- How the Highstreet has changed in the 40 years up to 2022.
In 1982 I was very concerned about the number of old buildings disappearing in the town so I photographed Orpington high street to create a record
I have gone back at regular intervals ever since to photograph and then in 2022, the year of the platinum jubilee, video
So what has changed between 1982 and 2022?
I will be preparing a series of videos showing how the high street has changed over these 40 years. Although the pictures are from Orpington the changes were mirrored in many towns across the country
The pictures are used to highlight the many changes in the street scene over the last 40 years
This video shows the changes around the old Commodore Cinema, closed in 1982 and replaced by the building where McDonalds now is. It also shows the coming and going of the Video store with a business called Titles being taken over by Blockbuster and then Blockbuster leaving.
It also shows how buildings can be refurbished and expanded by adding an extra floor. this happened to the building Blockbuster was in.
On the other side of the road we see how the shops change with florists, fishmongers and stationers slowly disappearing and being replaced by other businesses
The impact on the street scene is also covered by seeing the difference the trees make

The commodore cinema certainly brings back many romantic memories. Great days gone by growing up and living in Orpington. Bring those days back please. Now living in West Sussex

I remember Titles, the video shop that later changed to Blockbusters ! I was just randomly thinking about it !!
My childhood right there. I went to see Star Wars at that cinema. And where Robinson & Jackson is now, used to be, “The Children’s Shop” a toy shop owned by my dad. Ironic given that I’m now an estate agent! Great video. Thanks for the history.
My dad swore by Last Stop cafe. That was where my family used to eat out.
Also crazy that Wetherspoons has gone in recent months! That was an Orpington stalwart for years.
Think it first open ended in about 1994, so almost 30 years

Besides the Commodore cinema, my most prominent memory growing up here was the corner unit at Knoll Rise (Robinson in the video) which was The Children's Shop in the 60's. Many a birthday present came from there.
Yes, I have a vague memory of the toy shop, unfortunately I don't have any photographs from that time.
I remember the toy shop on the corner of The High Street and Knoll Rise. It was still there in the late 70s but I left orpington in 1979 so I don't know if it survived into the 80s.
I was hoping to see S M electronics in that parade of shops but you missed it out
ANd Robinson & Jackson used to be another toyshop from the mid 80s - 90s. It might have also been a Baker's at one time?
Down the other end of the town at Carton parade there used to be the burnt out shell of the other cinema that stood there for years known as the "Bug hut" the biggest change is the industry along Cray avenue down to St Mary's Cray it seems only Tip Top bakeries has stayed the same even though it no longer makes bread anymore.
TipTop is now an Amazon warehouse. The décor has been totally updated (destroyed).
I think my mum used to call that one the flea pit!

Was there a Golden Egg restaurant/cafe on that corner unit in the 70s/80s?... I seem to recall it being mentioned in those cinema pre-main feature adverts mentioning local businesses...

Does anyone’s remember a shop called Past Times in Orpington?
The wimpy used to be to the left of the cinema in the 70s
I remember it well. Used to take my dates there when I was a teenager. Very sophisticated.
