Building a Mini Ramp in our Garage.

- We're building a small mini ramp in our garage to help us stay sane over the winter and through the dark nights. This will be used for both skateboarding and my minirocker bmx bike. Mini ramps take up more space than you think but so far it's worth it. Having a place to get a little exercise while it's raining outside or dark out has been completely worth it in my book. I spend a lot of time behind the computer editing these days, so I try to give myself a lot of different options to move around.
Demensions:
Total height 24inches
Transition height 20.5 inches (a little short, but good for learning)
Deck length 18 & 12 Inches (I'd recommend having one side 24 inches)
Flat Bottom 53 Inches (feels a bit cramped, recommend longer if possible)
Transition Radius 68 Inches (Happy with)
Width 8ft (wouldn't want any skinnier)
Length 15.3 (longest we could fit inside garage)
Approximate Material list and cost (rounding up to include tax)
35 * 2x4 studs (skeleton) $210
7 * 3/8 inch plywood sheathing (surface) $175
1 * 19/32 inch plywood (sides) $35
150 * 3 inch constructions screw (4 each stud) $25
500 * 2 inch screw for surface $25
2 * 10ft 1.5inch PVC pipe $10
Total cost $480 - Keep in mind the price of lumber fluctuates depending on the demand. 2x4 studs are sometimes $3.75 on the low side and $8 dollars on the high side.
I just chilled with Phil while watching phils world.
I would put the bikes in the house and make the whole garage into a bowl !
I can’t have been the only one who saw Phil get on the skateboard and push with his front foot and be like oh dear then he starts doing somewhat advanced stuff
Me: I should work on getting my grades up
Also me 5 minutes late: WhAt pHiL SKatES?!
looking forward to Bills with Phil where you teach us accounting and tax filing
Nice Phil. I have a similar one in my garage. Easy fix to bring the coping up is just run a small strip of ply under the coping to raise it up.
That’s not a bad idea. I’ve been thinking about something similar fix. I’ll play around with it
Sweet!! Hey, you could always build an overhanging rock climbing wall over the miniramp...
Very wise dude. Stay out the way and be safe and enjoy the ramp!
You guys be ok ands hugs from the 🇬🇧
Love the videos Phil! I hope you guys stay safe and we all need something to try and maintain our sanity nowadays!!!
Cool. You're probably the first person to build a mini ramp before learning to push proper. Also the plywood goes the other way ;)
Every pass, you're driving over the seams with enough force to eventually chip the edges and cause yourself a lot of problems. Google skateboard+pebble to see what I mean
What do you mean other way? Like long ways not width?
@@StanleyKubick1 There's no right or wrong here, just advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that of using is bends a lot easier. The disadvantage is it's less durable. If it becomes a problem, I can resurface it or add a 3rd layer of a better quality plywood.
Mongo is a lifestyle, not a skill level. I'll still make fun of mongo pushers though.
You skateboard too? Man, you're so cool!
Not too often. I did a lot more when i was a teenager. It's just nice to pick up from time to time, but I've never been very good.
Oh! I so need to build a mini ramp for my kids (read; for myself) 😁
Phil’s world is pretty cool
good job!
Hey, Phil,
I hope you are well and just enjoying a slower pace with the new year. Just hadn’t seen you for awhile. Best to the Mrs.!
Next step- building a Megaramp in my garage!
Phil: I'm not super good at skateboarding
Builds mini-pipe in garage
Phil next spring: So, I'm going to become a pro skater as well as MTBer...
Nice build man
Phil is a man of many Skills 🚲🛹⛷
New podcast idea: chills with phill where
You read scary mountain biking stories
haha
or thrills with phil
@@Oskar-nt2gf oh yeah that’s a good one
27:35 says it all. that's awesome.
Phil you should make some bmx videos to that would be cool 💪
Well done! We’re moving to Vermont very soon and have this same idea in mind. Thanks for the tips and quality build lapses.
This entire video could just be a black screen and I would still watch the whole thing
same
That doesn’t make much sense
so many skills
I love how small Phil’s miter saw is
So tempting to build one in my warehouse....
If I had higher ceilings, I'd build something much bigger!
I mountain bike and skate as well this is amazing fill keep it up
I spy a brand new bike hanging up, still wrapped up in protection?
Yup, La Bomba Dirt Jumper. Waiting on a set of wheels to come in before building it.
@@SkillsWithPhil can't wait for that build!
