  • Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, and Lyle Waggoner. Early Funt & Mundane sketch. Another stage play sabotage. It's a wonder these two had a stage career at all. 🤣🎭
    The opening & closing of the video is just random scenes that I thought to open & close the video; definitely not part of this episode. 😉

    As insufferable Funt and Mundane may be, I'll still appreciate 1) Their love for each other and 2) Their determination to keep the show on no matter whatever happens.

      1) That's by no means a fixed thing; he's had more than a few affairs, most notably with an actress played by Maggie Smith.
      2) "The show must go on" is an edict which they exemplify until it just gets too much, and then it's "Curtain, you fools!"

    • @MaskedMan66
      @MaskedMan66 4 года назад +1

      They went through a number of names before they settled on Funt and Mundane (which was of course a spoof on the names of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne). I personally hated the Eunice skits, but I love "As the Stomach Turns."

    • @wmbrown6
      @wmbrown6 8 месяцев назад

      @@MaskedMan66 - I can see why the "Family" sketches caught on, though (ultimately leading to the "Mama's Family" series) - a good number of those who watched the show had their own tales of family dysfunction that both Carol and Vicki were all too painfully aware of in their own family dynamics growing up, and thus could relate strongly. Still, I don't care much for those either, though one cannot fault how much Ms. Lawrence nailed her performance of Mama. On this, at least Funt shared Lunt's first name; however, what would have been Miss Mundane's?

    • @MaskedMan66
      @MaskedMan66 8 месяцев назад

      @@wmbrown6 "Mama's Family" is a lot more palatable because Thelma was toned down to where she doesn't scream over the least little thing and was much more three-dimensional.
      I guess I just had an ideal family, because when someone in the audience would say during Carol's question time, "I love those skits! Those people are just like my own family," my instant thought was, "You poor soul!" Borderline psychopaths with ego problems screaming at each other every few minutes just doesn't tickle my humerus.

    • @wmbrown6
      @wmbrown6 8 месяцев назад

      @@MaskedMan66 - I seem to remember, from the earliest (not counting a sketch taped in England and aired on CBS in November 1970), Harvey's character alone was known as:
      - Robert Preston Foster
      - Clive Kensington
      - Lester Standish
      - Leslie Amherst (with Carol as his drunk-as-a-skunk wife and co-star Linda)
      The earliest known "Ham Actors" sketch with them as "Funt and Mundane" is believed to be Nov. 23, 1970. Would this be it?

    For those not familiar with theater history, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne were once the most famous and celebrated couple in American theater. Supposedly, their backstage feuds and fights were the inspiration for Cole Porter’s “Kiss Me, Kate.” They were awarded Tonys for lifetime achievement in 1970. Unfortunately, because all of their work was on stage there is no historical film of their performances. I believe they may have performed once for television but the show wasn’t saved for posterity. I did find this brief clip of them, though, which also includes Helen Hayes and Katherine Hepburn:

      The full name of Harvey Korman's character in these sketches was established as Alfred Funt; there's been no evidence with Ms. Burnett's (only a "Miss Mundane" to her from characters like the stage directors, either Lyle Waggoner or who played the role after Mr. Waggoner left), so I wonder - was her character's full name Lynn (or Lynne) Mundane?

    I have worked with so many people who were stupid enough to be rude to secretaries, receptionists, handymen/cleaners/janitors and wait staff. Those "nobodies" have so much power. If you can't treat them with simple human dignity and respect for their work, at least have the intelligence to treat them with fear of how they can make your life hell if you cross them.

      Given that there were three "road shows" Carol did over the show's 11-year run (in London in 1970; New York City in 1971; and Sydney, Australia in 1973), one wonders what a Funt and Mundane sketch would have looked like if the show entered into an agreement to do one edition at the Miami Beach Auditorium where Jackie Gleason produced his variety show from 1964 until its 1970 cancellation.
