It’s honestly insane how last year when he played only 20 something games everyone gushed over how good he was, and now that he’s been putting up great numbers on great efficiency with good health, he gets no attention. Part of it is because of Lamelo, part of it is because the pelicans kinda suck and have a lot of issues

It died because he got injured, then Covid happened, now there’s no fans, the pels are boring & Zion doesn’t really play highlight ball. It’s just unfortunate.
I beg to differ bro he is a blast to watch all the casuals may have turned their head towards Lamelo but Zion is a once in a lifetime talent and people and true fans know that. I never seen anyone get to the rack that easy at 20 years old and at his height. Nobody talks about his basketball iq and vision either which is definitely special.
The Pels are gonna blow up their salary cap for at least the next 5 years on the Lakers' failed loser "young core". They would've been better off letting AD play out his contract and lose him for nothing (one season of Zion+AD) than trade him for the "young core" the Lakers refused to extend. They already gave stat-padder Ingram the max. Now they'll either have to extend Ball this summer or trade him for penny on the dollar. If they had lost AD for nothing, they could've built around Zion, clear out cap space, and the Zion hype might have been able to attract elite veteran free agents.
Zion's ceiling is Larry "Grandmama" Johnson. Johnson was great in the '90s (before injuries sapped his athleticism and he reinvented himself as a role player) and formed an entertaining dual with Alonzo Mourning on the Hornets, but he was never elite and didn't take the Hornets anywhere. Mourning didn't become a winner until he went to Miami. Johnson made the 1999 NBA finals with the Knicks as a role player.
@@realniggashit3 No very very bad comparison Larry Johnson was a great player before he got hurt but he wasn't shooting 60% from the field and he was taller than Zion..Also Zion can shoot and pass way better than Larry ever could. We like to throw out these comparisons from time to time I get it but it's being kinda disrespectful to how talented Zion is. Look at his numbers he is 20 years old and playing much better than Larry ever did. He is a freak of nature y'all just have to get with the times.

It is kinda funny how Zion’s career start is basically the same as AD’s(Both very hyped coming into the league, both drafted 1st overall by the Pelicans, and both played amazingly for the Pelicans but kinda got forgotten due to the Pelicans not being a big market and not being relevant in the playoff picture)
Zion is a much better offensive player than Davis was in their first two years. Not that close of a comparison having watched both of their young careers.

Hornets need to make a bunch of moves if they ever want to be relevant after this year. Can't keep 3 true point guards on the roster that all like to create their own shot. I'd keep Lamelo and Terry then trade Devonte and upgrade from trash Zeller and Biyombo. If not they will continue to be bad and the hype will die out. Zion an the pels on the other hand need better spacers then they will be way better. I'm also not 100% sold on Ingram he is way too inconsistent so far in his career.

I would say Aldridge but he's a liability on the defensive end at this point of his career.

zion has less hype now, but it’s not dead. a lot of players aren’t getting as much hype without fans in the arena and because nbas tv viewership is down. he’s still on track to be a fantastic player.

hype definitely does die. when the player lives up to the hype it might fade a little, Hype barely even matters anymore, i mean at one point Steph Curry was just some developing role player.
Bagley and Ayton had tons of hype coming out the draft, they are both decent players but like the hype is done for now.

I’m a huge fan of Zion and want to see him succeed. The only player on the pels I really care about and hope the media stays away so there’s no outside pressure to mess with him
Hype is like energy. It doesn’t dissipate but instead transfer to a new host.
I literally think that the hype is only down because he's not doing the same insane dunks that he did in HS and at Duke. That's it. If you stop doing crazy dunks and highlight plays as much, HOH, ESPN, and BR won't post/care about you as much. Even if the Pelicans were still bad and he was doing crazy dunks night after night that he would still have the hype. It's sad to say but that's the way it is. Those platforms have the core guys they post about (Lebron, Steph, Lamelo) and Zion fell off the list, resulting in less casual fans seeing him. They know him as the dunk guy, and if he's not doing as many dunks, and if he's not getting posted, the hype dies. This might be the best thing for him though, takes some of the pressure off so he can keep getting better and developing his game in the shadows. I think he's already great

NBA fans love to overhype a player prior to him coming into the league, follow him for like half a year in the NBA, then start dismissing him if he's not in a big market or if he's not winning a lot of games in a small market. People loved Donovan Mitchell when he came into the league, then people stopped talking about him after like a year. Lonzo ball was the second coming of Jesus. Fans love their new shiny toys. Ja Morant might go down the same road if the Grizz stay where they currently are.

Probably injuries. Looks like he's playing a lot safer basketball now. He might lose hype, but his play could be the difference between getting 1 max contracts or getting 2 max contracts during his career. I couldn't see him playing very long how he was going before

Everytime i get hyped i get dissapointed ,the only one who lived to the hype and expectations i think its lebron james, everyone else has been crushed by the expectations .
Another thing about hype which you slyly touched on is age. As in the age you are when the hype comes. kids get hyped easily but as we grow and "seen it all" things become less glamorous
Ever since I was a youngster and was promised Derrick Williams would be the messiah I never buy into draft hype.
He shouldve stayed in college. Definitely for another year but I suggest for all 4 and here’s why:
1. They had a freaking camera JUST for him. All the hype he could dream of was already there
2. This season at Duke, he would’ve DOMINATED college basketball again and dragged them to the tournament this year and the hype for the entire tournament would’ve been much much higher
3. With his build, he’s the perfect college player. He could’ve gone down easily as the greatest college player of the modern day. If he stayed all 4 years he could easily have won the Naismith 2 times and likely would have a National Championship by the time he’d be a senior as well.
I get the injuries could’ve maybe influenced him decision but he was in a position to be the savior of college basketball had he stayed more years. It would’ve paid millions and millions on the back end after he graduated if he stayed at Duke all 4 years and became their greatest ever player.
People find it easier to get behind an underdog they can relate to, not some guy who’s shoved down your throat and is the next coming of Christ in the NBA

Zion’s March madness games were more watched than the 2020 nba finals he was much more hyped than lamelo
Media is looking for a human highlight reel that’s why. If Zion was doing the insane dunks we’ve all grown to love him for they’ll still be hyping him up. Obviously coming in he dealt with early nagging injuries which forced him to reevaluate his play style and it changed him for the better. Obviously he’ll dunk on you with ease without a second thought but he’s very conservative on the risk he takes. Long story short I don’t think he’s tryna end up like Blake Griffin.
