Such an illuminating lecture with many interconnected ideas and broad, abstract topics-and this was only the introduction and overview to the course! Being an avid fan of Jordan for quite some time now (~1st half of 2018 until current time) it is interesting to see how the path he took to evolve himself personality wise and how his meteoric rise to fame and what he advocates makes perfect logical sense based on his academic roots seen here. His various idiosyncratic, mythological, idiomatic expressions such as "save said person/object from the belly of a whale" or "slay the dragon" were familiar and comforting to hear since the underlying concepts from those proverbs are at the core of his message that he still tries to convey even in present times 8+ years from the date of this recorded lecture. And it was also cool to see how animated he was in presenting and articulating the multi-dimensional concepts while inserting little bits of humour and comedic wit along the way; it is rare to see that much enthusiasm towards an academic discipline from a professor nowadays. Looking forward to consuming the information and complex ideas from the following videos contained in this lecture playlist.

Essays are self-contained but use material from the course. Reading materials include original papers and a challenging textbook. Reading requires thoughtful engagement due to complex ideas per paragraph. The knowledge gained from this course can be life-changing. 29:00 🐍 The Significance of Snake Detection Human visual acuity is influenced by the need to detect predatory snakes. The human brain has developed a specialized circuit for snake detection. Detecting snakes in the environment has been a crucial survival advantage. -This innate ability to detect snakes is deeply rooted in our evolutionary history. This survival strategy influenced early human cultures and perceptions of danger. 34:28 🧩 Early Human Knowledge and Mythology Religion and mythology have played a significant role in shaping ideas about human potential. Religious systems often incorporate theories of personality. Stories and narratives are fundamental for conveying ideas about human behavior and potential. The study of mythology can provide insights into deep-seated cultural beliefs. Understanding ancient cultural traditions can help us navigate the complexities of modern life. 37:43 🌌 Exploring Deep Mythological Structures The lecture delves into prehistory and our evolutionary history. Mythological structures have influenced human thinking for tens of thousands of years. These structures help define cultural identities and guide behavior. Cultural traditions serve as orienting frameworks for societies. Understanding deep mythological structures can aid in personal growth and cultural understanding. 41:15 🔄 Death and Rebirth: A Process of Change Initiatory processes involve symbolic deaths and rebirths. Death and rebirth are metaphors for change and personal growth. Ideas, like subpersonalities, can be let go and transformed. Initiations can be voluntary processes of transformation or involuntary crises. Embracing change and personal growth is essential for adaptation in a changing world. 46:03 🧠 The fundamental question of personal identity, Are you the thing that stays the same or the thing that changes? Changing involves pain, resistance to change. Piaget's constructivism: How individuals construct themselves from birth forward. The unfolding of a human being according to Piaget. 49:14 🧠 Introduction to depth psychology and psychoanalysis, Misunderstandings about psychoanalytic theory. The profound nature of Jung's ideas on ethics and morality. 55:41 🧠 Unconscious processes and encoding of information, The concept of unconscious processes in behavior. How unconscious information is encoded physiologically. Cultural encoding through interactions and shaping of behavior. The unconscious as the source of subpersonalities and fantasies. 59:47 🧠 Existentialism and the paradoxical nature of life, Existentialism's perspective on human existence and sickness. The paradoxical problems posed by life: vulnerability, judgment, and insufficiency. The existential dilemma of living with mortality and suffering. The search for solutions to the paradoxical problems of existence. 01:06:09 🧠 Introduction to the Big Five personality traits, Overview of the Big Five traits: extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness. The relationship between personality traits and political predispositions. How temperament influences high-level cognitive functions. The significance of personality traits in predicting life success. 01:08:43 🧠 Factors contributing to a high-quality life, The components of a high-quality life: meaningful work, relationships, and moderation. The importance of not experiencing excessive pain and anxiety. Performance prediction and the traits that lead to life success. The difference between happiness and a fulfilling life.
46:11 -Are you the thing that stays the same? Or are you the thing that changes? And you know, the thing that changes, can live in a lot more places. So that's worth thinking about it. But the cost is, well, when you change you die a little bit. And that's painful. Or maybe you die a lot. And that's really painful. So if you ever wonder why people don't change, that's part of the reason.
Great comment! If you haven’t had the chance, go back to his earlier Harvard lectures. He looks like a person trying to be Jordan Peterson 😂. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was watching a Seinfeld episode and yet he was just as brilliant back then.
