OLD LEATHER SMITH here. I always like 2 learn something new, thank you. Suggestions, add a few drops of liquid dish soap 2 your water, it breaks the tension of the water and the leather absorbs it faster and more completely.
Use a Blush Brush in stead of the wool dauber you will find it does a better job and you will only do it once. I want 2 learn more so I subscribed. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾️🙃

I don’t know if this will help anyone, but when I stain edges on leather, I use a q-tip and roll it along the edge to minimise spill over. Amazing video!!

I bought my Cricut Maker YEARS ago and was quickly overwhelmed so it sat gathering dust until I discovered a couple of RUclips channels that made it look not only fun but EASY! My “go to” being YOUR channel. I made my VERY FIRST PROJECT LAST WEEK! And thanks to your easy tutorials, I was able to pull it off without a hitch on my very first try! I am so thankful I stumbled across your channel because this was a very special project I needed to do in a short period of time as the intended recipient was someone I had never met (but will now be a forever part of my family) and was only in town for one week and I was nervous I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. It turned out BEAUTIFULLY and she LOVED IT! Now I’m off to find some leather and try this new adventure! As a leather worker, I always thought there must be a way to use the Cricut Maker to tool leather. Thank you sooo much for all your time in discovering the way!! This has created endless possibilities for me in my leather shop!!
you could also go along the back of the leather and scrape some of the thickness off to make your patches more pliable.

Breaking traditional programming rules for exceptional results
I have to say this is the best tutorial I have ever seen and listened to. It is clear and easy to understand as well as covering all the important information. Thank you.
I have been doing this with my Scan N Cut for about 3 years now. I use the emboss feature. I draw up many of my own designs in Ai and bring them up in Canvas Workspace and transfer to my SNC. I wet the leather as well. I use double sticky sided Cat Scratch tape. I have used it on belts, bag patch logos, dog collars, key chains , ornaments and several other leather craft items. I use about 2-3 oz veg tan leather. Do a test to make sure it clears your machine machine head. You will need to set the scanner level to 2. Hard pressure and slow speed on settings.
I also do half cutting on the same leather using the same technique-water and tape. Light pressure settings, slow cutting and I interchange the fine vinyl auto blade (sky blue cap cutter)into the standard (black cap cutter) for a much cleaner cut. Once complete I roll the leather back and forth with my hands to open wide my cuts then take a stain pen and run over the cuts which soak it up to a deep rich color then go stain the whole item with normal staining styles.
Or you can just stain the piece at one time for a more specific subdued look.
You can also draw or emboss your complete pattern for hand cutting too.

As a leatherworker, I love that the cicut can open leatherworking to others in other flexible ways, however, I def feel it would be much easier to just manually tool it.

Excellent tutorial! From leather crafting perspective you have many options to attach the patch, glue, make the border a bit larger and use rivets to attach to the hat or you can sew onto the hat after punching stitch holes. Love seeing people find applications of untraditional methods in getting similar results. ❤
I have had a bag of leather scraps in my cupboard for over 40 years from when I used to sell leather bookmarks at Tasmania’s famous Salamanca Market. Always thought I would go back to it but now with my cricut maker 3 (which I love) I will be unearthing my stash and getting back into leather crafting thanks to your well produced and easily followed instructions. Hearing you say “pin layer” reminded me fondly of why people in the southern US states say “ink pin” when they are referring to a “pen”, meaning the writing instrument. I once asked a colleague, who had asked me for an “ink pin”, why she specified it that way, and she responded, “well, as opposed to a safety pin, of course!”, like I was the dullest knife in the drawer. 😊. I guess I could also make small holes so a rivet could be used to anchor piece down to your make. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
The Engraving tool acts like a Swivel Knife and gives you your cut. The Foil Tool acts like the Beveler and gives you your depth. (You explained it well. I'm just adding this for people who might want to know the terms) I want a Cricut now...

