My name is James and I was so caught off guard by the beginning. Work really has me beaten down rn and I have lots of things failing in my life, so thank you for the kind words of encouragement
We’re getting even closer the release of flyout and im getting pretty excited!
Flying boats are still being used and produced, however they are mostly built in small numbers for military applications or firefighting like the Russian Beriev Be-200 or Japanese Shinmaywa US-2, there are plans to reproduce PBY Catalinas using modern avionics and turboprop engines
I await PatchBits going public. I want my 5% share.
I suspect this flying boat is used as described early in the video and in comments: Passenger travel between major cities that feature bodies of water and firefighting against forest fires. My additional takes are that it could be used in novelty tours around a city's airspace and coastline, and Coast Guard duties mostly for search and rescue in times of peace. For wartime usage, it can be utilized for scouting, S&R, liaison, light resupply for allied submarines, anti-submarine and anti-shipping duties, with the additional bonus of being stationed at island bases too small to support a proper full airfield due to it being essentially a boat when parked.
Call it the Beluga since Patch said it takes off like a whale
If you do revisit this plane in a future video, might I suggest articulated floats, that would fold inwards toward the main hull, and a series of defensive turrets (Chin, Waist and Dorsal).
On the other hand, I know you are inundated with build requests in every video, but if a may make a suggestion of my own:
In 2018(ish) Lockheed proposed an aircraft to the Japan Air Self-Defense Forces for a Fifth-Gen Multi-role Air superiority fighter. The proposal was, in effect, an updated F22 with features and technology from F35 integrated.
My 'challenge' to you is this... build the bastard love-child of 'Raptor' and 'Lightning II', I believe it would be a fun video, as it would be, by far, the most modern aircraft you have built (in a video atleast), and the very nature of being stealth affects the shaping of the aircraft, requiring a substantially different design language than any aircraft you have built before (again, as far as videos are concerned).
Everybody wish james luck
Who’s James
@@darkofthearmy idk
@@darkofthearmy the guy who got a shout-out in the reletive begining of the vid
Good luck James!
@@puhamaci2009 thx
I find it hilarious that one person can embody mass confusion all by himself. I love it, and the squirrel moments are amazing as well. Subbed for the chuckles. :)
And on the lore for this baby, here's my take:
The PBY-9, a seaplane that initially saw production in mid to late 1938, saw relatively little success in the civilian field. However, once the war rolled around, the company that produced the PBY-9 pitched the idea that it could be part of Lend-lease, Being sent mainly to the British and Australians.
There, the PBY-9 earned a new name, the Narwhal. The British used it, alongside PBY-3 Catalinas, to great effect during submarine hunting, as well with selective use by the SBS, though they found very limited use out of the heavy and bulky Narwhal.
It was the Australians however, that got the most use out of the plane. Mounting a pair of Bofurs forty millimeter naval triple A in the nose, along with racks to carry depth charges, fuel, and assorted ordinance under the wings. The Australians were also the ones to first give it the Nickname of the Narwhal. And while she couldn't dog fight against the Japanese carrier based fighters, the Narwhal more than made up for it with its ground attack capabilities and long range, able to harass Japanese forces far from Australian waters.
The Narwhal started to see more and more use throughout Europe once the USA entered the war. As with the British, the US primarily used the quad-engine airframe for Submarine Hunting.
More variants began to spring up as the war progressed. Dedicated bombers and ground attackers, alongside its original transport variant all started to see use throughout Europe, until around January of 1945.
In the pacific theater however, big changes were being made. The Americans, inspired by the Australians putting triple A guns in the nose of the PBY-9, mounted the 75mm from a Sherman in the nose, and filled the plane with fifty cals much like their bombers. This other variant found its niche, lobbing high explosive shells at large targets, including ships and boats of the IJN.
The PBY-9 even saw use after the Second World War, appearing for a brief stint in the Korean War, reprising its older role as a Ground pounder. After the 1950s, the PBY-9 faded away into museums and the history books, to be marveled at by kids for generations to come. Some would keep flying as part of those museums, though many simply rested in the museum halls.
I absolutely live for Patch's tangents
keep doing what you're doing Patch, your videos are amazing :D
Hey I just wanted to say your videos are amazing and they really brighten my day. Keep up the good work.
Love the video! One silly design thing though- those engines look like they'd be awfully close to the water, especially cutting through the surf on takeoff! If you were to revisit it, I might consider making the fuselage deeper (like the Short Sunderland or Boeing 314) or raising the engines (mounted above the wing/upwards pointing like the Be-12 or on a raised wing like the Catalina). Love your videos!
You will build that plane irl when you hit 100k.
You cannot convince us otherwise
Love the flyout videos! As a suggestion I was thinking of something silly like a Vought V-173, F-82, or Blohm and Voss 141
I really enjoy listening to you ramble in the background so I wouldn't worry too much about the tangents, makes it all the more entertaining. :)
If you ever revisit the flying boat concept, don't forget to look into some of the seaplanes Grumman developed and manufactured (i.e. G-21 Goose, G-73 Mallard, and HU-16 Albatross) for some added inspiration. With a number of examples still in private and commercial use to this day, they're all pretty neat aircraft that are definitely deserving of some recognition and appreciation.