Watching this lecture was so refreshing and inspiring. I think I’m now more certain, than I already was, that I want to major in Psychology. Although I won’t be able to be a student of yours - which is one of my biggest wishes - I know that studying Psychology regardless of the place (given that the university is decent) will reflect positively in many different aspects of my life, such as personal life choices, career and ways to affect the world. Thank you for sharing your genius with the rest of us, Mr. Peterson! Warmest regards, E.
I've been studying a bachelor of Psychology for just under three years, and I can say that none of my professors have had the capacity to articulate the concepts relating to personality as well has JBP. Most of my professors hardly know the content themselves, constantly reading their notes and not engaging with students. Oh how I wish I could have studied under Peterson.
Your old life has passed away. But you will begin a new one; and you will be stronger, wiser, and more confident because of it. Man I wish I had a professor like this in uni. I'm watching this because it interests me what he has to say, and I would've liked to read the articles for the course. Actually someone who is able to convey dark motivations from people, like causing destruction just because you want to see the world burn, but he also has a philosophy of life to prevent you from having those darker motivations.
Before I listen to what you have to say about Robert Crumb, I have to mention that I'm pretty sure he's the one who designed the visual for the waking nightmare I had the other night. I was playing Pandora while I slept, and woke up to "Somebody to Love" by Jefferson Airplane. The song was a monster. It turned into a monster to terrify me. I had a full blown panic attack. The monster was part animal and part machine. The reverb on the guitars made it sound like a goose and an elephant. The tempo was the rate at which it was chasing me. But it already had me because it was all my worst fears. It was death and a fate worse than death. It might have been part tank. Maybe part archaic cartoon computer or spaceship or something. It sounded like Vietnam, the horrible historical context in which the song was written. It contained a story involving the song and a short conversation between my father and my twelve year old self during the year before he committed suicide. My sister helped me unpack the song and validated me that, indeed, it is a terrifying song. The sound is violent and the lyrics are entirely about attachment driven by the loss of innocence and the panic that ensues. It is a song of alienation, not love at all. It's about clinging to the next thing you find to avoid the feeling of utter hopelessness that comes with disillusionment, which, in the case of mass psychedelic experimentation, is accompanied by a distinct knowledge that we've all been brainwashed (ironically, the LSD was part of the brainwashing that sort of backfired). The song is about being in the underworld and grasping at something or someone to save you from it. It's about being perpetually full of angst. It's about being Cain. I think it describes a Cluster B culture. Given that it's about the underworld, it's not surprising that their other most famous song is based on Alice in Wonderland. So I can't wait to hear what virtual you are about to say about Robert Crumb, the Man Who Drew My Doom. Maybe the Ice Cream Kid is chasing me. When the truth is found to be lies And all the joy within you dies Don't you want somebody to love, don't you Need somebody to love, wouldn't you Love somebody to love, you better Find somebody to love When the garden flowers baby are dead, yes and Your mind, your mind is so full of red Don't you want somebody to love, don't you Need somebody to love, wouldn't you Love somebody to love, you better Find somebody to love Your eyes, I say your eyes may look like his Yeah, but in your head, baby, I'm afraid you don't know where it is Don't you want somebody to love, don't you Need somebody to love, wouldn't you Love somebody to love, you better Find somebody to love Tears are running down and down and down your breast And your friends, baby they treat you like a guest Don't you want somebody to love, don't you Need somebody to love, wouldn't you Love somebody to love, you better Find somebody to love

The funniest thing to me about watching this today is the segment where he talks about “What we should do” as I am in phase transition right now lol I moved to Guatemala after I completed my degree program in Regenerative Organic Agriculture & briefly did some volunteer work in one region, but the guy was a drunk & kept trying to get more money from me as I’m a disabled vet on a decent pension. So now I moved to another city, I’m working on my Spanish 3 days a week with a tutor, got a gym membership & gradually meeting people...but what should I do? I think the priority should be the language development so I can communicate with new people down here, then I can look at communicating ideas for business or volunteer ventures. I’ve decided that loose plans are good as I’ve found truth over the course of my life in the saying that “the best laid plans go to waste”

There is not a voice we need more right now then this man's. Let's try and approach today's turmoils with the elegangance and steadiness Jordan would have.

