Best Coolers Showdown- Crowning A New Champion(s)

    We have now conducted over 50 cooler ice challenges and as a result matched up the BEST coolers we have tested to date with the addition of a few new coolers which our viewers regularly recommended. We listened, and aren't we glad we did! We have two new coolers we feel comfortable calling the best roto molded cooler.
    Most of the coolers tested were in the 45-50qt range. We did test a couple outside of this range, but the champion lies in that 45-50qt range.
    As with all of our ice challenges, we pre-chilled the coolers for 24 hours. All the ice was purchased at the same time, from the same marina. After 24 hours we drained the coolers and then topped them back up with ice and added two beverages. We always like to add a few beverages as it gives a better visual to those watching to see the progression of ice melt. We also open the coolers 3 times a day (morning, afternoon and evening). This simulates actual use and allows us to monitor the progress.
    Lid temperatures were recorded every day during the test. Every day (except one day when it was raining) the lids of these coolers reached 100°+ When comparing the lid of a white cooler to a dark cooler, the lid of the white cooler consistently read 2-3° hotter than a dark cooler. However, the darker coolers (when comparing identical size and manufacturer) lasted a half day less than a white cooler counterpart.

    I bought the Otterbox venture from Best Buy on a “deal of the day” for 50% off. Only reason I didn’t buy a Yeti. Now I have 2 Otterbox cooler and 6 tumblers. We take them camping and keep one in the side by side. These are by far the best coolers on the market for ice and durability. Most people I’ve met don’t know Otterbox even makes coolers.

    Can't quite put my finger on why I find these videos so entertaining. I have the Siberian Alpha and I really like it. In regular camping situations where the cooler is in the shade part of the time, sun part of the time, kids opening and closing it every ten minutes, falls from the tail gate when people forget to raise them before driving off, river rafting, etc. I've found that day 6 is usually about when it's time to drain it and toss new ice in. My old Coleman would last about half that and won't stand up to the punishment that these roto's can withstand.

      christian herlihy is your Siberian a 45qt or 65qt?

    • @weirdbeard1980
      @weirdbeard1980 5 лет назад +1

      @@MM_405 its the 45. The inside is a bit smaller than I would like but the trade off is that I can pick it up when it's completely loaded and move it over challenging terrain which is what I seem to be doing about half the time when I use it. The 65 is just to cumbersome and heavy unless you're always going to have a hand, be moving it across flat ground or you're the mountain himself.

Probly sitting at home with a cooler next to his chase lounge and says, "man I wish there was a way I could make money just dealing with how to keep beer near you while you chill in ALL aspects of chill life" So he literally puts together a channel about the best way for YOU to keep cold beverages next to you while you do chill things like boating and fishing and grilling. Thanks for the post. I think you did a pretty good job of creating a science experiment, but I ultimately think it's unfair to pick winners when you have apples to oranges comparisons. Size (amount of ice) and color (absorption of heat) of cooler make a tremendous difference. All coolers should have been same color and size. Doing effective experiments can be rather complicated, I do appreciate the effort. But even length of time of opening lids has to be the same and sun exposure. Again, not so easy to do. One experiment, I'd like to know is how long will the coolers last if you don't open the lids at all. We are going on a month long truck camper trip, don't have enough space to store everything in the camper freezer, so we wanted to buy an Orca 58 (other data seems to suggest they have the best ice retention) and leave the lid closed for 2 weeks until we can transfer that food to freezer. Have you done any long term lid closed tests?

  • @kurtwz
    @kurtwz 4 года назад +16

    Notice that the coolers that kept the ice the longest are the ones with higher capacity? That's because they started with more ice. Duh! This should be a test of thermal insulation efficiency. That's what people want to know... Which coolers WORK best. Not whether more ice will last longer. It usually will. Please consider repeating a test using the amount of ice that can fit in the smallest cooler in the comparison or by only testing coolers against identically sized coolers. That'll offer the best information.

    • @user-nh3gu1ge3d
      @user-nh3gu1ge3d 4 года назад +2

      Agreed for the most part, but you'll notice the venture was the winner and it is one of the smaller ones. Therefore, I would assume, based on this test, that it has the best thermal insulation. The custom coolers one would not be as good since it had such a large size advantage and performed the same.

