    2011 for me was the most exciting year in Hip Hop from my generation. It had a nice blend of Mainstream and underground Hip Hop that I play till this day. Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Childish Gambino all dropped their debut albums that year...Watch the Throne was the most hyped album that year including Drake’s Take Care album
    Danny Brown’s “XXX” and Shabazz Palaces “Black Up”, Kid Cudi’s best album MOTM2 are amongst my favorite experimental Hip Hop albums of all time also came out in 2011. The true emergence of Odd Future and Tyler The Creator with Goblin and A$AP Rocky with LiveLoveASAP. 2011 was an exciting year and true shift in Modern Hip Hop.

  • @motorboy1
    @motorboy1 4 года назад +15

    I’ll give a recent year some credit because I experienced it in real time and it ushered in a new era: 2011
    TDE (Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock), Tyler the Creator (who introduced us to the rest of Odd Future), A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown, Action Bronson, Mac Miller, Childish Gambino, Lil B, SpaceGhostPurrp, Big K.R.I.T., Drake, Watch the Throne, Shabazz Palaces, Death Grips and Tech N9ne.
    Take Care I still feel is Drake’s career-defining album, All 6s & 7s was Tech N9ne’s mainstream breakthrough, and Watch the Throne was simply a big deal. Otherwise, a lot of those artists started to blow up in 2011.

    • @WediFlo
      @WediFlo 3 года назад +1

      That's interesting, because James actually mentions TPAB in his book (where he argues how 2016 is the best year in music history) at the very start, saying that many albums were rumored to be deleayed, because they didn't want to be overshadowed by it - in turn giving the artists more time to refine their albums they've released in 2016.

    I started collecting Hip Hop in 1988 when I bought Tougher Than Leather before even owning a record player.
    I stopped collecting around 2010, mostly because several of my favorite artists stopped sending out vinyl. I've only bought Run The Jewels 1, 2, and 3 since then.

    You had the debuts of Tupac,Del the Funkee Homosapien,KMD(with MF Doom),LONS,Main Source,Nas(on the Main Source album),Pete Rock and CL Smooth,Showbiz and AG,Freestyle Fellowship,Organized Konfusion,Black Sheep,UMCs,WC and the Maad Circle,Ed OG and the Bulldogs,The Fu Schnickens,DJ Quick,Downtown Science,the Gza etc.

    It's not just about albums, but also about what tracks were released or on the radio, so 1998 was amazing to me for underground 12"s/radio/mixtapes, plus all the street stuff at the same time

    Hard to say. But I’m gonna say 1989 and 1994. My fondest memories are from both of those years. 89 was my introduction to hip hop after hearing Big Daddy Kane and EPMD, and then I was hooked and just kept digging. 94 because it was a new era that just exploded with a new wave of artists and classic albums that came out.

    My respect for Acaster went up 1000%... already thought he's a funny dude, but didn't know he's into music this much, but most importantly has a special spot for hip-hop... so special these guys found that it was worth it including him in this. Also respect these guys how they're discussing this... I get all their perspectives and respect them. Because just like that tiresome "GOAT" discussion, there is no definitive... it's all about perspective, personal taste... what or who resonates with you the most... and they kept it 100%.

    2016 was an incredible year, EVERYBODY put out heat from the mainstream to the underground. Artists like Young Thug, Lil Uzi, and Danny Brown transformed the sound of the genre. Whether you wanted trap music, hear bars, or delve into experimental side, you had a wide selection from all of them. It wasn’t just a few great albums/mixtapes either, we were getting multiple in a single month. Don’t even get me started on the summertime parties either.....if you know you know. Despite the fun, artists still took the time to be political and speak on issues like police brutality, being black in America, and that crazy election. Everybody says 2016 was the greatest year ever, and the music we had gave it that legendary stamp.
