thank you!! im glad too :)
As someone who reads a lot of classics, it’s important to know that it takes time to get used to the writing style of a different time period. We use a lot of conscious and sub-conscious effort when reading literature from a different decade, or century that we’re not extensively familiar with. After all, most classics use language patterns and words that are no longer used outside of these works. I ran into the same problem when reading Shakespeare. Although they’re short plays it takes me quite a while to get through them. Eventually, reading more of his work got me acclimated to his language and style. With more exposure to an era’s sound the easier it gets to read it with less effort. Also it’s totally normal for a read to take longer with one author from a specific era than another. For me I can read Charlotte Brontë with ease but Emily Brontë’s writing takes me much longer. Be patient with yourself! It will get easier with time. ❤️
exactly!! the only time i really felt like i understood shakespeare was when i read it in class and my teacher would stop and explain each line LOL it definitely requires a lot of effort :)
Genesis Hinton same with the Brontë Sisters. I also read lots of classics in French or English and the language is different. Austen is really easy and fluid. When I read Middlemarch I remember that at the beginning I wasn’t fond of Eliot’s writing style but I just wasn’t used to it. It got easier and I devoured the 800 next pages. In French classics we have the same issues. Reading classics all the time and participate to the Victober challenge is really nice. Thanks Cari for saying out loud that you can love a classic as
Ugh as a contemporary novel.
It's good that you mentioned that reading certain books takes more time, because I always felt like a “bad reader” when that happened and seeing that it happens to others too is liberating :)
Yesss! Its easy to get frustrated but we’re ALL frustrated so you’re not alone hahha
What a great idea, just a "reading day" dedicated to unwinding, unplugging, and just *reading.* Sounds perfect! (Who am I kidding, I would "sneak a peek" at instagram or youtube and then lose like four hours of my day. I need help, lol). Also, I love the little cat ears on the bread, so cute!
hahahh that's why i go to the park and have a very limited data plan on my phone so i cant look at insta! and the cafe i go to in the morning has spotty wifi so even if i check instagram i never can for too long LOL!!
Oh my gosh I totally relate to reading older historical fiction at a slower pace! I think its also because sometimes older classics have much more text on the page(depending on the edition of the book) in comparison to newer contemporary books.
exactly!! thats why i tend to never finish them but im trying to get better at it hahaha
I've misssssssssssssssssssssssssssed youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu (didn't think I would miss a RUclipsr, who knew?) It's like seeing a friend again.
hahahah i missed you all tooooooooo!
Listening to audiobooks is a good way to get started if you want to read the classics. Grew up reading the classics and once you get used to the language and formal style, it gets easier.
i definitely need to try this!!
😳😳😳 [‘Croissant bread’ is now a bucket list item]
its dangerous hahah i finished the loaf in about 36 hours
cari can read did it taste like a croissant :o? Or was it mostly the croissant-like layering that it’s famous for
I definetely need it
loved the earrings. also missed your videos, they bring me such a peace
thank you!!! making them brings me a lot of peace too so I'm glad the feeling is mutual!
I just finished (and freaking loved) Rebecca and immediately ordered some of her other books. I found it so hard to get a proper pace, as I always do with classics and modern classics, but once it hooked me, I devoured it. It's like another muscle I dont flex as often because the language just takes more attention. Which I also really love Haha. I hope you love it.
Oh and if youd like some recommendations for some modern classics to jump into after Rebecca, I'd really recommend "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" by Shirley Jackson and "I Capture the Castle" by Dodie Smith. Both totally different feels, but both have great young female protagonists and a castle/big house as an almost-character, so if you enjoyed that aspect of Rebecca you might enjoy too.
yes!! especially the last quarter of the book its SO FAST and exciting!!! and ohhhh i will look at both of these thank you!!!
the tracking app is SO smart, i’m jealous. this vlog was so calming and cute and i absolutely loved it!
right?!! and thank you :')
I really like this style and especially the intro!!! I felt so serene watching this, we missed your content, Cari!
thank you so much :')
