Get that Massive Worship Drum Tone with this Industry Secret
Question, what if you could sit down at any drum kit and have it sound exactly like the albums you love? Now you can.
Payden Hilliard, drummer for Leeland & Co-Owner of Drum Sample Shop, has spent the past 6.5 years playing 1000s of services on different drum kits all over the tone & quality spectrum!
Sometimes he shows up at a church and the drumset is absolutely incredible! Other times he shows up and the kit is almost impossible to redeem. He wasn't able to bring a drumset with him on the road either, so he needed to come up with a solution that would allow him to achieve consistent high-quality sounding drums.
The solution: triggering acoustic drum samples!
While there are a lot of physical drum kits out there that you can use to get great sound, they can also be expensive. That’s why sampling has become so popular in recent years. With samples, you have access to an immense range of sounds and tones to choose from at an affordable price.
In the video below, Payden is going to talk all things drum samples in a worship settings. He'll cover:

Today, we’ll provide our top pick for the best drum sample packs available today-and tell you everything you need to know about different sounds and uses so you can get the most out of your purchase.

We’ll discuss how to navigate the world of drum samples, from the software and hardware you need, to loading them into your setup. We'll cover everything you need to know to be up and running in no time.

I guess 2 things to add, 1st you need Steven Slate Trigger to use these samples in a DAW to sample replace your Snare/Toms live, alternatively if its post recording you could convert audio to midi (using transient mode) and then use say a drum rack inside Ableton and load them up that way. And the second point is blend the snare sample with your existing that way it still feels real. I know both Bethel and Upperroom only use the samples for full groove moments.

What's the mixing process for samples and regular mics?

the answer is... whatever sounds good. 50/50 blend to start and adjust from there. if you need more articulation/natural dynamics, lean more heavily on the natural drums. if you need more consistent hits, lean more heavily on the samples. as far as eq, i believe these samples are already eq'd so it's just plug and play.

Do you have to tune the drums to the same pitch as the samples? It seems like if the drums were tuned lower or higher than the recorded samples you’d hear the difference when the sample is triggered and it wouldn’t sound good.

Soooo just a little update on my side..😊 I bought the triggers a year ago and play with them in church since then. I mostly use them as gates and this video made me curious how that "shit" works because it's a whole lot of effort to really incooperate those things in a real church environment. Randomly the Video just popped up again and I watched it again and decided, it's now time to buy the samplepack. I started a RUclips Channel where I do worship drumming and I'm so pumped to set my spdsx up with those samples to enhance my drum sound for my next worship covers! Lots of love from Germany man you brought a whole big stone into rolling the last 1.5 years😂👍🔥

This does expose a secret.....That being said, I really like to get my drums to sound good without all of this stuff....And if you are setting up every week....it will add time to get everything up, soundcheck never goes perfect. Might as well get a Electronic Kit.

@@Worshiponline But as far as I can tell, the SPD-SX only accepts 2 dual-trigger inputs, so if he's using Y-cables to bring in 4 triggers, he's only getting single zone from each (thus the snare trigger doesn't necessarily need to be dual zone; it's not connecting to two inputs).

The secret to that snare sound that no one will tell you is the compression and reverb that’s on it.
Set the compressor threshold to 20 db below where the snare is hitting, and set the ratio to 2:1. Give it roughly 6-8 db makeup gain and you’ll have the nice initial hit.
Then, set the reverb to sound as much like a stadium as you can, and listen to the difference in your mix.

You guys that dont like it, dont buy the samples nor the triggers keep sounding mediocre. Even professional mixing engineers use drum replacement so why not to use that tool if you lack of a good drumset/drummer/acoustic space/mics/mic technique/mixing skills/ good mixer/ and good overall mixing a band thats some of the things to make a drummer sound good besides tunning.