Hello Patch, I know I'm a bit late in terms of putting out a comment on this video, however; I do like your content, and look forward to the next few videos on Flyout. I intend to make some videos regarding it as well, but I'd love to see you model struts, interior, piping, gear bays (+ Bay doors), Bombay(s) (if any), and engine extras such as Turbos/Super-Chargers (if any), Float Carb (if any); and ammo feeding mechanisms on a WWI-WWII era Propeller aircraft someday. I know this is a weird sort of thing, but I feel like you'd be able to make a very nice realistic aircraft, and after typing this I have more questions for the devs of Flyout other than the Fluid-dynamic/Thermodynamic calculations scale, I'm going to go watch the newest video now, have a good one.
For your intrest, Flyout is developed by only one guy:)
"Sea planes don't really get done any more"
Well... that is changing. Earlier this year Catalina announced they were relaunching the PBY......
Never mind, you mentioned it later. Disregard.
Good lord, RUclips's recommendation algorythm really came in clutch here! You have a lovely voice and I love your character and tangents, and as a looooong time SimplePlanes addict, this game made my jaw flop open. THAT CROSS SECTION EDITOR IS CRACK COCAINE!
Dropping a sub, hope to see more of this!!!
he says with the chapters people can skip the building section if they want to. to be honest i only rly watch the building section. good job, this is a rly cool plane. keep building Patch
18:00 This plane should be called the "Dolphin". It´s a whale, and the colour reminds me of one.
Hey patchbits, a flyout idea you might want to try is to make an airliner that has modern tech, but has something that we don’t really do anymore like it’s supersonic or it’s a seaplane like this one or something else you want to try
Ebic!!!
I just realised you are basically the Matt Lowne of Sprocket and Flyout, but without the news videos, and I am all for it!
6:24 There's actually a jet seaplane, called the BE-200
That looks BEAUTIFUL bro, imma purchase it for my birthday
I like watching you build so I can improve my building skills
That looks pretty cool! Speaking of sea planes, can you build a BV238 flying boat?
Well, seaplanes/floatplanes are kinda cool, and they're basically the starting point of carrier-borne aviation.
this feels like one of those tragic designs that were one of the best of their class, but were too little, too late; the same timing that allowed it to use techniques and technology that werent available to earlier designs also meant that by the time it was released, the broader concept was outdated
that being said, it looks amazing!
A sleek beast. Probably a patrol bomber. It looks to me like, maybe, a fictional successor to the Consolidated Coronado. (On that basis, I'd maybe call it the Kauai, or Chesapeake.) Also less well known boats from the mid/late '40s, like the Martin Mars and Short Seaford/Solent.
I'd say the tangents make your videos more lively and engaging. Just my thoughts.
Lovely plane!
Sea planes just so majestic
thanks james
You should be a secondary narrator in the stanley parable ultra deluxe +
That's an interesting comment I must admit
I’m new to this channel and I’m quite fond of your videos. Keep it up!
I would love to see you make a self starting glider. 🐥
you're my fav flyout yt 🥰
With the insane amounts of forest fires around the Mediterranean sea, US west coast, and Australia, introducing a modern version of Catalina as a flying firetruck could certainly find some use, especially since many of the original surviving planes are performing this duty to this day.
Well good news for this idea as some company that I can’t quite recall the name of has plans for reproducing Catalinas with modern turboprop engines and avionics
@@thepenman4865 Yea Patches said it himself. It is the same Consolidated that made them during WW2.
Edit: Well nevermind, apparently it's from a company literally called "Catalina Aircraft", who supposedly holds the rights for the plane.
@@jacplac97 Yeah I noticed that he said it after I commented, I always have a habit of commenting a mere few minutes before the topic that I’m commenting about is discussed in the video, I reckon we should help Patch get enough money so he can get his hands on one of these Catalinas
@@thepenman4865Ah yes, it happens to all of us once in a while, so no worries.
The landing gear in the pontoons is so cursed lol
I would love to see a PBY Catalina in fly out. It's my favorite sea plane. Buy this is also really cool
Patch, imagine if you put a build lore channel in your discord.
seaplanes/floatplanes are great until you need to land far from coast &/or there are some big a** waves.
That's why they dont really are a big thing in modern time, since a regular plane is easier to store/maintain/operate in all weather.
Love your vids❤
Can you PLEASE build a early 50s/ cold war bomber/ heavy fighter?
Awesome video!
Pretend it's the 1950's and it would be converted into a jet flying boat :P
Would be interesting to see.
Maybe a few more modifications, like a slight wing sweep etc.
This is kinda cool because I just made a PBY inspired build in trailmakers.
Im so excited to finally try out flyout in a week or two
James I believe in you!
I like to imagine that a variant of this plane was used in ww2 to transport light vehicles to troops in normandy in extremely limited numbers.