Good to see you again, I hope you're doing OK
thank you!! hope you're doing ok too^^
"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again." Such a famous first line to a novel!!!!! Welcome back.🦋🌹😊
when i read it i always hear Joan Fontaine's voice in my head hahaha and thank you!!
I know exactly what you mean about how different books demand different pacing - maybe especially classics? I read Dune in two days but spent like three months on the Silmarillion, but I loved both!
i really need to read Dune but for some reason im so intimidated by it??? got to change that!
@@caricanread It's really long, but it's a pretty easy read! Still, it's one of those books that I'm really glad I *have read* rather than a book I like *to read*. Does that make sense? It's really foundational for the sci-fi genre, and its got some really cool elements (and some very problematic ones), so it's fun to keep it in mind while reading newer works where the authors grew up with Dune and its copy cats :)
Such beautiful editing and storytelling! Your videos always put me in such a good mood. Thank you, Cari😊
thank YOU!
aw man ... reading books in the park, eating croissant bread and drinking matcha ... you are living my dream life!!
I'm glad to see you're back! I hope you found what you needed in your time away.
thank you! happy to be back :)))
I missed your videos a lot, glad you’re back!
thank you!!!
Im korean and it feels so weird to see a booktuber who lives in korea good weird i mean haha. Really enjoyed the vlog thank you!!
hahahah thank you!!
Damn, I loved everything about this! The vibe, the music, the mixture between talking and just some nice shots. I just love seeing people read, especially if they drag the book everywhere like I do 🖤
cant go anywhere without a book hehehe
i feel that!! i picked up dorian gray and was shocked by how long it took me to get through, with it being under 200 pages. books really do have to be read differently
yes!! i used to get so discouraged by books like that but now im trying my best to practice patience lol
I forget how much calm your videos bring to my life. All I want to do now is go to the park and read (but it’s raining, so I can’t😭) so lovely to have you back!
a rainy day is a great reading day too at least
So nice to see your videos again!
thank youuuuu!
If anyone is wanting to read older books/ classics I've found listening to them as audiobooks is *far easier* (and most are freeee 👌 ). They're already slowed down to speaking pace and even if you find an word/ phrase/ sentence difficult to understand to book keeps going and you can usually figure it out from context clues. This way you don't lose momentum and sit there re-reading the same line over and over until you give up (speaking from experience aha).
Find them on Spotify or RUclips ✌️
i really need to try that! i tend to go for nonfiction when it comes to audiobooks but i need to switch it up!
@@caricanread and I need to try listening to non fiction, that's such a good idea! I don't know why I don't already do that 😅
I have literally been waiting to see you post (kind of checking everyday, especially ur book channel 😁). So excited to watch!
im back!!! thank you so much!!!
Very pleasant to watch. 💚 I always dream of the day I am there and get to read by the river. Plans have changed I'll be there in October.
So glad to see you back sharing what you love. 😊
october is the best ^^ happy to be back hehe
your videos made me fall in love with reading once again♥️ thank you
wahhhh thats the best thing to hear!! thank YOU!
The Ghost Bride is so good! Excited to see what you think about it! 😆💕
perfect for spooky season!!
books "ask for different things" . I love this phrase, it's so true
:')
I've been back on reading more recently all thanks to you (Leigh Bardugo always helps). Your vlogs are always so enjoyable and soothing!
that always makes me so happy to hear :') and leigh just shared the cover of her next book in the grishaverse!! i cant wait!!!
Yeah!!!!
About your different reading speeds, I've noticed that I function pretty similarly! Reading classic novels takes me exponentially longer than a YA fantasy or contemporary fiction. Thank you for the assurance that I'm allowed to take my time with books💕
yes!! books should be enjoyed in any length of time!!
Hi Cari! I love your videos, they've really helped through this whole lock down. They've helped inspire me to cook more and have my own little city garden. If you can't go outside, you can bring it inside.
Thank you so so much for being you and bringing us amazing videos.
omg i love that!! my poor basil is taking over the apartment hahah thank you always!
The little (duh lol) in the captions sends me. I love when you add little annotations or comments in the captions 💕
hahahah glad you caught that!
Morning tea and cari again at last🥺 i’m so happy, day made! 💕

