    OKAY, first of all, STOP playing around! Go ahead and put a FULL CUP of baking soda followed by a FULL CUP of vinegar. Allow it to sit for 3-4 minutes THEN pour in a half gallon of BOILING water! Then you will be done. No need to keep rationing out those ingredients bit by bit. "Ain't nobody got time fa dat!"

    If your doing this you can also clean your sink with a 50/50 vinegar and Neutrogena oil free acne wash mix and it is much cleaner and safe for the environment and makes your house feel good to be in.

    Good idea, bad execution. You diluted the effect of everything by pouring it into standing water. Wait until the water goes down, THEN pour in baking soda, then the vinegar. Both of those chemicals are water soluble and will simply mix with the standing water. That's why the commercial drain clog chemicals sell a gel - it's heavier than the water. Your mileage may vary.

      Plus, you have to give the baking soda and vinegar a chance to clean the pipe walls. Results are not instantaneous especially when your diluting the whole process. At least let it work for an hour..overnight is better!

    Baking soda and white vinegar is a routine maintenance measure, not a harsh chemical treatment, which should be reserved for the rare clog.

  • @deepshotone
    @deepshotone 5 лет назад +8

    Ok here's the deal. You might have to repeat the process a couple of times. I used baking soda and vinegar, hot water will loosen/soften the clog. Then I grabbed my plunger, gave it two quick plunges and "poof", problem solved. I repeated the process and used a pot of hot just to make sure. Issue resolved in less than 5 minutes.
    *****Side note***** If you're using a plunger to unclog a bathroom sink make sure and cover the overflow hole/drain with your free hand and plung the drain with your other hand....

    • @noelinesmith6846

      Unfortunately that did not work for me. I spent a couple of hours last night trying to loosen my blockage in my bathroom sink with no luck and now I have water coming back up the pipe and sitting in the sink. Very annoyed. I used the plunger for well over an hour and could not get the blockage moving. I also used boiling water bi carb of soda and vinegar. No luck

    Probably best as a preventative, rather than a curative measure and unlikely to be effective on standing water. Also, I've read/seen that you should leave it for up to half an hour and use much more soda/vinegar initially, followed by lots and lots of hot water!

  • @scyllabub
    @scyllabub 6 лет назад +10

    You did it wrong, Rick, from what I've seen so far in my desperate search ;) You should have put the bicarb in first and let it rest (10 minutes?), then add the vinegar. However, your sink is flooded so it's not going to work anyway, you'd need to plunge away the water first... plus you really do need something caustic to dissolve hair, which is probably the cause of your blockage. Bicarb+vinegar is more suited to grease blockages, IMHO.

  • @clairelambe6699

    Laughed like a drain at this.... Ya shoulda waited for the wife to come home to do it. To add to what others have written, after the dirty cold water has drained, pour a kettle of BOILING water down the sink; if that doesn't drain in a timely fashion, then let it drain and once gone, pour just a cup of boiling water down and let it drain. In either case, follow the boiling water with a cup of baking soda, then a cup of vinegar, then put your hands behind your head and step away from the sink. After at least 15 - 20 minutes, chase the concoction with a full kettle of boiling water - not too fast. Assuming there's "nothing special" down there, it should drain. Then pour hot water from the tap for about 5 mins to really flush it out. Do this once every month if you're going to be washing all your shavings down the sink. Maybe consider getting a metal mesh strainer for the drain to catch hair ...

  • @ritawalsh1976
    @ritawalsh1976 5 лет назад +10

    add baking soda 1st then vinegar. Vinegar is the limitng reagent in this reaction. Best way to do this would be to FIRST wait for the slow drain to empty the sink. Yeah, no fun, but it is more effective. So add baking soda in and around the dryish drain let it sit to bond with whatever it can the pour vinegar till it gets super foamy.

  • @j7ndominica051
    @j7ndominica051 4 года назад +3

    The reaction needs to happen with the clog, not between chemicals you pour in. The bubbles can only help lift already loosened deposits. A drain cleaner is less expensive than this. Consider that you pay for 95% of plain water with the vinegar. When you buy lye, you get 30-100% of the actual chemical.

    I unclog two drains by using baking soda and vinegar. This guy just doesn't know what he's doing. Poor the baking soda into the drain itself. Preferably not when the sink is filled of water. Then pour the vinegar into the sink. it's the vinegar and the baking soda reacting and bubbling up that causes the physical manipulation of the clog to move. But this is only a quick fix. looking for a method that will actually chemically dissolve the soap scum out. Any help 🤔🤔

    Seriously this worked....my double kitchen sink has been clogged for months .I have had to use shop vac everytime I did dishes ect. I have tried multiple drain openers ( drano , liquid plummer , plunger ) Today there was standing water still in sink didn't use shop vacuum yet been plunging water jet ect . So there was a quarter of water filled in sink I poured baking soda and vinegar in the standing water plunged several times and poof water finally started draining. So I put more bs and vinegar to make sure followed up with a pot of hot water then pulled drain plug on other side of sink full of water and it's finally draining as it should....but remember I tried many things over month's of time but it finally broke free😊

    If you clean your drains you can also take apart the drain pipe from the sink down and clean the P-trap the U-shaped pipe below the sink and then when clean take the p-trap and drain pipes and place them in the freezer in a plastic bag and let them sit in the freezer for about 30 minutes. The cold will help kill a residential curse that is why many houses feel haunted just from the dirty drain issues they invite bad spirits in to drain you of your energy. A professional drain cleaner or plumber can also do this for about $133 that should be the going rate.

    Okay here's the correct way that actually might work, but always use tools to remove as much hair as possible first... I use fence wire to get really deep. After doing this thoroughly, follow these steps.
    1. Let the sink drain all the way.
    2. Remove drain cover if you have one.
    3. Start boiling a pot of water.
    4. Carefully pour baking soda into drain, getting as much as possible into the drain, not around it.
    5. Pour vinegar then IMMEDIATELY follow next step.
    6. Quickly cover drain with plug, cover etc. creating a decent seal until you don't hear fizzing.
    7. After about 3 minutes pour boiling water down drain.

    Not sure why you would want to neutralize the acidic properties of the vinegar with sodium bicarbonate.

    This is useless. The first thing you should dis pull the cap on your trap and see if the drain is clogged at that point. If it's not and the clog is further down the pipe then you have a bigger problem and these home remedies will not work. You have to augur the drain all the way through and that usually requires a plumber.