Bro got me into sprocket, i can't wait to get flyout, geez this game is cool
the MB30 was designed as a commercial seaplane by douglas in late 1933, which saw use by multiple commercial airlines primarily across europe with limited applications in asia and north america aswell as famously and most succesfuly in the pacific islands, used as an island hopping service. The aircraft saw limited success despite it's widespread use however, as it was released in a period in which was already seeing the decline of seaplanes and it proved to be more expensive to run than the amount of profit it turned in for the airlines, and was discontinued two years later, in 1935. However, in 1940, the british airforce saw a need for a seaplane bomber to commence bombing operations in coastal regions without airports, particularly around france before its surrender later that year. As the germans were advancing rapidly, british command had no time to design and trial new aircraft, and so existing leftover MB30's from years prior were immediately repurposed into medium bombers whiled a new aircraft, the MB30/B40, which was the pre-existing MB30 design modernised and adapted to serve as a medium bomber, was created and put into production for the british airforce. the MB30/B40 first entered service around late 1940/early 1941, after the collapse of france. The MB30/B40 was a medium frontlinebomber/torpedo bomer/short-range strategic bomber that could hold a variety of payloads, including 25kg, 50kg, 100kg, and 150kg bombs aswell as incendiary bombs and multiple types of torpedoes. It included a set of landing gear aswell as it's seaplane buoyancy parts to make it more versatile, among other small changes and modernisations such as new, more powerful engines, armour in crucial places, defensive turrets, etc. It saw use mainly in bombing missions on german positions in northern occupied france and most famously in the invasion of italy due to both locations being close to large bodies of water and having signifcant coastal defenses and towns which where classified as strategic bombing locations. In the late war period (1944, 1945) it was phased out of use entirely due to its sluggish movement capabilities, slow speed, relatively low max altitude for a bomber, it's outdated 1930 design, and it's large size making it an easy target for superprops and late war jet fighters.
Patchbits you should try making a “realistic” biplane of the sorts, maybe with like wires on the inside, maybe even an early ww1 bomber.
You should make a supersonic jet seaplane
The landing gear blep was honestly pretty great, kinda wished it stayed lmao
I kind of want to get this game, but I also feel like I would do terrible. Very cool plane!
We love you James!
make a civilian airliner!!!
We own a share in your soul
For the time period it was built for plus with the size and the probable range it might have be repurposed for long range scouting for enemy ships (similar to the what happen to the Short S.25 Sandringham (Sunderland)). I would say your patreon are and it wouldn't be a good idea to tell the people you want to buy tickets on your plane as well.
You will build a real sea plane the bigger question is in which scale the 1/72 or 1/48?
I would like to see a submarine hunter plane if that is possable
Looks like a cross between the Hughes H-4 and the Boeing 314.
Sea... deep nutz
The plane looks awesome really good job! Could you make like a paper airplane in fly out I have a feeling it would be super cool to get it to work but anyway good job!
Cool
Remember guys, 100 000 subs and we got a sea plane !
Hello patch
Have you looked into a game called "Dream Car Builder"? I feel like it'd be a decent fit for your channel and I'd like to see what all you could make in it. Despite the name of the game, you can also make planes, helicopters, tanks, etc. Anyway, I'd love to see you try it if you haven't
Build the fastest plane possible, I don't really care about looks just "speed and power!"
Jemry Clark
Whoa caught one early.
The idea would fail because 99.99% of rivers have a current and are very shallow with rocky / dangerous beds, meaning it would be almost impossible to land without basically destroying the lower part... Cities near *lakes* tho
Thanks Mate - doing my best
you should look up the consolidated pby-2. i think its one of (if not THE) largest american patrol bomber. it isnt really well known despite how cool it is.
Yes
Ayyyy it's ya boi james
the tangents are cute ngl
Could you make a plane with forward-swept wings?
Do you read all the comments?? If so you should know you’re amazing and I love your videos ^_^
I do!
You should build a seaplane model when reaching the 100k :P
My boyfriend thinks it’d be really cool if you made a ww2 fighter with a stupid powerful inverted v12
I want to see a jet engine version of this now lol.
I wonder if you can make a YB-49 style flying wing?
You should try making a Mach 4 capable bomber lol
Patch you should build a supersonic nuclear bomber to overkill single ground units 😏😏
Japan as far as I know is the only country that is currently manufacturing and using seaplanes in a military.
My guess is that it’s Mitsubishi that is the maker.
Build the PBJ-1H or a similar vehicle
gotta hit that 100k, then go to DriveTanks in texas
fuck it, Mach 17 SR-71 Blackbird
can you try making a arsenal bird from ace combat?. also keep up the good work mate
Make something like the me323 ;)
the ksp music...
YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you happy i left a like also you might want to check out a game Stormworks
Maybe trimariner would be a good name
PCM-1 Mudskipper
Like a sunderland ? It looks like it should have a rear wheel instead of a front wheel
Let’s comment at mass
