    It's like this channel is reading my mind! Mrs. Crocombe inspired me to ask for a set of copper bowls (I've made the fluffiest quiches ever with their help), and while I've been fairly diligent, they needed polishing. I had copper cleaner on my shopping list, but I tried the lemon and salt method and they look brand new! Scratch a nasty chemical compound off the list!

    Well now you have to give us a soft soap recipe .

    • @amartini51
      @amartini51 3 года назад +6

      Typical "hard" soap is fat and sodium hydroxide (lye), and maybe some salt to make it harder. If you use potassium hydroxide instead, you get soft soap, which is also good for washing clothes. Historically, you'd soak hardwood ash in water to get potassium hydroxide.

    Growing up my Nonna had beautiful silver. I LOVED polishing silverware with her. I also really enjoyed taking out all of her crystal from China cabinet and polishing and washing the wine glasses, special platters and things. We would do it every few weeks. I loved hearing the stories behind all of the items she was so proud of.

      I think at that time, the dairy maid may save some buttermilk after churn butter to relieve the chaffed hand due cleaning & hot water... or some girls maybe already use some cream on their hand every night. at that time, they already had some cream for skincare regime, so maid use cheap cream is maybe already establish

      Your hands get used to it. I work on a horse yard and I doubt much of our cleaning soaps have changed from Mrs C's day. My hands aren't soft, but they aren't bleeding either. They're also really clean from the saddle soap and hot water (no Covid here!).

    • @johannalange802
      @johannalange802 3 года назад +9

      The hot water was not the problem, the concocted lye burnt the skin to the flesh.
      Try soaking your hands in hot Vanish ( Not!) and watch for results...
