Moved, Rebuilt twice - Temple Bar, old gateway to London - as seen inside & out
Temple Bar, Paternoster Square London
Temple Bar is a Sir Christopher Wren building and is next to two other of his buildings, St Paul's Cathedral and the Chapter House.
It was created between 1669 and 1672 to the designs of Sir Christopher Wren as a gatehouse to the City of London and located at the junction of The Strand and Fleet Street. See 1520 map.
There is a monument showing where it once stood next to what is now the Royal Courts of Justice.
The gatehouse replaced a wooden one that, although not damaged in the Great Fire of London of 1666 was in a very poor state by that time
Interestingly when it was in its first location it was used as a store for Child’s Bank, now part of NatWest.

I was born and raised in Leicester. It was vibrant and had character with an industrial mix. Now, it has been completely ruined by destroying old buildings, replacing them with inappropriate modern monstrosities, and a once proud city turned into a soulless shit hole.

Thanks for this. I moved to Leicester in 1987 for a Physics degree at the University. I still live here and it's nice to be reminded of how it used to be. Overall it is an odd city. Pleasant enough but pretty nondescript. The Richard III discovery has helped pep things up. The local accent is bloody awful.

I thought London was proud of not being riddled with high buildings. I've only taken notice of the changes from a distance. But even if we concede that some of those structures carry a bit of architectoral finesse, it looks awful, crammed, overloaded.

I can’t decide whether selling this off to de Montfort uni was a good move or not. DMU seems to do what it wants in the city (or gets its way with the planners) and they simply forced the museum out, closed the building and put a gate on it to stop any access. While it’s an interesting building (from the historical point of view) it was really worth a visit when it was the regimental museum. Descending the spiral staircase is not for the faint hearted!

The boot and shoe factory, I think, belonged to the co-op. The Cattle Market was a terrible loss. On market days farmers from all over the County would drive their lorries and leave them all along Welford Road over the railway bridge. The market itself had its own railway sidings which became redundant after the Beeching cuts. Next to the market were two abattoirs and local butchers could buy an animal and pick up the carcass a day or two later. And of course the sheep production led to wool which led to knitting and dyeing. The leather wholesaler was where it was because nearby was the wholesale fruit and veg market and a tannery. The tannery got its hides from the abattoirs next to the cattle market. Everything worked more or less harmoniously. The demand for leather in Leicester was very high because of shoe making. At one time Leicester was the shoe capital of the world with the British Shoe Corporation producing millions and others like Brevit Shoes exporting most of its production. Sadly, it's mostly gone along with socks and stockings, knitwear, and machinery companies like British Shoe, Mellor Bromley, Stibbe etc. The old warehouses shown ( converted to housing) are a tiny fraction of what was once there. Even the LMS station shown is a shadow of what it was. There used to be 4 lines running through it and a large marshalling yard behind with BRS lorries loading and unloading freight. Leicester also had another two railway stations doing similar things. Leicester was once one of the richest towns in England. Even at the time of the Civil War when Prince Rupert demanded £5000 from the burghers of Leicester it was very rich. Now it's finished..epitomised by the street beggars in the 'pedestrianised' city centre.

@@HighWealder the East Mids is quite well off compared to many places in the UK and not all of us are constantly disease stricken. That said I’d tell everyone to go to York, Coventry, Lincoln, Canterbury, Chester, or pretty much any other Romano Medieval city before coming to Leicester. The history is incredibly rich and it’s the history of our ancestors so fascinating to us but it’s all buried far underground and only visible in churches and in the outlines of the streets. You need to read a huge amount before coming and look at a heck of a lot of medieval maps if it’s to make any sense to you as an historic site. A great research project for native citizens and a huge headache of disappointment for visitors who want to see nice ancient architecture. Only four buildings are worth seeing - the Guildhall, St Nicholas, St Mary de Castro, and St Margaret’s. They are lovely but only St Nicks and St Mary de Castro are uniquely exceptional. For gatehouses associated with monastic hospital compounds go to London and look at the gate in Temple Inn or to Austin Friars in Newcastle. The Leicester Magazine isn’t as worth while
