Very helpful, 6 years late but lol, I’m a rock fisherman from Sydney , now living in north east Thailand trying to get my head around catching giant snakehead, I’m definitely buying a bait caster, some of these creeks are very tight with vegetation.. cheers mate ✌️
One type of cast no matter how many times I’ve tried I just can’t seem to master😂 even the arrow cast has me baffled. Had a young fella 14-15 cruising up the creek past me the other week casting like a pro and all I could do was applaud😆
Just got s baitcaster a few months back and spent a few months trying to learn how to skip cast man, iv spent a few hours everyday flicking for bass and never had much luck but as soon as you brought out this episode iv started to get some great results brother, cheers for givin me the confidence to use the “BC” now and my next plan is to start chasing big muzz cod in a few weeks time. 😏💪🏼🎣
Shaun Kilby bro I can’t tell ya how good it was to read this comment. So stoked to hear ur keen and gonna give it another crack. The pay off is insane once u dial her in. ;) good luck mate. Stoked it’s got you pumped
Haha cheers bro, honestly can’t thank you enough mate.. even if iv got a little cheapy BC it works just gotta take time and that’s about it haha, also just curious if your gonna go to the Ipswich lure&fly show this year?
Awesome vid. I learned with a 7' abu vanguard 3-7kg medium action crank rod. I found it great to get speed by long sweeping motion, constantly accellerating (just like a fly cast) to load the rod and concentrating on getting the bait travelling as paralell as possible to the water. A shorter rod is definitely better for accuracy though.
Cheers Brent. Lures with a flatter or broader profile are better than slim little bullet shaped plastics. It’s more to heavy a weight with the plastic that’ll make it a challenge. ;) go light and get ur confidence and skills going from there
Hi John, another great video. Have started targeting Barra as they drop out of the Mangroves and quickly realised that my standard overhead or sidecast no matter how accurate was totally not going to cut it. I noticed that the skip starts as a roll cast, thanks for the tips. Have noticed that the Yanks generally recommend ~50lb braid, is this helpful or do I stick with 30lb?
Terrific video. Beginner guidance on mastering spinning gear before transitioning to baitcasters is excellent advice. The Dobyn website lists the length of the FR703SF spinning rod as 7 ft. but the rod in the video "appears" to be much shorter. Just checking to verify the length before purchasing.
Great video mate I really love the method not really much use for my style of fishing here in the UK but you never know!? Loved the twat on a jet ski comment that's definitely something we have got in common here in the UK! 😂😂😂👍
Tips very useful.. would the internal weights be adjusted on the curado.. I am in Cairns with a bucketload of mangroves which leave large areas in a non casting postion, this hopefully will solve & increase my catch rate.. thanks very much. 😎🇦🇺👍👍👏👏👏
What would you call that boat set up? Like a bass dinghy? Has a trolling platform but still tiller driven? That would be perfect where I'm at in the states
Every time I watch one of your vids I want to go out and buy a bag of the soft plastic your using hahahaha I guess thats the idea :)but really you have put me onto some awesome plastics that arnt available in my local shops so would never have known about them.
The best advantage to skip fish is the center of gravity on a fishing kayak standing on a boat or on a bank is nothing compared to sitting on a kayak especially if the seat is higher than most kayaks , I recently got a feel free kayak and my fishing technique has improved dramatically
did you get the Dobyns Fury rod in Australia, mate? How do you know whether a rod is 80/20 in terms of a soft tip and stiffer mid section? What reel are you running on that? I don't think you mention the brand, like you do the Curado for the baitcaster. And it's interesting that the baid is olive, rather than a bright colour. Is that for stealth in the creeks?
Thor_68 yeah mate. Got the fury in AUS. They’re awesome. It’s about 80/20 and only by feel.. it doesn’t have it written.. I just picked it up and felt the softer tip and thought boom! The final number on the code 703 tells you how heavy the action is. Out of 5. The fury has a Stradic on it and the curado is on a shimano bass raider 3-6kg. ;) braid is either powerpro or a stained castaway I think. ;)
I run different stuff depending on Bass or Jacks. 14-20lb because it’s deep in the cover and you need to haul hard to get them out ;) a lot of the difference is in the weight or the plastic weight.
