I really like that you started to do booktube. I love hearing people talk about books they loved and actually read. I get really tired of people just buying books and saying how excited they are to read them but never follow through. So it's really nice that you talked about books you actually liked and feel passionate about.
I also really really loved howls moving castle and i think I need to reread it soon.
And Cornelia funke's inkheart is really amazing.
Really looking forward to more book videos from you, I really enjoy your calm but still enthusiastic and loving nature 😊❤️

The movie is my favorite. Sadly I loved the movie so much the book was a disappointment cause I didn’t go in with the right mindset. One of my favorite scenes from the movie wasn’t in the book so that was sad. My problem was I kept comparing the two. I want to go back and reread it with a clear fresh view.

    • @manicmuffin

Don't expect the book to be very similar to the movie. Miyamoto and Studio Ghibli usually take inspiration from something (like "The Borrowers" for "The Secret World of Arrietty," or "Kiki's Delivery Service" by Kadono Eiko for the same-named movie), they take the bare bones of the story (like the setting and characters) but then change a lot of it and truly make it their own with characterization, plot, magic, world building, etc. Both the book and the movie are awesome, but in their own very different ways.

    • @marycaitdolan7251

I LOVE the movie and I read the book for the first time a year or two ago and I loved it so much. Like the other commenters said, don't expect it to be exactly the same as the film. I think the biggest similarity between the two is the feeling you get while reading/watching - that feeling of magic and whimsy and wonder. :) I loved the book because I felt like it gave so much more context and depth to the story and didn't leave questions unanswered like I feel like the movie does (like why does Sophie keep turning young throughout the course of the movie? Why exactly is Howl a giant bird man???? lol) and it's just such a good story. I need to reread it asap!

I read The Thief Lord when I was in early middle school and I adored the story so much. When I was in my final year of middle school (8th grade), we had to "take care" of an egg for our Health class, as we learned about pregnancy and child care. We had to make sure that our egg "baby" was alive for a week without being broken or replaced. I named mine Prosper haha.

I loved the City of Ember series as a child and also just any book by Roald Dahl or Dr. Seuss. The Giving Tree is more of a picture book but it is the first book that made me cry. I also loved the Percy Jackson series as a kid and also secretly hoped that one of my parents was a god so that I could go to Camp Half Blood. Reading The Unicorn Chronicles prompted me to go around my city, trying to to find an unicorn. There also loads of other books that I loved as a child such as the Secret Garden, Where the Wild Things Are, Anne of Green Gables, Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, The 39 Clues, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The A-Z Mysteries, Cam Jensen, Bridge to Terebithia... the list goes on and on

This makes me want to reread Elle Enchanted, a fun little take on Cinderella, but with like a coming of age, coming into your own power story. Or the Hunger Games, definitely the Hunger Games! I was in middle school when they came out and I remember being dissapointed by how Mockingjay ended but now that I'm a grown up and study liberation and race and wealth inequality, I think understanding that revolution will be incredible. Like reading race and contemporary America into a childhood classic (for me) ☺️

Yes, Howl's Moving Castle!! I reread HMC in January because I was in a reading slump and needed something familiar and fun :) It's so wonderful, and I love how sassy Sophie is. And that last chapter, *chef's kiss*. I'm really blanking on other books I loved as a kid, but oddly the ones I remember right now had a lot of mice protagonists? The magician's nephew! As a kid, I used to read the second (third?) chapter over and on over, the dizzy feeling, the atmosphere of an old old old place... I'm glad that you don't think that reading YA books are terrible. Sometimes I just want a book that's easy to read, fast and entertaining, but there are people out there that looked down on me for wanting to take a break from large adult books to read some YA. Even in the library, there are people who just stare condescendingly as if you shouldn't be there.

My favourite book as a kid was The Borribles. I was so deeply invested in the story and characters that parts of the plot have been filed away in my brain like personal memories, and it's like "Oh wait, I didn't have a fight to the death in a collapsing cave, that was someone else!" I have the books still but I'm nervous to read them again in case it isn't as good as I remember.

