Throughout the whole series, I couldn't understand why all these bad things kept happening to her. It wasn't until later on that I realized he was the cause of it all. I couldn't believe how cruel he was to that young man, all because he thought Ruyi and that guy were having an affair. I think deep down he knew Ruyi wouldn't do that to him but he still had him killed just to flaunt his powers.
When Ruyi finally cut a piece of her hair to end their union, that scene was so powerful, I felt it.
Nope, I think that was the greatest moment of clarity for Ruyi in the entire story. He is the mad one. He went
too far too many times. He can't even sell his line of BS to his mother. Everything she said to him was the truth but here is the thing. You can't fix stupid and you can't save a fool from himself.
I have to admire the actor portraying the Emperor. He was true to the character yet I don't believe even he liked him. He did not give Hongli any room to gain sympathy from the audience. I read somewhere that inhabiting this character was hard on the actor emotionally because he was so cruel and self absorbed. I admire his dedication and skill. I would love to know how he could get that cold, reptilian look in his eyes when he was at his angry, mean worst. I am in awe. Then he immediately registers shock when Ruyi basically tells him to fuck off and how easily he lies when the other two bitches walk in. Yul Brenner was always the ultimate Alpha Male as the King of Siam but this guy could give him a run for his money and he don't sing.

It breaks my heart knowing how many of these women desperately tried to win the emperor’s affection only to be scorned and ignored the moment he suspected they were “scheming against him”. I suspect Hailan was quick to figure this out, after basically being abandoned by him and saved by Ruyi, after Consort Gao claimed Hailan was the reason for her miscarriage and nearly having her punished. I get Hongli had a duty to his empire and threats were around every corner, aiming to take him from the seat of emperor, but the way he treated those who only aimed to garner his respect and love was awful. He didn’t realize what good he had around him until the end.

This was one of the saddest dramas I had ever watched 😢 Ruyi and the Prince, now the Emperor were so in love in their youths. They wanted to marry and love each other forever. They did marry, they did love, but for him, the sexual greed and eventually, sexual perversion, destroyed their love and his harem. It pitted woman against woman and child against child. His concubines killed each other, each other’s children, caused some to be given abortion drugs unknowingly. Even Empress Ruyi had her prince killed and was given anti-fertility drugs until she became sterile. She asked not to be Empress any more and when she finally died, he had ALL records of her existence erased from history. Although I watched this years ago, it hurt my heart so much, I can NEVER watch it again. 😔
Emperor Hongli was such trash. Ruyi definitely deserved better