Hi , really like all your great fishing videos, you have cost me a lot in new lures, lol. I’ve started to get into skip casting, what size is the weed less weighted hook you use on the 4 inch ecogear Balt, thanks, Dwayne
Hi John, just wondering what the song was in the edit at the starting part. Was a very helpful video and has helped me increase my accuracy on skipcasting with a baitcaster. Cheers, Nick
Nick Kenny Fishing hi Nick. Thanks for your feedback mate. I’m away from my computer tonight but I’ll make sure I get the link up on it in the next few days. I got it from SoundCloud.
Help.... am a keen fisherwoman and need to know in isolation remote what knot did you tie the lure with? Loop knot? Am going practicing this weekend. Love your videos very educational. Hope you get your shed cleaned up hahahaha
Hi mate. I use 1/4 of the breaks but a lot of thumb feathering on the way into the snag. It’s a lot of practice and a rod with some softer action in the tip ;)
Very helpful video mate! just a quick question... Would it make a difference what braid you used, say would it be easier to skip cast with 20lb braid rather than 30lb braid?
Cheers Joel. I use a robust 20lb called bionic braid. It’s thicker than most so either 20/30 would be fine. It’s mostly the trick to get the plastic weight and shape right
Gday Luke. They’re both awesome. The DC is a bit noisy for my liking to be honest but I’ve fished with it and seen her in action and the cast control is pretty impressive. I love my stock ones and love the thumb feathering feel for each cast myself. The DC is probably saving a few blokes some headaches and birdies though. Hahah
I saw in a clip you had a center mounted trolling motor thru your kayak hull...does that steer efficiently enough or did you have to use your rudder too?
Gday Todd. I use the rudder to steer as well. It makes it a complete weapon in the water to be honest. Without any kind of keel it might be interesting and want to torque about a bit. When I have the rudder up it tends to drift a bit. You would be ok with a dropped keel at the rear no worries.
For me very difficult on my kayak but you make it looks easy thanks for tips. Is that a diy trolling motor set up or did the kayak come like that with the motor in the yak already built in? keep up the great vids im subscribing...Ken in Oakley, N. Cal
It's so important to land that bait right on the water line at the bank....not 1 foot or 2 feet out but right on the water line can make the difference between getting bit or not
Hey mate. I just a bait caster. I got a abu Garcia revo4 x reel. And a diawa tatula 6,10 5-9 kg 30ld braid and leader. Just wondering if you think that's ok for skip casting
G'day mate. Got it sussed out. What helped was that before I was trying to peg it in the cover. Instead letting the rod load up and unload when it was low and ready for the water. Thanks again legend.
You can make them jump, some of them. I’ve got a couple of surface lures that are heavy in the back end that you can bounce under cover but it’s a bit more of a shoot and see.
With the free fall speed of the lure...can this be thumbed or does it need to be set on the reel? Also with overheads that have adjustable cast weights, what's your recommendation in that regard? I'm running a Abu Revo4 premier and just looking at giving skip casting a go with it
Ok so I can skip my lure like crazy and drive it in anywhere but I birds nest every single time and I can’t figure out why??!! Someone please help me!! Even with my breaks on all the way and spool tight, thumb on the line stopping it when I want, it fouls up every time it skips against the water and a long skip will completely destroy my line and I’ve had to cut it off my reel before. Unless someone can tell me what I’m doing wrong I’ll never do it again it’s just not worth the hassle.
I haven’t used one as yet but I’m pretty keen. It might be a case of , if you’ve got your casting dialed it might not be needed, I’ll be keen to hear what the talk is around how it can let rip for skipping ;)
You should give it a try, you will be amazed how good they skim...i went and tryd skipping my baitcaster with a 80mm Squidgie Whipbait and 1/32oz and 1/24oz with good results but I can only manage around 25-30m cast and the bait only skips twice... one skip near my feet and the other 25m away then 1 more skip if im lucky and that will go 100mm-200mm....