Unless you teach for a living you are a natural teacher & have a real gift for it! My crafting gene is wide awake and eager to get to it. (I’m betting my husband probably won’t be terribly happy about that, lol, but…meh. I’ve been looking for something a bit different from what I’ve been doing the few weeks I’ve been a cricut owner (early Christmas gift 😉).

Two things to try: 1) wet your leather with water mixed with approximately 10% alcohol ( rubbing of course) and put in the refrigerator if hot outside, wrapped in plastic bag to maintain and preserve the moisture. Let the leather air dry for a while before tooling, does not have to be natural color or completely dry.
When tooling on a work bench the bevels are cut very shallow before setting the figure tools to leather and it sounds as though you may be able to accomplish this with a lite setting on your blade and then running the burnishing tool. I don't know cricket so just idea from an old leather worker . I love what you did!

I have always wanted to know how to do this. I have been crafting for years and knew there had to be a way to use the cricut with leather but I was too scared to explore it on my own. Your video confirmed for me that it is possible and gave me the knowledge I needed to be able to do it. Thank you very much.
I know I say this every time you come out with some new technique , but you are a true genius. I am amazed by your creativity and your willingness to try and try and try again to make these things work. You must have so many scrap pieces of stuff from all of the “test runs”. THANK YOU!!! I have been asking on Facebook forums for 2 days how to use the deep-cut blade and NO ONE could tell me. They all just said, "it works in the Maker". But didn't explain that you don't look for a setting, you just ignore it when it says "knife blade".
Please do not misunderstand. You can not ignore it when it says "Knife Blade," only when it says "Fine Point Blade," and you should only do this when you have tested, or when someone you trust has recommended, a particular setting for a particular material.

Ok this was just what I needed. Now to figure how to make the pattern for our valet tray and adding some Aggie Tooling for our Scholarship raffle during football watching parties. We have the pattern made, but not to transfer to Cricut. I have a maker, but have not used it. I’m so used to my OG cricket. LOL. Thank you for your wonderful instruction. It was very well done and so easy to follow.
:-) so many comment... but also as a leather worker, I use a large sharpie to dye my edges and Tokonole to smooth those edges to a nice smooth finish. While I'm not a patch guy, I like the idea of tooling floral designs. I need to try this to save time. thanks.

Leather antiquing gel by Fiebings might be a great option for some leather staining. I do some saddle repairs and leather restoration. Its a great option.

Just started with my Cricut Maker (and really anything Cricut-related) in Sept 2021. Leather is a huge part of my life and I have an appreciation for real leather, not faux or flimsy leather. So, I searched and searched for ways to make really cool things with real leather using my Cricut Maker, and more importantly tooling and engraving-type of projects. This is by far the best video I just happened upon! I’ve made a few projects so far and am sooooo I love and they are extremely popular.
i have a gerber edge and a vinyl cutter... i never thought i would be interessted in this hobby plotter... but the leather features really got me thinking a bout getting one for small projects

What I mean by that is watching Cricut videos but never quite satisfied with the information presented or lack thereof. I have been watching leather maker videos for years and always wondered if tooling could be done more efficiently with a Cricut. HOLY MOLY. This is the BEST Cricut discovery ever! I recently bought a Maker 3 because I have been making leather bracelets by hand for years now and wanted something to maybe allow me to just layout designs onto the leather and then cut the bracelets for me to speed up production, but I was a bit underwhelmed with the limited options and tutorials that were out there when it came to the etching tool on veg-tan leather…until now! Just tried out your process and I can 100% say it worked for me and also looks just like my hand-tooled designs, and in a fraction of the time it takes to tool them! THANK YOU! This process is a game-changer!

Hi Kay, I just watched your video. I have an explore so I paid close attention on the process. Once I watched it, I read through the comments and a third party tool was brought up. I didn't realize it, but I have this tool and learned how to use it for engraving on acrylic. Your tutorials are well made and from your acrylic tutorial I made some amazing night lights for a couple of grandkids! Thanks again, look forward to trying leather tooling sometime in the future, now that I know I can accomplish it with my explore :)
