    The ramp you left/donated at virginia key is my absolute favorite. I've learned to jump on it (falling a few times but finally getting some pretty good air) and I will practice on it for hours. It sucks I never got to meet you personally and thank you for it but hopefully you see this message 😊

    Overall great build and ideas, but one thing I believe that might clean things up is on the metal if you counter sink the screws, rolling opposite onto the ramp then metal coping might catch due to those screws sticking out to grab you skateboard wheels. Good job Seth.

      When you lift the plywood out of the truck it bends? We bought a 23/32 thinkneass and it doesn’t bend at all so then we went and got 19/32. We live in Colorado and it’s very dry here. We have sprayed the wood with water in and off for two hours and it’s not really bending. The bottom screws popped out... what are we doing wrong?

    • @kainpwnsu
      @kainpwnsu 4 года назад +1

      @@micheleamidon6281 I think I ended up getting 11/32, which is 1/3 inch thick, because I was worried anything thinner would break. It took a LONG TIME to bend (I live next door in Utah). About 4-6 hours seems about right (I did it in 1 hour and cracked the top.) Lots of water and patience is required.

    For reference: drywall screws are super hard and brittle. If things loosen up at all don't be surprised if you start shearing a bunch of them off. I would recommend deck screws all the way.

    Just built my first ramp. I see many more in my future😂
    I opted for 1/4” plywood and 2x2s spaced at 6”. Very strong!
    Ratchet strap and weights helped bend it after soaking it. Be careful not to sink screws in too far when the wood is wet 😬
    Haven’t attached the plate yet but it definitely would benefit .
    Just my two cents. Thanks for the tutorial👍🏻

    I think you may have listed the wrong size plywood in the description. I bought that size (23/32) and found it incredibly inflexible. It is 4-ply, and very thick, whereas the plywood in your video looks as though it's only 3-ply, and it is very flexible even without water. All-in-all, my wood snapped and now I need to spend $40 more. So what thickness plywood is appropriate?

  • @JCintheBCC
    @JCintheBCC 4 года назад +1

    When soaking and bending the plywood, try some hot (just short of boiling) water. Opens and softens the fibers faster, just watch out with boiling water that it doesn’t hurt the glue in the ply. Otherwise, this is a super simple and great tutorial. Thanks!

    quick hack for making wood more workable and flexible, you can use hot water instead of cold to speed up the process, and placing rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle then coating the surface of the wood makes the top layer just a little bit more flexible and workable.
    I use to make wood carvings and projects as a hobby when i was a kid, and the alcohol trick would save my materials from having surface splintering and splits when shaping them into whatever piece i needed.

    Dang Seth, that system u made to transport the kicker is very impressive. U should try to get something going to produce more of these so u could sell them.👍

    When I was younger, Like 12 to 16, I wanted a ramp sort of like this. I wanted to make a back pack jump. Like a little ramp/kicker that i could easily pack on my back, and bike around town and find good locations to set it up. Thanks for sharing, This video brought back memories of my jump building/biking days !

    Seth, in the video it looks like you used a much thinner plywood than in your Materials List. My son and I used 23/32 as listed and smoked it to bend...doesn't bend well, in fact two of the five layers split, shattered, and snapped. Looks gnarly, but no problems for bikes. Also using 23/32 makes the ramp HEAVY, but very strong. For others attempting to build, consider a thinner plywood.

    Sweet ramp dude. Been getting into building some rudimentary things out of wood since getting a nice set of cordless power tools, might have to give something like this a try!

    Thanks for this! I started a mtb club for my students this year and I've been looking for things to build for them. We can't get back on our trails until the City finishes cutting down up the trees from Irma :/

    Thanks for the idea, building one for my 7 year old. I'm thinking you probably meant 11/32 plywood though.

      So did 11/32 work for you? I got 23/32 like the instructions said and after hours of hopelessly trying to bend the wood it snapped.

    Seth. Love your videos, videography, riding and ramps. I guess I'm gonna be that guy though when I say drywall screws have terrible shear strength. Just a tip to hopefully avoid a premature failure in the future. Keep up the great work.

    I did this but I used 1/4” plywood and 2x4’s - just turned the 2x4s to cover more surface area on the plywood. It was super easy to bend the plywood since it was thin and the 2x4s cover enough area that the space between them isn’t large enough for the plywood to compromise strength. I’ve even sent my E bike into hauling balls! Total cost was $25 and it’s not too heavy at all with the lighter plywood. We’ll see how long it lasts haha!
