  • In this video, I show how I replaced the upper and lower drive belts. It's more complicated than replacing the deck, but take your time and you'll get it. I hope this video helps you on your project.
Thanks for stopping by! Stay tuned.

Helpful tip: Push the clutch in and hold it with a small 2x4 the proper lenght from the pedal back to the front of the left fender. This relaxes the belts making them easier to remove the pulley and, of course, slip the belt back on afterwards. EDIT to add: I must say, your tip to utilize that hole to implement a prybar (in my case a long 1/2" socket extension for a more broad hit) to lower the front drive pulley after the bolt is out, worked perfectly! I would not have seen that hole to utilize it, and, at the angle you have to place your bar in there didn't think it could work very well - but everything's worth a try. After 4 or 5 hits and rotating the pulley she slid down nicely. Big thank you! Subscribed. Being a handyman is a perpetual learning experience.

Helpful tip 2) Because the new belts are often 5/8" instead of 1/2" the extra width causes them not to seat down inside the pullies at first. I had trouble putting on the smaller/upper belt (the one that goes with the larger pulley in back) Didn't even look possible. So I took some dishwashing liquid and soaked the belt briefly and when I pulled/pryed it seated in slightly better. His idea about putting 2x4 in there was good but I didn't even have clearance enough for that. So I put a crowbar down in there against the bolt head that is near the small pulley and performed the same task. No damage. I did use a 2x4 short piece to press allong the side of the large pulley to help align it while the crowbar did the "heavy" prying. Takes a few tries to get those little teeth to line up under the center of the large pulley. Don't forget; the smaller double-pulley in the back has one part of the lower pulley slide upwards to make it doable to get the longer/lower belt on. It provides a tad of clearance to push the belt in under and next to the guides. Soapy water would probably help wiht that too.

I ended up going to Tractor Supply to find my 1/2" belts. They have a huge variety of lengths and widths.

Would have been nice had you shown the actual process , but enough info to see how it's done, the Manual says to remove 3 springs one being that main clutch spring we all can see near the pullies.
The other two are at each side near the axle.
Why didn't you remove them ? maybe also be the reason you have gear engaged even in neutral maybe ?

How did you get the belt between the pulley and tabs that hold it on the pulley on the rear lower pulley?

I'll open the mower tomorrow and take a look. I'll do a short video to do a recap on that step.
I had trouble with the camera that and so some detail parts didn't make it.

Mr. Cliff, I have a 2004 Bolens 38" riding mower like yours. The transaxle went out in it and I replaced it with a used one I found. It fits just fine but there are 2 springs I can't remember where they go. So I was wondering If you could show me the routing of where the springs connect. I think the one is a large coil that I think connects to the top back but can't remember where the other end goes. The second is about 3 inches long and shaped kinda like a question mark not coiled and I can't remember where it goes. I think maybe they can be seen down under the battery tray. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

@davidnickels9301 keep an eye open for a rough cut video in about 20 minutes, on the drive system bay. Let me know if that gets you what you need.