The editing at the beginning of this video was so comforting
❤️❤️❤️
Oh man this hit the spot because I've been missing your cari cakes vlogs so much!
Since you've started taking creative writing seriously, I'm curious if you think it's affecting your vlogging? Like in the way you film and edit?
Love the new glasses btw!
honestly, it just makes me want to sit in a cafe and write instead of filming hahahhaha and thank you!! i've missed posting too!!!
One of things I’ve missed most is going to a cafe to read/work. I def need to go to the park to read more. This was so nice and relaxing
💖💖💖
So true about classics. It took me 3 times to finish Anna Karenina. I feel like there are other classics authors that I would love to be able to say I have read, but I know it will be a chore and need to plan it out and be in the right state of mind for them.
omg it took me 3 times just to watch the movie version lol!!!
I was wishing so hard you make this kind of vlog!, its beautiful, thank you Cari. All my love from Mexico.
thank you so so much!! sending you lots of love back!!
Ohh how I've missed you 🥺 Moved to a new apartment in the big city, but I knew it wouldn't feel like home until I could watch one of your videos ❤️

Croissant bread wow. The Ghost Bride has been adapted to a Netflix show too! it's pretty lighthearted.
i need to check it out!
ahh you talked about two of my favorite books in this vlog! I read Rebecca almost 10 years ago now and I fell in love with it so quickly. I read it in junior year high school english class and that same year I read another all-time favorite, the Kite Runner (Hosseini) and both of them still hold such fond memories for me. I have to re-read it before I watch the movie! And Shadow and Bone is so wonderful, I flew through it as well, I hope you devour the rest of the series as well.
i remember reading kite runner in high school too omg! and you can watch me freak out over the whole series here hahahha leigh made me lose my mind! ruclips.net/video/5pu25oYYCRQ/видео.html
@@caricanread I can't wait to see what you think of the rest of them!! :)

cari can read it’s so nasty!!! hope you enjoy it!!
I love Rebecca by Daphne. It’s my favorite of her books. I don’t know if you read it but she wrote Frenchman’s Creek. Amazing, adventure and romance and the words reads like beautiful descriptive poetry.
ohhhhh i will look into it asap!
Cari is back! Hope you're having a good Friday ❤

hope the rest of your day was lovely!
I set myself a personal challenge earlier this year to finish all my TBR shelves (yeah, plural) by the end of November, but I had to weed out the classics. It's too much effort. I'll tackle Middlemarch in December.
omg best of luck hahahaha
The QR check-in system is very cool! I really enjoyed this vlog; it was so lovely to watch!
thank you always!! and yeah the qr system is so easy!
Was having a little reading slump with Little Women. How could I?😐 (it might be 'cause I watched the movie as I was reading it) this is really helpful.Thank you Cari ❤

Hi Cari, my first time seeing you was when I came accros the video
when you were in Edinburgh, that was about 3 months ago, then I was hooked on all your travels, my son lives and works in Tokyo, so that was good to get your opinion.
I love where you live, it seems such an interesting country, you come across as being very happy there. I like when we met your boyfriend, or is he your husband now ?
As for reading books...... I used to, but that was while I had a daily commute from the Scottish Borders to Edinburgh ( I have lived in Edinburgh for the past 13 yrs. )
So I did all my reading on the bus in to work.
I read Ian Rankin's books which I really enjoyed, and I visited most of the places that Rebus was said to frequent during his investigations etc etc.
I met Ian one day, and I thanked him for getting me into reading books as I had not read much before. I started reading other stuff, and I really enjoyed that too.
Not much of a reader at the moment, but I love the way you share your findings whether it be on travel or books.
Never give up that smile of yours, you always cheer me up, and i'm quite sure that most of your subscribers think the same as me.
I love the way you share stuff with us.
Can you slow your panning round so we get to saver some of the lovely places you get to, sometimes it's a little too fast and we miss what you are able to see.
Thank you so much Cari for just being you.
You take care now.
All the very best.
David 😄 XX
Hi Cari I missed you! i hope you are going well 💗
hope you're doing well toooooo!
I'm soooooo grateful that you started this booktube channel and I also love watching reading vlogs :)