Dr. Peterson has done so much for free speech and freedom, not to mention helping so many people with their mental health, but his earlier intellectual work is excellent too.

First time I've seen a class actually applaud a lecturer, bruh this shit is gooooood
It’s wild to see how your mannerisms have changed from 2014, to 2017 when you realized the impact you were having on an online audience!
Great comment! If you haven’t had the chance, go back to his earlier Harvard lectures. He looks like a person trying to be Jordan Peterson 😂. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was watching a Seinfeld episode and yet he was just as brilliant back then.
Thank you so much for sharing all these lectures/reading lists etc. Its such a gift !!
Thanks for uploading these. Going back one by one

Peterson!
Warmest regards,
E.
Plus you’ll be able to ask people important questions, such as whether they want fries with that.

Thanks for sharing, enjoy every second of it
I've been studying a bachelor of Psychology for just under three years, and I can say that none of my professors have had the capacity to articulate the concepts relating to personality as well has JBP. Most of my professors hardly know the content themselves, constantly reading their notes and not engaging with students. Oh how I wish I could have studied under Peterson.
Now you can

Your old life has passed away. But you will begin a new one; and you will be stronger, wiser, and more confident because of it. I have no idea what you’re going through, but you will get through it; so long as you go straight through the middle. God bless you man, my DMs are open if you need someone to talk to. 🙏🏻

Anyone who’s been to uni coming back to these lectures to actually get the real education they missed out on?
Nah. I'm here to top up on my already existing education
@@victorhugomuzi Awk nice man do you know if the personalities lectures from 2014-16 are all the same or different in each year?
@@15queenslanddrive nah. I listened to 2016 and 2017 tho and they're the same content but 2017 has more unnecessarily extra opinions from JP although more descriptive
Oh I see thank you for that so I don’t have to repeat any lectures:)

Haha yeah. Probably best to pick the 2017 personality lecture series IF

Some people use the word "personality" to justify and defend abusive behaviors such as screaming, chasing, yelling, and constant hyper criticism.
July 19th 2019, here we go. A better tomorrow.
When the truth is found to be lies
And all the joy within you dies
Don't you want somebody to love, don't you
Need somebody to love, wouldn't you
Love somebody to love, you better
Find somebody to love
When the garden flowers baby are dead, yes and
Your mind, your mind is so full of red
Don't you want somebody to love, don't you
Need somebody to love, wouldn't you
Love somebody to love, you better
Find somebody to love
Your eyes, I say your eyes may look like his
Yeah, but in your head, baby, I'm afraid you don't know where it is
Don't you want somebody to love, don't you
Need somebody to love, wouldn't you
Love somebody to love, you better
Find somebody to love
Tears are running down and down and down your breast
And your friends, baby they treat you like a guest
Don't you want somebody to love, don't you
Need somebody to love, wouldn't you
Love somebody to love, you better
Find somebody to love
Reading this analysis gave me chills. The way you write gives me thought that we'd be good friends.

“Throwing sticks at snakes for 60 million years”
The funniest thing to me about watching this today is the segment where he talks about “What we should do” as I am in phase transition right now lol I moved to Guatemala after I completed my degree program in Regenerative Organic Agriculture & briefly did some volunteer work in one region, but the guy was a drunk & kept trying to get more money from me as I’m a disabled vet on a decent pension.
The playlist for Dr. Peterson's 2014 Personality lecture series goes from #6 to #9, and from #17 to #20-----does anyone know where to find #7-8 and #18-19, or are