    It's rare for me to go out of my way and post comments, but wanted to post this in case others have had an issue. So far I've had a very disappointing experience with Kong. I went with Kong over both Orca and Yeti because of this review. I get a substantial discount on Yeti as a military member, and I had a discount for Orca. But I really liked this review (which is great) and I really liked the accessories/function of the Kong. I got the 70 and it arrived with substantial warping in multiple areas of the cooler. Multiple. I'm talking very noticeable depressions. And the orifice used to fill the insulation was not flush with the shell, and with a couple years use would easily pop off. So I contacted them. (Jumping to weeks later after help from customer service and this site....)

I'm glad I was exposed to Kong because of your site and your readers. So if it all works out, I'll be very happy. Thanks again.

      I edited my initial post because I don't want anyone to shun Kong completely because of my anomaly. It took several emails and calls but they have now promptly corrected the issue. So if anyone is looking at coolers, I agree with this site that the modularity of Kong is a huge selling point. If it lives up to the ice duration then everyone should give it a look.

    Any word on reviewing the Hooked Coolers?? Keep seeing ads about them, seem affordable and well made but who knows without comparisons

    I’m interested in a comparison between the OtterBox Venture 45 and the Pelican 50QT elite.
    I watched video where Otterbox Venture 45 was tested on a recommendation and was a winner and is also leak proof. The Pelican was not part of that video.
    I also watched this video where the pelican did well, but that test did not include the Otterbox as part of that video test.
    Any thoughts suggestions between these two coolers.
    I’m also wondering if you have ever heard of or tested the Frigidaire Professional 45-Qt. Roto-Moulded Hard Cooler,

    Hi! looking for a cooler that can keep my dog's fancy raw dog food, for his sensitive tummy, good, for as long as possible. We would like to be able to go on a 5 day camping adventure. So the raw food needs to stay cold/frozen for at least 2-3 days in order to remain fresh for 5 days. Is there any way you guys could test some kind of raw meat that is frozen, like burger meat or hot dogs, something other people can utilize the information for camping/hiking.

    • @CoolersOnSale
      @CoolersOnSale  5 лет назад

      We've tested them many times in the past. Although they perform really well, they are not the best in terms of ice retention. The Techni Ice outlasted them on several occasions.

      Yes we have, many times. However, they do not last as long as many of these coolers. You can see that test here: www.coolersonsale.com/ultimate-ice-challenge-results/

      We've tested the Pelican 50 in the past, but the Orca, Techni Ice etc outperformed it in terms of ice retention. Having said that, they are built like tanks, very durable coolers.

    I don’t know about you guys but when I got a 30 rack in my cooler I’m in it 20 times in a day. Ice last about a day and a half in the Yeti. I now use my dads garage sale coolers, ice lasts just as long if you actually use your cooler. Best part is I can leave the cooler at the party because it only cost $3.00!

    I’ve watched every video by COS and now can’t choose my next purchase of a 45-65 qrt! I tried to get a Techni Ice, after seeing it beat the trusty Orca but they sold out and didn’t bother telling me for weeks after I had already paid so they are off my list. Can you give advice on one $350 or less? Top ones I’m considering are Kong 50, Engel 50, Yeti Tundra 45 or the Haul (on sale). If you can’t say due to worry about being accused of being affiliated with a brand, no worries. I just would love to get advice from The Expert! Thanks!

      It's really up to you. We really liked that Kong 50 and we have always liked our Engel 50. In fact the Engel 50 was what we took with us across the US because it fit the best under the tonneau cover in our truck. So it's not all about ice retention. Having said that... the Kong is pretty badass.

      Lol! I was ready to pull the trigger on the Engel until seeing your latest video with the Kong. Pretty much everything about that thing is impressive! I really appreciate your input and the videos! They definitely get me through my analytics projects at work.

    I actually love your videos BUT in all your tests you pre chill the coolers i really don’t think most people are doing that before we use them. I do feel a better test on ice retention would be right out of the box fill with ice and test from there. It would absolutely show a more real life ice challenge. I’m interested to hear your thoughts on that kind of test.
