As I get asked about it very often. I show you this week how I shelf my records. And also, what my opinion is about IKEA Kallax.

Excellent video! I organize records by categories, then by alphabet by artist or group name. But I have been considering reorganizing them by year released. Sounds crazy, I know, and I've never tried it before. It just may be fun to pick a year and play records that came out in that year. If I decide to do this, I will let you know how it goes!

Hi Nadine! Great video! I’m very intrigued by those magazine inserts that can be turned over to self sort records. Thanks for the tip 😀. May even share it with the viewers on my channel at some point (if you don’t mind). Salut!

I use 3mm thick sheets of masonite (board material, smooth on one side, course on rear side) on the back of the 5 x 5 Kallax units. This ties the units together completely.

Kallax should be 'lied down' and stacked versus standing upright so the 'main board' is taking all the weight not the shorter dividers. I'm also affixing them to each other with metal plates as well as to the wall. Also 1/4" square doweling at the back

I use Lundia to store my records, cd's, books and so on. I have lots of it in storage also so I can easy expand if the records needs more room.👍😀

I use Kallax also. My only complaint is that they are too deep and I need to use a back spacer so the albums line up properly. IKEA should make a shelf JUST FOR VINYL with the proper dimensions, they would sell.

Nothing wrong with Kallax shelves, I have 4 of them & never had an issue, the only thing I did to them was to glue a 12” piece of wood to each cube section so the records don’t go too far back.

Same, have Expedits and Kallaxes (5x5) for decades, fully packed with records. No problems at all. Want to get my records more in front so want to do what you did too some day (Y) .

Once you put tge Kallax dividers( the white one) is it enough space for the vinyls to fit??? Or its tight space

Lagging the shelf to the wall cannot be stressed enough. Ikea furniture is designed to use the wall as a structural component, if you don't lag them to the wall then your taking away the component of the shelf designed to provide structural integrity. Expedit/Kallax often fail because of shear stress, and if you bolt the shelf to the wall then the wall takes a lot of that stress.
It's also not a great idea to use them in such a way that the long shelves are vertical (although using metal dowels that are glued in would help a lot with that). The long shelf should be horizontal with the small shelves proving load support to help hold the weight. If you run the long shelves vertical then the dowels are taking all the weight of whatever is on the shelf (your precious vinyl in this case).

  • @jocool7370

Those shelves crashed because they were poorly mounted.
The long boards must be mounted HORIZONTALLY. That way, there will be no sliding movement possible.
The Kallax doesn't even need to be bolted to the wall.

The black shelf shown in the video has been placed with teh shelves vertical and the dividers horisontal. This is clearly evident from the picture.
The shelves and top and bottom pieces are meant to create stable shelf, but if you do not mount it correctly but 90 degrees off then you're making a big expensive mistake.

IKEA? No way. I build my own room dividers from real wood. And that's the bottom line cause Stone Cold said so (from 976-CREOLEMAN)!