My son Sachin would like to say he got some good skip casting ways to get better. You've got this 7 year old boy addicted to fishing well done.
Very helpful, 6 years late but lol, I’m a rock fisherman from Sydney , now living in north east Thailand trying to get my head around catching giant snakehead, I’m definitely buying a bait caster, some of these creeks are very tight with vegetation.. cheers mate ✌️
That’s awesome Dave! Something I wanna try for sure over there mate. Good luck
One type of cast no matter how many times I’ve tried I just can’t seem to master😂 even the arrow cast has me baffled. Had a young fella 14-15 cruising up the creek past me the other week casting like a pro and all I could do was applaud😆
barnold2085 that hurts.
Me too, I've been practicing a few weeks.
Hahaa. That’s brilliant ;)
barnold2085 what's the arrow cast?
Brilliant demonstration on skip casting techniques. And, this method does catch fish in tight cover. Thanks for sharing mate 👍
My pleasure mate. Stoked you enjoyed watching it. Such a lot of fun in the right cover hey
Couldn't agree with you more mate. Keep them vids coming 👍

I’m planning on going mate. Might catch you there. Probably the Saturday I’m hoping. ;)

A shorter rod is definitely better for accuracy though.
I’m gonna have to give a longer rod like that a go... maybe it’ll take me deeper into the crazy stuff where the big fish live :)
Incredible skills. Backhanded skip casting is amazing. What lures should I avoid trying to skip? Thanks for the great video!!
Cheers Brent. Lures with a flatter or broader profile are better than slim little bullet shaped plastics. It’s more to heavy a weight with the plastic that’ll make it a challenge. ;) go light and get ur confidence and skills going from there
InstaBlaster...
Thanks John. Perfecting now for my next Hinchinbrook trip.
David Love it’s a game changer for up there ;)
Thanks for the video! Will your glide baits work with this? They look good great and are coming to Darwin with me in March!
Very helpful video mate. Thanks for making it from Dan In QLd happy fishing
Stoked you got something from it Dan ;) cheers mate and good luck with it eh
Great video! Hello from Kansas, USA!

Gday Norm. Thanks for watching ;) yep the spinning outfit is 7ft. My little baitcasting Bass Raider is only 5’6.
Good video . Will put some of your tips into action over the weekend and see what comes .
Cheers .
Good luck mate. ;) thanks for watching
Love your vids

That was awesome mate! Thanks!
david fernandes good to hear ur into it

Good to hear. Hope it’s working ima great for you. I use none or one of the gears on.
I'm getting there with my hrf. Actually been trying to skipcast swimbaits and getting some success!
ProFishermanBo 1 good to know mate ;)

Totally feel the same mate. A raised seat in a yak is killer eh
Completely agree, gives you a huge advantage, I’ve only skipped with spinning but the baitcaster is coming out tommorow 🤘🏼
did you get the Dobyns Fury rod in Australia, mate? How do you know whether a rod is 80/20 in terms of a soft tip and stiffer mid section? What reel are you running on that? I’m glad you got something from the video ;)
excellent tips, particularly on rod length.
Thanks some really good advice mate awesome RUclips channel

Cheers Sam ;) the fishing here is great. You’ll love the place
thanks for the reply I actually want to come for the four wheeling.. catching a barra or two on the fly would just be a bonus
Man I thought your skip casting tips were amazing and the set up is a savage gear bait caster and it a smooth reel
Thanks mate stoked you’re hear you’re enjoying my videos
Thanks, best explanation & tips I've been able to find.
