Glad to see the channel picking up again!

Perfect timing. I'm about to buy one. I didn't know there was a wrong way up. haha Long boards horizontal. Got it. I would love to flip though your records. I can only imagine the crazy art you have in there. Thanks Tim. Charles
Thank you Gozer!! I purchased the metal dowels from Amazon using the information you provided. The only problem I had was with an 8 cube Kallax, you need 22 dowels. The order of one package from Amazon contains 15 metal dowels ☹️. So I ordered another package and my unfinished Kallax sits for a couple of days while I wait for the shipment. No problem though, I appreciate your video and the information you provided!!
I have a 10×10 Kallax, completely filled with records. I used the wood dowels with wood glue, without an issue for 5 years. But you absolutely have to secure it to your wall and make sure you're square. I simply used 2×4's cut to size for spacers. The records sit about 1/8 from the edge
So stoked to see uploads from you and I hope you’re doing well! Also super appreciate this as a collector with Kallax shelves. Never thought about the structural integrity but now my anxiety has me working towards making sure these little boxes are safely holding this heavy wax haha. Thank you!
This was so helpful to me. I don't have records, but I'm a crafter. I store tons of metal wafer dies and stamp sets in boxes, and needs these shelves. I also stores tons of cardstock, ink pads, ad a bunch of other supplies that will be stored on these shelves. So, while that might not seem like much, it adds up and is super heavy. Now I know NOT to lay them on their sides and to secure them to the wall. I also might add some hardboard to the backing for extra support. Thanks for a great video!
Great video! I custom built my shelves, but I definitely respect these ikea shelves (if properly installed of course). Looking forward to future videos! Your channel inspired me so much to try out new records years ago when I first started getting into vinyl.
Just had a conversation with a friend about custom shelves. I've been wanting to build some but I keep moving and I know when I build shelves, they will stay in the house. Maybe the NEXT move. Haha. Also, new video in the next 24 hours!
Okay, when (or if) I ever get Kallax shelves, I am definitely going to put a 1/4" plywood backing on them and/or brace them with 1x3's. Something to make sure they're solid and attached to the wall.
Thank you for this. I'm about to buy one for books. I wanted to lay it on the side, but don't know that I will now. Will definitely be getting some of those metal dowels. 'Glad I didn't go through with my banquette idea. 🤕
glad it helped! A decade into the metal dowel idea and they are still working (one 5x5 with wooden dowels got too flimsy and I no longer trust it after a big move. I am thinking about taking it apart and reassembling with the metal
I'm thinking of getting a 4x3 (4 up 3 across) kallax for a certain area to either display some small scale statues I've got into, or books, I like that you can put drawers or cupboard doors on them too, I neeeeeeed storage like that.
Interesting idea. I have my country and Jazz records in a side standing Kallax in my closet, and never considered they would fail. I've seen a couple of the images of shelves failing, but they have all been the 5 cube x 5 cube shelves that were incorrectly on their sides...but still a good safety precaution. I too worry about the weight on my records on floors. That may be something I address in the future just to be safe.
Dig. I made my own out of 7/8 inch oak plywood and three inch drywall screws. I do dig seeing someone who has crazy amounts of records like I do. I am north of 13k albums now.
I know this is over a year ago now, but I finally outgrew my current storage capacity and caved and got a Kallax 2x4 - mainly because I’m not quite at the stage where I need something as big as a 4x4 just yet - but I intend to put it horizontally (the way you’re not supposed to lay it apparently?). I’ve got the metal dowels to upgrade it a little bit as recommended here, but I guess I just need some reassurance that I shouldn’t just stand it up vertically.
This is an extremely helpful and thoughtful video. Glad I thought to check. Still concerned about weight distribution when stacking them on top of each other….
I bought the square unit’s cross insert, and use 1 insert in 1 kallax cube which act as a way to cut the kallax cube in half (so if records topple they don’t topple much) and I imagine adds support to the small shelves (I have a 2x4 kallax on the side)
Once again you are thinking outside the box Tim. Or outside the vinyl jacket. {smile} I am one of the old schoolers who bought the Expedit single column fives and stacked them next to each other. I really loved them. So sturdy. But I never filled them up all the way. I like the lighter look. Anyways. Thank you for the tip. Have a super weekend. Catch up soon~ Rob/Boston
You never see these doing a pancake collapse. It's always a horizontal failure. That is easily prevented by securing to the wall. The mounts don't support any load, they just stop and horizontal shifting.
