. Another great Japanese “food movie” is The Last Recipe. A Japanese author I’m obsessed with is Keigo Higashino all I’ve read is 100/10 😊
Congrats on 50k!!! I love your cozy and lovely channel :) You always look so beautiful and adorable! Thanks for your book reviews and recommendations! 항상 행복하고 건강하세요 ~
Have you read Deeplight by Frances Hardinge? It's amazing! It's Y.A (but on the mature side). It's in a fantasy world with islands that used to be ruled by deep sea gods. This book's vibe is so nice. You can smell the sea and hear the waves. Basically the gods all died 50 years ago and now the islanders dive to get the godswares in the sea (parts of the gods' bodies) and sell them. Honestly the world building is breathtaking and captivating. The hero is a 14 year-old boy, an orphan, that grew up in that world. It's in my top five of the books I've read in 2020 (and I've read 91 total so it says something).
Netflix has a film for Sweet Bean (An). Really good film and equally sad, I think.
Congratulations on 50K!!! Wow, you deserve it!
My very first video of you was “Reading like BTS’ Namjoon” and now I am in love with both your channels!
I just watched so many videos trying to find you talking about Fable lol. I started reading it like 3 days ago and I already have the second book in hand to read since it ended on a cliffhanger. PLEASE READ IT!!
Thank you for the recommendations ❤️ My TBR (or PAL in French) is getting longer... I loved the Sweet bean paste movie adaptation (the old lady is amazing). I heard about Daughter of smoke and bone, definitely want to read now I know you liked it !
There's a 4 book saga here in France which had a huge success (well deserved) and it's been translated into English : The Mirror Visitor. It's difficult to summarize, it's a mix between Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and Miyazaki (weird but fascinating world). I think you could enjoy it 😉
One time I was in the book store and saw the vanishing half but did not buy it. Maybe I will consider reading it now hmm.
I only read after dark by murakami this month but its okay because I loved it!! I really liked the atmosphere and the characters of it.
There's a movie called Sweet Bean based on
Sukegawa's book!
It's really good and also a very close rendition of the book.
This January i read the infernal devices in like 3 weeks and 🤌🤌🤌 mam what was that end. Definitely my fave in the shadow hunter world and Jem🥲 loved the recommendation from the BTS bias video actually and now I have six of crows up and ready for me to read in february✌
have you read the empirium trilogy? I really enjoyed it and I'm curious to know how you would feel about the series! Congrats on 50K!!
There’s a novella for Mik and Suzana called Night of Cake and Puppets that’s adorable that I highly recommend you check out! Also listening to the audiobook for A Deadly Education helped me absorb/understand the magic system a little better!
Like I get it, but as someone whose ethnicity is literally called "coloured" (south africa), I find it so weird that people are cautious around using the word coloured. It's so fascinating to me.
Cari you're so pure and wonderful, I love your channel x
omg thank you :')
your hair is so pretty omg and also love your channel heaps! just watched your ya fantasy series ranking thing and you've got a new subscriber :)
I’m reading the Island of Sea Women right now. It’s really beautiful and it takes place on Jeju Island. It would be fun for you to read right before you go to Jeju sometime.
Contrats on the 50k cari!! U deserve it ^^ 🥳🎉
thank you so much 💞
Congrats on 50k!! Here's to 100k and hopefully finding more time for reading in 2021 (or at least as much as you'd like to) I can imagine that having so many different hobbies on top of a demanding job doesn't leave much time for escaping into books, but what can you do😢
The Vanishing Half was one of those books that I just couldn't bring myself to pick up because of the enormous hype but when I finally did... oh man... I decided to listen to an audio of it one day when I was searching something super engaging as a soundtrack for deep cleaning the entire house and needles to say, I spent like 7 hours doing absolutely everything arnd the apartment that I could because I just didn't want to stop listening it was madness lol.
Every time I watch one of your videos I promise myself that I won’t add any more books to my already endless TBR, and every time, I fail 😂😂😂📚
I HIGHLY recommend the Sweet Bean Paste movie! It is one of my favorite Japanese films ever. It’s so beautiful
I think I watched a movie based on the Sweet Bean Paste book a couple years ago and I absolutely loved the movie, maybe this is a sign to read the book...
Thank you for making this video omg!!! Now I've got some good ideas for what to read in 2021 to reach my goodreads target 😌😌😌
I saw the movie for "Sweet Bean Paste". It was a really good one! Can't say anything about the implementation of the book bc I haven't read it - but the movie was well made. 👍
Cari can you please read the goldflinch it's really a beautiful book❤️
i actually really didnt like it hahahah i read more than half and was soooo bored - same with the secret history :( I just dont think donna tartt is for me :/
@@caricanread it's okay we have our own taste in books I really love your videos ❤️
sweet bean paste actually has a movie version in case you did not know😁 and it is equally as emotional. made me cry sooo hard😭😭😭😭
lot's of love from the Philippines!! stay safe😘😘
Hi Cari! You got me exicited with the memory police!! I'm reading the last book in the giver series atm, and now I can't wait to read it!! 🤣🤣 I'll just have to wait for it to be available at my library😭
Really looking forward to hearing your opinion on "The Memory Police", I recently finished it and while I didn´t like some parts of the ending, I overall loved it
Congrats on the 50k!!
This video just reminded me that i need to finish the Daughter of smoke and bone triology lol. I also recently read the Memory Police and i thought it was so intriguing at the start but found the ending quite confusing and dissapointing.
I loooove the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy! Did you read the novella as well? That one was fun!
