    The thing with Allen Iverson is that he was more of a media phenomenon than he was a great player. He was beloved for a couple reasons. First, women embraced him, particularly in the black community, because of his swag and style. Iverson ushered in a hip-hop vibe as well. Also, he was a giant killer. He produced more with less. Everyone always roots for David and against Goliath.

    I'm sorry Rusty but you are showing why analytics is ruining the NBA (mad respects to you though, long time subscriber). People don't take into account contextual biases with whatever the numbers are showing you. If you didn't grow up watching basketball in the late 90's -00's then you would know why Iverson is so respected. Defenses were much more suffocating and allowed to get away with hand checking, hard fouls, and dominated by big men. He played so many minutes because his team was so offensively inept. You say his per-36 suggests inflated stats, while I suggest he could have been more efficient if he played less minutes -every game was basically playoff intensity for Iverson. The paint was highly compacted and you can't judge his team based on spacing and 3-pt because that wasn't basketball in the early 2000's. The difference between the top shooting 3-pt team and the worst shooting 3-pt team wasn't that huge back then and coaches benched players for taking 3's over a shot in the paint. Iverson was one of the most dominant guards the NBA has ever seen and they resorted to aggressively containing him. If he had another superstar quality player to back him up, his percentages would have been higher, and you saw that when he played with Carmelo Anthony.
    The idea that you can just use analytics to look at the numbers of players from back in the day and compare them today retroactively ignores the fact that statistics is flawed and open to interpretation. I'm an accountant that deals with numbers all the time and have to analyze the context behind statistics. The fact that an undersized guard had this great mid-range repertoire that can finish at the rim against skyscrapers makes him pound for pound one of the best players in NBA history. Plus he was a decent defender with quick hands for his position at the time who gave a lot of effort on that side of the ball. The analytics will always favor recent players because the game is played this way.

      @serenadesilhout 4 года назад +60

      @@rustybuckets You mentioned the context of spacing, but still seemed to penalize AI for the fact that spacing was different back in those days. Any argument about why his teams were bad at 3's has nothing to do with his abilities as a player. If anything that just reflects the time period, his teammates, and the coaching style. It doesn't create a compelling reason for suggesting why A.I. is overrated as a player.

    • @serenadesilhout
      @serenadesilhout 4 года назад +33

      @@samhartje723 Numbers is just an observation, how you interpret it can still be flawed. There's many things that don't show up in a boxscore that contributes to a team's success and qualities that can't be measured such as competitiveness or leadership.

    @Ben-hl5mu 2 года назад +7

    Good spacing or not, nobody who shoots 42% from the field and 30% from 3 in their prime is an 'elite' scorer in my opinion. Those numbers are literally below average even for the era. When the teams you're playing against have team-wide efficiencies better than you, you're not a great scorer.

It was the weak east, 76ers defensve, and occasionally iversons offense. for example, philly won game 6 wit Iverson going 5-27 in game 6 vs bucks. To close Toronto in game 7, Iverson went 8-27 and was outscored by Aaron Mckie but 76ers still won. In game 3 vs Milwaukee, Iverson didnt even play and 76ers only lost by 6. Iverson was a 10/10 scorer but needed to ball hog and shoot alot to do it. For example on the Nuggets, there were 7 12+ ppg scorers but Iversons style couldnt play along side denver. Infact, Denver got better after trading Iverson to detroit for Billups, when Detroit got worse. As a short guy I loved AI's game. It was nice to see a little guy get out there and show the giants what's what. However, as a basketball fan I always found AI's game to be rather selfish an myopic. To be blunt if AI had been better about moving without the ball and had gotten his teammates involved more he would have won more and they would have probably gotten at least one title. I remember many games where AI was screwing around with the ball while all of his teammates stood stock still because he wouldn't get them involved. Part of the problem was he was insanely gifted and talented and could get away with a lot of it by riding his raw abilities. Had he been more diligent with practice and workouts (and not about going out and clubbing), and been a better example to his teammates (especially the young guys), and more committed to working as a part of the system things would have gone a lot better for him.

    Not bad . Although did you consider how the extra minutes caused him to endure more injuries as well as negatively effect his efficiency. Playing 42 min also forces you to share he floor with the bench more than the other stars he is compared to. Finally , just wondering why you are so easily considering that having EXTRA HELP may have reduced the larger numbers but not considering they would have increased his efficiency significantly?

    As a Sixers fan who watched every game in 2000-01, they were not the same team after the Dikembe trade (I remember it was debated on talk radio everyday when the trade went down).
    The Sixers were 41-14 at the time of the trade with the best record. Trading Ratliff for Dikembe is not the problem, throwing in Kukoc is where the trade went wrong. Kukoc was the only legit scoring threat after Iverson as he would come off the bench and keep a team from making a run while Iverson was resting.
    The team went 14-12 in regular season after the trade, and went 12-11 in the playoffs so they were essentially a .500 team post Kukoc.

    This is why I hate my fellow millennial NBA fans sometimes because when they aren’t old enough to recall these legends playing in their primes, they can’t help but look at Basketball Reference and compare their numbers to the players of today’s era instead of their PEERS that player in the same era as them.
    AI played during the era of hand checking and when bigs were actually BIGS protecting the paint.
    Shitty and predictable argument for why Iverson is overrated when his era clearly indicates that he was one of the best among it.
    If AI is “overrated” because he played 40 plus mpg, then I guess everyone’s numbers from that era was inflated because in the 00-01 season alone, you had 13 guys playing 40 plus minutes and 22 players playing 39 mpg or more including other all time greats such as Shaq, T-Mac, J-Kidd, C-Webb, Vinsanity, Kobe, etc.

