Hi! Just a tip-when you check to make sure it cut, dont hit the release button, just hit cut so that way it will recut in the exact same place! -super thick faux leather, and chunky glitter work well using the extra heavy fabric setting.
Just a tip , move the white star wheels out of the way like the cricut suggested. Sometimes they will leave noticable indentations in your vinyl. P.s. I adore you! You're great. I came across your channel and have been binge watching your tutorials. I have explored other bag making tutorials and after about a minute , it's a NOPE! I love the way you explain things , camera set up on the sewing machine ect. I'm very hard to please unfortunately but you definitely have a winning formula
Hi Jess! I teach Cricut and I use my machines to cut the marine vinyl we sell at Joann that is also kind of thick. Can I suggest using the settings to cut bonded denim for thicker vinyls. I know it sounds odd but it works like a charm. If you have any questions let me know I’m here for you.
@@slstrauss11 the setting will automatically do 2 passes. That is usually enough to go through the fabric backing and the vinyl layers. Hope that helped 👍let me know
Hi Jess, I teach Cricut classes and work at Joann. Now I can refer customers to your video. Thank you! I also use my cricut for purse pals and overlays. I use the green mat. You should also check the blade and clean out the little pieces of fabric after each cut😁
I have a question! Am I the only one who finds their mat leaves a sticky residue on their vinyl, when placing it right side down?? I've tried googling extensively, but I can't find anyone else talking about having this issue! Am I doing something wrong 😅
Those two holder things, one is for pens. So you can have it draw and then cut. I made my Christmas tags this way. It drew the design and then cut out the tag. It was great. I also made bag tags this way with faux suede.
Love the camera! Everything is so crystal clear. Thank you for showing us how to set up and use this! I have one and have had no idea how to do anything with it.
Thank you Jess for doing this video. I was happy to see that others have the Scan and Cut as well. I have not used in years. I dug it out and am going to experiment on cutting vinyl and cork as you did. I would love to use my matching for cutting out fabric for bag making,
Update: I experimented on vinyl, textured vinyl, shiny vinyl, cork, PUL and quilt cotton. Success! All I have is and old standard blade and standard mat that I wipe down and used washi tape. I started with cut settings from an old video and they worked perfectly.I did not adjust down enough for the cork and PUL, it cut the mat,but I can play with that. The old mat was not sticky enough for quilt cotton even with washi tape so did not work well. I have ordered the proper supplies for fabric cutting.I am thrilled my 5 year old Scanncut2 is up to the job. My least favorite task is cutting out fabric no matter how many times I measure I am always off. This will be a game changer. Thanks for the video, please do more!!!
I literally told my mother I wanted to find a way to bring my Air2 in to our sewing business yesterday. You opened the door with this testing vid! Thank you!
I got a Cricut Maker just before the pandemic and I wanted to use it in my sewing but I have no idea what I am doing. I have done a few paper projects and one HTV project but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE more ideas on how I can use my Marker in the bag room!!!
I have the Cricut Joy and the Maker. I have made a lot of greeting cards with the Joy. I’ve made earrings, keychains and iron-on names for some backpacks for gifts. I plan on using the svg files to cut the Pocket and Purse Pals. I had the Explorer air 2 but I sold it when I bought the Maker.
I received the Cricut Maker 3 as a Christmas present, so this is a perfect video for me! I also have the large easy press 2, but in the UK you can only get the raspberry colour! Can’t wait for more Cricut and Applique content!
I’m so happy you’re doing this!!! I have a maker but it is so good intimidating, I never use it! But really would like to learn to appliqué (then sew) onto my bags I make!!! I’m so excited for you doing this!!! THANK YOU!!!!
I found your tutorial very interesting I have never seen a cricket demonstrated I have a Scan N Cut which I dearly love. I love the fact I can do it without having to connect to a computer or I can scan Appliqué Files or download SVG files. But I know it’s not for everyone because it is a little more pricey. Great demo. I’m getting ready to cut out a little vinyl clutch myself.
I got a cricket Explorer three for my birthday March of 2024 this is exactly what I hope to do with it I tried to make things twice before and was dead in the water! I'm going to follow along with you and hopefully have some success
Your camera is good and the focus is great so far... yes the struggle is REAL with using new equipment. Glad I'm not the only one who talks to the equipment. I'll check out this one out.
After 2 virtual sew dates today and sitting in my sewing room all day, I get to grab my hand quilting and watch you! Thanks for sharing your skills and time.
You’re fun to watch. I’m new to Cricut. I just got a Joy for Christmas and I’m wheelchair bound since I’m a little helpless. I used make bags and would to try now. Thanks for this video!