I actually only became an avid reader in my teens, but my twin sister was really obsessed with Cornelia Funke's books. I read The Thief Lord sometime in my early teens and enjoyed it a lot!
Same as you, I only got around to read Howl's Moving Castle as an adult despite watching the film in cinema as kid. And oh dear do I adore it! I read the other books in the trilogy and I can say they are worth a go, even though I enjoyed House of Many Ways more than Castle in the Air.
The very first book I bought with my own money was Mara - Daughter of the Nile and it's definitely the book I read the most since I was 11 to now. I can't speak for the English edition, but the German translation aged well and I was shocked to find out how old this book actually is because it really reads like a book from the 2000s.

Along came a Dog by meindert DeJong. It's about a stray dog who decides to watch out for a farmers chicken. Strange I know but so sweet. The Narnia tales. Wrinkle in time triology. I loved e. Nesbit. One of the first books I’ve read and loved is Granny Torrelli Makes Soup by Sharon Creech. It’s about these two childhood friends/neighbors who had a fight. One of them confides in Granny Torrelli who makes this delicious Italian soup while telling the kid some warm stories of her own childhood to help her make peace with her childhood friend. It gives off a very homey and nostalgic feeling. Thanks for taking us down the memory lane with you. 💕

Switchers by Katie Thompson is such an imaginative book that was my dream as a child. The premise is that all children have the ability to shapeshift into animals but in this world it is a secret and only a few people learn about it. If they don't figure out how to do it before they turn a certain age they will never be able to. I've reread this book countless times and its just amazing. Another one is Varjack Paw by S F Said. I have Haroun and the Sea of Stories due to a collection that I collected without knowing what it's about and now based on your description I'm going to have to move it up earlier to my tbr. I have Howl on there as well, and I love the movie. So glad you mentioned The Magician's Nephew too, one of my favorites from the series. Every video of yours that I watch just reiterates that we have extremely similar reading habits and I've gotten to the point that if you mention a book I haven't read yet, I add it to my list. Some of my other favorites from childhood include The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, The Goose Girl Shannon Hale (which I recently reread and enjoyed as much as I did when I was a kid), and anything by Eva Ibbotson.

    2. Howl's moving castle. What to say, I've loved the movie for a very long time but I didn't know there was a book until I was finishing high school and I randomly found it in the library. I immediately loved the book even more (if that is possible). I think I finished it in 2 days and it's one of the books I keep re-reading all the time hehe it just makes me happy.
I'm spanish so most of the books I read as a kid are from spanish authors but if anyome here has read any of Laura Gallego, Carlos Ruiz Zafon books we are reading buddies hehe.

Omg it makes me so happy to see that Cornelia Funke is a thing in other countries! I'm from Germany and I feel like German authors are not really popular anywhere else. Unfortunately I read the Thief Lord but never actually finished it back then... I should do that soon!

I loved Funke's books as well, especially Inkheart (it was my dream to disappear into a book haha), but throughout most of my childhood I related more to animal-centred stories, so E.B White was a lot of fun for me ( specifically The Trumpet of the Swan, which is lesser known). I also loved Black Beauty and loved/hated White Fang since I was too young to be prepare for the ending.

When a kid I don't had access a lots of books but the first book I remember reading avidly is "Uma professora muito maluquinha" by Ziraldo - maybe the translation is A very much crazy teacher? - it's a classic brazilian book and is about this teacher who really love teaching and because of that can change the way the kids, and parents, in school see the books and education. I remember that when I finished I was determined to read all the books in the world. 😁

Howl's Moving Castle is my all time favorite book :) I love anything written by Dianna Wynne Jones, her Christomanci series is also very good. As a child I also really enjoyed reading Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. Her other books are also great reads.

