      How come the commentators kept saying that they had run a 5km in the morning when they knew that they hadn't?!
      They didn't once mention (that I heard) that there had been an issue with measuring the distance and it was in fact short.
      Aren't they allowed to be honest in their commentary, inform the viewers what's going on. Sean seemed more open with what he could say years prior.

      @@hillerfitto be fair, they have to be repetitive to some extent. You can’t assume that people will actually watch the live stream from every day. They were obviously making efforts to speak to new folks who had no idea what was happening. Notice how many times they carefully explained the leader was in red and white, what the scores on top meant, etc. I would like to assume at least SOME of the repetitiveness was due to the intended new audiences.

We were already planning to go to Rogue Invitational in October to watch the Strongman competition but I think we will probably stick around now and watch the CrossFit portion as well. CrossFit owes both clarification and an apology to the entire sports world over that “5k”. To blatantly short the distance and then flaunt the times on social media is straight up pathetic and makes me question the integrity of the entire sport. Side note - if that’s true about Adler trying to trip Roman, that ain’t cool either. Runners don’t do that.

  • @redefinenj
    @redefinenj 11 месяцев назад +48

    Let’s be honest. The programming is dictated by the sponsors. Trek wants people to buy bikes so we have a bike race. Rogue wants boxes to buy pigs, alpacas, sandbags, bikes, and bobs. Concept 2 wants to ensure rowers, ergs, and bikes are bought so we gotta have events with them. Barbells were hardly featured. Why? You can get them anywhere. You don’t need the Rogue barbell to compete. But you do need a concept 2 rower for your cals to count, Xebex won’t work. You need an echo bike because assault isn’t it anymore and Schwinn won’t work.
    So in the end it feels like things are watered down and compromised not for the best tests, but how CrossFit, a company laying people off and making cuts, can ensure they have sponsors for their flagship event.

    • @hillerfit
      @hillerfit  11 месяцев назад +5

      I hear you on the bikes, and maybe concept two, but I do have a hard time thinking rogue pushed the sleds and such. You would be on to something if they had a paddle sponsor and then a requiste event.

    • @redefinenj
      @redefinenj 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@hillerfit btw I wasn’t directing that as a slight towards the vendors. I just imagine them in a meeting with HQ saying, “we would love to sponsor the event, but how does this help us sell more product.” I mean these companies are for profit and looking at their bottom lines.
      So I am not saying the companies pushed their stuff as much as HQ programmed to make the products a big part of the games. I mean even you had previously stated your dislike for all the machines in a past video compared to the good old days.
      You even in this video said any one can compete in their garage as long as they know the standards. However if the standards become centered around a product and a price point, that is no longer entirely true.
      So you have something like street parking giving flexibility within their programming and being brand and equipment agnostic so to speak and they are finding success.

    First off, great video and I largely agree!
    Three comments:
    1) We really don't know whether the 5k was accurate unless we went out and wheeled it ourselves. I think the athletes times are believable for sure. They are in line with the predicted times by JR and TS and seem to correspond to the athletes abilities. Emily Rolfe is a crazy good runner, as is Brent and Lazar. Are there times really off by that much?
    2) The camps. I think Mayhem had the best showing by far of the camps. They had the most athletes make the games and had athletes finish in a variety of places. The fact Luke Parker and Sam Cournoyer best Hopper shows the HWPO crew is not doing something right. Seems like Mayhem performed as usual and everyone else faltered.
    3) Push v pulling. Every year there is some movement that is under-programmed. Maybe we really should have seen more pushing, but unless it was specifically strict deficit hspu Laura would have still won. There are plenty of other pushing movements where she does fine. Sled pushes, shoulder presses etc. Also, if athletes are that affected by programming that means they have holes that need to be filled. If you want to win the Games, be good at all of the things.

    I thought the programming was better than last year and pretty good I think small adjustments need to be made like a handstand push-up and bar cycle would have been better on Sat. 6 sutures is not even in the same ballpark injury wise as a broken foot. Continuing on with that injury isn’t going to potentially take you out of your future as an athlete. A broken foot in no way takes away someone’s athletic ability, it takes away their ability to compete at the highest level. To say Roman is somehow less athletic/qualified because he got injured is ridiculous.

One night we didn't even get to see the winning time because it happened in an earlier heat! Though the ESPN coverage did give me one of my favorite moments of any CF games when Stacie Tovar called the Ski Bag Event the T-bag Event!!! ROFL. This was possibly one of the worst programmed years I have ever seen. As someone who does a lot of interval work I found it a joke to call the Intervals Event intervals. One rest period does not test your ability to recover adequately. Really bad programming. Wondering if this has anything to do with Dave getting involved in the games rather close to them and a conflict occurring between his vision and Boz's vision.

    • @albertfischer8804
      @albertfischer8804 11 месяцев назад

      @@hillerfit I think one of the reasons I prefer the team comp. is because I started watching the games at a point when R. Froning was at that point in his career(I don't do crossfit myself, I'm just a spectator.) I also like watching to see how well the various athletes on a team have come together and are basically synchronized or in many cases not. I think the second reason goes back to the first. The Mayhem teams that Froning was a part of were incredibly in synch the vast majority of the time. The "super" teams that competed against Froning usually weren't quite as in synch. I think the way to improve the team comp. would be if Froning took over the programing because I think the programing is still mostly at the level of "individual x4" and the qualifiers for team are just sad.(Thank you if you read the whole thing and keep making content people enjoy.)

      The new place was a true 400m and the old was 355m. I think maybe one “problem” is the setup at the box for many people who go to a WOD because of the community, the workout and fitness goals vs. trying to qualify for the games. For example, the old gym would say for the 400m, “Run to the flag pole and back” vs. the new place, “Run around the whole complex twice.” They try to make an easy landmark that people can recognize in order to hit that checkmark of run 400m.

    In my opinion, if CrossFit wants to grow and they currently have a limited budget for media (I.e. televising the Games), then next year they should do away with the teams competition (or at least not broadcast it), and instead put that money towards showcasing the age group and adaptive athletes. I feel like that would draw a lot more people to CrossFit and the sport by showcasing these types of athletes instead of just the young studs.

    About the cuts: I don’t buy Dave’s and other peoples argument about “there are cuts in all sports”. Because this is not like other sports. To determine the fittest on earth you need all the tests, and the total result over this broad spectrum of time and modal domains is the result. You don’t need all 100m dash athletes to run 12 races to determine the fastest, because they are doing the SAME THING before every cut! Just like all other sports that include cuts. The thing about the cuts in the CrossFit games is that they are happening in the middle of the race. It’s like if there would be cut lines at 50 and 75 meters in the 100m dash. “If you’re not the best at half the test, you won’t get to complete it”. Doesn’t make sense.