Thanks a lot mate. Hope it helps ;)
Mate you are fantastic thank you just starting out it's great
Great to hear Graham. Cheers mate ;)
Hi , really like all your great fishing videos, you have cost me a lot in new lures, lol. I’ve started to get into skip casting, what size is the weed less weighted hook you use on the 4 inch ecogear Balt, thanks, Dwayne
Hi Dwayne. Thanks for your interest in my channel. The 4/0 worm hooks are my go to. 5/0 is also sweet ;)
Thanks John, keep up the great videos
Thievy best vid for this. Thanks so much
Stoked you got something from it mate ;)
What’s the song called in this song John ?
Help.... am a keen fisherwoman and need to know in isolation remote what knot did you tie the lure with? Loop knot? Am going practicing this weekend. Love your videos very educational. Hope you get your shed cleaned up hahahaha
how many breaks do you use? I'm from brunei darussalam... i love baitcasting.. I just want to learn skipping😁😁😁
Hi mate. I use 1/4 of the breaks but a lot of thumb feathering on the way into the snag. It’s a lot of practice and a rod with some softer action in the tip ;)
ok i will try every day...thank you so much for your help.. 😍👍👍👍
Good luck mate
Really good tip. Thank you very much
Amit Upadhya great to hear you like the tips. Thanks for your feedback ;)
great tip👍👍by the way what is the title of this song..😊
Mingz Hanzeal thanks mate. I’ll have to get the title and post it in the notes.
ok thank mate..have a nice day..🙋
This makes me sick you make it look so freaking easy keep the videos coming
Haha. Cheers Jamey. Plenty of editing in RUclips vids bro ;)
are u able to use small light hardbody lures ? if so may that change the effect of the SKIP CAST
Definitely would change its effect. ;)
would you be able to try it then tell me ? if no dramas
It’s mostly the trick to get the plastic weight and shape right
Thanks for the reply. Keep the videos coming they are awesome!
Hey mate, love your videos just wondering if you would recommend a curado or curado dc for skip casting approximately 4 inch plastics
Hahah
The DC is a fair bit more pricey too. So it’s a bit of a stretch for mine
mylurebox cheers mate 🤙
What type of trolling motor are you using
I saw in a clip you had a center mounted trolling motor thru your kayak hull...does that steer efficiently enough or did you have to use your rudder too?
Gday Todd. I use the rudder to steer as well. It makes it a complete weapon in the water to be honest. Without any kind of keel it might be interesting and want to torque about a bit. When I have the rudder up it tends to drift a bit. You would be ok with a dropped keel at the rear no worries.
I’ll put a video together in the coming weeks to show it off I reckon.
what size probraid should i get for skip casting for bass. Thx
What is the lure you are using on the baitcaster? What pound braid do you recommend?
For me very difficult on my kayak but you make it looks easy thanks for tips. Is that a diy trolling motor set up or did the kayak come like that with the motor in the yak already built in? keep up the great vids im subscribing...Ken in Oakley, N. Cal
Cheers mate. The elevated seat makes it a lot easier. It’s a diy motor mod. Super lucky fit ;)
Hi, I just paid for your DVD but I can’t access it? Can you please help me access it.
Hi John. I’ve just emailed you the link you need. Let me know if you have any further dramas and we can sort it no worries.
Cheers legend! Let me know if you ever want a Kayak fishing buddy, I have beginners luck. ;)
Thanks for the great tips
Adam Threlfall stoked u got something from it
I use curado dc and thanks fr ur guidance
Do u reckon the shimano bass raider is a good skip casting rod cause I have that rod and would a weedless z-man diesel minnow work
Mate that’s what I use : )
Ok good to know that I didn’t waste $150 on nothing
I use a 5’8 abu rod will that work ?
Great tips thanks heaps 👍
Barry Palmer glad to hear u like it Barry
Hi John, do you have any videos on how to rig these 2 soft plastics, frog and zmann for weedless using those weedless hooks
Thanks
Geoff
Great video!
It's so important to land that bait right on the water line at the bank....not 1 foot or 2 feet out but right on the water line can make the difference between getting bit or not
what is the best ratio to skip cast?
