Talent and competitiveness didn't stop after the 90s, nor did the bravery shown in WWII ceased after that time. Saying Michael Jordan is the greatest is a profound statement, but not because today's era is weak and is talentless. I would recommend anyone to watch that video

    I'm feeling you.
Since the 1970s, I'm hearing old heads saying their era was better, they were more fundamentally sound, they were tougher, smarter and weren't playing for the love of the game. Thus, their athletes are also their GOATs.
Why not celebrating every period of time? Each decade I've seen had their great moments and their letdown, their highs and their lows.
About the futile GOAT debate... Why not saying X player dominate Y era... Because 1990s athletes never played against everyone in the NBA history and rules/strategies/tendencies/coaching philosophy are obviously different.
I'm also tired of this saying : X player would score 70 PPG if he played today [Wilt Chamberlain quote from 1997 NBA all-star weekend]...

I don't believe it. Even the greatest scorer ever Wilt Chamberlain wouldn't be able to average 50 PPG today.
It wasn't better back then. It was different.

    • @david.tousignant20

      @J D
It's a bit more complex than that. You change one rule and the entire landscape of the league change & your strategies became obsolete. The mid-range game is dead today because of the rules adopted after 2004 : abolition of the illegal defense, etc.
And don't forget what Wilt Chamberlain said to Jordan when they met in 1997... I've seen both players and Wilt Chamberlain was the best I've seen. And I don't Wilt Chamberlain would scored 70 PPG in 1997 like he stated.

Yes, but zone defenses (sagging & roaming players) also deteriorated this facet of the game... Which also explains why fewer centers are posting up right now, but guards started to add this skill on their arc.
You should watch the video I linked or start to binge watch Thinking Basketball Channel.

You're not helping your case. You're saying "it was better when I grew up", "it was bad before and after that period".
You're sounding like the old heads I was referring in the first place. People of my age was pretending their era was better than yours in the 1990s...

    • @david.tousignant20

Thinking Basketball made a podcast for his Patreon donators. He tackled this "50 PPG myth."
I highly suggest you listen to it.
I should be the one being the old man criticizing your era, not you.
Like I said. The game is different, not worse or better. Strangely, the smartest basketball minds never critize any given era or make assumptions based on their opinions. They always respect EVERY NBA greats and understand the complexity of the game.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Russell named a few guys that could dominate in any era. Those players tresceded their era. Jordan was amongst them... And we both know there are players in today's game that could dominate in any era.

Shaq was the greatest under achiever in NBA history. Phil Jackson famously wrote in his book, "If shaq had applied himself he'd have won MVP every year and they'd have renamed the Larry O'Brian to the Shaquille O'Neal trophy. The hard part was motivating him to take this seriously."

  • @Zuri_SM

The most disgusting instance of this was Shaq downplaying the phenomenal moment Luka was having vs the Clippers. Even the other guys were on him for being negative for no reason. As much as I love Shaq as a player and personality, his insecure side can be down right unwatchable at times.

    • @Zuri_SM

@Alexander the Great i disagree. i think having insight from former players always hold a bit of value, and shaq is entertaining when he isn't acting bitter or insecure. hell, i only really watch half time shows when its Shaq, Kenny, and Chuck all having a good time. But the moments where Shaq or Chuck are just bashing something about todays game are definitely annoying and need to stop.

People will have these debates and comparisons and bring people down just to bring others up and it's all for the sake of being right. And even if they are right, it takes away the enjoyment. Like why do I need to constantly watch sports or listen to music or play video games, etc with a critical lens? Why can't we just enjoy the experience?

Here's a reason why I like players commentating, they talk about plays and different offenses. And explain how that office makes certain players look good, great even and how it doesn't suit other players. Like Mike dantoni offense mixed with james harden makes inflated ground breaking numbers, same reason nash got mvp. And Gilbert arenas when he changed the wizards playbook they started winning and he was an all star for 3 straight years. Both offenses had the guard as the first scoring option. Stuff like that, normal fans wouldn't understand even pro or semi pro analysts that were not formal players wouldn't understand bc they haven't played the game as much, they either forgot being on a team in highschool and having to understand plays. Or they weren't on the team in general so they damn near leave out that aspect of the game when analyzing basketball
