Nicely done! Not sure if you stumbled onto my favorite trick with Tempi. If you are in the Mute (or SHIFT) edit page and you change the STATE selection, it does not actually take effect until you leave the Mute page. Amazingly useful live when you want to 'cue up' a STATE change and have it happen at the press of a button. Or, if a gate or CV is change through STATEs and you want it to hold onto a STATE temporarily.
Tempi is one of my next modules, I want it to control my Bitbox Mkii, which is en route to me now. (Marbles will do fine for the time being, but I don't just want the randomization - I want to completely change the speeds of different cells.) This tip looks like a hell of a good trick. Thank you. Once I get my tempi, I'll be back to this video for a refresher, so I'll see the comment again. Cheers
Once again, another ace explanation of a module which does so much more than it's product description suggest. You've just gotta love the cleverness embedded in these wonderful Make Noise modules. A very interesting alternative to Pamela.
I was pretty sure I was getting Pam's for my clock source until this video. I really like the interaction with the instrument that this thing gives! Thanks so much for the clear instruction.
You really made me shiver in anticipation for that final ‘ace’ :-). Well done as always. However, I do find these overlays of functionality (or modes) more and more frustrating the more modules I have. It really becomes quite difficult to remember every key combination you need to actually access these features once you have more than a handful of such modules.
Thanks your videos are the clearest in forms of actually learning how to use a module and explaining what you are patching up where others talk too fast and do not explain things in such detail. Another one on use of the Expert Sleepers ES-3, ES6/7 with closer details on setting things up properly in your daw and so on would I am sure be very helpful to others as I think these modules are really great. I finally got it for the most part but really had to watch and rewatch sections of that video to finally work it all out. But I also hate you because you got me into this big modular mess and now I am buried with a lot of modules and so much still to learn. Getting there slowing but surely.
I thought for sure that PNW was gonna be my clock once I start on my second row of my rack but this has now convinced me otherwise. The playability and improv potential of this is just seeming limitless! Fantastic demonstration and jams as always.
absolutely fantastic videos! I've started my adventure with modular a few weeks ago with VCV, with only barebones knowledge of sound synthesis and now I am able to brew some working compositions thanks o your channel. But the thing I adore the most are your "ah-ha" moments, when you are simply befuddled by the sound - those moments really show the love for sound and are priceless
Really helpful. Fro me, much easier to understand than the MN videos. Thx for doing this and the others. Always a fave location for tutorials and explanations.
Excellent video. For some reason, I tend to use the self-patched rotate method much more than flipping between states. You’ve reminded me I can do a lot more with Tempi.
I have a tempi, however if you plan to use the more advanced features you will be forever reaching for the manual. I use it in its most simple form which works for me.
Great video man! You just made me thinking of getting a TEMPI for fckng 2nd time. Crazy, but I sold it about the time you released this video. Bad luck I didn’t come across by the time. On the other hand now feel more ready for performing with it. Anyway..... Thanks for your videos and offer in the community Alex!
Yep, this man is a danger to our bank accounts! This happened to me when he demoed the Metropolis - after the demo, I went crazy for the Intellijel module and just had to get one no matter what! His videos should be approached with care!
Thanks John - I can certainly say that I was sceptical too, but the keystrokes quite quickly become muscle-memory imprinted (though I would need a reference for the state loading/saving keystrokes still - I have no doubt you can learn those too in time). You just have to commit to spending time with it, and it goes in!
Thank you so much for a clear explanation of Tempi’s capability. My Shared System is on its way to me and your tutorial has boosted my confidence that I’ll be able to understand it 😉. Very much appreciated.👍🏻👍🏻
this is such a great module. this is such a great video. but there is ONE THING, that module sucks at. it DOES NOT SWING, worst, if you plug an external clock, that is shuffled (aka Swing), the Tempi does NOT follow, it even become crazy and doesn't like what you are injecting into him. Tempi hates to groove, I dare you to make Tempi swing from external clock, then I could love my Tempi again :)
Agreed, great module and video! Tempi doesn’t swing because it measures the distance between two pulses to find the tempo (that’s why for instance it takes it a while longer to adjust from a fast to a slow tempo.....it has to wait for the slower pulses). A swing rhythm is lopsided and thus will constantly throw tempi off-kilter trying to adjust to the two different spaces between pulses. You can easily create a swing in tempi by phase shifting and then combining two channels that pulse at the same rate!
You can let it swing via the shift function. Take quite a fast master clock (like 16th note for example) and set clocks 1&2 (or any pair you like) to a division of the master Clock so that they have both the same speed. Activate both for shifting and patch one clock to the mod input. You can take the same clock to trigger the Instrument you want to be played with shuffle. By shifting the phase of this clock forward or backward in phase you can create a shuffle, furthermore you can use the 16 States to create increasing amounts of shuffle on the fly by turning the state knob. The faster your master clock the finer you can set the steps for your shuffled beat. I programmed one „shuffle bank“ this way with three shuffled clocks at different speeds
They're very different beasts, especially as the new Pams can do CV - The Workout is a bit more set and forget, whereas this is far more viable to interact with at a live gig. Yeah, kinda both?
@@mylarmelodies It's nice that it can still be modulated for changes by itself or with other modules. My fingers aren't acrobatic enough for on-the-fly tapping, but thankfully that knob control can centralize the changes live for all the states you make during studio time. My problem with Pam's is it's too divey. This thing would be wild paired with a Wogglebug.
Definitely the best reviewer out there, thank you ! I was wondering if it's more a studio module or a live module ? This is something especially to " sequence " drums ? :-) . I have to say I'm VERY tempted ! Thank you

My favorite design model for every interface is "one button - one action". Seems here they went a little crazy with number of different key combinations per button. That is what I really dislike about my elektron octatrack - makes you think a lot about key combos while improvising.
Great video as usual! Is Tempi kind of similar to Euclidean Circles (EC) except you get perfectly even divisions? It seems both can be used as pseudo-sequencers (More so EC since it doesn't have perfect divisions and you can link channels, although with Tempi perhaps you can emulate that using multiple channels for one voice and leveraging mod?). What are the major differences between Tempi, EC, and a traditional sequencer? You may have covered this in the video but it's a lot of information -- if so, sorry!
Yeah in a sense it is a BIT like EC functionally in that you step through different divisions as it were and you get different patterns, but Tempi is just putting out even divisions whereas EC makes patterns proper. As Tempi can be voltage controlled then you can start to get more pattern like gates out of it. You could connect EC directly to a drum module and get beats, whereas Tempi you’d connect to the clock input of a drum sequencer most practically...

tempi's state jumbling functionality is my favorite feature. here's a video i made when i first discovered the power of the jumble: ruclips.net/video/JEUlfkVTQio/видео.html
I'll say it: I still can never remember whether I'm supposed to hold A or B or both or tap them or double tap one or both or hold one and tap the other or push one and then push 5 and then hold them both and then throw it in the garbage
I have decided that none of those other features exist. I *can* remember that A is divide and B is multiply. I can also remember how to do Mute and Mod. And that's it. There is no more.

Well that judgement does depend a bit on how much of the functionality you want to master - the core elements - making clocks run and slipping them, rely on the most basic of knowledge. Ironic having polyrhythms in the demo, bc Maths modules not known for their percussive sounds. More oozey, right? Wait, are the hats missing from his mix? ☹️Hard to see the module during states portion between hands and cables. With video editing, why not cross fade clean module view with patching view, so you see through the hands? Ben has meaty hands, better in his vids 😂