Good workmanship on the ramp! I was thinking blown in insulation for the inside area would fill better you can rent a blower for it. You can also fill the coping with spray foam after you screw it down. Cheers!
I went with this insulation due to cost, and the fact they don't create a huge mess. I was thinking about the spray foam for the coping, but honestly the coping is rather quiet but that might be due to the fact that it doesn't stick up enough to make great contact with the trucks.
Build a bouldering wall next! Storage for bikes can go behind/inside the wall.
I really wanna see you wallride that garage wall Phil
It's on my mind, but that's a lot of lateral force on the garage wall, which wasn't built with that in mind. It's had to get enough speed with the current setup.
@@SkillsWithPhil Yeah for sure. Keep up the great content man. Lovin’ it!
You should try to do some glade skiing\boarding videos on your property as well. I've always wanted to make my own skicross trail, but everything gets taken down by the city after a week of riding my initial table tops, or destroyed by snowmobilers who thought my jumps would be fun too.
I think there's room for jibbing but there's not enough continuous steep pitch to have glades. We'll be out there playing around for sure though.
Phil you should build a mini rock wall in your garage it would be epic!
I thought about it, but I probably won't. It's more enjoyable to climb problems set by people who know what they are doing.
This is low key fire love the builds
Great stuff
Love it dude ! Looks like so much fun !!!
Please build a bouldering wall too!
I wish they would bring back the old school hi top Five Tens! All my Five Tens that are more than 2 years old have big ole holes in them. Your hi tops must be older then that! How are they holding up?
Yeah, these are the 5'10 line kings, from circa 2013. I have no idea if there were any differences between these and the freerider hi-tops. I bought 2 sets on clearance. They are starting to show their age. I don't use them for riding, just casual wearing.
Freaking awesome!!!!
Turn the ramp the other way and then you can add more flat bottom.
Overall length it's good to go with around 22ft
I've just bought a scateboard as i can't climb at the moment and used to enjoy it. Don't have the space for that unfortunately!
why is phil good at everything?!
Name idea: chill with Phil
nicee mini ramps lookin good!
Mini rocker ramp still have that little bike.
Your so great
Why didnt you build a boulder wall? You have an awesome garage for it!
I considered it, but I was more excited about a miniramp. Setting good routes is not easy, I’ll leave that to people who know what they are doing.
Black iron pipe at Home Depot makes good coping
There was a few reasons why I didn't go with that but it mainly came down to noise. PVC is a lot quieter which I prefer.
Aaron Kyro style riding the mini ramp
Have you thought about adding skate lite as a top layer?
If this was outdoors I'd consider it, that stuff is expensive and not worth it for this. Besides, I've always preferred the feel of riding plywood over skatelite/ramp armor.
Where you live, you're going to miss the ability to get at least one car indoors.
Considering we’ve gone our whole lives without a garage, I think we’ll be fine.
You lost all the attachments for your shop vac? Me too!
It was just the hose and nothing else.
You Should Get Skate Lite It could help with the smoothness of the ramp
It's also very expensive. Oddly enough I like the feel of plywood over skatelite.
@@SkillsWithPhil Have you looked into masonite? Its not too expensive and if you fall on it you'll just slide instead of tearing your skin on the plywood.
@@MidWestMTB Masonite was super popular in the 80/90s for skateparks. It's a great feeling surface, but masonite dust is actually pretty nasty stuff. So far the plywood has been fine.
What's the distance from coping to coping? One side to the other.
TBH I'm not totally sure. It's pretty tight. I think there's ~6ft of flat between the transitions. Ideally I would have liked to add another 4-8ft of flat but I was trying to compromise and not totally take up the garage since i used it for other things too,
I've since dismantled it and reused the lumber elsewhere, otherwise I'd give you an exact number.
Phil: Try’s to help the spider
Me: Imma curb stomp this thing rn
You are crazy man =))) lol, nice home ramp. If you want to have a fun, go to Phil garage
Do you have plans
I saw this on tictok is it actually you on that tictok?
Yeah, that’s my Tiktok.
Mini ramp/mouse house.
We've got our cat Smokey for that.
@@SkillsWithPhil might have to build a mini ramp for smokey to help them burn off the extra calories haha. Love the build Phil!
Lmao I love it
Do a kickflip!
22:35i think i see a new bike in the backround...
First
I wish my channel had even a quarter of the subs you have😔
Don’t you need to get your car in the garage
Nah, they can stay outside.