Hey mate. I just a bait caster. I got a abu Garcia revo4 x reel. And a diawa tatula 6,10 5-9 kg 30ld braid and leader. Just wondering if you think that's ok for skip casting
Perfect mate ;) get some 3 inch or bigger plastics with super light or no weight and start playing around. 1/4 oz or so is sweet
@@mylurebox cheers mate. I'm new to baitcasting. Do you rate the gear I bought. Was quite expensive but doesn't always mean it's good qauilty?
Yeah mate. It’s the goods ;) Abu and Diawa are safe bets ;)
@@mylurebox thanks for ya help I'll get back to you when I'm skipping like a pro like you cheers john
G'day mate. Got it sussed out. What helped was that before I was trying to peg it in the cover. Instead letting the rod load up and unload when it was low and ready for the water. Thanks again legend.
Can you skip cast hard body lures at all?
You can make them jump, some of them. I’ve got a couple of surface lures that are heavy in the back end that you can bounce under cover but it’s a bit more of a shoot and see.
Yeah I’ve had a crack 😂
Some people can. KVD skips crankbaits... craziest thing ever.
Great tips mate!
Will Kitching stoked to know u rate it ;)
Mate I've been rating your stuff for almost 5 years now ;)
Thanks Will. I’m here for the long haul but really appreciate your interest since I got it started mate. Cheers. Hope it’s helped in some way ;)
awsome video very helpful
Good to hear Richard ;)
best caster in the world
With the free fall speed of the lure...can this be thumbed or does it need to be set on the reel?
Also with overheads that have adjustable cast weights, what's your recommendation in that regard?
I'm running a Abu Revo4 premier and just looking at giving skip casting a go with it
Thx Perfect Viedeo, greating from Germany , finesse_dome 😊

Tolong upload video how to cast with spinning reel... I like spinning reel. Your skill amazing, isnpirasi buat saya
Mende awak cakap ni??
Do you find it's easier to skip cast while sitting down in a kayak with a baitcaster rather than a spinning reel?
Yeah mate. Easier cause I’m more used to it and a shorter rod too. A lot of it depends on what you’re used to and what size lures I’m throwing.
Wow!
thanks mate.
Gustfulldraw 77 glad you got something from it ;)
"Twat on a Jetski". Is there any other type on a jetski?
New subscriber here, I could hear you talk & be content 😁😁 & thanks for the tips too 😉
So..how do i skip with a spinning reel??🤔🤔🤔
I’ve got a few vids on this stuff through my channel. It’s worth learning eh
0:50 That cast man...
Nice master...
Thank you sir. It’s good fun
amazing
Great now I’m addicted to skip casting😫
Amigo de quantas libras são essas varas, de molinete e carretilha?
You made it lake a art
Cheers Jim. I love it.
Wow......👍🙏🤝✌️
Hey mate what's the sound track to this video I love it
Ok so I can skip my lure like crazy and drive it in anywhere but I birds nest every single time and I can’t figure out why??!! Someone please help me!! Any thoughts on the Shimano DC models to skip easier
I haven’t used one as yet but I’m pretty keen. It might be a case of , if you’ve got your casting dialed it might not be needed, I’ll be keen to hear what the talk is around how it can let rip for skipping ;)
here we have the pro fisherman in its natural habitat (davit adembrough)
Cheers mate. Totally frothing the heavy structure ;). Great comment to get me laughing late night watching the footy.
Interesting. Most videos recommend a 7 to 7'3 rod to skip
Nice pants
As kids me and a mate had comps between us 2, to see who could do the longest skip with Tazzie Devils on spin when the trout weren't on the chew....
Mate that’s so cool!! Such awesome lures ;)
I like that boat lol
And I thought I could handle a spinning rod :D
Like that you're using Z-Mans, because of their degradability!
Hahaaa. Cheers mate. They’re awesome for skipping those frogZ hey.
Haha bloody jet skiers, wouldn't of thought you would get them up a creek like that
Will Henderson couldn’t believe it the same eh.
