  • @ZesTofthelemon
    @ZesTofthelemon Год назад +69

    I legitimately love the contrast between this song and the licensed song
    Licensed song: Free Radicals - in the context of HFR, the lyrics are from the perspective of Rekka as she's talking down Chai - in her eyes, he thinks he's going to be a "radical" rockstar in the future and the protagonist of his own story, but in reality he's just some rash, geeky idiot that's fanatical to the point of thinking he can take her on after beating QA-1MIL, with nothing more than a defective power core and a robotic arm designed to pick up garbage. He wouldn't have gotten far at all without the support he has in the form of 808/Peppermint - she's the voice of reason that he sorely lacks.
    Streamer Mode song: Captive Normals - in as many ways as possible, it's the antithesis of the licensed song, even down to the title. It's from the perspective of Chai, lashing out at Rekka, at the entirety of Vandelay for thinking he's just a defect, an error, a blip in the system that's easily dealt with and labeling him as such - he's here to prove that he does, in fact, mean something, and that Rekka's in over her head. All the while, he's not showing weakness, as shown by the lyrics saying that he "can't snap, won't snap", solidifying he's in here for the long haul and making a name for himself, refusing to comply with Vandelay due to their treatment of him and showing that he's done being their captive. As another commenter said before me, her defeat signifies the rise of a new rockstar, and the beginning of the end for Vandelay - it's when Chai sets his path in stone as a significant person in this story, the figurehead of the resistance, even if he doesn't know it for sure yet.

      @@jacobkilby3533 the song’s name is also more fitting for Chai than Rekka (Chai is a normal socially inept music loving geek who is now being held captive at Vandalay because of an fuckup the corporation made, whereas Rekka is a radical boss who expects nothing but the best and strongest serving as his first roadblock to freedom).

    • @jacobkilby3533
      @jacobkilby3533 Год назад +9

      @@stevencampbell348 Honestly I would go one step further with a theory that the reason Chai dropped out of college, was that he was being kept in a psyche ward as a depressed mentally unstable individual, mentally unstable about his delusions of becoming a rockstar, and depressed knowing his arm has always held him back from that dream. But he heard about Project armstrong and broke out of the psyche ward to get a robot arm to make his dream come true.
      The way he's so brash and unapologetically apathetic towards others, and ices the bosses without hesitation with a smile on his face goes a long way to suggesting this, combining that with the delusions in his mind of being on a stage, and the lyrics to this song which I think is about Chai.

    • @tryingtoreachyouaboutyourc6161
      @tryingtoreachyouaboutyourc6161 Год назад

      @@jacobkilby3533 If Chai is a mentally unstable person with delusions of becoming a rockstar, who kills people with a smile, how bad is everyone else?
      There's Rekka, a texan wrestler who kills people labeled 'defects' if they simply sign an agreement.
      There's Zanzo (his insanity speaks for itself).
      There's Mimosa, an attention-craving diva who has no problem murdering someone in front of a crowd for her show.
      There's Roquefort, a finance-managing furry who will execute you to protect the company's profits and bottom line.
      There's Kale, a CEO who wants to (very directly) brainwash his customers to sell more products and removes anyone who gets in his way.
      And there's Peppermint, a trigger-happy rebel who has no problem pointing the barrel of a gun directly at someone's face.
      I would say Chai's brash attitude and delusions of rockstar grandeur aren't really as bad as any of this. Not to mention he's asked some of the bosses to hand over their spectra keys beforehand, meaning he likely doesn't want to kill some of them if he doesn't have to. In fact, most of the times his actions could count as self-defense, considering all of the bosses instigate the battles. I don't think his inner voice and his mind's stage count as too severe of a delusion either, and while he does make snarky comments sometimes, he is shown to care about the relationships he has with his friends, and attempts to support and relate to them when they appear to be depressed, (Spoilers? : Peppermint's family matters, and Macaron/Korsica's distaste towards the company) most notably during the mid/endgame cutscenes and dialogue interactions, meaning he's not completely and unapologetically apathetic towards everyone else.
      Therefore I rate Chai's overall insanity and mental instability a 2/10. Like around the same level as a teenager going through their delusional phase. I don't believe severe enough to be in a psyche ward.

    • @jacobkilby3533
      @jacobkilby3533 Год назад +15

      @@tryingtoreachyouaboutyourc6161 I see, thats a fair point, but I would argue that many of the times he asked for the spectra pass key was purely to avoid needing to fight them given that a lot of the times he is ready to fight them before they have even met, such as with mimosa. and yes the board members are fairly insane, with their degrees of emotional depravity hitting an all time high, Rekka being fanaticism, Mimosa being egotism, Kale being controlling etc. but I do think that caring about your friends and emotional growth is still something capable of people with mental instabilities like who I think Chai is, and that is what spells the difference between Chai and the board heads, he lets people into his life, the others don't.

      One could argue other way around too, that the scenes are specific made for the licensed Music, and the Streamer-Mode Tracks are a throw in. And tbh that's why how i feel about them, because the Streamer Mode Tracks don't have even closely the same impact for the scenes than the licensed ones. Free Radicals, Invaders must die and such gave me chills, and due they aren't like the rast of the tracks clearly a "Game-Soundtrack" but (licensed) real Music, they mad these Scenes / Bossfights special.

They then dissolved the studio, Tango Gameworks, damn near immediately after paying out the nose to acquire fellow masters in mediocre management, Activision Blizzard.
    I'm not going to act like Hi-Fi Rush is high art, there's enough waffling in video game discourse with syndicated journalists already. What I will say is that this studio, for making a fun game with a greay soundtrack, deserved far better than they got. I disagree. I do find them pretty decent, but i also find they kill a bit of the charme, epicness / speciality of these Scenes and Bossfight. It's a bit hard to explain but i find you clearly can tell, even if you don't know the "Songs" (like Free Radicals was a first timer to me, only Invaders Must Die i did know and well Wolfgant 5th but not that remix version) you clearly could differenate between them and the Game-Soundtrack Stuff, because well, the latter one really sounds like something made for a Game.
      The thing about it is, that you have to deal with that type music, because it's a rythm game with a high emphasis an music, for a huge portion of the playtime. Everytime however licences music went in, which felt quite a bit differently, it added impact and spice to these scenes / bosses, and give more flavor to them. There is a synergy between licensed and game-soundtrack, and going to streamer-mode feels like you miss that because it would sound like another "gamey" type of song (even if they tried to capture a bit of the spirit of said licensed music).