I was in and out of public school in elementary and middle school (was homeschooled all of high school) for medical reasons, but there are two distinct books we were required to read in 5th grade, and I LOVED them. Hatchet and Where the Red Fern Grows. I liked Hatchet so much I read some of the other books from the author too. I'm not much of a reader anymore (no time in college), but I love watching others talk about their books :)

I am definitely going to give Howl's Moving Castle a read. I want to learn more about Michael and Calcifer.
I grew up reading Roald Dahl (LOVED The B.F.G.), Horrible Histories, and Dimitar Inkiow. However, once I discovered the crime/thriller section of the library, I fell in love with Martina Cole, Patricia Cornwell and Mary Higgins Clark. Goodbye, childhood. Goodbye, innocence. :) xx

I am French. I bought my favorite children’s books a few years ago. One was also from a German author. The book was called Tombée du ciel and told the story of a Mo, a little extraterrestrial girl found by kids and hidden until her family came back for her. My other book was Jamais content (never satisfied) who told a story of a young duck not happy with its body and who kept asking Nature’s Mother for new features ( an otter’s tail and fur, laying eggs but being a mammal etc.) at the end he had become the first platypus !

For me it was anything by Jaqueline Wilson, Cornelia Funke, Sally Gardner (the Red Necklace series especially has my heart~) and Roald Dahl. There’s probably others, but those are the ones that come to mind. Honestly would read any of those now too haha. Also, as a teenager I was obsessed with Cassandra Clare and I still read them now at 25 haha some books just create worlds that you’re never too old to escape to!

Howl is so special to me in sooo many ways! But I think the most interesting thing for me personally is that he's Welsh and the 'saucepan song' that Calcifer sings I like to think hints at the song 'Sosban Bach' which is famous in my tiny hometown...so to think that Howl is from my tiny hometown makes me feel such a strong connection!

A Wrinkle in Time slaps!!! The concepts are so mind-blowing and they pulled me in as a kid. And Howl’s Moving Castle is my childhood!!!!! The series and the film made me proud to be a Sophie 😂 I grew up on the Percy Jackson books, and the Gregor the Overlander series really resonated with me as a kid. It’s on my shelf. When I see it, I feel so much warmth and nostalgia, even when the stories are a little dark (no pun intended!) and sad.

I remember reading James and The Giant Peach over and over in this little book corner of my Kumon centre while waiting for my siblings to finish their sessions. Just a little corner where time stopped until its time to go home.
One of my other most favourite is Jayden's Rescue. Idt many people know about it and I have never found it in bookstores which is a shame since I've always wanted to read it again since the I can never find the copy.. maybe my grandma tossed it out while cleaning or something. Will not stop looking for it tho😊

I cant pinpoint any particular book from my childhood off the top of my head, but anything from Neil Gaiman was amazing to read and the Harry Potter series is also a classic and comforting series for me. I did absolutely adore the comfort and feelings of the book The secret life of bees by Sue Monk Kidd.

There were two books that I loved as a kid and they really helped me learn to enjoy reading. The first was Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. It’s super short and pretty damn sad but I don’t know, I just connected with it. I read some of her other books after and looooved them too, like Walk Two Moons and Bloomability. The second book is A Pizza The Size of The Sun. I always hear people talk about Where The Sidewalk Ends (which is great too) when it comes to these like children’s poetry books, but personally A Pizza is just 👌🏼

I think she also went with him to the underworld for a bit, but yeah, it’s by Neil Gaiman and it’s pretty awesome.

Howls moving castle is my all time favorite book! I love it! As a kid I remember reading and rereading A Whole Nother Story by Dr Cuthbert Soup, The Unfinished Angel by Sharon Creech, Missing Magic by Emma Laybourn, The Kneebone Boy by Ellen Potter, and The Shakespeare Stealer trilogy by Gary Blackwood. All of those are pretty short too, 1-3 day reads.

i really wish i read more when i was younger. the only series i ever managed to really get into was diary of a wimpy kid and dork diaries, the land of stories, and a series of unfortunate events. i also read a bunch of graphic novels because that was really all i had wanted to pick up for a while but aside from that i never did very much reading. now i love books so much that i can’t imagine life without them. shoutout to the lunar chronicles for showing me just how incredible stories can be