Always use wood glue on/in all the joints. As being swede and have mounted numerous of IKEA products, they do need some glue. If you move, then they will keep the strength and form. If possible, tighten the screws after 2-3 months, if you can reach them. Don’t forget to fasten them to the wall and together. Vinyls and kids are the sugar on the cake.
Thanks for the video. I've had my Kallax horizontal for my decks and records for many years and the only issue I have had is some wobble (I have them on feet), but I've always been frustrated to see the longer pieces vertical rather than horizontal for the very reason they might collapse one day. So it's a wake-up call and I am going to dismantle it to strengthen. I don't see why I can't rotate the inner pieces so the long shelf is horizontal to the left and right of the central column, but can someone tell me if that's already been tried and if it's possible? Also, as I see from another comment, you need more than 15 metal dowels but I have just ordered a pack of 20 metal dowels, and I think two wooden ones strategically placed will be fine.
I've never worried about the whole thing toppling over... but I didn't think of it going through the floor. Yeah, that's quite a bit of weight on my 70-year-old wooden floor.
It’s not related to the subject of record shelves, but have you ever checked out Glassjaw’s Coloring Book EP? It consists of 3 interlocking rings (7”, 10”, and 12”). I thought you’d enjoy that release because it’s so unique
Why doesn’t kallax just made a horizontal version on the 4x2? Also would u recommend the metal dowels for a single 4x2 setup ? With a TT and receiver on top?
Won't the metal dowels gouge through the press-board shelves? When used for books, I've had to glue-screw two thicknesses of flat stir sticks (for paint) along gables for the shelves to sit on.
I'm getting ready to assemble 5 X 5 Kallax unit (bought mid-pandemic) and saw somewhere that wooden dowels are no longer a thing. If true does that make your stainless steel rod upgrade irrelevant? Or is there still a way to improve stability? And yes, these shelves will be filled to the max.
How is your 5x5 holding up as filled to capacity? I’m planning on a 5x5, but trying to decide if any additional strengthening is really necessary or just overkill (also my vinyl will only fill 10 of the cubbies… rest will be books etc). Heard so many stories of this unit holding up fine assembled as is.
I'm curious, now. People keep talking about the Kallax being "incorrectly" set up, but IKEA actually sells the shelves to be laid on their side, or else they wouldn't have included the metal base. Perhaps "incorrectly" only pertains to if used for heavy items, like vinyl records...? I s'pose most folk (or a lot of them, anyway) only put a few coffee-table style books in them with a flower pot or tschotske or something.
Wow, I never knew about the short shelves not supposed to bear much weight. Granted, I only have a 2x4 Kallax and only the top 4 cubes are filled... Hmm
Yes you are wrong. The structure of the shelves is important for were the weight goes. There is a long shelf that goes side to side, putting weight across and to the sides. But When turned that shelf is short, each now only held in by wood dowels. This well lead to structural failure. Look into it more as other videos explain it better.
You say the shelves aren't designed to go on their sides... yet this is the way the instructions tell you to mount them if you use the underframe with a 4x3, 4x2 or 4x1 unit
3.5 tons, is this 15,000 vinyls? If so, burn the shelves and get 150 wooden crates. The lovely ones hold about a 100 each. Spine facing shelves fail the form and function aesthetic test. I am fond of Ikea products, but not for vinyls. At least yours are Black!!
If I knew I was going to live in this house for an extended time, I would build shelves, but I'm not sure I will be here in a couple years, so at least another couple years of Ikea shelves. ha
@@ArtsyFartsyTimo For 15k records you could build them in a day, maybe day and a half, if you have average health - thick plywood, cutter, sander, measuring tape then paint them Black, or Gold for a Bling ambience. Then put some old wooden crates on them, the hipster shops want $30 for them these days but you can get them in Fleas still for 5$ or so. I use grey bricks between them to seperate layers.