Omg thanks so much Jess, you looked like me a month ago trying to figure out what settings to use to cut vinyl for the Poppie Purse. The possibilities are endless on the Cricut. I also used it to cut sewing templates out of chipboard, worked great! Love love love your new camera💗💗
Jess, Thank u, thank u for doing a video on this. Unfortunately can't watch the video right now but when I heard u say cut vinyl for bag making I thought Bingo! That's what I want! I couldn't decide which one to buy so this will be a great help 🥰😙
I always love your videos but this video made me very glad I have the Silhouette 4! You made good points I can use for my cutting machine BUT Cricut software looks like a nightmare! Thank you for all your videos! You are appreciated!
i have a cameo 3 and am looking to upgrade so i can cut fabric and vinyl..... can't decide if i got with the 4 or go to the dark side and get a cricut??? I watched a video on importing patterns (non-svg) into design space to cut and it looked really easy but I am a Silhouette person so am torn! How does the 4 go with fabric?
I’ve been using my ScanNCut for 7+ years for bag making and quilting. The scan to direct cut sets this apart from the others and much easier to use. I have had both. 😊
I replaced my cricuit for the scan and cut when I learned you can convert the cut files to embroider the appliqué. I love that Jess is diving into appliqué this year. Can’t wait to see what she comes up with!
Terri, What does scan to direct mean. Will sgv files work on a Bernina sewing machine or just brother.? Totally new to this. Interested for Applique and little bit of bag making.
@@viddy8379 it has a scanner as well so I can take a pattern piece or shape for appliqué scan it in and cut. Less steps this way as well. Then just save the file. Canvas workspace is free as well. SVG files are cut files for any machine.
Yes, please shoot some videos on how to use the Cricut to cut embroidery items. I’ve tried a few but I didn’t get the size just right. Thank you for all you do!
I have a Cricut maker. I have all of my patterns on it. After you download them or size them on your own put them on the “Cloud” so they are always there for you.
Hi Jess, not sure if this was already answered or if you have figured this out, but you can choose to do multiples when cutting using the Explore by changing the number next to Project Copies (shown right above your mat image). Been binge watching your tutorials. 🙂
That was entertaining and helpful. I have the maker too and have cut vinyl with no problems. I quilt and have yet to have it cut anything because it's easier to cut in large quantities at once. For the most part, I print stuff for things to overlay and some clothing items.
A very good tutorial, I was making earrings at Christmas using glittery faux suede it was not staying nice. So I will try the pretty side down. Cool info on the mirroring too. I want to make hand sanitizer key chains. I’m a quilter to I like your sewing machine application
I use my Maker to cut the rectangles for the snack bags. Simple cuts, but I can’t cut straight so I am grateful you put the dimensions in the tutorials. I have cut vinyl on the Maker for the snack bags but maybe I use thinner than you are showing.
Thank you so much! This was very helpful. I've been looking at the machines and debating the usefulness for both bag making and for dressmaking fabric. Seeing you go through the process has given me the confidence to go for it. I would like to see how you apply the appliqués you make to bags as well as any other trials you put your machine through.
Great video! I have a Maker (original one) and use for both crafting and sewing projects. I cut vinyl for t-shirts, mugs, signs, and anything else I can put vinyl on. I have recently started using it to cut materials for making bags and other sewing. The Maker also does a great job of cutting out templates for any pattern I will make several times. It's such a versatile machine; I use it all the time! I do like that more and more patterns are being released in SVG format, yay!
Hi Jess, love your videos, I don’t know how you didn’t open the cricut explore sooner. Bending the mat will make it easier to get the items off the mat and makes the mat last longer
I use my explorer Air 2 for mostly paper crafts and a bit of vinyl (adhesive and htv) but not tried fabrics yet. Mostly because I thought I needed to interface everything with the Air 2. But faux leather is basically stabilized already so think this video pushed me to try it soon. Thank you.
@@Divergent_stitches agreed on placing the material right side down and mirrored if the backing is too fuzzy. If I can place it right side up at least I know the cut will be good - anything not cut well will be backing.
I haven’t tried it yet, but I have seen some videos where they put the fabric right side up on transfer tape first, then stick the transfer tape side to the mat so it doesn’t leave a residue and you still get to cut with right side up.
Hi, if you want to stick your vinyl cutout onto a project you could add some double sided adhesive or double sided fusible interfacing before cutting the vinyl?
This is super helpful. I have a Cricut maker that I rarely use but I bought it to cut svg files for patterns. I will just have to play with it some more.
So glad you did this! I have a maker and use it mostly for kids t shirts but I have cut fabric for face masks and other home decor projects. Just getting into bag making so I'll have to note these settings.

This was a great video. I thought I'd chip in my take o. Your new camera and lense. It's great! Love yhe wide view. I noticed when you hold the vinyl up vlose it took about 2-3 seconds to focus. And by then, you were ready to pull away, and in my head I'm like, wait, hold up. Lemme see it again! 😆 I know white can be just as tricky as black to see details as small as a razor line cut. Would this work on the Maker as well? Would love to see the emboirdery cutting thing your mentioned. I have a maker I'm just learning to do. Just watched your wallet tutorial and all your material is sooooooo cute and everything you make turns out really nice. Hope with a knife blade that it will cut real suede. Jess, the reason the Cricut pulls the mat all the way in is because it's measuring the mat size and making sure it's aligned properly. There are 12"x24" mats for larger projects. Also, if you want to print two copies on similar material, copy and paste the design next to each other in Design Space, then cut out each type of material and secure them to the mat side-by-side. Hope this helps!
