  • How the Highstreet has changed in the 40 years up to 2022.
In 1982 I was very concerned about the number of old buildings disappearing in the town so I photographed Orpington high street to create a record
I have gone back at regular intervals ever since to photograph and in 2022 video
So what has changed between 1982 and 2022? How many of these old shops do you remember?
In this video we look at the area from the Priory Gardens entrance on the one way system to Carlton Parade. Do you remember these old cottages or the bike shop ? What about the old timber yard and when the Garage was a Chevron? Make sure you Stay to the end to see everything that has changed, and also what has not. This part of the highstreet has seen the most new buildings during the survey.

Lived in Orpington 21 years, you just don't realise how much it has changed over this time. Thank you for reminding us 👍🏻

Thank-you for sharing your photos - what a rich archive. I lived in Orpington until 1979, by which time I was 10, so there are a lot of childhood memories here. Carlton Parade and Priory Gardens were just round the corner from where I lived. I remember Printwise the stationers, and there was also a car spares place called Pit Stop on Carlton Parade, although I can't see it in the 1982 pics, so it must have gone by then.

At 5:00, looking up the road, on the corner of the road that went toward Chislehurst there was a wonderful little very old building that looked as if it may have been a house at one time painted white if I recall correctly, sadly now gone, On the same side as Jones jewellers and clock repairs, there was a music shop that sold guitars.
    Fascinating video's, very well done.

This is my favourite so far. I too bought a couple of bikes from J Palmer, the last one in 1980. I also went to Darrick Wood from 1975.

Happy new year to you as well. Glad you enjoyed the video! I have just checked and I am afraid I don't think I have any pictures of your Dad's car workshop. I have a couple of pictures of an old brick workshop on the one way system that is now a house, but unfortunately nothing else. Thank you again for watching

'Roots', the hairdressers, was the last one on Carlton Parade for many years.
RIP, Pauline Dyke, who snipped and puffed away on cigarettes in there for years.
Later on, masseurs 'worked' in the replacement 'business'.
    (No, I didn't).
I think it closed in '94, when Pauline opened her own, eponymously-named business in Aynscombe Angle, in the former antiquarian, bric-a-brac and curio place. After quite a few years, that closed, when she began to work from home, (still smoking); it's now a house, with the same, interesting, arched window.
Dennis Lynch, the tailors, worked in one of those small shops to the left of the park's entrance.
