- This is just a quick guide on how to connect your console controller to STeam Deck. For the most part I'm still using the 8BitDo Ultimate Wireless controller, but considering I have a ton of console controllers laying around, figured I'd go ahead and see how many I could get paired up. The answer was 7, and here they are:
0:00 - Intro
0:29 - Xbox One (3rd Generation)
0:47 - Xbox Series S/X
1:15 - PlayStation 3 Dualshock 3/SIXAXIS)
1:48 - PlayStation 4 Dualshock
2:05 - PlayStation 5 DualSense
2:22 - Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons
2:40 - Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
3:16 - Outro

I just got my Steamdeck OLED yesterday and hadn't paired my PS5 controller to it yet, I couldn't remember the button combo on the remote and hadn't taken the time to google it yet. Perfect timing on this video, thank you!
Congrats on the new deck, Jeff! Glad this was helpful :)
Very helpful! I love that it had timestamps for each type of controller and got to the point quickly
Glad to hear it! :)
It's always good to see a quick and easy tutorial on stuff that is good to know and that are not necessarily explained by the company who releases the handheld in the 1st place! And, of course, it also gives you an opportunity to flex your Cyberpunk controller 🤣! Great video and keep up the good work!
Bwahahaha flexing was a secondary advantage I assure you, Dan ;p
This might just be anecdotal but while trying to pair my Nieces Switch Pro controller with my Deck we had to turn the Switch fully off before it would connect, standby wasn't good enough. Keep up the good work :)
Appreciate it, hippy! I'll keep that in mind if I go back to the Pro controller :)
Quick question can I have like one wired Xbox controller and two PlayStation controller running at same time? And another is the 8Bitdo Ultimate 2.4G Wireless Controller the same thing where I just hold down a button and look in the Bluetooth section? I am just covering the bases because I am about to buy one. Also fantastic video :)
As far as I know it should work! Haven't heard of anybody having problems with disparate controllers/connections. Appreciate the kind words and hope you enjoy it, Jack!
There is one note about the Xbox controller, you can double tap the sync button to switch between Xbox and Bluetooth which is helpful to anyone who has an Xbox One/Series console but also uses the Bluetooth connection such as a phone. Unfortunately, this won't work with 2 different Bluetooth devices such as a Steam Deck, PC, and phone. However, you can use a micro USB (Xbox One) or USB-C (Xbox Series) cable to connect to a PC which doesn't desync unless if you have the Xbox wireless adapter connected which in this case will sync to the PC instead of the console.
For most PC games, I would recommend an Xbox controller although some games in the past few years can also support PlayStation controllers. The Switch controllers (both Nintendo and third-party) do work but may not work with most games. For example, Minecraft Bedrock Edition doesn't recognize the controller and the button assignments are broken on RPG Maker MV/MZ (Y is confirm, A dashes, and the Control Pad doesn't work), but it does work with Hogwarts Legacy which actually displays the Switch buttons even though the Steam page and the description doesn't mention about Pro Controller.
Appreciate the additional info, Gothic! Had no idea you could even switch but good to know :) Generally I stick with the 8bitdo Ultimate or the Xbox controller.
So I got a Xbox controller n don't have a cord to connect or a steam deck stand. How do I fix this??? Where do I plug it in at??? I'm so confused n annoyed 😅
@@XkX- Just hold the sync button to put it in sync mode and go to the Bluetooth settings to pair the controller. Note that Bluetooth can only be used for one device at a time.
Xbox controllers use micro-USB or USB-C cable depending on the controller and these cables can easily be purchased. Since the Steam Deck only has one USB-C port, you would have to get a USB-C dock or a Steam Deck Dock because you wouldn't be able to charge the Deck if you plugged in your controller (USB-C to USB-C). If your monitor has USB-C video and USB ports, you could also use a USB-C cable (must be USB 3.0 to get video) and connect the Xbox controller (with an appropriate cable) to the monitor.
What about the Gamesir T4 Pro? I don't have the budget for like a first party Xbox control, so the Gamesir t4 pro is what I have. How do I use it?
Totally unfamiliar so I won't be much help here I'm afraid!
I’d like a video on your docked experience!
I'll see what I can do! You mean particular games I prefer in docked mode or just, overall my approach to playing docked?
Can you play while using headphones with these controllers?
I don't think the Deck detects it as an external device for audio but I'lli try to test at some point!
Great, simple vid. Joy cons? Big oof - never gonna pair those! Such bad ergos for my sized hands.
Something I would have liked to see is a little more about controller priority. I had difficulty sometimes when switching between docked and handheld while the game is still on. Turns out, you can prioritise controllers and it was preferring input from the deck instead (to the point where it was flat out ignoring my controller in game). I could still pull up the Steam menu (using the PS or X button on the respective controllers), so it was the game ignoring the second input.
Now that I type that out, seems like an edge case and probably best left out after all. 😅
LoL yeah, I don't think I'd ever use the Joy Cons but I'm sure some people out there prefer it!
Ooooh, no that's a missed opportunity on my part! Maybe I could make a common issues or troubleshooting video someday. Something else I've run into is that the 8bitdo I use all the time has a hardware switch for X/D-input and sometimes a game plays well with one but not the other and if I have wonky performance I just need to flip that switch occasionally.
@@YourPlayer2 Cool! Need to check out the 8bitdo then. I've been physically switching between XBox and PlayStation controllers (from the last gen).
Great 👍
Glad it was helpful!

I live to serve :p
If anybody's got problems with the Switch Pro controller always loosing connection just turn off the rumble. Stays connected then. :)
Thanks for the heads-up, dumpling!
My xbox One x/s controller connects to my steam deck, and my steam deck registers it as connected, but the xbox button continues to flash, and the controller won't do anything on the the steam deck
That's odd? Steam input enabled?
Anyone else's Switch Pro have regular dropout connections? It's really annoying. Looking to get an 8bitdo when on sale as a replacement.
Look at my comment above. :)
Check out Dumpling's advice! As for the 8bitdo, still working well for me :)
Has anyone been able to Wake up their OLED Deck with their controller ?
Come to think of it I don't think I've woken up my regular deck with the controller yet! Does that work?
@@YourPlayer2 Only with the OLED at the moment, which I haven't been able to.