Your new camera is great! I just bought the Explore Air 2 and can’t wait to play with it more. I did notice though, on mine for some reason, does not feed the mat all the way through before it cuts and I thought it should. Might have to reach out to cricut support.
Super helpful! I use my Original Maker to cut out stuff. I’ve had luck with the Non Adhesive Vinyl setting. It does 2 passes and it’s worked so far. Can’t wAit to see what you make with these!
I got myself a silhouette in December😁 in hopes of cutting designs out of the pattern piece instead of sewing them on top.. I didn't try yet. Lol but thats what I wanted it for.
If you don’t mind, could you share your settings for cutting the chopping mats? I’ve tried about 5 times so far and I’m still trying to finesse the perfect settings.
Thank you sooo much for this tutorial. I was not sure if I wanted to purchase the circuit or the cameo 4. But it looks like this is pretty easy to use so I might buy it. By the way I love the vinyl with all the print, could you tell me where you bought it? It is so cute.
Love your videos!!!! I know nothing about these cutting machines. But I want to, your video was so helpful!!! Is it true you have to pay a monthly fee to use them? Thank you. ❤
Thank you for this video Jess! I would like to use this for cutting out strap connectors in vinyl or leather for purses. Would this machine be better than the smaller machine?
Love the video! I bought the original maker in the Black Friday sales a d love it! So far only done the htv and normal transfer vinyl but been wanting to use it for bag making for a while so definitely been encouraged to experiment now! I've just gotten the NCW svg files so hoping to have a go at that as well as the pouch you did a while ago with the heart cut out and the animal crossing fabric - can't remember the name off the top of my head!!!!!
Look for the Cricut - embroidery video but couldn't find any. Maybe it isn't made yet so wanted to leave a comment to let you know that I'm definitely interested in that 😊
Thank you for this informative video. I can't rely on my memory so I save a piece of whatever I cut on my machine and write done the requirements used to cut that fabric. So when I go back to that fabric I know the adjustments needed on my machine to cut it. I hope this is helpful.

Your new camera is great! I just bought the Explore Air 2 and can’t wait to play with it more. I did notice though, on mine for some reason, does not feed the mat all the way through before it cuts and I thought it should. Might have to reach out to cricut support.
That's a feature on the newer machines. My explore air 2 doesn't feed it all the way through when loading.
Yes like the new camera
Super helpful! I use my Original Maker to cut out stuff. I’ve had luck with the Non Adhesive Vinyl setting. It does 2 passes and it’s worked so far. Can’t wAit to see what you make with these!
Can you recommend types of thread you use in bag making maybe even the brands thanks!
Yay I be been wanting to try this but afraid to!
I got myself a silhouette in December😁 in hopes of cutting designs out of the pattern piece instead of sewing them on top.. I didn't try yet. Lol but thats what I wanted it for.
I’ve been cutting vinyl for bags with the rotary on my Cricut Maker since I got it in Nov. 😬
If you want, you can create your own setting and name it whatever you want. I created a setting that cuts the plastic chopping mats for templates.
If you don’t mind, could you share your settings for cutting the chopping mats? I’ve tried about 5 times so far and I’m still trying to finesse the perfect settings.
Love to see my tutorial on appliqué and embroidery and what you do with it ❤️
thank you for your video can you make one on how to apply or sew it as an appliqué
SOOOOO happy you did this!! Been asking ALL these questions....
Hey Jess, Im cleaning my office and listening to you.
try the leather option that works well
This is great - my Cricut should be arriving in the next day or two…. Bought so I can enhance my bag making as well as label everything in my house 😊😊
Hello Jessie I Also have a circuit maker . Your camera is great
I love this. I have been sitting on the fence deciding what to buy.
Thank you sooo much for this tutorial. I was not sure if I wanted to purchase the circuit or the cameo 4. But it looks like this is pretty easy to use so I might buy it.
By the way I love the vinyl with all the print, could you tell me where you bought it? It is so cute.
The new camera looks great!!!
Love your videos!!!! I know nothing about these cutting machines. But I want to, your video was so helpful!!! Is it true you have to pay a monthly fee to use them? Thank you. ❤
Camera looks great! ♥️
Thanks! I think I want one of those machines….I want to learn more! Great video!
Yes, Im interested in using my cutter for machine embroidery shapes.
Should you not do mirror image when you put the right side on the mat?
Love it ! Thanks for al the tips. Are you going to have the sewing machine file available ( svg ) ? 🙂
That’s a great idea!
