All this reinforces chai as someone who is (at least typically, but we’ll get to that in a second) acrobatic in fighting and movement. However, once again returning to the scene at 8:40 shows us a chai who visually presents many of the signature attributes usually common to people who are tired/lazy/etc; in other words, people who are not acrobatic and lithe, or at least are not such at the moment. Chai is very visibly slightly hunched, which is an automatic shorthand for “tired” in our minds. Adding on to this, he utters no words excepting a small sigh (or maybe it’s just a breath? His hair, which is always pretty frazzled, is now used in this moment to further construct this exhausted appearance. Chais mouth is also slightly open and he is slightly breathing; while this does not outright convey tiredness, I find it important to note as it does show he is exerted, and in this scene that demonstration continues to set the stage that chai is in over his head with this fight (yknow, more than usual). As a final few details: chais scarf, which is mostly seen flying behind him in a “heroic” look (for example, it does this on his portrait and in some cutscenes), is simply laying behind him, dull and lifeless; chais eyebrows are scrunching up his face, making it seem weaker, though they are still angled, making him look determined; finally, his eyes themselves are closed more than usual (once again I am comparing this to chais usual character portrait, his eyes are more open then), conveying tiredness, pain, and that something is wrong/different about him to the player. The point that I making with this overanalyzing of literally one face is that the game uses many visual and auditory shorthands to convey that chai is not doing too well in this battle against Roquefort, and not only that this is apparent to us the player and to Roquefort, but also to chai himself.