      Carmelo may actually be the most overrated player in league history. Some of it isn't his fault; he was drafted at the same time as Lebron so the comparisons were natural. It's hard to measure up against the second best (I'm a Jordan guy) player in basketball history.

And it wasn’t until the boom of “advanced analytics” that people became more of apologists for lower field goal %s and used effective fg% and ts%. And, Kobe didn’t play in an offense/system or era that called for high volume 3pt shooting. And before anyone tries to downplay Kobe’s 3pt ability, he had the record for 3s in a game with 12 3s in a game for over 10 years until Steph broke it. He could’ve easily been a 36%-40% 3pt shooter if he simply shot more. Same thing with Jordan and bird.

    I don’t think A.I. is overrated. Always injured at 5’10( he’s not 6ft) and 170lbs, he took a team to the Finals that didn’t belong in the Finals. 76ers beat MIL with Ray Allen and Glen Robinson, TOR with Vince Carter, beat IND with Reggie Miller and Ron Artest. Also giving LAL their ONLY loss in the post season. Although Mutumbo was an allstar and DPOY that year he was by no means an offensive threat. Remember the era, it was more physical and they didn’t shoot the 3 like they do now nor do they get calls like they do now.

  • @UNerdz_

    Iverson absolutely carried those defensive teams, even if your defense is elite you still have to score and Iverson did ALL of it, how you go say the Sixers were good with 1 superstar and an elite defense but the bucks were bad with 3 20ppg scorers and 2 all-star and a decent defense
    You say Iverson stats are inflated but Kobe, Harden, and Jordan are all higher than him on the all time usage rate % list
    Iverson's numbers are consistent for 12 of 14 years not matter what the construction of the team was, at that size, in that era
    If you watched Iverson play then you know without a doubt that he is a top 5 SG all time
    Take out Harden and add TMac at number 3, Iverson number 4, Wade at 5

    You know, I just realized something. I'm about 15 minutes into the video, and not once have you directly addressed his game. All you've done is try to discredit his accomplishments and his stats. You don't say he's overrated because of anything relating to his play on the court, it's all picking apart his stats and what he's done. This was even worse with the abomination that is the Stockton video. All you do is discredit the fact that he had the most assists in Basketball history by a massive margin. You only think of him as "The assists guy". You seem to think that's the only reason people hold him so high, and same hoes for Allen Iverson. You seem to think of him as 'The guy who was an amazing scorer and who had that amazing 2001 playoff run". So in response to that, you try to pick holes in his stats, prop up his team, and discredit his opponents. What you fail to understand is that all of that stuff is the proof of greatness, not why he's great. That's like saying that the 2016 Finals wasn't impressive for Lebron because the Warriors choked. Yeah they choked, but because LeBron's play was so unbelievable. You're working backwards. Same with Stockton. Saying that his assists aren't impressive because he was with Malone to discredit him is dumb because the assists are the proof of Stockton's greatness, not the cause of it. When people mention his assists as impressive, it's not just impressive because of the sheer number of assists, but because his play allowed him to get that many. Just passing the ball doesn't mean shit for assists, you have to set up your teammate for success by passing the ball at the right time and place. Stockton didn't just chuck the ball to Malone every time like you seem to think he did, he set him up for success, and that's why he was so good. Malone's career efficiency was over 50%, so that shows that Stockton got that many assists by making good passes to set up Malone consistently. But saying that the "System" is what allowed him to do it is stupid, because the system wouldn't work of Stockton wasn't that good. If there's a system to make even a good not great player rack up that many assists we sure as fuck haven't found it. That's not mentioning that Stockton did a fuckton more then just pass the ball, but that's besides the point.
    To conclude, play is the single most important thing that determines greatness, and stats are just the way of illustrating that. They lack context and don't paint anything close to that full picture. Accomplishments are very important, but you have to remember that although accomplishments are determined by level of play, level of play isn't determined by accomplishments. They need to be discussed and are a huge part of a players legacy, but saying that a certain player is overrated is in almost all cases referring to their level of quality as a player versus the common consensus of them, and using what they have or haven't done to discredit their quality as a player is stupid.
    You'll never see this, but on the small change you I do, I hope you try to do better on the future.

We all love AI because his swagger and heart being 6’0 and the way he carried himself. He was a new different kind of player we’ve never seen so people loved him. Heres a hot take.... I would rather have Ray Allen than AI on my team, even at their peaks. And I would definitely take Allen's career over AI. AI had a slightly better peak, but Ray had the intangibles and fits better with more talented players. Even when he had more spacing in Denver, it was still "his turn, my turn" 1v1 offense with Melo which is why they improved so much trading him for a real PG in Billups. You had to build a specific type of team around AI to cover his weaknesses.

    Allen Iverson isn't even 6 foot he's 5'10. He was dealt the absolute worst scenarios his team never being good. Sure people like to say dekembe was dpoy in 2001 but it means nothing to Shaq. It was literally him alone in those finals. Being the only team to beat the lakers in any game. Theyre great in defense but good offense beats good defense and when your match-up is Kobe and Shaq its almost laughable. being 5'10 guard in the early 2000s is absolutely insane. Lets say he played in this era he'd absolutely dominate. He's literally a better Kyrie.
